Orbital characteristics based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometric parameters are analyzed for ${\sim} 8,000$ metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $\leq -0.8$) compiled from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release 6. Selected as metal-poor candidates based on broadband photometry, RAVE collected moderate-resolution ($R \sim 7,500$) spectra in the region of the Ca triplet for these stars. About $20\%$ of the stars in this sample also have medium-resolution ($1,200 \lesssim R \lesssim 2,000$) validation spectra obtained over a four-year campaign from $2014$ to $2017$ with a variety of telescopes. We match the candidate stars to photometric metallicity determinations from the Huang et al. recalibration of the Sky Mapper Southern Survey Data Release 2. We obtain dynamical clusters of these stars from the orbital energy and cylindrical actions using the \HDBSCAN ~unsupervised learning algorithm. We identify $179$ Dynamically Tagged Groups (DTGs) with between $5$ and $35$ members; $67$ DTGs have at least $10$ member stars. Milky Way (MW) substructures such as Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, the Metal-Weak Thick Disk, the Splashed Disk, Thamnos, the Helmi Stream, and LMS-1 (Wukong) are identified. Associations with MW globular clusters are determined for $10$ DTGs; no recognized MW dwarf galaxies were associated with any of our DTGs. Previously identified dynamical groups are also associated with our DTGs, with emphasis placed on their structural determination and possible new identifications. We identify chemically peculiar stars as members of several DTGs; we find $22$ DTGs that are associated with \textit{r}-process-enhanced stars. Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars are identified among the targets with available spectroscopy, and we assign these to morphological groups following the approach given by Yoon et al.
Orbital characteristics based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometric parameters are analyzed for ${\sim} 4000$ metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $\leq -0.8$) compiled from the Best $\&$ Brightest survey. Selected as metal-poor candidates based on broadband near- and far-IR photometry, $43\%$ of these stars had medium-resolution ($1200 \lesssim R \lesssim 2000$) validation spectra obtained over a seven-year campaign from $2014$ to $2020$ with a variety of telescopes. The remaining stars were chosen based on photometric metallicity determinations from the Huang et al. recalibration of the Sky Mapper So…
Orbital characteristics based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometric parameters are analyzed for ${\sim} 1700$ $r$-process-enhanced (RPE; [Eu/Fe] $> +0.3$) metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $\leq -0.8$) compiled from the $R$-Process Alliance, the GALactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) DR3 survey, and additional literature sources. We find dynamical clusters of these stars based on their orbital energies and cylindrical actions using the \HDBSCAN ~unsupervised learning algorithm. We identify $36$ Chemo-Dynamically Tagged Groups (CDTGs) containing between $5$ and $22$ members; $17$ CDTGs have at leas…

We analyze the dynamical properties of $\sim$1500 very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] $\lesssim -2.0$) halo stars, based primarily on medium-resolution spectroscopic data from the HK and Hamburg/ESO surveys. These data, collected over the past thirty years, are supplemented by a number of calibration stars and other small samples, along with astrometric information from $Gaia$ DR2. We apply a clustering algorithm to the 4-D energy-action space of the sample, and identify a set of 38 Dynamically Tagged Groups (DTGs), containing between 5 and 30 member stars. Many of these DTGs can be associated with p…
We derive dynamical parameters for a large sample of 446 $r$-process-enhanced (RPE) metal-poor stars in the halo and disk systems of the Milky Way, based on data releases from the $R$-Process Alliance, supplemented by additional literature samples. This sample represents more than a ten-fold increase in size relative to that previously considered by Roederer et al., and, by design, covers a larger range of $r$-process-element enrichment levels. We test a number of clustering analysis methods on the derived orbital energies and other dynamical parameters for this sample, ultimately deciding on …

We explore a scenario where metal poor globular clusters (GCs) form at the centres of their own dark matter halos in the early universe before reionization. This hypothesis leads to predictions about the abundance, distribution and kinematics of GCs today that we explore using cosmological N-body simulations and analytical modelling. We find that selecting the massive tail of collapsed objects at $z\gtrsim 9$ as GC formation sites leads to four main predictions: i) a highly clustered population of GCs around galaxies today, ii) a natural scaling between number of GCs and halo virial mass that …
This paper presents the detailed abundances and r-process classifications of 126 newly identified metal-poor stars as part of an ongoing collaboration, the R-Process Alliance. The stars were identified as metal-poor candidates from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) and were followed-up at high spectral resolution (R~31,500) with the 3.5~m telescope at Apache Point Observatory. The atmospheric parameters were determined spectroscopically from Fe I lines, taking into account <3D> non-LTE corrections and using differential abundances with respect to a set of standards. Of the 126 new stars, 1…
