We study the quasinormal frequencies of three effective geometries of nonrotating regular black holes derived from loop quantum gravity. Concretely, we consider the Ashtekar-Olmedo-Singh and two Gambini-Olmedo-Pullin prescriptions. We compute the quasinormal frequencies of axial and polar perturbations adopting a WKB method. We show that they differ from those of classical general relativity and, more importantly, that isospectrality is broken. Nevertheless, these deviations are tiny, even for microscopic black holes, and they decay following an inverse power law of the size of the mass of the black holes. For the sake of completeness, we also analyze scalar and vector perturbations, reaching similar conclusions.
The deep reason why the equations describing axial and polar perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes have the same spectrum is far from trivial. In this article, we revisit the original proof and try to make it clearer. Still focusing on uncharged and non-rotating black holes, we extend the results to spacetimes including a cosmological constant, which have so far mostly been investigated numerically from this perspective.
We study scalar and electromagnetic perturbations of a family of nonsingular nonrotating black hole spacetimes that are solutions in a large class of conformally invariant theories of gravity. The effective potential for scalar perturbations depends on the exact form of the scaling factor. Electromagnetic perturbations do not feel the scaling factor, and the corresponding quasinormal mode spectrum is the same as in the Schwarzschild metric. We find that these black hole metrics are stable under scalar and electromagnetic perturbations. Assuming that the quasinormal mode spectrum for scalar per…

We investigate the gravitational perturbations of the Schwarzschild black hole in the nonlocal gravity model recently proposed by Deser and Woodard (DW-II). The analysis is performed in the localized version in which the nonlocal corrections are represented by some auxiliary scalar fields. We find that the nonlocal corrections do not affect the axial gravitational perturbations, and hence the axial modes are completely identical to those in General Relativity (GR). However, the polar modes get different from their GR counterparts when the scalar fields are excited at the background level. In s…
Although finding numerically the quasinormal modes of a nonrotating black hole is a well-studied question, the physics of the problem is often hidden behind complicated numerical procedures aimed at avoiding the direct solution of the spectral system in this case. In this article, we use the exact analytical solutions of the Regge-Wheeler equation and the Teukolsky radial equation, written in terms of confluent Heun functions. In both cases, we obtain the quasinormal modes numerically from spectral condition written in terms of the Heun functions. The frequencies are compared with ones already…
Linear perturbations of spherically symmetric spacetimes in general relativity are described by radial wave equations, with potentials that depend on the spin of the perturbing field. In previous work we studied the quasinormal mode spectrum of spacetimes for which the radial potentials are slightly modified from their general relativistic form, writing generic small modifications as a power-series expansion in the radial coordinate. We assumed that the perturbations in the quasinormal frequencies are linear in some perturbative parameter, and that there is no coupling between the perturbation…
We calculate the quasinormal modes of static spherically symmetric dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes for general values of the electric charge and of the dilaton coupling constant. The spectrum of quasinormal modes is composed of five families of modes: polar and axial gravitational-led modes, polar and axial electromagnetic-led modes, and polar scalar-led modes. We make a quantitative analysis of the spectrum, revealing its dependence on the electric charge and on the dilaton coupling constant. For large electric charge and large dilaton coupling, strong deviations from the Reissner-No…
Black hole spectroscopy is a powerful tool to probe the Kerr nature of astrophysical compact objects and their environment. The observation of multiple ringdown modes in gravitational waveforms could soon lead to high-precision gravitational spectroscopy, so it is critical to understand if the quasinormal mode spectrum is stable against perturbations. It was recently shown that the pseudospectrum can shed light on the spectral stability of black hole quasinormal modes. We study the pseudospectrum of Reissner-Nordström spacetimes and we find a spectral instability of scalar and gravitoelectric …
We study quasinormal modes related to gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations of spherically symmetric charged black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics. Beyond the linear Maxwell electrodynamics, we consider a class of Lagrangian with higher-order corrections written by the electromagnetic field strength and its Hodge dual with arbitrary coefficients, and we parametrize the corrections for quasinormal frequencies in terms of the coefficients. It is confirmed that the isospectrality of quasinormal modes under parity is generally violated due to nonlinear electrodynamics. As applications…
Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory is an interesting and well-motivated theoretical laboratory to explore the impact of new fundamental degrees of freedom in the context of testing the no-hair conjecture, due to the existence of hairy black hole solutions together with the propagation of scalar, vector and tensor modes. In this paper we compute the quasinormal mode spectrum of static and slowly rotating black holes for generic values of the dilaton coupling, within a weak electric charge approximation. Our results suggest that these spacetimes are stable for generic values of the dilaton coupling…
In this article we take a close look at three types of transformations usable in the Schwarzschild black hole perturbation theory: a standard (DT), a binary (BDT) and a generalized (GDT) Darboux transformations. In particular, we discuss the absolutely crucial property of {\em isospectrality} of the aforementioned transformations which guarantees that the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectra of potentials, related via the transformation, completely coincide. We demonstrate that, while the first two types of the Darboux transformations (DT and BDT) are indeed isospectral, the situation is wildly diff…
We develop a numerical solver, that extends the computational framework considered in [Phys. Rev. D 65, 084016 (2002)], to include scalar perturbations of nonrotating black holes. The nonlinear Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations for a massless scalar field minimally coupled to gravity are solved in two spatial dimensions (2D). The numerical procedure is based on the ingoing light cone formulation for an axially and reflection symmetric spacetime. The solver is second order accurate and was validated in different ways. We use for calibration an auxiliary 1D solver with the same initial and boundar…
Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models allow for different classes of black hole solutions, depending on the non-minimal coupling function $f(ϕ)$ employed, between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant. Here, we address the linear mode stability of the black hole solutions obtained recently for a quartic coupling function, $f(ϕ)=1+αϕ^4$ [1]. Besides the bald Reissner-Nordström solutions, this coupling allows for two branches of scalarized black holes, termed cold and hot, respectively. For these three branches of black holes we calculate the spectrum of quasinormal modes. It consists of polar sca…
In this work, we have calculated the polar gravitational quasinormal modes for a quantum corrected black hole model, that arises in the context of Loop Quantum Gravity, known as Self-Dual Black Hole. In this way, we have calculated the characteristic frequencies using the WKB approach, where we can verify a strong dependence with the Loop Quantum Gravity parameters. At the same time we check that the Self-Dual Black Hole is stable under polar gravitational perturbations, we can also verify that the spectrum of the polar quasinormal modes differs from the axial one \cite{Cruz:2015bcj}. Such a r…
The most general stationary black-hole solution of Einstein-Maxwell theory in vacuum is the Kerr-Newman metric, specified by three parameters: mass M, spin J and charge Q. Within classical general relativity, the most important and challenging open problem in black-hole perturbation theory is the study of gravitational and electromagnetic fields in the Kerr-Newman geometry, because of the indissoluble coupling of the perturbation functions. Here we circumvent this long-standing problem by working in the slow-rotation limit. We compute the quasinormal modes up to linear order in J for any value…
Quasinormal modes of perturbed black holes have recently gained much interest because of their tight relations with the gravitational wave signals emitted during the post-merger phase of a binary black hole coalescence. One of the intriguing features of these modes is that they respect the no-hair theorem, and hence, they can be used to test black hole space-times and the underlying gravitational theory. In this paper, we exhibit three different aspects of how black hole quasinormal modes could be altered in theories beyond Einstein general relativity. These aspects are the direct alterations …

