When the Rayleigh number is low, Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a nonrotating spherical shell with central gravity has symmetric solutions in terms of three-dimensional discrete rotation. All the known patterns with the regular polyhedral symmetries accompany reflection symmetry. We found a new type of steady convection in a nonrotating spherical shell by computer simulations. The pattern has the discrete rotational symmetry of a regular tetrahedron with no reflection symmetry. The convection consists of six pairs of spiral rolls placed on 12 faces of a spherical dodecahedron. Depending on the winding of the spirals, there are two possible configurations that are mirror images of one another.
We extend the notion of a shell model to stratified systems, and propose one that represents stratified, nonmagnetic, nonrotating convection at low Mach number. Motivated by profiles of background stratification that support convection in stars such as the Sun, we study numerical solutions corresponding to a highly unstable layer above a mildly unstable layer. We find that at low Prandtl number, convective amplitudes decrease with depth in the lower layer. This suggests that the suppression of convection in the deeper layers of the Sun's convection zone (the convective conundrum) can be addres…
We consider triadic nonlinear interaction in the Navier-Stokes equation for quasi-geostrophic convection in a spherical shell. This approach helps understanding the origin of kinetic energy transport in the system and the particular scheme of mode interaction, as well as the locality of the energy transfer. The peculiarity of convection in the sphere, concerned with excitation of Rossby waves, is considered. The obtained results are compared with our previous study in Cartesian geometry.
The symmetries of flow structures are often prescribed by their mechanical instability and geometry. Here, as an example, we present the homotopy of the rotating 3-fold spiral state that is robust in a spherical Couette flow towards the hybrid system with a thermal stratification effect. It has not yet been confirmed that the rotating wave state smoothly connects to the thermal stratification system. Through continuation, the most dangerous mode at a purely spherical Couette flow of $m=4$ modes of spherical harmonics is replaced by $l=4$ and $m=3$ in a purely thermal convective system. For the…
The chapter begins with a description of the annulus model of rotationg convection. The basic equations for the spherical problem are then introduced and the onset of columnar convection in spherical shells is discussed. The onset of inertial mode convection is described which prevails at very low Prandtl numbers. The properties of finite amplitude convection are outlined for a wide range of Prandtl numbers. Equatorially attached convection is considered which evolves from inertial mode convection.
A fluid between two spheres, concentric or not, at different temperatures will flow in the presence of a constant gravitational force. Although there is no possible hydrostatic state, energy transport is dominated by diffusion if temperature difference between the spheres is small enough. In this conductive regime the average Nusselt number remains approximately constant for all Rayleigh numbers below some critical value. Above the critical Rayleigh number, plumes appear and thermal convection takes place. We study this phenomenon, in particular the case where the inner sphere is displaced fro…
We present a new hybrid discrete exterior calculus (DEC) and finite difference (FD) method to simulate fully three-dimensional Boussinesq convection in spherical shells subject to internal heating and basal heating, relevant in the planetary and stellar phenomenon. We employ DEC to compute the surface spherical flows, taking advantage of its unique features of structure preservation (e.g., conservation of secondary quantities like kinetic energy) and coordinate system independence, while we discretize the radial direction using FD method. The grid employed for this novel method is free of prob…
The range of existence and the properties of two essentially different chaotic attractors found in a model of nonlinear convection-driven dynamos in rotating spherical shells are investigated. A hysteretic transition between these attractors is established as a function of the rotation parameter \ttau. The width of the basins of attraction is also estimated.
