The electric double layer (EDL) that forms at the interface between a polyelectrolyte gel and a salt bath is studied using asymptotic and numerical methods. Specifically, matched asymptotic expansions, based on the smallness of the Debye length relative to the typical gel dimensions, are used to construct solutions of the governing equations and derive electroneutral models with consistent jump conditions across the gel-bath interface. A general approach for solving the equations of incompressible nonlinear elasticity in a curved boundary layer is developed and used to resolve the gel mechanics in the EDL. A critical feature of the model is that it accounts for phase separation within the gel, which gives rise to diffuse interfaces with a characteristic thickness described by the Kuhn length. We show that the solutions of the electroneutral model can only be asymptotically matched to the solutions in the EDL, in general, when the Kuhn length greatly exceeds the Debye length. Conversely, if the Debye length is similar to or larger than the Kuhn length, then the entire gel can self-organise into periodic, electrically charged domains via phase separation. The breakdown of electroneutrality demonstrates that the commonly invoked electroneutral assumption must be used with caution, as it generally only applies when the Debye length is much smaller than the Kuhn length.
We study the salt-dependent conformations of dilute flexible polyelectrolytes in solution via computer simulations. Low concentrations of multivalent salt induce the known conformational collapse of individual polyelectrolyte chains, but as the salt concentration is increased further this is followed by a reexpansion. We explicitly demonstrate that multivalent counterions can overcompensate the bare charge of the chain in the reexpansion regime. Both the degree of reexpansion and the occurrence of overcharging sensitively depend on ion size. Our findings are relevant for a wide range of salt-i…
We provide numerical evidence that hydrodynamic interactions are screened for charged polymers in salt solution on time scales below the Zimm time. At very short times, a crossover to hydrodynamic behavior is observed. Our conclusions are drawn from extensive coarse-grained computer simulations of polyelectrolytes in explicit solvent and explicit salt, and discussed in terms of analytical arguments based on the Debye-Hueckel approximation.
Aggregation of stiff polyelectrolytes in solution and angle- and distance-dependent potential of mean force between two like-charged rods are studied in the presence of 3-valent salt using molecular dynamics simulations. In the bulk solution, formation of long-lived metastable structures with similarities to the raft-like structures of actin filaments is observed within a range of salt concentration. The system finally goes to a state with lower free energy in which finite-sized bundles of parallel polyelectrolytes form. Preferred angle and interaction type between two like-charged rods at dif…
Although the volume transition of the polyelectrolyte gel has been studied for decades, little research on the effects of size of the mobile ions has been conducted. In the present paper, Tanaka classical theory of polyelectrolyte gel is extended to the cases of mobile ions of finite volume. In the salt free limit, the theoretical results show that the discontinuous volume transition of the polyelectrolyte gel will become a continuous one with an increase of the counter-ionic size. An increase in salt concentration can also make the polyelectrolyte gel in poor solvent collapse. Poorer solvent …
We study the electrokinetics of a single polyelectrolyte chain in salt solution using hydrodynamic simulations. The salt-dependent chain mobility compares well with experimental DNA data. The mobility of condensed counterions exhibits a salt-dependent change of sign, an anomaly that is also reflected in the counterion excess conductivity. Using Green's function techniques this anomaly is explained by electrostatic screening of the hydrodynamic interactions between chain and counterions.