We performed a detailed study of the ratio of low-α to high-α stars in the Galactic halo as observed by the Gaia-ESO Survey. Using a sample of 381 metal-poor stars from the second internal data release, we found that the value of this ratio did not show evidence of systematic trends as a function of metallicity, surface gravity, Galactic latitude, Galactic longitude, height above the Galactic plane, and Galactocentric radius. We conclude that the α-poor/α-rich value of 0.28 $\pm$ 0.08 suggests that in the inner halo, the larger portion of stars were formed in a high star formation rate environ…
We present the metallicities and carbon abundances of four newly discovered metal-poor stars with $ -2.2 <$ [Fe/H] $< -1.6$ in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These stars were selected as metal-poor member candidates using a combination of public photometry from the SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey and proper motion data from the second data release from the Gaia mission. The SkyMapper filters include a metallicity-sensitive narrow-band $v$ filter centered on the Ca II K line, which we use to identify metal-poor candidates. In tandem, we use proper motion data to remove metal-poor stars …

Extensive progress has been recently made into our understanding of heavy element production via the $r$-process in the Universe, specifically with the first observed neutron star binary merger (NSBM) event associated with the gravitational wave signal detected by LIGO, GW170817. The chemical abundance patterns of metal-poor $r$-process-enhanced stars provides key evidence into the dominant site(s) of the $r$-process, and whether NSBMs are sufficiently frequent or prolific $r$-process sources to be responsible for the majority of $r$-process material in the Universe. We present atmospheric ste…
We present a low metallicity map of the Milky Way consisting of $\sim$111,000 giants with $-3.5 \lesssim$ [Fe/H] $\lesssim -$0.75, based on public photometry from the second data release of the SkyMapper survey. These stars extend out to $\sim$7kpc from the solar neighborhood and cover the main Galactic stellar populations, including the thick disk and the inner halo. Notably, this map can reliably differentiate metallicities down to [Fe/H] $\sim -3.0$, and thus provides an unprecedented view into the ancient, metal-poor Milky Way. Among the more metal-rich stars in our sample ([Fe/H] $> -2.0$…
We present detailed elemental abundances and radial velocities of stars in the metal-poor globular cluster (GC) NGC 2298, based on near-infrared high-resolution ($R\sim$ 22,500) spectra of twelve members obtained during the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the seventeenth Data Release (DR 17) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV). We employ the Brussels Automatic Code for Characterizing High accuracy Spectra (\texttt{BACCHUS}) software to investigate abundances for a variety of species including …
The semi-analytical model A-SLOTH (Ancient Stars and Local Observables by Tracing Halos) is the first public code that connects the formation of the first stars and galaxies to observables. After several successful projects with this model, we publish the source code and describe the public version in this paper. The model is based on dark matter merger trees that can either be generated based on Extended Press-Schechter theory or that can be imported from dark matter simulations. On top of these merger trees, A-SLOTH applies analytical recipes for baryonic physics to model the formation of bo…
Gaia Data Release 2 provides a wealth of data to study the internal structure of nearby globular clusters. We use this data to investigate the internal kinematics of 11 nearby globular clusters, with a particular focus on their poorly-studied outer regions. We apply a strict set of selection criteria to remove contaminating sources and create pure cluster-member samples over a significant fraction of the radial range of each cluster. We confirm previous measurements of rotation (or a lack thereof) in the inner regions of several clusters, while extending the detection of rotation well beyond w…
Context. The study of the oldest and most metal-poor stars in our Galaxy promotes our understanding of the Galactic chemical evolution and the beginning of Galaxy and star formation. However, they are notoriously difficult to find, with only five stars at $\mathrm{[Fe/H]<-5.0}$ having been detected to date. Thus, the spectrophotometric data of 219 million sources which became available in the third Gaia Data Release comprise a very promising dataset for the identification of metal-poor stars. Aims. We want to use the low-resolution Gaia Blue Photometer / Red Photometer (BP/RP) spectra to ident…
The extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies analyzed in a previous paper have large star-forming regions with a metallicity lower than the rest of the galaxy. Such a chemical inhomogeneity reveals the external origin of the metal-poor gas fueling star formation, possibly indicating accretion from the cosmic web. This paper studies the kinematic properties of the ionized gas in these galaxies. Most XMPs have rotation velocity around a few tens of km/s. The star-forming regions appear to move coherently. The velocity is constant within each region, and the velocity dispersion sometimes increases wit…