Patterns of convection in internally heated, self-gravitating rotating spherical fluid shells are investigated through numerical simulations. While turbulent states are of primary interest in planetary and stellar applications the present paper emphasizes more regular dynamical features at Rayleigh numbers not far above threshold which are similar to those which might be observed in laboratory or space experiments. Amplitude vacillations and spatial modulations of convection columns are common features at moderate and large Prandtl numbers. In the low Prandtl number regime equatorially attache…
Direct numerical simulations are employed to reveal three distinctly different flow regions in rotating spherical Rayleigh-Bénard convection. In the low-latitude region $\mathrm{I}$ vertical (parallel to the axis of rotation) convective columns are generated between the hot inner and the cold outer sphere. The mid-latitude region $\mathrm{II}$ is dominated by vertically aligned convective columns formed between the Northern and Southern hemispheres of the outer sphere. The diffusion-free scaling, which indicates bulk-dominated convection, originates from this mid-latitude region. In the equato…
We investigate the free convection processes in the vicinity of a spherical 1 kg mass standard by two- and three-dimensional direct numerical simulations using a spectral element method. Our focus is on the determination and suppression of updraft forces in a high-precision mass comparator which are caused by temperature differences between mass standard and its environment in the millikelvin range - a source of systematic uncertainties in the high-precison mass determination. A two-dimensional model is presented first, which obtains a good agreement with previous laboratory measurements for t…
The single-arm spiral roll state in the system of Boussinesq fluid confined between non-rotating double concentric spherical boundaries with an opposing temperature gradient previously reported by Zhang et al.(Phys. Rev. E, v66, 055203, 2002) has been numerically investigated in detail. It is presented that the state can exist even in a relatively thicker gap rather than that used in our previous reports as a travelling wave solution with a finite constant angular velocity.
The dynamics of convecting fluids in rotating spherical shells is governed at Prandtl numbers of the order unity by the interaction between differential rotation and roll-like convection eddies. While the differential rotation is driven by the Reynolds stresses of the eddies, its shearing action inhibits convection and causes phenomena such as localized convection and turbulent relaxation oscillations. The response of the system is enriched in the case of dynamo action. Lorentz forces may brake either entirely or partially the geostrophic differential rotation and give rise to two rather diffe…
We examine the dynamics associated with weakly compressible convection in a spherical shell by running 3D direct numerical simulations using the Boussinesq formalism [1]. Motivated by problems in astrophysics, we assume the existence of a finite adiabatic temperature gradient $\nabla T_{\rm{ad}}$ and use mixed boundary conditions for the temperature with fixed flux at the inner boundary and fixed temperature at the outer boundary. This setup is intrinsically more asymmetric than the more standard case of Rayleigh-Bénard convection in liquids between parallel plates with fixed temperature bound…
Bistability and hysteresis of magnetohydrodynamic dipolar dynamos generated by turbulent convection in rotating spherical fluid shells is demonstrated. Hysteresis appears as a transition between two distinct regimes of dipolar dynamos with rather different properties including a pronounced difference in the amplitude of the axisymmetric poloidal field component and in the form of the differential rotation. The bistability occurs from the onset of dynamo action up to about 9 times the critical value of the Rayleigh number for onset of convection and over a wide range of values of the ordinary a…
Convection occurs ubiquitously on and in rotating geophysical and astrophysical bodies. Prior spherical shell studies have shown that the convection dynamics in polar regions can differ significantly from the lower latitude, equatorial dynamics. Yet most spherical shell convective scaling laws use globally-averaged quantities that erase latitudinal differences in the physics. Here we quantify those latitudinal differences by analyzing spherical shell simulations in terms of their regionalized convective heat transfer properties. This is done by measuring local Nusselt numbers in two specific, …
We present a novel and powerful Compressible High-ORder Unstructured Spectral-difference (CHORUS) code for simulating thermal convection and related fluid dynamics in the interiors of stars and planets. The computational geometries are treated as rotating spherical shells filled with stratified gas. The hydrodynamic equations are discretized by a robust and efficient high-order Spectral Difference Method (SDM) on unstructured meshes. The computational stencil of the spectral difference method is compact and advantageous for parallel processing. CHORUS demonstrates excellent parallel performanc…
