We use density functional theory (DFT) to explore the physical properties of an $Er_{ W}$ point defect in monolayer $WS_{ 2}$. Our calculations indicate that electrons localize at the dangling bonds associated with a tungsten vacancy ($V_{W}$) and at the $Er^{ 3+}$ ion site, even in the presence of a net negative charge in the supercell. The system features a set of intra-gap defect states, some of which are reminiscent of those present in isolated $Er^{ 3+}$ ions. In both instances, the level of hybridization is low, i.e., orbitals show either strong Er or W character. Through the calculation of the absorption spectrum as a function of wavelength, we identify a broad set of transitions, including one possibly consistent with the $Er^{ 3+}$ $4I_{ 15/2} \rightarrow 4I_{ 13/2}$ observed in other hosts. Combined with the low native concentration of spin-active nuclei as well as the two-dimensional nature of the host, these properties reveal $Er:WS_{ 2}$ as a potential platform for realizing spin qubits that can be subsequently integrated with other nanoscale optoelectronic devices.
A simple band model using higher order non-parabolic effect was adopted for single layer molybdenum tungsten alloy disulfide (i.e., $\mathrm{Mo}_{1-x}\mathrm{W}_x\mathrm{S}_2$). The first-principles method considering $2\times2$ supercell was used to study band structure of single layer alloy $\mathrm{Mo}_{1-x}\mathrm{W}_x\mathrm{S}_2$ and a simple band (i.e., effective mass approximation model, EMA) model with higher order non-parabolic effect was used to fit the first-principle band structures in order to calculate corresponding the hole mobility. In addition, we investigate the alloy scatte…
A method is presented for optically preparing WS2 monolayers to luminesce from only the charged exciton (trion) state--completely suppressing the neutral exciton. When isolating the trion state, we observed changes in the Raman A1g intensity and an enhanced feature on the low energy side of the E12g peak. Photoluminescence and optical reflectivity measurements confirm the existence of the prepared trion state. This technique also prepares intermediate regimes with controlled luminescence amplitudes of the neutral and charged exciton. This effect is reversible by exposing the sample to air, ind…
Interactions of quantum materials with strong-laser fields can induce exotic nonequilibrium electronic states. Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides, a new class of direct-gap semiconductors with prominent quantum confinement, offer exceptional opportunities toward Floquet engineering of quasiparticle electron-hole states, or excitons. Strong-field driving has a potential to achieve enhanced control of electronic band structure, thus a possibility to open a new realm of exciton light-matter interactions. However, experimental implementation of strongly-driven excitons has so far remained …
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been established as a versatile route for the large-scale synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides, such as tungsten disulfide (WS2). Yet, the role of the precursor composition on the efficiency of the CVD process remains largely unknown and yet to be explored. Here, we employ Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) in a two-stage process to tune the oxygen content in tungsten oxide (WO3-x) precursors and demonstrate that the presence of oxygen vacancies in the precursor films leads to a more facile conversion from WO3-x to WS2. Using a joint study based on ab in…
Semiconducting two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenide crystals have been regarded as the promising candidate for the future generation of transistor in modern electronics. However, how to fabricate those crystals into practical devices with acceptable performance still remains as a challenge. Employing tungsten disulfide multilayer thin crystals, we demonstrate that using gold as the only contact metal and choosing appropriate thickness of the crystal, high performance transistor with on/off ratio of $10^{8}$ and mobility up to $234\:cm^{2}V^{-1}s^{-1}$ at room temperature can be realiz…
Dilute magnetic semiconductors, achieved through substitutional doping of spin-polarized transition metals into semiconducting systems, enable experimental modulation of spin dynamics in ways that hold great promise for novel magneto-electric or magneto-optical devices, especially for two-dimensional systems such as transition metal dichalcogenides that accentuate interactions and activate valley degrees of freedom. Practical applications of 2D magnetism will likely require room-temperature operation, air stability, and (for magnetic semiconductors) the ability to achieve optimal doping levels…
We present a complete characterisation at the nanoscale of the growth and structure of single-layer tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) epitaxially grown on Au(111). Following the growth process in real time with fast x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we obtain a singly-oriented layer by choosing the proper W evaporation rate and substrate temperature during the growth. Information about the morphology, size and layer stacking of the WS$_2$ layer were achieved by employing x-ray photoelectron diffraction and low-energy electron microscopy. The strong spin splitting in the valence band of WS$_2$ couple…
