We present new results from ongoing lattice investigations of supersymmetric Yang--Mills (SYM) theories in three and four space-time dimensions. First considering the maximally supersymmetric 3d theory with $Q = 16$ supercharges, we check that the fermion pfaffian is approximately real and positive, validating phase-quenched RHMC calculations. We then initiate lattice studies of running couplings and non-perturbative $β$ functions for $Q = 16$ SYM in both 3d and 4d, using a simple scheme based on Creutz ratios. Finally, we consider 3d SYM with $Q = 8$ supercharges, developing new software as a first step towards supersymmetric QCD.
We construct lattice action for five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This supersymmetric lattice formulation can be used to explore the non-perturbative regime of the continuum target theory, which has a known gravitational dual.
We provide details of the lattice construction of five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The lattice theory is supersymmetric, gauge invariant and free from spectrum doublers. Such a supersymmetric lattice formulation is interesting as it can be used for non-perturbative explorations of the five-dimensional theory, which has a known gravitational dual.
We formulate supersymmetric Euclidean spacetime Ad* lattices whose classical continuum limits are U(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with sixteen supercharges in d=1,2,3 and 4 dimensions. This family includes the especially interesting N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions, as well as a Euclidean path integral formulation of Matrix Theory on a one dimensional lattice.
We provide a simple non-perturbative formulation for non-commutative four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. The formulation is constructed by a combination of deconstruction (orbifold projection), momentum cut-off and matrix model techniques. We also propose a moduli fixing term that preserves lattice supersymmetry on the deconstruction formulation. Although the analogous formulation for four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories is proposed also in Nucl.Phys.B857(2012), our action is simpler and better suited for computer simulations. Moreover, not only for …
In Monte Carlo simulations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory the mass of the unphysical adjoint pion, which is easily obtained numerically, is being used for the tuning to the limit of vanishing gluino mass. In this article we show how to define the adjoint pion in the framework of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory and we derive a relation between its mass and the mass of the gluino analogous to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation of QCD.
By numerically investigating the conservation law of the supercurrent, we confirm the restoration of supersymmetry in Sugino's lattice formulation of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with a scalar mass term. Subtlety in the case without the scalar mass term, that appears to ruin perturbative power counting, is also pointed out.
We argue that a certain twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions with gauge group SU(2) possesses a set of topological observables whose expectation values can be computed in a related Chern Simons theory. This Chern Simons theory has been proposed as a definition of three dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity. Since the YM theory admits a discretization which preserves the values of topological observables we conjecture that it can be used as a non-perturbative definition of the quantum gravity theory.
In this article we summarise our results from numerical simulations of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(3). We use the formulation of Curci and Veneziano with clover-improved Wilson fermions. The masses of various bound states have been obtained at different values of the gluino mass and gauge coupling. Extrapolations to the limit of vanishing gluino mass indicate that the bound states form mass-degenerate supermultiplets.
We study numerically the geometric properties of reduced supersymmetric non-compact SU(N) Yang-Mills integrals in D=4 dimensions, for N = 2,3, ..., 8. We show that in the range of large eigenvalues of the matrices A^mu, the original D-dimensional rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken and the dominating field configurations become one-dimensional, as anticipated by studies of the underlying surface theory. We also discuss possible implications of our results for the IKKT model.
We resolve an ambiguity in the sign of the gaugino determinant in supersymmetric models. The result, that the gaugino determinant can be taken positive for all background gauge configurations, is necessary for application of QCD inequalities and lattice Monte Carlo methods to supersymmetric Yang-Mills models.
The one-loop corrections to the supersymmetric Ward-Takahashi identity (WTi) are investigated in the off-shell regime in the Wilson formulation of the discretized N=1 Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. The study of the continuum limit as well as the renormalization procedure for the supercurrent are presented.
Supersymmetric Yang Mills theory is directly accessible to lattice simulations using current methodology, and can provide a non-trivial check of recent exact results in SQCD. In order to tune the lattice simulation to the supersymmetric point it is neccessary to understand the behavior of the theory with a small supersymmetry breaking gaugino mass. We introduce a soft breaking gaugino mass in a controlled fashion using a spurion analysis. We compute the gluino condensate, vacuum energy and bound-state masses as a function of the gaugino mass, providing more readily accessible predictions which…
We discuss the physics of four-dimensional compact U(1) lattice gauge theory from the point of view of softly broken N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We provide arguments in favor of (pseudo-)critical mass exponents 1/3, 5/11 and 1/2, in agreement with the values observed in the computer simulations. We also show that the J^{CP} assignment of some of the lowest lying states can be naturally explained.
We study the spectrum of the softly broken generalized Veneziano-Yankielowicz effective action for N=1 SUSY Yang-Mills theory. Two dual formulations of the effective action are given. The spurion method is used for the soft SUSY breaking. Masses of the bound states are calculated and mixing patterns are discussed. Mass splittings of pure gluonic states are consistent with predictions of conventional Yang-Mills theory. The results can be tested in lattice simulations of the SUSY Yang-Mills model.
We study N=1 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice at strong coupling. Our method is based on the hopping parameter expansion in terms of random walks, resummed for any value of the Wilson parameter r in the small hopping parameter region. Results are given for the mesonic (2-gluino) and fermionic (3-gluino) propagators and spectrum.
We report on our recent results regarding numerical simulations of the four dimensional, N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(3) gauge symmetry and light dynamical gluinos.
We summarise the latest results of our collaboration concerning N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions on the lattice. We investigate the expected formation of supersymmetric multiplets of the lightest particles and the behaviour of the topological susceptibility approaching the supersymmetric limit of the theory.