We present results of molecular dynamics simulations of strong, flexible polyelectrolyte chains in solution with added salt. The effect of added salt on the polyelectrolyte chain structure is fully treated for the first time as a function of polymer density. Systems above and below the Manning condensation limit are studied. The chain contraction due to added salt is weaker than expected from simple screening arguments. The chain structure is intimately tied to the ion density near the chain even for chains in the counterion condensation regime. In contradiction to Manning counterion condensat…
Complexation between anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes results in solid-like precipitates or liquid-like coacervate depending on the added salt in the aqueous medium. However, the boundary between these polymer-rich phases is quite broad and the associated changes in the polymer relaxation in the complexes across the transition regime are poorly understood. In this work, the relaxation dynamics of complexes across this transition is probed over a wide timescale by measuring viscoelastic spectra and zero-shear viscosities at varying temperatures and salt concentrations for two different sal…
We present a model for describing flexible polyelectrolytes in a good solvent a nd in the presence of monovalent salt . The molecule composed by $N$ monomers is characterized by the end to end distanc e $R_e=b (Z-1)^γ$ and the number of associated counterions $n$. At high tem peratures the polyelectrolyte behaves as a neutral polymer ($γ=0.588$). Dec reasing the temperature, the macromolecule changes from this extended configurat ion($γ=0.588$) to a stretched form ($γ\approx 1$). At even lower temp eratures, above the Manning condensation threshold, the polyelectrolyte collapse s ($γ\approx 0.…
We study salt-induced charge overcompensation and charge inversion of flexible polyelectrolytes via computer simulations and demonstrate the importance of ion excluded volume. Reentrant condensation takes place when the ion size is comparable to monomer size, and happens in a middle region of salt concentration. In a high-salt region, ions can overcharge a chain near its surface and charge distribution around a chain displays an oscillatory behavior. Unambiguous evidence obtained by electrophoresis shows that charge inversion does not necessarily appear with overcharging and occurs when the io…
The complexation of a polyelectrolyte with an oppositely charged spherical macroion is studied for both salt free and salty solutions. When a polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion, its turns repel each other and form an almost equidistant coil. It is shown that this repulsive correlations of turns lead to the charge inversion: more polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion than it is necessary to neutralize it. The charge inversion becomes stronger with increasing concentration of salt and can exceed 100%. This paper confirms that correlations are the universal mechanism of charge inversio…
Properties of polyelectrolytes in tetravalent salt solutions are intensively investigated by a coarse-grained model. The concentration of salt and the size of tetravalent counterions are found playing a decisive role on chain properties. If the size of tetravalent counterions is compatible with the one of monomers, the chains show extended structures at low and at high salt concentrations, whereas at intermediate salt concentrations, they acquire compact and prolate structures. The swelling exponent of a chain against salt concentration behaves in an analogous way as the morphological quantiti…
We present a soft-potential-enhanced Poisson-Boltzmann (SPB) theory to efficiently capture ion distributions and electrostatic potential around rodlike charged macromolecules. The SPB model is calibrated with a coarse-grained particle-based model for polyelectrolytes (PEs) in monovalent salt solutions as well as compared to a full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations with explicit solvent. We demonstrate that our modification enables the SPB theory to accurately predict monovalent ion distributions around a rodlike PE in a wide range of ion and charge distribution conditions in the weak-co…
Counterion distribution around an isolated flexible polyelectrolyte in the presence of a divalent salt is evaluated using the adsorption model [M. Muthukumar, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 120}, 9343 (2004)] that considers Bjerrum length, salt concentration, and local dielectric heterogeneity as physical variables in the system. Self consistent calculations of effective charge and size of polymer show that divalent counterions replace condensed monovalent counterions in competitive adsorption. The theory further predicts that at modest physical conditions, polymer charge is compensated and reversed with…
In this study we use non-equilibrium thermodynamics to systematically derive a phase-field model of a polyelectrolyte gel coupled to a hydrodynamic model for a salt solution surrounding the gel. The governing equations for the gel account for the free energy of the internal interfaces which form upon phase separation, the nonlinear elasticity of the polyelectrolyte network, and multi-component diffusive transport following a Stefan--Maxwell approach. The time-dependent model describes the evolution of the gel across multiple time and spatial scales and so is able to capture the large-scale sol…