Designing directional optical antennas without compromising the field enhancement requires specially designed optical cavities. Herein, we report on the experimental observations of directional photoluminescence emission from a monolayer Tungsten Disulfide using a bent-plasmonic nanowire on a mirror cavity. The geometry provides field enhancement and directivity to photoluminescence by sandwiching the monolayer between an extended cavity formed by dropcasting bent silver nanowire and a gold mirror. We image the photoluminescence emission wavevectors by using the Fourier plane imaging technique…
The rational design of transition metal dichalcogenide electrocatalysts for efficiently catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is believed to lead to the generation of a renewable energy carrier. To this end our work has made three main contributions. At first, we have demonstrated that exfoliation via ionic liquid assisted grinding combined with gradient centrifugation is an efficient method to exfoliate bulk WS2 to nanosheets with a thickness of a few atomic layers and lateral size dimensions in the range of 100 nm to 2 nm. These WS2 nanosheets decorated with scattered nanodots exhibit…
Density-functional theory forces, stresses and energies comprise a database from which the optimal parameters of a spline-based empirical potential combining Stillinger-Weber and modified embedded-atom forms are determined. Accuracy of the potential is demonstrated by predictions of ideal shear, stacking fault, vacancy migration, elastic constants and phonons all between 0 and 100 GPa. Consistency with existing models and experiments is demonstrated by application to screw dislocation core structure and deformation twinning in a tungsten nanorod. Lastly, the potential is used to study the high…
The interaction between carbon and screw dislocations in tungsten is investigated using ab initio calculations. The presence of carbon atoms in the vicinity of the dislocation induces a reconstruction, with the dislocation relaxing to a configuration, the hard core structure, which is unstable in pure tungsten. The reconstruction corresponds to a strong binding of carbon in the prismatic sites created by the dislocation which is perfect for high concentrations of carbon segregated on the dislocation line. However, the reconstruction is only partial for lower atomic fractions, with the dislocat…
Based on ab initio calculations, a Finnis-Sinclair-type interatomic potential for W-W interactions has been developed. The modified potential is able to reproduce the correct formation energies of self-interstitial atom defects in tungsten, offering a significant improvement over the Ackland-Thetford tungsten potential. Using the modified potential, the thermal expansion is calculated in a temperature range from 0 K to 3500 K, and the results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data, thus overcoming the shortcoming of the negative thermal expansion using the Derlet-Nguyen-Manh-Du…
The interplay of screw dislocations with carbon atoms is investigated in tungsten at high temperature using in situ straining experiments in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and through ab initio calculations. When the temperature is high enough to activate carbon diffusion, above 1373 K, carbon segregates in the core of screw dislocations and modifies their mobility, even for a carbon concentration as low as 1 appm. TEM observations reveal the reappearance of a Peierls mechanism at these high temperatures, with screw dislocations gliding viscously through nucleation and propagation of…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayer has recently emerged as an important two-dimensional semiconductor with promising potentials for electronic and optoelectronic devices. Unlike semi-metallic graphene, layered TMDC has a sizable band gap. More interestingly, when thinned down to a monolayer, TMDC transforms from an indirect bandgap to a direct bandgap semiconductor, exhibiting a number of intriguing optical phenomena such as valley selective circular dichroism, doping dependent charged excitons, and strong photocurrent responses. However, the fundamental mechanism underlying such…
Two-dimensional (2D) tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$), tungsten diselenide (WSe$_2$), and tungsten ditelluride (WTe$_2$) draw increasing attention due to their attractive properties deriving from the heavy tungsten and chalcogenide atoms, but their mechanical properties are still mostly unknown. Here, we determine the intrinsic and air-aged mechanical properties of mono-, bi-, and trilayer (1-3L) WS$_2$, WSe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ using a complementary suite of experiments and theoretical calculations. High-quality 1L WS$_2$ has the highest Young's modulus (302.4+-24.1 GPa) and strength (47.0+-8.6 GPa) of…
An atomistic study of the thermal properties of lithiated molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is presented and an explanation for the experimentally determined anisotropic behavior of the in- and through-plane thermal conductivity is proposed. Configurations with different levels of lithium concentration are simulated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and their structural, electronic, and thermal transport properties are evaluated as a function of the degree of lithiation. Comparisons between regular and disordered lithium distributions as well as to the experimental data reveal that the measured …
