Place recognition is one of the most fundamental topics in computer vision and robotics communities, where the task is to accurately and efficiently recognize the location of a given query image. Despite years of wisdom accumulated in this field, place recognition still remains an open problem due to the various ways in which the appearance of real-world places may differ. This paper presents an overview of the place recognition literature. Since condition invariant and viewpoint invariant features are essential factors to long-term robust visual place recognition system, We start with traditional image description methodology developed in the past, which exploit techniques from image retrieval field. Recently, the rapid advances of related fields such as object detection and image classification have inspired a new technique to improve visual place recognition system, i.e., convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Thus we then introduce recent progress of visual place recognition system based on CNNs to automatically learn better image representations for places. Eventually, we close with discussions and future work of place recognition.

Privacy-enhancing technologies are technologies that implement fundamental data protection principles. With respect to biometric recognition, different types of privacy-enhancing technologies have been introduced for protecting stored biometric data which are generally classified as sensitive. In this regard, various taxonomies and conceptual categorizations have been proposed and standardization activities have been carried out. However, these efforts have mainly been devoted to certain sub-categories of privacy-enhancing technologies and therefore lack generalization. This work provides an o…

Face recognition is a widely used biometric approach. Face recognition technology has developed rapidly in recent years and it is more direct, user friendly and convenient compared to other methods. But face recognition systems are vulnerable to spoof attacks made by non-real faces. It is an easy way to spoof face recognition systems by facial pictures such as portrait photographs. A secure system needs Liveness detection in order to guard against such spoofing. In this work, face liveness detection approaches are categorized based on the various types techniques used for liveness detection. T…

The performance of a biometric system that relies on a single biometric modality (e.g., fingerprints only) is often stymied by various factors such as poor data quality or limited scalability. Multibiometric systems utilize the principle of fusion to combine information from multiple sources in order to improve recognition accuracy whilst addressing some of the limitations of single-biometric systems. The past two decades have witnessed the development of a large number of biometric fusion schemes. This paper presents an overview of biometric fusion with specific focus on three questions: what…

In the last few years, Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (D-CNNs) have shown state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance for Visual Place Recognition (VPR), a pivotal component of long-term intelligent robotic vision (vision-aware localization and navigation systems). The prestigious generalization power of D-CNNs gained upon training on large scale places datasets and learned persistent image regions which are found to be robust for specific place recognition under changing conditions and camera viewpoints. However, against the computation and power intensive D-CNNs based VPR algorithms that are emp…

Visual place recognition is challenging in the urban environment and is usually viewed as a large scale image retrieval task. The intrinsic challenges in place recognition exist that the confusing objects such as cars and trees frequently occur in the complex urban scene, and buildings with repetitive structures may cause over-counting and the burstiness problem degrading the image representations. To address these problems, we present an Attention-based Pyramid Aggregation Network (APANet), which is trained in an end-to-end manner for place recognition. One main component of APANet, the spati…

In the following, we argue that due to variations of this practical context and individual design decisions, place recognition experiments are barely comparable across different papers and that there is a variety of properties that can change from one experiment to another. We present a Visual Place Recognition system that follows the two-stage format common to image retrieval pipelines. The system encodes images of places by employing the activations of different layers of a pre-trained, off-the-shelf, VGG16 Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture. In the first stage of our method and given a query image of a place, a number of top candidate images is retrieved from a previously stored database of places. In the second stage, we propose an exhaustive comparison of the query image against these candidates by encoding semantic and spatial information in th…

As an essential component of visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), place recognition is crucial for robot navigation and autonomous driving. Existing methods often formulate visual place recognition as feature matching, which is computationally expensive for many robotic applications with limited computing power, e.g., autonomous driving and cleaning robot. Inspired by the fact that human beings always recognize a place by remembering salient regions or landmarks that are more attractive or interesting than others, we formulate visual place recognition as saliency re-identificat…

We tackle the problem of large scale visual place recognition, where the task is to quickly and accurately recognize the location of a given query photograph. We present the following three principal contributions. First, we develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that is trainable in an end-to-end manner directly for the place recognition task. The main component of this architecture, NetVLAD, is a new generalized VLAD layer, inspired by the "Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors" image representation commonly used in image retrieval. The layer is readily pluggable into a…
Current research on visual place recognition mostly focuses on aggregating local visual features of an image into a single vector representation. Therefore, high-level information such as the geometric arrangement of the features is typically lost. In this paper, we introduce a novel learning-based approach to place recognition, using RGB-D cameras and line clusters as visual and geometric features. We state the place recognition problem as a problem of recognizing clusters of lines instead of individual patches, thus maintaining structural information. In our work, line clusters are defined a…
Visual place recognition is an important subproblem of mobile robot localization. Since it is a special case of image retrieval, the basic source of information is the pairwise similarity of image descriptors. However, the embedding of the image retrieval problem in this robotic task provides additional structure that can be exploited, e.g. spatio-temporal consistency. Several algorithms exist to exploit this structure, e.g., sequence processing approaches or descriptor standardization approaches for changing environments. In this paper, we propose a graph-based framework to systematically exp…
In this paper we propose an approach to embed continuous and selector cues in binary feature descriptors used for visual place recognition. The embedding is achieved by extending each feature descriptor with a binary string that encodes a cue and supports the Hamming distance metric. Augmenting the descriptors in such a way has the advantage of being transparent to the procedure used to compare them. We present two concrete applications of our methodology, demonstrating the two considered types of cues. In addition to that, we conducted on these applications a broad quantitative and comparativ…

Place recognition is a core component of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms. Particularly in visual SLAM systems, previously-visited places are recognized by measuring the appearance similarity between images representing these locations. However, such approaches are sensitive to visual appearance change and also can be computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach adapting LiDAR descriptors for 3D points obtained from stereo-visual odometry for place recognition. 3D points are potentially more reliable than 2D visual cues (e.g., 2D features)…

We describe a novel approach to indoor place recognition from RGB point clouds based on aggregating low-level colour and geometry features with high-level implicit semantic features. It uses a 2-stage deep learning framework, in which the first stage is trained for the auxiliary task of semantic segmentation and the second stage uses features from layers in the first stage to generate discriminate descriptors for place recognition. The auxiliary task encourages the features to be semantically meaningful, hence aggregating the geometry and colour in the RGB point cloud data with implicit semant…
