This work develops a magnetic pseudodifferential calculus for super operators OpA(F); these map operators onto operators (as opposed to Lp functions onto Lq functions). Here, F could be a tempered distribution or a Hörmander symbol. An important example is Liouville super operators defined in terms of a magnetic pseudodifferential operator. Our work combines ideas from magnetic Weyl calculus developed in [MP04, IMP07, Lei11] and the pseudodifferential calculus on the non-commutative torus from [HLP18a, HLP18b]. Thus, our calculus is inherently gauge-covariant, which means all essential properties of OpA(F) are determined by properties of the magnetic field B = dA rather than the vector potential A.
There are conceptual differences to ordinary pseudodifferential theory. For example, in addition to an analog of the (magnetic) Weyl product that emulates the composition of two magnetic pseudodifferential super operators on the level of functions, the so-called semi-super product describes the action of a pseudodifferential super operator on a pseudodifferential operator.
We characterize the Schwartz kernels of pseudodifferential operators of Shubin type by means of an FBI transform. Based on this we introduce as a generalization a new class of tempered distributions called Shubin conormal distributions. We study their transformation behavior, normal forms and microlocal properties.
In this thesis, we studied certain mathematical issues related to the computation of the Chamseddine--Connes spectral action on some fundamental noncommutative spectral triples, such as the noncommutative torus and the quantum 3-sphere SUq(2). We showed in particular that a Diophantine condition on the deformation matrix of the torus is crucial to obtain the spectral action with real structure. We also studied the question of existence of tadpoles (linear terms in the gauge potential of the fluctuation of the metric in the spectral action) for commutative Riemannian geometries, and the constru…
There is a connection between the Weyl pseudodifferential calculus and crossed product C*-algebras associated with certain dynamical systems. And in fact both topics are involved in the quantization of a non-relativistic particle moving in R^n. Our paper studies the situation in which a variable magnetic field is also present. The Weyl calculus has to be modified, giving a functional calculus for a family of operators (positions and magnetic momenta) with highly non-trivial commutation relations. On the algebraic side, the dynamical system is twisted by a cocyle defined by the flux of the magn…
We obtain a general expression for a Wigner transform (Wigner function) on symmetric spaces of non-compact type and study the Weyl calculus of pseudodifferential operators on them.
In this monograph we develop magnetic pseudodifferential theory for operator-valued and equivariant operator-valued functions and distributions from first principles. These have found plentiful applications in mathematical physics, including in rigorous perturbation theory for slow-fast systems and perturbed periodic operators. Yet, a systematic treatise was hitherto missing. While many of the results can be found piecemeal in appendices and as sketches in other articles, this article does contain new results. For instance, we have established Beals-type commutator criteria for both cases, whi…
We construct an abstract pseudodifferential calculus with operator-valued symbol, adapted to the treatment of Coulomb-type interactions, and we apply it to study the quantum evolution of molecules in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, in the case where the electronic Hamiltonian admits a local gap in its spectrum. In particular, we show that the molecular evolution can be reduced to the one of a system of smooth semiclassical operators, the symbol of which can be computed explicitely. In addition, we study the propagation of certain wave packets up to long time values of Ehrenfest order. (Thi…
In previous articles, a magnetic pseudodifferential calculus and a family of C*-algebras associated with twisted dynamical systems were introduced and the connections between them have been established. We extend this formalism to symbol classes of Hörmander type with an x-behavior modelized by an abelian C*-algebra. Some of these classes generate C*-algebras associated with the twisted dynamical system. We show the relevance of these classes to the spectral analysis of pseudodifferential operators with anisotropic symbols and magnetic fields.
The gauge covariant magnetic Weyl calculus has been introduced and studied in previous works. We prove criteria in terms of commutators for operators to be magnetic pseudo-differential operators of suitable symbol classes. The approach is completely intrinsic; neither the statements nor the proofs depend on a choice of a vector potential. We apply this criteria to inversion problems, functional calculus, affiliation results and to the study of the evolution group generated by a magnetic pseudo-differential operator.
