In this paper we address the task of visual place recognition (VPR), where the goal is to retrieve the correct GPS coordinates of a given query image against a huge geotagged gallery. While recent works have shown that building descriptors incorporating semantic and appearance information is beneficial, current state-of-the-art methods opt for a top down definition of the significant semantic content. Here we present the first VPR algorithm that learns robust global embeddings from both visual appearance and semantic content of the data, with the segmentation process being dynamically guided by the recognition of places through a multi-scale attention module. Experiments on various scenarios validate this new approach and demonstrate its performance against state-of-the-art methods. Finally, we propose the first synthetic-world dataset suited for both place recognition and segmentation tasks.
Visual Place Recognition (VPR) is generally concerned with localizing outdoor images. However, localizing indoor scenes that contain part of an outdoor scene can be of large value for a wide range of applications. In this paper, we introduce Inside Out Visual Place Recognition (IOVPR), a task aiming to localize images based on outdoor scenes visible through windows. For this task we present the new large-scale dataset Amsterdam-XXXL, with images taken in Amsterdam, that consists of 6.4 million panoramic street-view images and 1000 user-generated indoor queries. Additionally, we introduce a new…

Visual place recognition is an important component of systems for camera localization and loop closure detection. It concerns the recognition of a previously visited place based on visual cues only. Although it is a widely studied problem for indoor and urban environments, the recent use of robots for automation of agricultural and gardening tasks has created new problems, due to the challenging appearance of garden-like environments. Garden scenes predominantly contain green colors, as well as repetitive patterns and textures. The lack of available data recorded in gardens and natural environ…

Traditional classifiers are deployed under closed-set setting, with both training and test classes belong to the same set. However, real-world applications probably face the input of unknown categories, and the model will recognize them as known ones. Under such circumstances, open-set recognition is proposed to maintain classification performance on known classes and reject unknowns. The closed-set models make overconfident predictions over familiar known class instances, so that calibration and thresholding across categories become essential issues when extending to an open-set environment. …
This paper introduces a new multi-modal dataset for visual and audio-visual speech recognition. It includes face tracks from over 400 hours of TED and TEDx videos, along with the corresponding subtitles and word alignment boundaries. The new dataset is substantially larger in scale compared to other public datasets that are available for general research.
Single-view place recognition, that we can define as finding an image that corresponds to the same place as a given query image, is a key capability for autonomous navigation and mapping. Although there has been a considerable amount of research in the topic, the high degree of image variability (with viewpoint, illumination or occlusions for example) makes it a research challenge. One of the particular challenges, that we address in this work, is weather variation. Seasonal changes can produce drastic appearance changes, that classic low-level features do not model properly. Our contributions…

Many visual recognition models are evaluated only on their classification accuracy, a metric for which they obtain strong performance. In this paper, we investigate whether computer vision models can also provide correct rationales for their predictions. We propose a ``doubly right'' object recognition benchmark, where the metric requires the model to simultaneously produce both the right labels as well as the right rationales. We find that state-of-the-art visual models, such as CLIP, often provide incorrect rationales for their categorical predictions. However, by transferring the rationales…

This paper presents a cognition-inspired agnostic framework for building a map for Visual Place Recognition. This framework draws inspiration from human-memorability, utilizes the traditional image entropy concept and computes the static content in an image; thereby presenting a tri-folded criterion to assess the 'memorability' of an image for visual place recognition. A dataset namely 'ESSEX3IN1' is created, composed of highly confusing images from indoor, outdoor and natural scenes for analysis. When used in conjunction with state-of-the-art visual place recognition methods, the proposed fra…
The success of deep learning techniques in the computer vision domain has triggered a range of initial investigations into their utility for visual place recognition, all using generic features from networks that were trained for other types of recognition tasks. In this paper, we train, at large scale, two CNN architectures for the specific place recognition task and employ a multi-scale feature encoding method to generate condition- and viewpoint-invariant features. To enable this training to occur, we have developed a massive Specific PlacEs Dataset (SPED) with hundreds of examples of place…
LiDAR based place recognition is popular for loop closure detection and re-localization. In recent years, deep learning brings improvements to place recognition by learnable feature extraction. However, these methods degenerate when the robot re-visits previous places with large perspective difference. To address the challenge, we propose DeepRING to learn the roto-translation invariant representation from LiDAR scan, so that robot visits the same place with different perspective can have similar representations. There are two keys in DeepRING: the feature is extracted from sinogram, and the f…

Visual Place Recognition (VPR) in areas with similar scenes such as urban or indoor scenarios is a major challenge. Existing VPR methods using global descriptors have difficulty capturing local specific regions (LSR) in the scene and are therefore prone to localization confusion in such scenarios. As a result, finding the LSR that are critical for location recognition becomes key. To address this challenge, we introduced Patch-NetVLAD+, which was inspired by patch-based VPR researches. Our method proposed a fine-tuning strategy with triplet loss to make NetVLAD suitable for extracting patch-le…

Place recognition is a core component of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms. Particularly in visual SLAM systems, previously-visited places are recognized by measuring the appearance similarity between images representing these locations. However, such approaches are sensitive to visual appearance change and also can be computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach adapting LiDAR descriptors for 3D points obtained from stereo-visual odometry for place recognition. 3D points are potentially more reliable than 2D visual cues (e.g., 2D features)…

To address these problems, we present an Attention-based Pyramid Aggregation Network (APANet), which is trained in an end-to-end manner for place recognition. One main component of APANet, the spati…

We describe a novel approach to indoor place recognition from RGB point clouds based on aggregating low-level colour and geometry features with high-level implicit semantic features. It uses a 2-stage deep learning framework, in which the first stage is trained for the auxiliary task of semantic segmentation and the second stage uses features from layers in the first stage to generate discriminate descriptors for place recognition. The auxiliary task encourages the features to be semantically meaningful, hence aggregating the geometry and colour in the RGB point cloud data with implicit semant…

Speech recognition is a challenging problem. Due to the acoustic limitations, using visual information is essential for improving the recognition accuracy in real-life unconstraint situations. One common approach is to model the visual recognition as nonlinear optimization problem. Measuring the distances between visual units is essential for solving this problem. Embedding the visual units on a manifold and using manifold kernels is one way to measure these distances. This work is intended to evaluate the performance of several manifold kernels for solving the problem of visual speech recogni…
Humans have the ability of recognizing visual semantics in an unlimited granularity, but existing visual recognition algorithms cannot achieve this goal. The key lies in decomposing visual recognition into atomic tasks named requests and leveraging a knowledge base, a hierarchical and text-based dictionary, to assist task definition. ViRReq allows for (i) learning complicated whole-part hierarchies from highly incomplete annotations and (ii) inserting new concepts with minimal efforts. We…
Place recognition is a critical and challenging task for mobile robots, aiming to retrieve an image captured at the same place as a query image from a database. Recent work by Suenderhauf et al. [1] demonstrated improved visual place recognition using proposal regions coupled with features from convolutional neural networks (CNN) to match landmarks between views. In this work we extend the approach by introducing descriptors built from landmark features which also encode the spatial distribution of the landmarks within a view. Matching descriptors then enforces consistency of the relative positions of landmarks between views. This has a significant impact on performance. For example, in experiments on 10 image-pair datasets, each consisting of 200 urb…
