We study salt-induced charge overcompensation and charge inversion of flexible polyelectrolytes via computer simulations and demonstrate the importance of ion excluded volume. Reentrant condensation takes place when the ion size is comparable to monomer size, and happens in a middle region of salt concentration. In a high-salt region, ions can overcharge a chain near its surface and charge distribution around a chain displays an oscillatory behavior. Unambiguous evidence obtained by electrophoresis shows that charge inversion does not necessarily appear with overcharging and occurs when the ion size is not big. These findings suggest a disconnection of resolubilization of polyelectrolyte condensates at high salt concentration with charge inversion.
The complexation of a polyelectrolyte with an oppositely charged spherical macroion is studied for both salt free and salty solutions. When a polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion, its turns repel each other and form an almost equidistant coil. It is shown that this repulsive correlations of turns lead to the charge inversion: more polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion than it is necessary to neutralize it. The charge inversion becomes stronger with increasing concentration of salt and can exceed 100%. This paper confirms that correlations are the universal mechanism of charge inversio…
Mean-field theory is used to model polyelectrolyte adsorption and the possibility of overcompensation of charged surfaces. For charged surfaces that are also chemically attractive, the overcharging is large in high salt conditions, amounting to 20-40% of the bare surface charge. However, full charge inversion is not obtained in thermodynamical equilibrium for physical values of the parameters. The overcharging increases with addition of salt, but does not have a simple scaling form with the bare surface charge. Our results indicate that more evolved explanation is needed in order to understand…
In a recent Letter, Gurovitch and Sens studied the adsorption of a weakly charged polyelectrolyte chain onto an oppositely charged colloidal particle. By using a variational technique they found that the colloidal particle can adsorb a polymer of higher charge than its own, and thus be ``overcharged.'' I argue that the observed overcharging by a factor of 16/5 is indeed an artifact of the approximations involved in the study. Moreover, I show that the existence of overcharging depends crucially on the choice of the trial wave function, contrary to their claim.
We investigated the fundamental electrical properties of microbubbles (MBs) that are directly encapsulated by the addition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (PEs). Charge-reversal of the MB-PE complex particles has been observed by the microscopic electrophoresis method, revealing unusual overcharging behaviors in MB-PE complex solutions, as follows. The critical concentrations of cationic PEs added for overcharging were not only independent of their chain lengths and molecular species, but also much larger than stoichiometric neutralization points. Thus, we provide a theoretical sketch t…
We report results from a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation on the conformations of a long flexible polyelectrolyte complexed to a charged sphere, \textit{both negatively charged}, in the presence of neutralizing counterions in the strong Coulomb coupling regime. The structure of this complex is very sensitive to the charge density of the polyelectrolyte. For a fully charged polyelectrolyte the polymer forms a dense two-dimensional "disk", whereas for a partially charged polyelectrolyte the monomers are spread over the colloidal surface. A mechanism involving the \textit{overcharging} of the p…
A study of a model rod-like polyelectrolyte molecule immersed into a monovalent or divalent electrolyte is presented. Results from the hypernetted-chain/mean spherical approximation (HNC/MSA) theory, for inhomogeneous charged fluids, {\ch are} compared with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. As a particular case, the parameters of the polyelectrolyte molecule are mapped to those of a DNA molecule. An excellent qualitative, and in some cases quantitative, agreement between HNC/MSA and MD is found. Both, HNC/MSA and MD, predict the occurrence of overcharging, which is not present in the Poisso…
Properties of polyelectrolytes in tetravalent salt solutions are intensively investigated by a coarse-grained model. The concentration of salt and the size of tetravalent counterions are found playing a decisive role on chain properties. If the size of tetravalent counterions is compatible with the one of monomers, the chains show extended structures at low and at high salt concentrations, whereas at intermediate salt concentrations, they acquire compact and prolate structures. The swelling exponent of a chain against salt concentration behaves in an analogous way as the morphological quantiti…
Colloidal suspensions and polyelectrolyte solutions containing multivalent counterions can exhibit some very counter-intuitive behavior usually associated with the low temperature physics. There are two particularly striking phenomena resulting from strong electrostatic correlations. One is the like-charge attraction and the second is the polyion overcharging. In this contribution we will concentrate on the problem of overcharging. In particular we will explore the kinetic limitation to colloidal charge inversion in suspensions containing multivalent counterions.