One can argue that on flat space $\mathbb{R}^d$ the Weyl quantization is the most natural choice and that it has the best properties (e.g. symplectic covariance, real symbols correspond to Hermitian operators). On a generic manifold, there is no distinguished quantization, and a quantization is typically defined chart-wise. Here we introduce a quantization that, we believe, has the best properties for studying natural operators on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is a generalization of the Weyl quantization - we call it the balanced geodesic Weyl quantization. Among other things, we prove that …
A review is made of the basic tools used in mathematics to define a calculus for pseudodifferential operators on Riemannian manifolds endowed with a connection: esistence theorem for the function that generalizes the phase; analogue of Taylor's theorem; torsion and curvature terms in the symbolic calculus; the two kinds of derivative acting on smooth sections of the cotangent bundle of the Riemannian manifold; the concept of symbol as an equivalence class. Physical motivations and applications are then outlined, with emphasis on Green functions of quantum field theory and Parker's evaluation o…
In previous papers, a generalization of the Weyl calculus was introduced in connection with the quantization of a particle moving in $\mathbb R^n$ under the influence of a variable magnetic field $B$. It incorporates phase factors defined by $B$ and reproduces the usual Weyl calculus for B=0. In the present article we develop the classical pseudodifferential theory of this formalism for the standard symbol classes $S^m_{ρ,δ}$. Among others, we obtain properties and asymptotic developments for the magnetic symbol multiplication, existence of parametrices, boundedness and positivity results, pro…

We derive an effective recursion for Witten's r-spin intersection numbers, using Witten's conjecture relating r-spin numbers to the Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy (Theorem 4.1). Consequences include closed-form descriptions of the intersection numbers (for example, in terms of gamma functions: Propositions 5.2 and 5.4, Corollary 5.5). We use these closed-form descriptions to prove Harer-Zagier's formula for the Euler characteristic of M_{g,1}. Finally in Section 6, we extend Witten's series expansion formula for the Landau-Ginzburg potential to study r-spin numbers in the small phase space in genus …
Weyl quantization and related semiclassical techniques can be used to study conduction properties of crystalline solids subjected to slowly-varying, external electromagnetic fields. The case where the external magnetic field is constant, is not covered by existing theory as proofs involving usual Weyl calculus break down. This is the regime of the so-called quantum Hall effect where quantization of transverse conductance is observed. To rigorously derive semiclassical equations of motion, one needs to systematically develop a magnetic Weyl calculus which contains a semiclassical parameter. Mat…
We are consider domains in cotangent bundles with the property that the null foliation of their boundary is fibrating and the leaves satisfy a Bohr-Sommerfeld condition (for example, the unit disk bundle of a Zoll metric). Given such a domain, we construct an algebra of associated semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with singular symbols. The Schwartz kernels of the operators have frequency set contained in the union of the diagonal and the flow-out of the null foliation of the boundary of the domain. We develop a symbolic calculus, prove the existence of projectors (under a mild additi…
In the presence of a variable magnetic field, the Weyl pseudodifferential calculus must be modified. The usual modification, based on ``the minimal coupling principle'' at the level of the classical symbols, does not lead to gauge invariant formulae if the magnetic field is not constant. We present a gauge covariant quantization, relying on the magnetic canonical commutation relations. The underlying symbolic calculus is a deformation, defined in terms of the magnetic flux through triangles, of the classical Moyal product.
In some previous papers we have defined and studied a 'magnetic' pseudodifferential calculus as a gauge covariant generalization of the Weyl calculus when a magnetic field is present. In this paper we extend the standard Fourier Integral Operators Theory to the case with a magnetic field, proving composition theorems, continuity theorems in 'magnetic' Sobolev spaces and Egorov type theorems. The main application is the representation of the evolution group generated by a 1-st order 'magnetic' pseudodifferential operator (in particular the relativistic Schrödinger operator with magnetic field) …
In this work, we consider fixed $1/2$ spin particles interacting with the quantized radiation field in the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We investigate the time evolution operator in studying the reduced propagator (interaction picture). We first prove that this propagator belongs to the class of infinite dimensional Weyl pseudodifferential operators recently introduced in \cite {A-J-N} on Wiener spaces. We give a semiclassical expansion of the symbol of the reduced propagator up to any order with estimates on the remainder terms. Next, taking into account analyticity properties fo…
Using the procedures in \cite{Bu} and \cite{GMS} and the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus we have developped in \cite{MP1,MPR1,IMP1,IMP2} we construct an effective Hamitonian that describes the spectrum in any compact subset of the real axis for a large class of periodic pseudodifferential Hamiltonians in a bounded smooth magnetic field, in a completely gauge covariant setting, without any restrictions on the vector potential and without any adiabaticity hypothesis.
The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfuncti…
We extend the Bargmann transform to the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus, using gauge-covariant families of coherent states. We also introduce modulation mappings, a first step towards adapting modulation spaces to the magnetic case.
In a recent paper O. Gannot and M. Wrochna considered the Klein-Gordon equation on an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime subject to Robin boundary conditions, proving in particular a propagation of singularity theorem. In this work we generalize their result considering a more general class of boundary conditions implemented on the conformal boundary via pseudodifferential operators of suitable order. Using techniques proper of $b$-calculus and of twisted Sobolev spaces, we prove also for the case in hand a propagation of singularity theorem along generalized broken bicharacteristics, hig…
We describe a reproduction procedure which, given a solution of the $\mathfrak{gl}_{M|N}$ Gaudin Bethe ansatz equation associated to a tensor product of polynomial modules, produces a family $P$ of other solutions called the population. To a population we associate a rational pseudodifferential operator $R$ and a superspace $W$ of rational functions. We show that if at least one module is typical then the population $P$ is canonically identified with the set of minimal factorizations of $R$ and with the space of full superflags in $W$. We conjecture that the singular eigenvectors (up to rescal…
We introduce and study a "desingularization" of a Lie groupoid $G$ along an "$A(G)$-tame" submanifold $L$ of the space of units $M$. An $A(G)$-tame submanifold $L \subset M$ is one that has, by definition, a tubular neighborhood on which $A(G)$ becomes a thick pull-back Lie algebroid. The construction of the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ of $G$ along $L$ is based on a canonical fibered pull-back groupoid structure result for $G$ in a neighborhood of the tame $A(G)$-submanifold $L \subset M$. This local structure result is obtained by integrating a certain groupoid morphism, using results of Moer…