By molecular dynamics simulation, we study the charge inversion phenomenon of a rod macroion in the presence of polyelectrolyte counterions. We simulate electrophoresis of the macroion under an applied electric field. When both counterions and coions are polyelectrolytes, charge inversion occurs if the line charge density of the counterions is larger than that of the coions. For the macroion of surface charge density equal to that of the DNA, the reversed mobility is realized either with adsorption of the multivalent counterion polyelectrolyte or the combination of electrostatics and other mec…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, the kinetics of bundle formation for stiff polyelectrolytes such as actin is studied in the solution of multivalent salt. The dominant kinetic mode of aggregation is found to be the case of one end of one rod meeting others at right angle due to electrostatic interactions. The kinetic pathway to bundle formation involves a hierarchical structure of small clusters forming initially and then feeding into larger clusters, which is reminiscent of the flocculation dynamics of colloids. For the first few cluster sizes, the Smoluchowski formula for the time evolu…
Conformation of single polyelectrolytes in tetravalent salt solutions is investigated under the framework of a coarse-grained model, using Langevin dynamics simulations. The chain size, studied by the radius of gyration, shows three different variational behaviors with salt concentration, depending on the chain stiffness. According to these behaviors, polyelectrolytes of fixed chain length are classified into three categories: flexible chain, semiflexible chain, and rigid chain. The worm-like chain model with persistence length predicted by the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman theory is found to be able …
The electrostatic complexation between DOTAP-DOPC unilamellar liposomes and an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte (NaPA) has been investigated in a wide range of the liposome surface charge density. We systematically characterized the "reentrant condensation" and the charge inversion of polyelectrolyte-decorated liposomes by means of dynamic light scattering and electrophoresis. We explored the stability of this model polyelectrolyte/colloid system by fixing each time the charge of the bare liposomes and by changing two independent control parameters of the suspensions: the polyelectrolyte/col…
We address the long standing problem of the dependence of the electrostatic persistence length $l_e$ of a flexible polyelectrolyte (PE) on the screening length $r_s$ of the solution within the linear Debye-Huckel theory. The standard Odijk, Skolnick and Fixman (OSF) theory suggests $l_e \propto r_s^2$, while some variational theories and computer simulations suggest $l_e \propto r_s$. In this paper, we use Monte-Carlo simulations to study the conformation of a simple polyelectrolyte. Using four times longer PEs than in previous simulations and refined methods for the treatment of the simulatio…
We have studied a bulk electrolyte, and polyelectrolyte solutions with surfactants or multivalent salt with the explicit presence of counterions and solvent molecules by means of the mesoscopic dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method in the Grand Canonical ensemble. The electrostatic interactions are calculated using the Ewald sum method and the structure of the fluid is analyzed through the radial distribution function between charged particles. The results are in very good agreement with those reported in the literature using a different method for the calculation of the electrostatic for…
We present two successive mean-field approximations for describing the mechanical properties and the swelling equilibrium of polyelectrolyte gels in contact with a salt solution. The first mean-field approximation reduces the many-chain problem of a gel to a corresponding single chain problem. The second mean-field step integrates out the degrees of freedom of the flexible chain and the ions. It replaces the particle-based description of the polyelectrolyte with suitable charge distributions and an effective elasticity term. These simplifications result in a computationally very efficient Pois…
We use the recently developed soft-potential-enhanced Poisson-Boltzmann (SPB) theory to study the interaction between two parallel polyelectrolytes (PEs) in monovalent ionic solutions in the weak-coupling regime. The SPB theory is fitted to ion distributions from coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and benchmarked against all-atom MD modelling for poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDADMA). We show that the SPB theory is able to accurately capture the interactions between two PEs at distances beyond the PE radius. For PDADMA positional correlations between the charged groups lead to…
The collapse of flexible polyelectrolytes in a solution of multivalent counterions is studied by means of a two state model. The states correspond to rod-like and spherically collapsed conformations respectively. We focus on the very dilute monomer concentration regime where the collapse transition is found to occur when the charge of the multivalent salt is comparable (but smaller) to that of the monomers. The main contribution to the free energy of the collapsed conformation is linear in the number of monomers $N$, since the internal state of the collapsed polymer approaches that of an amorp…