We study the salt-dependent conformations of dilute flexible polyelectrolytes in solution via computer simulations. Low concentrations of multivalent salt induce the known conformational collapse of individual polyelectrolyte chains, but as the salt concentration is increased further this is followed by a reexpansion. We explicitly demonstrate that multivalent counterions can overcompensate the bare charge of the chain in the reexpansion regime. Both the degree of reexpansion and the occurrence of overcharging sensitively depend on ion size. Our findings are relevant for a wide range of salt-i…
We investigate the complexation of a highly charged sphere with a long flexible polyelectrolyte, \textit{both negatively charged} in salt free environment. Electroneutrality is insured by the presence of divalent counterions. Using molecular dynamics (MD) within the framework of the primitive model, we consider different Coulomb coupling regimes. At strong Coulomb coupling we find that the adsorbed chain is always confined to the colloidal surface but forms different conformations that depend on the linear charge density of the chain. A mechanism involving the polyelectrolyte \textit{overcharg…
Counterion distribution around an isolated flexible polyelectrolyte in the presence of a divalent salt is evaluated using the adsorption model [M. Muthukumar, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 120}, 9343 (2004)] that considers Bjerrum length, salt concentration, and local dielectric heterogeneity as physical variables in the system. Self consistent calculations of effective charge and size of polymer show that divalent counterions replace condensed monovalent counterions in competitive adsorption. The theory further predicts that at modest physical conditions, polymer charge is compensated and reversed with…
Conformation of single polyelectrolytes in tetravalent salt solutions is investigated under the framework of a coarse-grained model, using Langevin dynamics simulations. The chain size, studied by the radius of gyration, shows three different variational behaviors with salt concentration, depending on the chain stiffness. According to these behaviors, polyelectrolytes of fixed chain length are classified into three categories: flexible chain, semiflexible chain, and rigid chain. The worm-like chain model with persistence length predicted by the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman theory is found to be able …
We report on the complexation between charged-neutral block copolymers and oppositely charged surfactants studied by small-angle neutron scattering. Two block copolymers/surfactant systems are investigated, poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(acrylamide) with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and poly(trimethylammonium ethylacrylate methylsulfate)-b-poly(acrylamide) with sodium dodecyl sulfate. The two systems are similar in terms of structure and molecular weight but have different electrostatic charges. The neutron scattering data have been interpreted in terms of a model that assumes the formation of …
In this communication we illustrate the occurrence of a recently reported new phenomenon of surface-charge amplification, SCA, (originally dubbed overcharging, OC), [Jimenez-Angeles F. and Lozada-Cassou M., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2004, 108, 7286] by means of molecular dynamics simulation of aqueous electrolytes solutions involving multivalent cations in contact with charged graphene walls and the presence of short-chain lithium polystyrene sulfonates where the solvent water is described explicitly with a realistic molecular model. We show that the occurrence of SCA in these systems, in contrast to …
We study the behavior of single linear polyelectrolytes condensed by trivalent salt under the action of electric fields through computer simulations. The chain is unfolded when the strength of the electric field is stronger than a critical value. This critical electric field follows a scaling law against chain length and the exponent of the scaling law is $-0.77(1)$, smaller than the theoretical prediction, $-3ν/2$ [Netz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 (2003) 128104], and the one obtained by simulations in tetravalent salt solutions, $-0.453(3)$ [Hsiao and Wu, J. Phys. Chem. B 112 (2008) 13179]. It demon…
We study conformational and electrophoretic properties of polyelectrolytes (PEs) in tetravalent salt solutions under the action of electric fields by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Chain conformations are found to have a sensitive dependence on salt concentration $C_s$. As $C_s$ is increased, the chains first shrink to a globular structure and subsequently reexpand above a critical concentration $C_s^*$. An external electric field can further alter the chain conformation. If the field strength $E$ is larger than a critical value $E^*$, the chains are elongated. $E^*$ is shown to be a…
We probe the electrostatic mechanism driving adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto like-charged membranes upon the addition of tri- and tetravalent counterions to a bathing monovalent salt solution. We develop a one-loop-dressed strong coupling theory that treats the monovalent salt at the electrostatic one-loop level and the multivalent counterions within a strong-coupling approach. It is shown that the adhesive force of the multivalent counterions mediating the like-charge adsorption arises from their strong condensation at the charged membrane. The resulting interfacial counterion excess loca…
The complexation between charged-neutral block copolymers and oppositely charged surfactants was investigated by light scattering experiments and by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The copolymer was poly(sodium acrylate)-b-poly(acrylamide) and the surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). In a previous report, we had shown that the copolymers and the surfactants co-assembled spontaneously into colloidal complexes. Depending of the charge ratio Z = [DTA+]/[COO-], the complexes were either single surfactant micelles decorated by copolymers, or core-shell hierarchical structures…
