Antagonistic symmetries of superconducting polygons and their induced multi-vortex states in a homogeneous magnetic field may lead to appearance of antivortices in the vicinity of the superconducting/normal state boundary (where mesoscopic confinement is particularly strong). Resulting vortex-antivortex (V-Av) molecules match the sample symmetry, but are extremely sensitive to defects and fluctuations and remain undetected experimentally. Here we show that V-Av states can re-appear deep in the superconducting state due to an array of perforations in a polygonal setting, surrounding a central hole. Such states are no longer caused by the symmetry of the sample but rather by pinning itself, which prevents the vortex-antivortex annihilation. As a result, even micron-size, clearly spaced V-Av molecules can be stabilized in large mesoscopic samples.
Transport characteristics of nano-sized superconducting strips and bridges are determined by an intricate interplay of surface and bulk pinning. In the limiting case of a very narrow bridge, the critical current is mostly defined by its surface barrier, while in the opposite case of very wide strips it is dominated by its bulk pinning properties. Here we present a detailed study of the intermediate regime, where the critical current is determined, both, by randomly placed pinning centers and by the Bean-Livingston barrier at the edge of the superconducting strip in an external magnetic field. …
Within the framework of the generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we studied the influence of the magnetic self-field induced by the currents inside a superconducting sample driven by an applied transport current. The numerical simulations of the resistive state of the system show that neither material inhomogeneity nor a normal contact smaller than the sample width are required to produce an inhomogeneous current distribution inside the sample, which leads to the emergence of a kinematic vortex-antivortex pair (vortex street) solution. Further, we discuss the behaviors of the …
Within the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we show that circularly polarized THz or far-infrared radiation induces a dc supercurrent that influences the dynamics of vortex-antivortex pair formation in a mesoscopic superconductor undergoing rapid thermal quenching. The Lorentz force arising from the supercurrents promotes vortex-antivortex separation and allows survival of the vortex polarity defined by the helicity of light. Based on this idea, we propose a two-stage irradiation scheme that provides a powerful method for controlled all-optical generation of Abrikosov vor…
We study the ratchet effect in a narrow pinning-free superconductive ring based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations. Voltage responses to external dc an ac currents at various magnetic fields are studied. Due to asymmetric barriers for flux penetration and flux exit in the ring-shaped superconductor, the critical current above which the flux-flow state is reached, as well as the critical current for the transition to the normal state, are different for the two directions of applied current. These effects cooperatively cause ratchet signal reversal at high magnetic fields, which …
We report numerical simulations of a trapped elastic vortex driven by a strong ac magnetic field $H(t)=H\sinωt$ parallel to the surface of a superconducting film. The surface resistance and the power dissipated by an oscillating vortex perpendicular to the film surface were calculated as functions of $H$ and $ω$ for different spatial distributions, densities, and strengths of pinning centers, including bulk pinning, surface pinning, and cluster pinning. Our simulations were performed for both the Bardeen-Stephen viscous vortex drag and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) drag coefficient $η(v)$ decrea…
Magnetic mapping of defects in type-II superconductors
Studies involving vortex dynamics and their interaction with pinning centers are an important ingredient to reach higher critical currents in superconducting materials. The vortex distribution around arrays of engineered defects, such as blind and through holes, may help to improve the superconducting properties. Thus, in this work, we used the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to investigate the vortex dynamics in superconductors of mesoscopic dimensions with a large central square defect with three different configurations: (i) a hole which passes through the sample (interface with the v…
Emergent lattices at mesoscopic length scales have evoked interest in several recent contexts, e.g., in crystalline arrangements of skyrmions. It is a challenging task to determine their collective excitations as the unit cells are large and can contain complex textures. We address this issue in the oldest known example of an emergent mesoscopic lattice, the vortex lattice in a superfluid. We show that a tight binding approach can successfully describe collective modes. We begin with a single isolated vortex in a two dimensional system. With suitable pinning mechanims, the low energy excitatio…
