Visual place recognition is particularly challenging when places suffer changes in its appearance. Such changes are indeed common, e.g., due to weather, night/day or seasons. In this paper we leverage on recent research using deep networks, and explore how they can be improved by exploiting the temporal sequence information. Specifically, we propose 3 different alternatives (Descriptor Grouping, Fusion and Recurrent Descriptors) for deep networks to use several frames of a sequence. We show that our approaches produce more compact and best performing descriptors than single- and multi-view baselines in the literature in two public databases.

Autonomous Vehicles (AV) are becoming more capable of navigating in complex environments with dynamic and changing conditions. A key component that enables these intelligent vehicles to overcome such conditions and become more autonomous is the sophistication of the perception and localization systems. As part of the localization system, place recognition has benefited from recent developments in other perception tasks such as place categorization or object recognition, namely with the emergence of deep learning (DL) frameworks. This paper surveys recent approaches and methods used in place re…
Place recognition is a core component of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms. Particularly in visual SLAM systems, previously-visited places are recognized by measuring the appearance similarity between images representing these locations. However, such approaches are sensitive to visual appearance change and also can be computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach adapting LiDAR descriptors for 3D points obtained from stereo-visual odometry for place recognition. 3D points are potentially more reliable than 2D visual cues (e.g., 2D features)…
This work proposes a new method for place recognition based on the scene architecture. From depth video, we compute the 3D model and we derive and describe geometrically the 2D map from which the scene descriptor is deduced to constitute the core of the proposed algorithm. The obtained results show the efficiency and the robustness of the propounded descriptor to scene appearance changes and light variations.

In this paper we address the task of visual place recognition (VPR), where the goal is to retrieve the correct GPS coordinates of a given query image against a huge geotagged gallery. While recent works have shown that building descriptors incorporating semantic and appearance information is beneficial, current state-of-the-art methods opt for a top down definition of the significant semantic content. Here we present the first VPR algorithm that learns robust global embeddings from both visual appearance and semantic content of the data, with the segmentation process being dynamically guided b…

In the last few years, Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (D-CNNs) have shown state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance for Visual Place Recognition (VPR), a pivotal component of long-term intelligent robotic vision (vision-aware localization and navigation systems). The prestigious generalization power of D-CNNs gained upon training on large scale places datasets and learned persistent image regions which are found to be robust for specific place recognition under changing conditions and camera viewpoints. However, against the computation and power intensive D-CNNs based VPR algorithms that are emp…
Gait recognition under multiple views is an important computer vision and pattern recognition task. In the emerging convolutional neural network based approaches, the information of view angle is ignored to some extent. Instead of direct view estimation and training view-specific recognition models, we propose a compatible framework that can embed view information into existing architectures of gait recognition. The embedding is simply achieved by a selective projection layer. Experimental results on two large public datasets show that the proposed framework is very effective.
Visual place recognition is one of the essential and challenging problems in the fields of robotics. In this letter, we for the first time explore the use of multi-modal fusion of semantic and visual modalities in dynamics-invariant space to improve place recognition in dynamic environments. We achieve this by first designing a novel deep learning architecture to generate the static semantic segmentation and recover the static image directly from the corresponding dynamic image. We then innovatively leverage the spatial-pyramid-matching model to encode the static semantic segmentation into fea…

Our pipeline purely relies on spatial localization and semantic information of road markings. The creation of the database of road markings sequences is performed online, which makes the method applicable for real-time loop closure for visual SLAM techniques. Furthermore, our algorithm is robust to various weather conditions, occlusions from vehicles, and shadows. We have performed an extensive number of experiments which highlight the effectiveness and scalability of…

Visual place recognition is challenging in the urban environment and is usually viewed as a large scale image retrieval task. The intrinsic challenges in place recognition exist that the confusing objects such as cars and trees frequently occur in the complex urban scene, and buildings with repetitive structures may cause over-counting and the burstiness problem degrading the image representations. To address these problems, we present an Attention-based Pyramid Aggregation Network (APANet), which is trained in an end-to-end manner for place recognition. One main component of APANet, the spati…

The fundamental problem of visual place recognition is generating robust image representations which are not only insensitive to environmental changes but also distinguishable to different places. Taking advantage of the feature extraction ability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), we further investigate how to localize discriminative visual landmarks that positively contribute to the similarity measurement, such as buildings and vegetations. In particular, a Landmark Localization Network (LLN) is designed to ind…

We describe a novel approach to indoor place recognition from RGB point clouds based on aggregating low-level colour and geometry features with high-level implicit semantic features. It uses a 2-stage deep learning framework, in which the first stage is trained for the auxiliary task of semantic segmentation and the second stage uses features from layers in the first stage to generate discriminate descriptors for place recognition. The auxiliary task encourages the features to be semantically meaningful, hence aggregating the geometry and colour in the RGB point cloud data with implicit semant…

Place recognition is a critical and challenging task for mobile robots, aiming to retrieve an image captured at the same place as a query image from a database. Existing methods tend to fail while robots move autonomously under occlusion (e.g., car, bus, truck) and changing appearance (e.g., illumination changes, seasonal variation). Because they encode the image into only one code, entangling place features with appearance and occlusion features. To overcome this limitation, we propose PROCA, an unsupervised approach to decompose the image representation into three codes: a place code used as…

Recent work by Suenderhauf et al. [1] demonstrated improved visual place recognition using proposal regions coupled with features from convolutional neural networks (CNN) to match landmarks between views. In this work we extend the approach by introducing descriptors built from landmark features which also encode the spatial distribution of the landmarks within a view. Matching descriptors then enforces consistency of the relative positions of landmarks between views. This has a significant impact on performance. For example, in experiments on 10 image-pair datasets, each consisting of 200 urb…