We study the behavior of single linear polyelectrolytes condensed by trivalent salt under the action of electric fields through computer simulations. The chain is unfolded when the strength of the electric field is stronger than a critical value. This critical electric field follows a scaling law against chain length and the exponent of the scaling law is $-0.77(1)$, smaller than the theoretical prediction, $-3ν/2$ [Netz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 (2003) 128104], and the one obtained by simulations in tetravalent salt solutions, $-0.453(3)$ [Hsiao and Wu, J. Phys. Chem. B 112 (2008) 13179]. It demon…
Polyelectrolytes such as single and double stranded DNA and many synthetic polymers undergo two structural transitions upon increasing the concentration of multivalent salt or molecules. First, the expanded-stretched chains in low monovalent salt solutions collapse into nearly neutral compact structures when the density of multivalent salt approaches that of the monomers. With further addition of multivalent salt the chains redissolve acquiring expanded-coiled conformations. We study the redissolution transition using a two state model [F. Solis and M. Olvera de la Cruz, {\it J. Chem. Phys.} {…
In a previous paper [S. Ghosal, Phys. Rev. E 74, 041901 (2006)] a hydrodynamic model for determining the electrophoretic speed of a polyelectrolyte through an axially symmetric slowly varying nanopore was presented in the limit of a vanishingly small Debye length. Here the case of a finite Debye layer thickness is considered while restricting the pore geometry to that of a cylinder of length much larger than the diameter. Further, the possibility of a uniform surface charge on the walls of the nanopore is taken into account. It is thereby shown that the calculated transit times are consistent …
We study, using extensive Monte Carlos simulations, the behavior of cationic polyelectrolytes near hydrophobic surfaces in solutions containing Hofmeister salts. The Hofmeister anions are divided into kosmotropes and chaotropes. Near a hydrophobic surface, the chaotropes lose their solvation sheath and become partially adsorbed to the interface, while the kosmotropes remain strongly hydrated and are repelled from the interface. If the polyelectrolyte solution contains chaotropic anions, a significant adsorption of polyions to the surface is also observed. On the other hand, the kosmotropic ani…
We investigate the equilibrium charge distribution along a single annealed polyelectrolyte chain under different conditions. The coupling between the conformation of the chain and the local charge distribution is described for various solvent qualities and salt concentration. In salt free solution, we find a slight charge depletion in the central part of the chain: the charges accumulate at the ends. The effect is less important if salt is added to the solution since the charge inhomogeneity is localized close to the chain ends over a distance of order of the Debye length. In the case of poor …
We develop a first-principle equation of state of salt-free polyelectrolyte solution in the limit of infinitely long flexible polymer chains in the framework of a field-theoretical formalism beyond the linear Debye-Hueckel theory and predict a liquid-liquid phase separation induced by a strong correlation attraction. As a reference system we choose a set of two subsystems - charged macromolecules immersed in a structureless oppositely charged background created by counterions (polymer one component plasma) and counterions immersed in oppositely charged background created by polymer chains (har…
A theory is presented which quantitatively accounts for the cooperative adsorption of cationic surfactants to anionic polyelectrolytes. For high salt concentration we find that the critical adsorption concentration (CAC) is a bilinear function of the polyion monomer and salt concentrations, with the coefficients dependent only on the type of surfactant used. The results presented in the paper might be useful for designing more efficient gene delivery systems.
The effective elasticity of highly charged stiff polyelectrolytes is studied in the presence of counterions, with and without added salt. The rigid polymer conformations may become unstable due to an effective attraction induced by counterion density fluctuations. Instabilities at the longest, or intermediate length scales may signal collapse to globule, or necklace states, respectively. In the presence of added-salt, a generalized electrostatic persistence length is obtained, which has a nontrivial dependence on the Debye screening length. It is also found that the onset of conformational ins…
It is well-known that the swelling behavior of ionic nanogels depends on their cross-link density, however it is unclear how different topologies should affect the response of the polyelectrolyte network. Here we perform Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the equilibrium properties of ionic nanogels as a function of salt concentration $C_s$ and the fraction $f$ of ionizable groups in a polyelectrolyte network formed by cross-links of functionality $z$. Our results indicate that the network with cross-links of low connectivity result in nanogel particles with higher swelling ratios. We also conf…
Adsorption of charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) from a semi-dilute solution to a charged surface is investigated theoretically. We obtain simple scaling laws for (i) the amount of polymer adsorbed to the surface, Gamma, and (ii) the width of the adsorbed layer D, as function of the fractional charge per monomer p and the salt concentration c_b. For strongly charged polyelectrolytes (p<1) in a low-salt solution, both Gamma and D scale as p^{-1/2}. In salt-rich solutions D~c_b^{1/2}/p whereas the scaling behavior of Gamma depends on the strength of the polymer charge. For weak polyelectrolytes…