We present new results concerning the Proca massive vector field in a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole geometry. We provide a first principles analysis of Proca vector fields in this geometry using both the vector spherical harmonic (VSH) separation method and the Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák-Santos (FKKS) method that separates the relevant equations in spinning geometries. The analysis in the VSH method shows, on one hand, that it is arduous to separate the scalar-type from the vector-type polarizations of the electric sector of the Proca field, and on the other hand, it displays clearly the electric a…
In a recent series of papers we have shown how the eikonal/geometrical optics approximation can be used to calculate analytically the fundamental quasinormal mode frequencies associated with coupled systems of wave equations, which arise, for instance, in the study of perturbations of black holes in gravity theories beyond General Relativity. As a continuation to this series, we here focus on the quasinormal modes of nonrotating black holes in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity assuming a small-coupling expansion. We show that the axial perturbations are purely tensorial and are described by a modifi…

We study gravitational perturbations of slowly-rotating black holes in a general effective-field-theory extension of general relativity that includes up to eight-derivative terms. We show that two Schrödinger-like equations with spin-dependent effective potentials govern the odd - and even-parity master variables. These equations are coupled for parity-violating corrections, and this coupling affects the quasinormal modes even at linear order in the higher-derivative corrections, due to their isospectrality in general relativity. We provide results for the shifts in the fundamental quasinormal…

With the new physical interpretation of quasinormal modes proposed by Maggiore, the quantum area spectra of black holes have been investigated recently. Adopting the modified Hod's treatment, results show that the area spectra for black holes are equally spaced and the spacings are in a unified form, $\triangle A=8π\hbar$, in Einstein gravity. On the other hand, following Kunstatter's method, the studies show that the area spectrum for a nonrotating black hole with no charge is equidistant. And for a rotating (or charged) black hole, it is also equidistant and independent of the angular moment…
The final ringdown phase in a coalescence process is a valuable laboratory to test General Relativity and potentially constrain additional degrees of freedom in the gravitational sector. We introduce here an effective description for perturbations around spherically symmetric spacetimes in the context of scalar-tensor theories, which we apply to study quasi-normal modes for black holes with scalar hair. We derive the equations of motion governing the dynamics of both the polar and the axial modes in terms of the coefficients of the effective theory. Assuming the deviation of the background fro…

Despite recent progress, the complete understanding of the perturbations of charged, rotating black holes as described by the Kerr-Newman metric remains an open and fundamental problem in relativity. In this study, we explore the existence of families of quasinormal modes of Kerr-Newman black holes whose decay rates limit to zero at extremality, called zero-damped modes in past studies. We review the nearly extremal and WKB approximation methods for spin-weighted scalar fields (governed by the Dudley-Finley equation) and give an accounting of the regimes where scalar zero-damped and damped mod…
