We report on the investigation of the magnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ based on muon-spin spectroscopy and ac magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) measurements. The dependence of the internal field at the muon site on temperature is indicative of a ferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic moments and only the conventional magnon scattering governs the longitudinal relaxation rate at low temperatures. At the same time, we observe a rich phenomenology for the imaginary component of the susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}$ by means of both standard ac susceptibility and a novel technique based on a microwave coplanar waveguide resonator. In particular, we detect activated trends for several features in $χ^{\prime\prime}$ over frequencies spanning ten orders of magnitude. We interpret our results in terms of the complex dynamics of vortices and antivortices influenced by the underlying structure of magnetic domains.
A thermodynamically stable vortex-antivortex pattern has been revealed in mesoscopic type I superconducting triangles, contrary to type II superconductors where similar patterns are unstable. The stable vortex-antivortex "molecule" appears due to the interplay between two factors: a repulsive vortex-antivortex interaction in type I superconductors and the vortex confinement in the triangle.
The relaxation iterative method is used to minimize Ginzburg-Landau model for the two-band superconductor with Josephson-coupling. A stable spontaneous vortex-antivortex pair with long range order has been revealed. Our result appears due to the Josephson-coupling effect, which leads to a linearly-dependence of total free energy on the distance between vortex-antivortex pair, hence accounts for this phenomenon.
In submicron superconducting squares in a homogeneous magnetic field, Ginzburg-Landau theory may admit solutions of the vortex-antivortex type, conforming with the symmetry of the sample [Chibotaru et al., Nature 408, 833 (2000)]. Here we show that these fascinating, but never experimentally observed states, can be enforced by artificial fourfold pinning, with their diagnostic features enhanced by orders of magnitude. The second-order nucleation of vortex-antivortex molecules can be driven either by temperature or applied magnetic field, with stable asymmetric vortex-antivortex equilibria foun…
Within the Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we predict two novel mechanisms of vortex-antivortex nucleation in a magnetically nanostructured superconductor. Although counterintuitive, nucleation of vortex-antivortex pairs can be activated in a superconducting (SC) film covered by arrays of submicron ferromagnets (FMs) when exposed to an external homogeneous magnetic field. In another scenario, we predict the thermal induction of vortex-antivortex configurations in SC/FM samples. This phenomenon leads to a new type of Little-Parks oscillations of the FM magnetization-temperature phase boundary of the…
Vortex-antivortex arrays that are created in a type-II superconducting film by lattices of ferromagnetic dots with perpendicular anisotropy have been investigated. The highest critical current is shifted to a nonzero value of the applied field, and current-voltage characteristics show different regimes of vortex motion even in zero-applied field due to the presence of the vortex-antivortex arrays. Creep of interstitial vortices is observed at low driving forces. This flux creep is strongly field-polarity dependent.
We study the superconducting pairing symmetry in twisted bilayer graphene by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for all electrons in moiré supercells. With increasing the pairing potential, the system evolves from the mixed nontopological $d+id$ and $p+ip$ phase to the $s+p+d$ phase via the first-order phase transition. In the time-reversal symmetry breaking $d+id$ and $p+ip$ phase, vortex and antivortex lattices accompanying spontaneous supercurrent are induced by the twist. The superconducting order parameter is nonuniform in the moiré unit cell. Nevertheless, the superconducting gap …
The small size vortex-antivortex pairs proliferation in type II superconducting film is considered for the wide interval of temperatures below Tc. The corresponding contribution to free energy is calculated. It is shown that these fluctuations give the main contribution to the heat capacity of the film both at low temperatures and in the vicinity of transition.