Double-diffusive convection driven by both thermal and compositional buoyancy in a rotating spherical shell can exhibit a rather large number of behaviours often distinct from that of the single diffusive system. In order to understand how the differences in thermal and compositional molecular diffusivities determine the dynamics of thermo-compositional convection we investigate numerically the linear onset of convective instability in a double-diffusive setup. We construct an alternative equivalent formulation of the non-dimensional equations where the linearised double-diffusive problem is d…
The value of the Prandtl number $P$ exerts a strong influence on convection-driven dynamos in rotating spherical shells filled with electrically conducting fluids. Low Prandtl numbers promote dynamo action through the shear provided by differential rotation, while the generation of magnetic fields is more difficult to sustain in high-Prandtl-number fluids where higher values of the magnetic Prandtl number $P_m$ are required. The magnetostrophic approximation often used in dynamo theory appears to be valid only for relatively high values of $P$ and $P_m$. Dynamos with a minimum value of $P_m$ s…
We present a new pseudo-spectral open-source code nicknamed pizza. It is dedicated to the study of rapidly-rotating Boussinesq convection under the 2-D spherical quasi-geostrophic approximation, a physical hypothesis that is appropriate to model the turbulent convection that develops in planetary interiors. The code uses a Fourier decomposition in the azimuthal direction and supports both a Chebyshev collocation method and a sparse Chebyshev integration formulation in the cylindrically-radial direction. It supports several temporal discretisation schemes encompassing multi-step time steppers a…
The relative importance of the helicity and cross-helicity electromotive dynamo effects for self-sustained magnetic field generation by chaotic thermal convection in rotating spherical shells is investigated as a function of shell thickness. Two distinct branches of dynamo solutions are found to coexist in direct numerical simulations for shell aspect ratios between 0.25 and 0.6 - a mean-field dipolar regime and a fluctuating dipolar regime. The properties characterising the coexisting dynamo attractors are compared and contrasted, including differences in temporal behavior and spatial structu…
We present an extensive study of Boussinesq thermal convection including a temperature-dependent internal heating source, based on numerical three-dimensional simulations. The temperature dependence mimics triple-$α$ nuclear reactions and the fluid geometry is a rotating spherical shell. These are key ingredients for the study of convective accreting neutron star oceans. A dimensionless parameter ${\rm Ra}_n$, measuring the relevance of nuclear heating, is defined. We explore how flow characteristics change with increasing ${\rm Ra}_n$ and give an astrophysical motivation. The onset of convect…
Convection and magnetic field generation in the Earth and planetary interiors are driven by both thermal and compositional gradients. In this work numerical simulations of finite-amplitude double-diffusive convection and dynamo action in rapidly rotating spherical shells full of incompressible two-component electrically-conducting fluid are reported. Four distinct regimes of rotating double-diffusive convection identified in a recent linear analysis (Silva et al., 2019, Geophys. Astrophys. Fluid Dyn., doi:10.1080/03091929.2019.1640875) are found to persist significantly beyond the onset of ins…
For the understanding of planetary and stellar dynamos an overview of the major parameter dependences of convection driven dynamos in rotating spherical fluid shells is desirable. Although the computationally accessible parameter space is limited, earlier work is extended with emphasis on higher Prandtl numbers and uniform heat flux condition at the outer boundary. The transition from dynamos dominated by non-axisymmetric components of the magnetic field to those dominated by the axisymmetric components depends on the magnetic Prandtl number as well as on the ordinary Prandtl number for higher…
Overshooting of turbulent motions from convective regions into adjacent stably stratified zones plays a significant role in stellar interior dynamics as this process may lead to mixing of chemical species, and contribute to the transport of angular momentum and magnetic fields. We present a series of fully non-linear, three-dimensional (3D) anelastic simulations of overshooting convection in a spherical shell which are focused on the dependence of the overshooting dynamics on the density stratification and the rotation, both key ingredients in stars which however have not been studied systemat…