Ion distributions in dilute polyelectrolyte solutions are studied by means of Langevin dynamics simulations. We show that the distributions depend on the conformation of a chain while the conformation is determined by the chain stiffness and the salt concentration. We observe that the monovalent counterions originally condensed on a chain can be replaced by the multivalent ones dissociated from the added salt due to strong electrostatic interaction. These newly condensed ions give an important impact on the chain structure. At low and at high salt concentrations, the conformation of a semiflex…
Mean-field theory and scaling arguments are presented to model polyelectrolyte adsorption from semi-dilute solutions onto charged surfaces. Using numerical solutions of the mean-field equations, we show that adsorption exists only for highly charged polyelectrolytes in low salt solutions. Simple scaling laws for the width of the adsorbed layer and the amount of adsorbed polyelectrolyte are obtained. In other situations the polyelectrolyte chains will deplete from the surface. For fixed surface potential conditions, the salt concentration at the adsorption--depletion crossover scales as the pro…
Mean-field theory is used to model polyelectrolyte adsorption and the possibility of overcompensation of charged surfaces. For charged surfaces that are also chemically attractive, the overcharging is large in high salt conditions, amounting to 20-40% of the bare surface charge. However, full charge inversion is not obtained in thermodynamical equilibrium for physical values of the parameters. The overcharging increases with addition of salt, but does not have a simple scaling form with the bare surface charge. Our results indicate that more evolved explanation is needed in order to understand…

We report results of small angle neutron scattering measurements made on sodium polystyrene sulfonate in aqueous salt solutions. The correlation length and osmotic compressibility are measured as a function of polymer (c) and added salt ($c_S$) concentrations, and the results are compared with scaling predictions and the random-phase approximation (RPA). In Dobrynin et al's scaling model the osmotic pressure consists of a counter-ion contribution and a polymer contribution. The polymer contribution is found to be two orders of magnitude smaller than expected from the scaling model, in agreemen…
The behavior of polyelectrolytes between charged surfaces immersed in semi-dilute solutions is investigated theoretically. A continuum mean field approach is used for calculating numerically concentration profiles between two electrodes held at a constant potential. A generalized contact theorem relates the inter-surface forces to the concentration profiles. The numerical results show that over-compensation of the surface charges by adsorbing polyelectrolytes can lead to effective attraction between equally charged surfaces. Simple scaling arguments enable us to characterize qualitatively the …
We applied the mean-field approach to a columnar bundle assembled by the parallel arrangement of stiff polyelectrolyte rods in a salt bath. The electrostatic potential can be divided into two regions: inside the bundle for condensed counter-ions, and outside the bundle for free small ions. To determine the distribution of condensed counter-ions inside the bundle, we use a local self-consistent condition that depends on the charge density, the electrostatic potential, and the net polarization. The results showed that, upon bundle formation, the electric charge of polyelectrolytes, even those in…
We study conformational and electrophoretic properties of polyelectrolytes (PEs) in tetravalent salt solutions under the action of electric fields by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Chain conformations are found to have a sensitive dependence on salt concentration $C_s$. As $C_s$ is increased, the chains first shrink to a globular structure and subsequently reexpand above a critical concentration $C_s^*$. An external electric field can further alter the chain conformation. If the field strength $E$ is larger than a critical value $E^*$, the chains are elongated. $E^*$ is shown to be a…
Understanding the effect of inhomogeneity on the charge regulation and dielectric properties, and how it depends on the conformational characteristics of the macromolecules is a long-standing problem. In order to address this problem, we have developed a field-theory to study charge regulation and local dielectric function in planar polyelectrolyte brushes. The theory is used to study a polyacid brush, which is comprised of chains end-grafted at the solid-fluid interface, in equilibrium with a bulk solution containing monovalent salt ions, solvent molecules and pH controlling acid. In particul…
A new quantitative theory for polyelectrolytes in salt free dilute solutions is developed. Depending on the electrostatic interaction strength, polyelectrolytes in solutions can undergo strong stretching (with polyelectrolyte dimension R_g\sim l_B^{1/3}N, where l_B is the Bjerrum length and N is the number of the chain segments) or strong compression (with R_g\sim l_B^{-1/2}N^{1/3}). A strong polymer collapse occurs as a first-order phase transition due to accompanying counterion condensation.