We show here how density functional theory calculations can be used to predict the temperatureand orientation-dependence of the yield stress of body-centered cubic (BCC) metals in the thermallyactivated regime where plasticity is governed by the glide of screw dislocations with a 1/2 <111> Burgers vector. Our numerical model incorporates non-Schmid effects, both the twinning/antitwinning asymmetry and non-glide effects, characterized through ab initio calculations on straight dislocations. The model uses the stress-dependence of the kink-pair nucleation enthalpy predicted by a line tension mod…
A key challenge in manipulating the magnetization in heavy-metal/ferromagnetic bilayers via the spin-orbit torque is to identify materials that exhibit an efficient charge-to-spin current conversion. Ab initio electronic structure calculations reveal that the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity (SHC) for pristine $β$-W is about sixty percent larger than that of $α$-W. More importantly, we demonstrate that the SHC of $β$-W can be enhanced via Ta alloying. This is corroborated by spin Berry curvature calculations of W$_{1-x}$Ta$_x$ ($x$ $\sim$ 12.5%) alloys which show a giant enhancement of spin Ha…
Density Functional Theory (DFT) has become the quasi-standard for ab-initio simulations for a wide range of applications. While the intrinsic cubic scaling of DFT was for a long time limiting the accessible system size to some hundred atoms, the recent progress with respect to linear scaling DFT methods has allowed to tackle problems that are larger by many orders of magnitudes. However, as these linear scaling methods were developed for insulators, they cannot, in general, be straightforwardly applied to metals, as a finite temperature is needed to ensure locality of the density matrix. In th…
The presence of electron energy loss (EELS) peak is proposed theoretically in molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets. Using density functional theory simulations and calculations, one EELS peak is identified in the visible energy range, for MoS2 nanosheets with molybdenum vacancy. Experimentally, four different laser sources are used for the Raman scattering study of MoS2 nanosheets, which show two distinct Raman peaks, one at 385 cm-1 (E12g) and the other at 408 cm-1 (A1g). In the cases of three laser sources with wavelengths 405 nm (3.06 eV), 632 nm (1.96 eV) and 785 nm (1.58 eV), respective…
We investigate, using a first-principles density-functional methodology, the nature of magnetism in monolayer $1T$-phase of tantalum disulfide ($1T$-TaS$_2$ ). Magnetism in the insulating phase of TaS$_2$ is a longstanding puzzle and has led to a variety of theoretical proposals including notably the realization of a two-dimensional quantum-spin-liquid phase. By means of non-collinear spin calculations, we derive $\textit{ab initio}$ spin Hamiltonians including two-spin bilinear Heisenberg exchange, as well as biquadratic and four-spin ring-exchange couplings. We find that both quadratic and q…
Quantum localization via atomic point defects in semiconductors is of significant fundamental and technological importance. Quantum defects in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors have been proposed as stable and scalable optically-addressable spin qubits. Yet, the impact of strong spin-orbit coupling on their dynamical response, for example under optical excitation, has remained elusive. In this context, we study the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the electron-phonon interaction in a single chalcogen vacancy defect in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, molybdenu…
Ab initio calculations have been performed to clarify the primary behaviors of He atoms in vanadium and to generate the database for the development of the interatomic potential for V-He system within the framework of the"s-band"model.The calculated formation energies of the tetrahedral, octahedral and substitutional He defects,as well as those for He2,He3 and He2V clusters are reasonable when compared with relevant experimental results and ab initio calculations under the same conditions. The applicability of the present V-He potential for atomistic simulations to investigate the moving, cluster…
Using density functional theory calculations, many researchers have predicted that various tungsten-nitride compounds WN$_x$ ($x$ > 1) will be "ultra-compressible" or "superhard", $i.e.$ as hard as or harder than diamond. These compounds are predicted to have large bulk and shear moduli (> 200 GPa) and to be elastically and vibrationally stable. Compounds with such desirable properties must be energetically stable against decomposition into other compounds. This stability can only be found after the determination of the convex hull for W$_x$N$_1$$_-$$_x$ lines which connect the lowest enthalpy…
We present a novel approach to determine the onset of contact between a tip and a surface. The real contact area depending on the distance is calculated using Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules. The jump to contact, which is often observed in atomic force microscopy experiments, is used as an indicator for the initial point of contact, which in turn is defined by atomic relaxations and thus without the need of external parameters. Within our approach the contact area is estimated by evaluating the zero flux surfaces between the touching Bader-atoms, where the necessary electronic den…