Using low-temperature Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) we provide direct experimental evidence for spontaneous vortex phase (SVP) formation in EuFe$_2$(As$_{0.79}$P$_{0.21}$)$_2$ single crystal with the superconducting $T^{\rm 0}_{\rm SC}=23.6$~K and ferromagnetic $T_{\rm FM}\sim17.7$~K transition temperatures. Spontaneous vortex-antivortex (V-AV) pairs are imaged in the vicinity of $T_{\rm FM}$. Also, upon cooling cycle near $T_{\rm FM}$ we observe the first-order transition from the short period domain structure, which appears in the Meissner state, into the long period domain structure with …
Symmetry-induced vortex-antivortex configurations in superconducting squares and triangles were predicted earlier; yet, they have not been resolved in experiment up to date. Namely, with vortex-antivortex states being highly unstable with respect to defects and temperature fluctuations, it is very unlikely that samples can be fabricated with the needed quality. Here we show how these drawbacks can be overcome by strategically placed nanoholes in the sample. As a result, (i) the actual shape of the sample becomes far less important, (ii) the stability of the vortex-antivortex configurations in …
The dynamics of the annihilation of a vortex-antivortex pair is investigated. The pair is activated magnetically during the run of a simulated hysteresis loop on a square mesoscopic superconducting cylinder with an antidot inserted at its center. We study the nucleation of vortices and antivortices by first increasing the magnetic field, applied parallel to the axis of the sample, from zero until the first vortex is created. A further increase of the field pulls the vortex in, until it reaches the antidot. As the polarity of the field is reversed, an antivortex enters the scene, travels toward…
The manipulation and control of vortex states in superconducting systems are of great interest in view of possible applications, for which mesoscopic materials are good candidates. In this work, we studied the annihilation dynamics and the dissipative aspects of an Abrikosov's vortex-antivortex pair in a mesoscopic superconducting system with a concentric hole. The generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations were numerically solved. The main result is the appearance of a phase slip-like line due to the elongation of the vortex and antivortex cores. Under specific circumstances, therma…
We explore the flux front patterns during virgin penetration and after remagnetization in the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}. After remagnetization we observe an instability characterized by turbulent dynamics at the vortex-antivortex boundary. Associated with the turbulent flux boundary a band of excess current density is observed. The turbulence is contrasted with the instability observed in the cuprate superconductors. Our results suggest turbulent instability at the vortex-antivortex interface may be a common feature in all remagnetized type-II superconductors.
In this work we solved the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, TDGL, to simulate two superconducting systems with different lateral sizes and with an antidot inserted in the center. Then, by cycling the external magnetic field, the creation and annihilation dynamics of a vortex-antivortex pair was studied as well as the range of temperatures for which such processes could occur. We verified that in the annihilation process both vortex and antivortex acquire an elongated format while an accelerated motion takes place.
We solve the Ginzburg-Landau equation (GLE) for the mesoscopic superconducting thin film of the square shape in the magnetic field for the wide range of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter 0.05< kappa. We focus on the region of the field where formation of the antivortex has been reported previously. We found that the phase with the antivortex exists in the broad range of parameters. When the coherence length decreases the topological phase transition to the phase with the same total vorticity and a reduced symmetry takes place. The giant vortex with the vorticity m=3 is found to be unstable for any…
The magnetic flux noise induced by vortices in thin superconducting films is studied. Rigid vortices in thin films as well as pancake vortices in the pancake gas regime are addressed. The vortex dynamics is described by a Feynman path integral which fully accounts for the balance between vortex entropy and vortex energetics. We find that vortex pair creation (annihilation) in the presence of pinning is a natural source for noise with a 1/f spectrum.
Novel vortex structures are found when a thin superconducting film (SC) is covered with a lattice of out-of-plane magnetized magnetic dots (MDs). The stray magnetic field of the dots confines the vortices to the MD regions, surrounded by antivortices which "crystallize" into regular lattices. First and second order transitions are found as magnetic array is made sparser or MD-magnetization larger. For sparse MD-arrays fractional vortex-antivortex states are formed, where the crystal-symmetry is combined with a non-uniform "charge" distribution. We demonstrate that due to the (anti)vortices and…
Antagonistic symmetries of superconducting polygons and their induced multi-vortex states in a homogeneous magnetic field may lead to appearance of antivortices in the vicinity of the superconducting/normal state boundary (where mesoscopic confinement is particularly strong). Resulting vortex-antivortex (V-Av) molecules match the sample symmetry, but are extremely sensitive to defects and fluctuations and remain undetected experimentally. Here we show that V-Av states can re-appear deep in the superconducting state due to an array of perforations in a polygonal setting, surrounding a central h…