We present a statistical analysis of turbulent convection in stars within our Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) framework in spherical geometry which we derived from first principles. The primary results reported in this document include: (1) an extensive set of mean-field equations for compressible, multi-species hydrodynamics, and (2) corresponding mean-field data computed from various simulation models. Some supplementary scale analysis data is also presented. The simulation data which is presented includes: (1) shell convection during oxygen burning in a 23 solar mass supernova progen…
We develop a theory of three-dimensional slow Rossby waves in rotating spherical density stratified convection. The Rossby waves with frequencies which are much smaller than the rotating frequency, are excited by a non-axisymmetric instability from the equilibrium based on the developed convection. These waves interact with the inertial waves and the density stratified convection. The density stratification is taken into account using the anelastic approximation for very low-Mach-number flows. We study long-term planetary Rossby waves with periods which are larger than two years. We suggest th…
Rayleigh-Bénard convection in rotating spherical shells can be considered as a simplified analogue of many astrophysical and geophysical fluid flows. Here, we use three-dimensional direct numerical simulations to study this physical process. We construct a dataset of more than 200 numerical models that cover a broad parameter range with Ekman numbers spanning $3\times 10^{-7} \leq E \leq 10^{-1}$, Rayleigh numbers within the range $10^3 < Ra < 2\times 10^{10}$ and a Prandtl number unity. We investigate the scaling behaviours of both local (length scales, boundary layers) and global (Nusselt an…
Convection in a spherical shell is widely used to model fluid layers of planets and stars. The choice of thermal boundary conditions in such models is not always straightforward. To understand the implications of this choice, we report on the effects of the thermal boundary condition on thermal convection, in terms of instability onset, fully developed transport properties and flow structure. We use the Boussinesq approximation, and impose a Robin boundary condition at the top. This enforces the temperature anomaly and its radial derivative to be linearly coupled with a proportionality factor …
Convection is the predominant mechanism by which energy and angular momentum are transported in the outer portion of the Sun. The resulting overturning motions are also the primary energy source for the solar magnetic field. An accurate solar dynamo model therefore requires a complete description of the convective motions, but these motions remain poorly understood. Studying stellar convection numerically remains challenging; it occurs within a parameter regime that is extreme by computational standards. The fluid properties of the convection zone are characterized in part by the Prandtl numbe…
We simulate numerically Boussinesq convection in non-rotating spherical shells for a fluid with a unity Prandtl number and Rayleigh numbers up to $10^9$. In this geometry, curvature and radial variations of the gravitationnal acceleration yield asymmetric boundary layers. A systematic parameter study for various radius ratios (from $η=r_i/r_o=0.2$ to $η=0.95$) and gravity profiles allows us to explore the dependence of the asymmetry on these parameters. We find that the average plume spacing is comparable between the spherical inner and outer bounding surfaces. An estimate of the average plume…
Motivated by understanding the dynamics of stellar and planetary interiors, we have performed a set of direct numerical simulations of Boussinesq convection in a rotating full sphere. The domain is internally heated with fixed temperature and stress-free boundary conditions, but fixed heat flux and no-slip boundary conditions are also briefly considered. We particularly focus on the large-scale coherent structures and the mean zonal flows that can develop in the system. At Prandtl number of unity, as the thermal forcing (measured by the Rayleigh number) is increased above the value for the ons…
Simple models of magnetic field generation by convection in rotating spherical shells exhibit properties resembling those observed on the sun. The {assumption of the Boussinesq approximation made in these models} prevents a realistic description of the solar cycle, but through a physically motivated change in the boundary condition for the differential rotation the propagation of dynamo waves towards higher latitudes can be reversed at least at low latitudes.
We report the results of three-dimensional numerical simulations of convection-driven dynamos in relatively thin rotating spherical shells that show a transition from an strong non-oscillatory dipolar magnetic field to a weaker regularly oscillating dipolar field. The transition is induced primarily by the effects a stress-free boundary condition. The variation of the inner to outer radius ratio is found to have a less important effect.