We present ongoing investigations of maximally supersymmetric Yang--Mills ($Q = 16$ SYM) theory in three space-time dimensions. At low temperatures and large $N$ this theory is related to black branes in higher-dimensional quantum gravity. Building on previous work that focused on the homogeneous `D2' phase of the theory, we are now exploring phase transitions between this D2 phase and the localized `D0' phase.
We summarize our investigations of several aspects of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We present our final results for SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM simulated with Wilson fermions. We also discuss the first test of the simulations of the theory with overlap gluinos. Finally, we present some recent progresses concerning the phase structure of the compactified theory on $R^3\times S^1$.
In numerical investigations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a lattice, the supersymmetric Ward identities are valuable for finding the critical value of the hopping parameter and for examining the size of supersymmetry breaking by the lattice discretisation. In this article we present an improved method for the numerical analysis of supersymmetric Ward identities, which takes into account the correlations between the various observables involved. We present the first complete analysis of supersymmetric Ward identities in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group …
The fermion loop formulation naturally separates partition functions into their canonical sectors. Here we discuss various strategies to make use of this for supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics obtained from dimensional reduction in various dimensions and present numerical results for the separate canonical sectors with fixed fermion numbers. We comment on potential problems due to the sign of the contributions from the fermions and due to flat directions.
The spectrum of the lightest bound states in N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge group, calculated on the lattice, is presented. The masses have first been extrapolated towards vanishing gluino mass and then to the continuum limit. The final picture is consistent with the formation of degenerate supermultiplets.
We present work in progress on employing domain wall fermions to simulate N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories on the lattice in d=4 and d=3 dimensions. The geometrical nature of domain wall fermions gives simple insights into how to construct these theories. We also discuss the obstacles associated with simulating the N=2 theory in d=4.
In $\mathcal{N}$=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory the superpartner of the gluon is the gluino, which is a spin 1/2 Majorana particle in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. Combining three gluinos, it is possible to form colour neutral bound states, analogous to baryons in QCD. The correlation functions of the corresponding baryonic operators contain a contribution represented by a `sunset diagram', and in addition, unlike in QCD, another contribution represented by a `spectacle diagram'. We present first results from an implementation and calculation of these objects, obtained fro…
Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is in several respects different from QCD and pure Yang-Mills theory. Therefore, a reinvestigation of the scales, at which finite size effects and lattice artifacts become relevant, is necessary. Both, finite size effects and lattice artifacts, induce a breaking of supersymmetry. In view of the unexpected mass gap between bosonic and fermionic particles an estimation of these effects is essential.
The spectrum of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, calculated on the lattice, is presented. The masses have been determined on three different lattice spacings and extrapolated towards vanishing gluino mass. We present the extrapolation to the continuum limit which is consistent with the formation of degenerate supermultiplets.
The spectrum of particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is expected to contain a spin 1/2 bound state of gluons and gluinos, the gluino-glue particle. We study the mass of this particle in softly broken supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a lattice by means of numerical simulations. The main focus is the estimation of finite size effects. We extrapolate the mass first to the infinite volume and then to the limit of a vanishing gluino mass. The results indicate that finite size effects are tolerable on lattices of moderate size, and that remaining deviations from supersymmetry are probabl…
New results obtained within the recently developed approach to supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems are presented. The method does not suffer from the sign problem in any dimensions and is capable to provide any quantum observable with controllable systematic error. Discussed results include: the spectrum and Witten index of the D=4 system, and the spectrum of zero volume glueballs in higher 3 < D < 11 dimensions.
We derive the fermion loop formulation of N=4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics on the lattice. The loop formulation naturally separates the contributions to the partition function into its bosonic and fermionic parts with fixed fermion number and provides a way to control potential fermion sign problems arising in numerical simulations of the theory. Furthermore, we present a reduced fermion matrix determinant which allows the projection into the canonical sectors of the theory and hence constitutes an alternative approach to simulate the theory on the lattice.
We present results from a lattice study of SU(2) color, N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using domain wall fermions. Supersymmetry in this particular lattice formulation is expected to emerge in the continuum and chiral limits without any fine-tuning of operators. Preliminary results for the static quark potential, residual mass, chiral condensate and spectrum--a potential indicator of supersymmetry restoration--are presented and discussed.
In a numerical Monte Carlo simulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with dynamical gauginos we find evidence for two degenerate ground states at the supersymmetry point corresponding to zero gaugino mass. This is consistent with the expected pattern of spontaneous discrete chiral symmetry breaking $Z_4 \to Z_2$ caused by gaugino condensation.
The physical particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) are bound states of gluons and gluinos. We have determined the masses of the lightest bound states in SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM. Our simulations cover a range of different lattice spacings, which for the first time allows an extrapolation to the continuum limit. Our results show the formation of a supermultiplet of bound states, which provides a clear evidence for unbroken supersymmetry.
This talk summarizes the results of the DESY-Münster collaboration for $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with the gauge group SU(3). It is an updated status report with respect to our preliminary data presented at the last conference. In order to control the lattice artefacts we have now considered a clover improved fermion action and different values of the gauge coupling.
$\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory describes gluons interacting with gluinos, which are spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Majorana particles in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. In addition to glueballs and mesonic bound states, the theory contains color neutral bound states of three gluinos, which are analogous to baryons in QCD. We calculate their correlation functions, involving ``sunset diagrams'' and ``spectacle diagrams'', numerically for gauge group SU(2) and present an update on the estimates for the lowest masses.