We investigate theoretically vortex-antivortex (v-av) matter moving in thin superconducting films with a regular array of in-plane magnetic dipoles. Our model considers v-av pair creation induced by the local current density generated by the magnetic texture and the transport current and simulates the dynamics of vortices and antivortices by numerical integration of the Langevin equation of motion. Calculations of the transport properties at zero applied field show a strong dependence of the v-av dynamics on the current intensity and direction. The dynamics of the v-av matter is characterized …
Computer modeling is reported about the creation and pinning of a magnetic vortex-antivortex (V-AV) pair in a superconducting thin film, due to the magnetic field of a vertical magnetic dipole above the film, and two antidot pins inside the film. For film thickness $= 0.1ξ$, $κ= 2$, and no pins, we find the film carries two V-AV pairs at steady state in the imposed flux range $2.10Φ_0 < Φ^+ < 3.0Φ_0$, and no pairs below. With two antidot pins suitably introduced into the film, a single V-AV pair can be stable in the film for $Φ^+ \ge 1.3Φ_0$. At pin separation $\ge 17ξ$, we find the V-AV pair …
We report the observation of a pronounced dip in the in-plane field (H//) dependence of the critical current density Jc(H) and a peak in resistance R(H) of a NbN-HoNi5 bilayer at temperatures below the magnetic ordering temperature (TCurie ~ 5.5 K) of HoNi5, which is lower than the onset temperature (~ 9 K) of superconductivity in the NbN layer. The extrema in Jc(H) and R(H) appear at fields much below the upper critical field of NbN. It is suggested that the origin of this feature is linked with the non-collinear magnetization of HoNi5 whose normal component assists in depairing of Pearl vort…
We propose a magnetic dual of the Coulomb blockade effect for quantum nucleation of flux vortex pairs in high-Tc superconducting (HTS) films and grain boundaries in zero applied field. The magnetic blockade instability occurs at θ = π, where θ is the "vacuum" or theta angle. The θ term has recently been discussed in the context of several other systems, including charge and spin density waves, topological insulators, the quantum Hall effect, and spontaneous CP violation. Our model predicts a sharp pair creation threshold current at θ = π, analogous to the Coulomb blockade voltage of a tunnel j…
To investigate Majorana fermionic excitations of a $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor, the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation is solved on a sphere for two cases: (i) a vortex-antivortex pair at opposite poles and (ii) an edge near the south pole and an antivortex at the north pole. The vortex cores support a state of two Majorana fermions, the energy of which decreases exponentially with the radius of the sphere, independently of a moderate disorder potential. The tunneling conductance of an electron into the superconductor near the position of a vortex is computed for finite temperature, and is compared t…
Unconventional d-wave superconductors with pair-breaking edges are predicted to have ground states with spontaneously broken time-reversal and translational symmetries. We use the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity to demonstrate that such phases can exist at any single pair-breaking facet. This implies that a greater variety of systems, not necessarily mesoscopic in size, should be unstable to such symmetry breaking. The density of states averaged over the facet displays a broad peak centered at zero energy, which is consistent with experimental findings of a broad zero-bias conductan…
We report a theoretical analysis and experimental observation of the quantum dynamics of a single vortex-antivortex (VAV) pair confined in a long narrow annular Josephson junction. The switching of the junction from the superconducting state to the resistive state occurs via the dissociation of a pinned VAV pair. The pinning potential is controlled by external magnetic field $H$ and dc bias current $I$. We predict a specific magnetic field dependence of the oscillatory energy levels of the pinned VAV state and the crossover to a {\it macroscopic quantum tunneling} mechanism of VAV dissociation…
We show that the low-momentum scattering of vortex-antivortex pairs can lead to very long-lived oscillon states in 2d Abelian Higgs models. The emergence of oscillons is controlled by the ratio of scalar and vector field masses, $β=(m_s/m_v)^2$ and can be described as a phase transition in field configuration space with critical value $β_c\simeq 0.13(6)\pm 2 $: only models with $β<β_c$ lead to oscillon-like remnants. The critical behavior of the system obeys a power law $O(β)\sim |β-β_c|^o$, where $O$ is an order parameter indicating the presence of oscillons and $o = 0.2(2)\pm 2 $ is the crit…
The dynamics of vortices in a 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet with an easy-plane anisotropy is studied numerically within the discrete spin model as well as analytically within a continuum approximation based on a suitable extension of the relativistic nonlinear sigma model. We find that two like vortices scatter at 90 degrees during a head-on collision, whereas a vortex-antivortex pair is annihilated into spinwave radiation emitted mainly at 90 degrees. When a uniform bias field is applied, vortex dynamics is affected rather profoundly and acquires the characteristic features of the Hall effect…
