Technologies operating on the basis of quantum mechanical laws and resources such as phase coherence and entanglement are expected to revolutionize our future. Quantum technologies are often divided into four main pillars: computing, simulation, communication, and sensing & metrology. Moreover, a great deal of interest is currently also nucleating around energy-related quantum technologies. In this Perspective, we focus on advanced superconducting materials, van der Waals materials, and moiré quantum matter, summarizing recent exciting developments and highlighting a wealth of potential applications, ranging from high-energy experimental and theoretical physics to quantum materials science and energy storage.
The aura of mystery surrounding quantum physics makes it difficult to advance quantum technologies. Demystification requires methodological techniques that explain the basics of quantum technologies without metaphors and abstract mathematics. The article provides an example of such an explanation for the BB84 quantum key distribution protocol based on phase coding. This allows you to seamlessly get acquainted with the real cryptographic installation QRate, used at the WorldSkills competition in the competence of "Quantum Technologies".
Climate change presents an existential threat to human societies and the Earth's ecosystems more generally. Mitigation strategies naturally require solving a wide range of challenging problems in science, engineering, and economics. In this context, rapidly developing quantum technologies in computing, sensing, and communication could become useful tools to diagnose and help mitigate the effects of climate change. However, the intersection between climate and quantum sciences remains largely unexplored. This preliminary report aims to identify potential high-impact use-cases of quantum technol…
Due primarily to technological advances over the last decade, quantum research has become a key priority area for science and technology policy all over the world. With this manifesto we wish to prevent quantum technology from running into fiascos of implementation at the interface of science and society. To this end, we identify key stumbling blocks and propose recommendations.
The development of quantum computing technologies builds on the unique features of quantum physics while borrowing familiar principles from the design of conventional devices. We introduce the fundamental concepts required for designing and operating quantum computing devices by reviewing state of the art efforts to fabricate and demonstrate quantum gates and qubits. We summarize the near-term challenges for devices based on semiconducting, superconducting, and trapped ion technologies with an emphasis on design tools as well as methods of verification and validation. We then discuss the gener…
In this presentation are discussed some problems, relevant with application of information technologies in nano-scale systems and devices. Some methods already developed in quantum information technologies may be very useful here. Here are considered two illustrative models: representation of data by quantum bits and transfer of signals in quantum wires.
Quantum technologies are currently the object of high expectations from governments and private companies, as they hold the promise to shape safer and faster ways to extract, exchange and treat information. However, despite its major potential impact for industry and society, the question of their energetic footprint has remained in a blind spot of current deployment strategies. In this Perspective, I argue that quantum technologies must urgently plan for the creation and structuration of a transverse quantum energy initiative, connecting quantum thermodynamics, quantum information science, qu…
Scaling-up from prototype systems to dense arrays of ions on chip, or vast networks of ions connected by photonic channels, will require developing entirely new technologies that combine miniaturized ion trapping systems with devices to capture, transmit and detect light, while refining how ions are confined and controlled. Building a cohesive ion system from such diverse parts involves many challenges, including navigating materials incompatibilities and undesired coupling between elements. Here, we review our recent efforts to create scalable ion systems incorporating unconventional material…
Controlling both the amplitude and phase of the quantum order parameter (ψ) in nanostructures is important for next-generation information and communication technologies. The long-range coherence of attractive electrons in superconductors render these materials as a nearly ideal platform for such applications. To-date, control over ψ has remained limited to the macroscopic scale, either by adjusting untunable materials properties, such as film thickness, stoichiometry and homogeneity or by tuning external magnetic fields. Yet, although local tuning of ψ is desired, the lack of electric resista…
Quantum communication is built on a set of disruptive concepts and technologies. It is driven by fascinating physics and by promising applications. It requires a new mix of competencies, from telecom engineering to theoretical physics, from theoretical computer science to mechanical and electronic engineering. First applications have already found their way to niche markets and university labs are working on futuristic quantum networks, but most of the surprises are still ahead of us. Quantum communication, and more generally quantum information science and technologies, are here to stay and w…
Quantum information science and engineering (QISE) which entails use of quantum mechanical states for information processing, communications, and sensing and the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology have dominated condensed matter physics and materials science research in the 21st century. Solid state devices for QISE have, to this point, predominantly been designed with bulk materials as their constituents. In this review, we consider how nanomaterials (i.e. materials with intrinsic quantum confinement) may offer inherent advantages over conventional materials for QISE. We identify the mate…
Quantum engineering seeks to create novel technologies based on the exploitation of distinctly nonclassical behaviors such as quantum superposition. The vast majority of currently pursued applications fall into the domain of quantum information science, with quantum computing as the most visible subdomain. However, other applications of quantum engineering are fast emerging. Here, we review the deployment of quantum engineering principles in the fields of solar energy, batteries, and nuclear energy. We identify commonalities across quantum engineering approaches in those apparently disparate f…
Quantum computing (QC) technologies have reached a second renaissance in the last decade. Some fully programmable QC devices have been built based on superconducting or ion trap technologies. Although different quantum technologies have their own parameter indicators, QC devices in the NISQ era share common features and challenges such as limited qubits and connectivity, short coherence time and high gate error rates. Quantum programs written by programmers could hardly run on real hardware directly since two-qubit gates are usually allowed on few pairs of qubits. Therefore, quantum computing …

Physics and computer science have a long tradition of cross-fertilization. One of the latest outcomes of this mutually beneficial relationship is quantum information science, which comprises the study of information processing tasks that can be accomplished using quantum mechanical systems. Quantum Image Processing (QIMP) is an emergent field of quantum information science whose main goal is to strengthen our capacity for storing, processing, and retrieving visual information from images and video either by transitioning from digital to quantum paradigms or by complementing digital imaging wit…
In this article, we will discuss a possibility of a symbiosis for attophysics (AP) and quantum information (QI) and quantum technologies (QT). We will argue that within few years AP will reach Technology Readiness Level (RTL) 4-5 in QT, and will thus become a legitimate platform for QI and QT.
The second quantum revolution has been built on a foundation of fundamental research at the intersection of physics and information science, giving rise to the discipline we now call Quantum Information Science (QIS). The quest for new knowledge and understanding drove the development of new experimental tools and rigorous theory, which defined the roadmap for second-wave quantum technologies, including quantum computers, quantum-enhanced sensors, and communication systems. As technology has matured, the race to develop and commercialize near-term applications has accelerated. In the current r…
Quantum based technologies have been fundamental in our world. After producing the laser and the transistor, the devices that have shaped our modern information society, the possibilities enabled by the ability to create and manipulate individual quantum states opens the door to a second quantum revolution. In this paper we explore the possibilities that these new technologies bring to the Telecommu-nications industry
Lattice gauge theories, which originated from particle physics in the context of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), provide an important intellectual stimulus to further develop quantum information technologies. While one long-term goal is the reliable quantum simulation of currently intractable aspects of QCD itself, lattice gauge theories also play an important role in condensed matter physics and in quantum information science. In this way, lattice gauge theories provide both motivation and a framework for interdisciplinary research towards the development of special purpose digital and analog q…