The article presents a comprehensive study of counterion dynamics around a generic linear polyelectrolyte (PE) chain with the help of coarse-grained computer simulations. The ion-chain coupling is discussed in the form of binding time, mean-square-displacement (MSD) relative to the chain, local ion transport coefficient, and spatio-temporal correlations in the effective charge. We have shown that a counterion exhibits sub-diffusive behavior $\langle δR^2 \rangle \sim t^δ$, $δ\approx0.9$ w.r.t. chain's centre of mass (COM). The MSD of ions perpendicularly outwards from the chain segment exhibit…
Using self-assembly techniques, x-ray reflectivity measurements, and computer simulations, we study the effective interaction between charged polymer rods and surfaces. Long-time Brownian dynamics simulations are used to measure the effective adhesion force acting on the rods in a model consisting of a planar array of uniformly positively charged, stiff rods and a negatively charged planar substrate in the presence of explicit monovalent counterions and added monovalent salt ions in a continuous, isotropic dielectric medium. This electrostatic model predicts an attractive polymer-surface adhes…
The structure and stability of strongly charged complex fibers formed by complexation of a single long semi-flexible polyelectrolyte (PE) chain and many oppositely charged spherical macroions are investigated numerically at the ground-state level using a chain-sphere cell model. The model takes into account chain elasticity as well as electrostatic interactions between charged spheres and chain segments. Using a numerical optimization method based on a periodically repeated unit cell, we obtain fiber configurations that minimize the total energy. The optimal configurations exhibit a variety of…
In this work, a comprehensive study about the influence on shear viscosity of polyelectrolyte concentration, persistence length, salt concentration and solvent quality is reported, using numerical simulations of confined solutions under stationary Poiseuille flow. Various scaling regimes for the viscosity are reproduced, both under good solvent and theta solvent conditions. The key role played by the electrostatic interactions in the viscosity is borne out when the ionic strength is varied. It is argued that these results are helpful for the understanding of viscosity scaling in entangled poly…
We study the adsorption of charged patchy particle models (CPPMs) on a thin film of a like-charged and dense polyelectrolyte (PE) brush (of 50 monomers per chain) by means of implicit-solvent, explicit-salt Langevin dynamics computer simulations. Our previously introduced set of CPPMs embraces well-defined one-, and two-patched spherical globules, each of the same net charge and (nanometer) size, with mono- and multipole moments comparable to those of small globular proteins. We focus on electrostatic effects on the adsorption far away from the isoelectric point of typical proteins, i.e., wher…

Ion-mediated interaction is important for the properties of polyelectrolytes such as colloids and nucleic acids. The effective pair interactions between two polyelectrolytes have been investigated extensively, but the many-body effect for multiple polyelectrolytes still remains elusive. In this work, the many-body effect in potential of mean force (PMF) between like-charged nanoparticles in various salt solutions has been comprehensively examined by Monte Carlo simulation and the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann theory. Our calculations show that, at high 1:1 salt, the PMF is weakly repulsive and a…
When calcium salts are added to an aqueous solution of polysaccharide pectin, ionic cross-links form between pectin chains, giving rise to a gel network in dilute solution. In this work, dynamic light scattering (DLS) is employed to study the microscopic dynamics of the fractal aggregates (flocs) that constitute the gels, while rheological measurements are performed to study the process of gel rupture. As calcium salt concentration is increased, DLS experiments reveal that the polydispersities of the flocs increase simultaneously with the characteristic relaxation times of the gel network. Abo…
We present mesoscopic DPD-simulations of polyelectrolyte electrophoresis in confined nanogeometries, for varying salt concentration and surface slip conditions. Special attention is given to the influence of electroosmotic flow (EOF) on the migration of the polyelectrolyte. The effective polyelectrolyte mobility is found to depend strongly on the boundary properties, i.e., the slip length and the width of the electric double layer. Analytic expressions for the electroosmotic mobility and the total mobility are derived which are in good agreement with the numerical results. The relevant quantit…