We investigate the structure of vortex-bound states in spin-singlet chiral superconductors with ($d_{x^2-y^2} \pm i d_{xy}$)-wave and ($d_{xz} \pm id_{yz}$)-wave pairing symmetries. It is found that vortices in the ($d_{xz} \pm id_{yz}$)-wave state bind zero-energy states which are dispersionless along the vortex line, forming a doubly degenerate Majorana flat band. Vortex-bound states of ($d_{x^2-y^2} \pm i d_{xy}$)-wave superconductors, on the other hand, exist only at finite energy. Using exact diagonalization and analytical solutions of tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians, we c…
We report numerical simulations of the nonlinear dynamics of Josephson vortices driven by strong dc currents in layered superconductors. Dynamic equations for interlayer phase differences in a stack of coupled superconducting layers were solved to calculate a drag coefficient $η(J)$ of the vortex as a function of the perpendicular dc current density $J$. It is shown that Cherenkov radiation produced by a moving vortex causes significant radiation drag increasing $η(v)$ at high vortex velocities $v$ and striking instabilities of driven Josephson vortices moving faster than a terminal velocity $…
The dynamics of vortices in type II superconductors exhibit a variety of patterns whose origin is poorly understood. This is partly due to the nonlinearity of the vortex mobility which gives rise to singular behavior in the vortex densities. Such singular behavior complicates the application of standard linear stability analysis. In this paper, as a first step towards dealing with these dynamical phenomena, we analyze the dynamical stability of a front between vortices and antivortices. In particular we focus on the question of whether an instability of the vortex front can occur in the absenc…
We present theoretical and numerical investigations of vortices driven by strong dc and ac currents in long Josephson junctions described by a nonlinear integro-differential equation which takes into account nonlocal electrodynamics of films, vortex bremsstrahlung and Cherenkov radiation amplified by the attraction of vortices to the edges of the junction. The work focuses on the dynamics of vortices in Josephson junctions in thin films where the effects of Josephson nonlocality dominate but London screening is negligible. We obtained an exact solution for a vortex driven by an arbitrary time-…
Very recently quasi two-dimensional (2D) systems made of attractive fermionic alkali-metal atoms with a widely tunable interaction due to Fano-Feshbach resonances have been realized. In this way it has been achieved the 2D crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime of weakly-interacting Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensate regime strongly bound dimers. These experiments pave the way to the investigation of 2D strongly-interacting attractive fermions during the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition from a low-temperature superfluid phase characterized by quasi-conden…
We have studied the temperature dependencies of the complex sheet conductance of 1-3 unit cell (UC) thick YBa2Cu3O7-x films sandwiched between semiconducting Pr0.6Y0.4Ba2Cu3O7-x layers at high frequencies. Experiments have been carried out in a frequency range between: 2 - 30 MHz with one-spiral coil technique, 100 MHz - 1 GHz frequency range with a new technique using the spiral coil cavity and at 30 GHz by aid of a resonant cavity technique. The real and imaginary parts of the mutual-inductance between a coil and a film were measured and converted to complex conductivity by aid of the invers…
Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory is used to investigate the effect of the size of a superconducting square on the vortex states in the quantum confinement regime. When the superconducting coherence length is comparable to the Fermi wavelength, the shape resonances of the superconducting order parameter have strong influence on the vortex configuration. Several unconventional vortex states, including asymmetric ones, giant multi-vortex combinations, and states comprising giant antivortex, were found as ground states and their stability was found to be very sensitive on the value of $k_Fξ_0$, the siz…
Magnetic flux structure on the surface of EuFe$_2$(As$\rm_{1-x}$P$\rm_x$)$_2$ single crystals with nearly optimal phosphorus doping levels $x=0.20$, and $x=0.21$ is studied by low-temperature magnetic force microscopy and decoration with ferromagnetic nanoparticles. The studies are performed in a broad temperature range. It is shown that the single crystal with $x=0.21$ in the temperature range between the critical temperatures $T_{\rm SC}=22$ K and $T_{\rm C}=17.7$ K of the superconducting and ferromagnetic phase transitions, respectively, has the vortex structure of a frozen magnetic flux, t…
Stability of standing flux-antiflux front in anisotropic layered superconductors is considered. We describe two assisting mechanisms destabilizing the standing vortex-antivortex front. There are anisotropy of the layered superconductors and the heat, released by the vortex dynamics. We present the conditions of the front stability for various anisotropy and heating parameters. We predict that even small vortex-antivortex heating can result in front instability. The characteristic size of the unstable pattern is estimated.