This study considers the onset of stress-free Boussinesq thermal convection in rotating spherical shells with aspect ratio $η=r_i/r_o=0.9$ ($r_i$ and $r_o$ being the inner and outer radius), Prandtl numbers ${\rm Pr} \in[10^{-4},10^{-1}]$, and Taylor numbers ${\rm Ta}\in[10^{4},10^{12}]$. We are particularly interested in the form of the convective cell pattern that develops, and in its time scales, since this may have observational consequences. For a fixed ${\rm Ta}<10^{9}$ and by decreasing ${\rm Pr}$ from 0.1 to $10^{-4}$ a transition between spiralling columnar (SC) and equatorially-attac…
We study rotating thermal convection in spherical shells. We base our analysis on a set of about 450 direct numerical simulations of the (magneto)hydrodynamic equations under the Boussinesq approximation. The Ekman number ranges from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-5}$. The supercriticality of the convection reaches about 1000 in some models. Four sets of simulations are considered: non-magnetic simulations and dynamo simulations with either free-slip or no-slip flow boundary conditions. The non-magnetic setup with free-slip boundaries generates the strongest zonal flows. Both non-magnetic simulations with…
We consider dynamo action driven by three-dimensional rotating anelastic convection in a spherical shell. Motivated by the behaviour of the solar dynamo, we examine the interaction of hydromagnetic modes with different symmetries and demonstrate how complicated interactions between convection, differential rotation and magnetic fields may lead to modulation of the basic cycle. For some parameters, Type 1 modulation occurs by the transfer of energy between modes of different symmetries with little change in the overall amplitude, for other parameters, the modulation is of Type 2, where the ampl…
So far, numerical studies of double-diffusive layering in turbulent convective flows have neglected the effects of rotation. We undertake a first step into that direction by investigating how Coriolis forces affect a double-diffusive layer inside a rotating spherical shell. For this purpose we have run simulations in a parameter regime where these layers are expected to form and successively increased the rate of rotation with the result that fast rotation is found to have a similar stabilising effect on the overall convective flux as an increase of the stability ratio $R_ρ$ has in a non-rotat…
We study the dynamics associated with the extension of turbulent convective motions from a convection zone (CZ) into a stable region (RZ) that lies below the latter. For that purpose, we have run a series of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations solving the Navier-Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation in a spherical shell geometry. We observe that the overshooting of the turbulent motions into the stably stratified region depends on three different parameters: the relative stability of the RZ, the transition width between the two, and the intensity of the turbulence. In …
Motivated by the recent discovery of subsurface oceans on planetary moons and the interest they have generated, we explore convective flows in shallow spherical shells of dimensionless gap width $\varepsilon^2\ll 1$ in the rapid rotation limit $\mathrm{E}\ll1$, where $\mathrm{E}$ is the Ekman number. We employ direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the Boussinesq equations to compute the local heat flux $\mathrm{Nu}(λ)$ as a function of the latitude $λ$ and use the results to characterize the trapping of convection at low latitudes, around the equator. We show that these results are quantitativ…
The surface zonal winds observed in the giant planets form a complex jet pattern with alternating prograde and retrograde direction. While the main equatorial band is prograde on the gas giants, both ice giants have a pronounced retrograde equatorial jet. We use three-dimensional numerical models of compressible convection in rotating spherical shells to explore the properties of zonal flows in different regimes where either rotation or buoyancy dominates the force balance. We conduct a systematic parameter study to quantify the dependence of zonal flows on the background density stratificatio…
Convection in rotating spherical geometries is an important physical process in planetary and stellar systems. Using continuation methods at low Prandtl number, we find both strong equatorially asymmetric and symmetric polar nonlinear rotating waves in a model of thermal convection in thin rotating spherical shells with stress-free boundary conditions. For the symmetric waves convection is confined to high latitude in both hemispheres but is only restricted to one hemisphere close to the pole in the case of asymmetric waves. This is in contrast to what is previously known from studies in the f…