Under a strong transport current, the induced voltage in superconductor nanomembranes in a magnetic field with submicron inhomogeneity shows a pulse on a certain interval of the magnetic field. It is a manifestation of a wide phase-slip domain. The topological transition accompanying the phase-slip effect consists in the occurrence of two new loops of weak superconducting currents connecting two regions of superconducting screening currents, which are disconnected in case of vortex-chain dynamics. In the middle of the phase-slip domain, rapid dynamics of the superconducting order parameter con…
Using Ginzburg-Landau theory, we find novel configurations of vortices in superconducting thin films subject to the magnetic field of a magnetic dot array, with dipole moments oriented perpendicular to the film. Sufficiently strong magnets cause the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs. In most cases, the vortices are confined to dot regions, while the antivortices can form a rich variety of lattice states. We propose an experiment in which the perpendicular component of the dot dipole moments can be tuned using an in-plane magnetic field. We show that in such an experiment the vortex-antivort…
Within the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we show that circularly polarized THz or far-infrared radiation induces a dc supercurrent that influences the dynamics of vortex-antivortex pair formation in a mesoscopic superconductor undergoing rapid thermal quenching. The Lorentz force arising from the supercurrents promotes vortex-antivortex separation and allows survival of the vortex polarity defined by the helicity of light. Based on this idea, we propose a two-stage irradiation scheme that provides a powerful method for controlled all-optical generation of Abrikosov vor…
We have numerically and analytically studied ac+dc driven Josephson-junction arrays with a single vortex or with a single vortex-antivortex pair present. We find single-vortex steps in the voltage versus current characteristics (I-V) of the array. They correspond microscopically to a single vortex phase-locked to move a fixed number of plaquettes per period of the ac driving current. In underdamped arrays we find vortex motion period doubling on the steps. We observe subharmonic steps in both underdamped and overdamped arrays. We successfully compare these results with a phenomenological model…
Within the framework of the generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we studied the influence of the magnetic self-field induced by the currents inside a superconducting sample driven by an applied transport current. The numerical simulations of the resistive state of the system show that neither material inhomogeneity nor a normal contact smaller than the sample width are required to produce an inhomogeneous current distribution inside the sample, which leads to the emergence of a kinematic vortex-antivortex pair (vortex street) solution. Further, we discuss the behaviors of the …
We consider a thin superconducting film with a magnetic dot with permanent magnetization (normal to the film) placed on it by a method based on London-Maxwell equations. For sufficiently high dot magnetization a single vortex appears in the ground state. Further increase of magnetization is accompanied with the appearance of antivortices and more vortices in the film. We study analytically conditions for the appearance of a vortex--antivortex pair for a range of parameters. The phase diagram with diversity of vortex--antivortex states is calculated numerically. When appear in the ground state,…
Within the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, we investigate the vortex structure in a superconducting thin film with a ferromagnetic disk on top of it. Antivortices are stabilized in shells around a central core of vortices (or a giant-vortex) with size-magnetization controlled ``magic numbers''. An equilibrium vortex phase diagram is constructed. The transition between the different vortex phases occurs through the creation of a vortex-antivortex pair under the magnetic disk edge.
In type-II superconductors, where vortices and antivortices tend to annihilate, only a "ferromagnetic" vortex lattice, with the same orientation of vortex magnetic moments, is usually formed in a homogeneous external magnetic field. Using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we demonstrate that a checkerboard vortex-antivortex lattice ("antiferromagnetic vortex lattice"), imprinted onto a superconducting film by a periodic array of underlying clockwise and counterclockwise microcoils generating spatially periodic positive and negative magnetic field pulses and then trapped by an array…
We consider nonlinear dynamics of a single vortex in a superconductor in a strong rf magnetic field $B_0\sinωt$. Using the London theory, we calculate the dissipated power $Q(B_0,ω)$, and the transient time scales of vortex motion for the linear Bardeen-Stephen viscous drag force, which results in unphysically high vortex velocities during vortex penetration through the oscillating surface barrier. It is shown that penetration of a single vortex through the ac surface barrier always involves penetration of an antivortex and the subsequent annihilation of the vortex antivortex pairs. Using the …
Tunneling of vortex-antivortex pairs across a superconducting film can be controlled via inductive coupling of the film to an external circuit. We study this process numerically in a toroidal film (periodic boundary conditions in both directions) by using the dual description of vortices, in which they are represented by a fundamental quantum field. We compare the results to those obtained in the instanton approach.
The vortex-vortex interaction potential in bulk superconductors is calculated within the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is obtained from a numerical solution of a set of two coupled non-linear GL differential equations for the vector potential and the superconducting order parameter, where the merger of vortices into a giant vortex is allowed. Further, the interaction potentials between a vortex and a giant vortex and between a vortex and an antivortex are obtained for both type-I and type-II superconductors. Our numerical results agree asymptotically with the analytical expressions for large…
The interaction between a superconducting vortex or antivortex in a superconducting film and a magnetic dipole with in- or out-of-plane magnetization is investigated within the London approximation. The dependence of the interaction energy on the dipole-vortex distance and the film thickness is studied and analytical results are obtained in limiting cases. We show how the short range interaction with the magnetic dipole makes the co-existence of vortices and antivortices possible. Different configurations with vortices and antivortices are investigated.
We investigate the interaction potential of superconducting vortices at the full quantum level. We formulate the interaction potential in a constrained path integral and calculate it by the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The vortex-vortex potential is attractive (type-I), repulsive (type-II), and flat (critical) depending on a coupling constant. The vortex-antivortex potential also depends on the coupling constant at long range but is always attractive at short range.
The vortex dynamics in a low temperature superconductor deposited on top of a rectangular array of micrometer size permalloy triangles is investigated experimentally. The rectangular unit cell is such that neighboring triangles physically touch each other along one direction. This design stabilizes remanent states which differ from the magnetic vortex state typical of individual non-interacting triangles. Magnetic Force Microscopy images have revealed that the magnetic landscape of the template can be switched to an ordered configuration after magnetizing the sample with an in-plane field. The…
We consider the first appearance of vortices in a two-dimensional (2-D) superconducting film exposed to a non-uniform magnetic field, $\mathbf{B_a}$, produced by a nearby coil. The film has "infinite" radius, $R_f$, and thickness $t$ about equal to the coherence length, $ξ$. The coil is approximated as a point dipole. We find that the first vortex-bearing state to appear has both a vortex and an antivortex. The Gibbs free energy of this state is lower than the vortex-free state when the applied perpendicular field, $B_0$, at the origin exceeds the external critical field: $B_{c1}^0 = \frac{4\s…
Within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory, we demonstrate the enhancement of superconductivity in a superconducting film, when nanostructured by a lattice of magnetic particles. Arrays of out-of-plane magnetized dots (MDs) extend the critical magnetic field and critical current the sample can sustain, due to the interaction of the vortex-antivortex pairs and surrounding supercurrents induced by the dots and the external flux lines. Depending on the stability of the vortex-antivortex lattice, a peak in the Hext-T boundary is found for applied integer and rational matching fields, which…
The sheet impedances, Z(w,T), of several superconducting a-Mo77Ge23 films and one In/InOx film have been measured in zero field using a two-coil mutual inductance technique at frequencies from 100 Hz to 100 kHz. Z(w,T) is found to have three contributions: the inductive superfluid, renormalized by nonvortex phase fluctuations; conventional vortex-antivortex pairs, whose contribution turns on very rapidly just below the usual Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii unbinding temperature; and an anomalous contribution. The latter is predominantly resistive, persists well below the KTB temperature, and i…
We show that on superconducting spherical nanoshells, the co-existence of the Meissner state with a variety of vortex patterns drives the phase transition to higher magnetic fields. The spherical geometry leads to a Magnus-Lorentz force pushing the nucleating vortices and antivortices towards the poles, overcoming local pinning centers, preventing vortex-antivortex recombination and leading to the appearance of a Meissner belt around the sphere's equator. In sufficiently small and thin spherical shells paramagnetic vortex states can be stable, enabling spatial separation of freely moving shell…