We find two chemically distinct populations separated relatively cleanly in the [Fe/H] - [Mg/Fe] plane, but also distinguished in other chemical planes, among metal-poor stars (primarily with metallicities [Fe/H] $< -0.9$) observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and analyzed for Data Release 13 (DR13) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These two stellar populations show the most significant differences in their [X/Fe] ratios for the $α$-elements, C+N, Al, and Ni. In addition to these populations having differing chemistry, the low metallicity high-Mg popul…

In order to find a fast and reliable method for selecting metal poor galaxies (MPGs), especially in large surveys and huge database, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method is applied to a sample of star-forming galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 9 (DR9) provided by the Max Planck Institute and the Johns Hopkins University (MPA/JHU). A two-step approach is adopted:(i) The ANN network must be trained with a subset of objects that are known to be either MPGs or MRGs(Metal Rich galaxies), treating the strong emission line flux measurements as input feature vectors in…
Unevolved metal poor stars are the witness of the early evolution of the Galaxy. The determination of their detailed chemical composition is an important tool to understand the chemical history of our Galaxy. The study of their chemical composition can also be used to constrain the nucleosynthesis of the first generation of supernovae that enriched the interstellar medium. The aim is to observe a sample of extremely metal poor stars (EMP stars) candidates selected from SDSS DR12 release and determine their chemical composition. We obtained high resolution spectra of a sample of five stars usin…
The recent detection of a binary neutron star merger and the clear evidence for the decay of radioactive material observed in this event have, after sixty years of effort, provided an astrophysical site for the rapid neutron-capture ($r$-) process which is responsible for the production of the heaviest elements in our Universe. However, observations of metal-poor stars with highly-enhanced $r$-process elements have revealed abundance patterns suggesting that multiple sites may be involved. To address this issue, and to advance our understanding of the $r$-process, we have initiated an extensiv…
We identify six new CEMP stars ([C/Fe]>+0.7 and [Fe/H]< -1.8) and another seven likely candidates within the APOGEE database following Data Release 12. These stars have chemical compositions typical of metal-poor halo stars, e.g., mean [$α$/Fe] = +0.24$\pm$0.24, based on the ASPCAP pipeline results. A lack of heavy element spectral lines impedes further sub-classification of these CEMP stars, however, based on radial velocity scatter, we predict most are not CEMP-s stars which are typically found in binary systems. Only one object, 2M15312547+4220551, may be in a binary since it exhibits a sca…
We report the serendipitous discovery of a nitrogen-rich, mildly metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-1.08) giant star in a single-lined spectroscopic binary system found in the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) survey, Data Release 14 (DR14). Previous work has assumed that the two percent of halo giants with unusual elemental abundances have been evaporated from globular clusters, but other origins for their abundance signatures, including binary mass transfer, must also be explored. We present the results of an abundance re-analysis of the APOGEE-2 high-resolution near…
We present a spectroscopic study of eight extremely low-metallicity candidate emission-line galaxies with oxygen abundances possibly below 12 +log O/H = 7.35. These galaxies were selected from Data Release 10 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey/Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS/BOSS DR10). We will call these extremely metal-deficient galaxies XMD galaxies. The electron temperature-sensitive emission line [O~{\sc iii}] $λ$4363 is detected in three galaxies and marginally detected in two galaxies, allowing for abundance determination by a "direct" method. Because of large uncertainties i…
We search for dynamical substructures in the LAMOST DR3 very metal-poor (VMP) star catalog. After cross-matching with Gaia DR2, there are 3300 VMP stars with available high-quality astrometric information that have halo-like kinematics. We apply a method based on self-organizing maps to find groups clustered in the 4D space of orbital energy and angular momentum. We identify 57 dynamically tagged groups, which we label DTG-1 to DTG-57. Most of them belong to existing substructures in the nearby halo, such as the $Gaia$ Sausage or Sequoia. The stream identified by Helmi et al. is recovered, but…
Based on the first Gaia data release and spectroscopy from the LAMOST Data Release 4, we study the kinematics and chemistry of the local halo stars. The halo stars are identified kinematically with a relative speed of at least 220 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the local standard of rest. In total, 436 halo stars are identified. From this halo sample, 16 high velocity (HiVel) stars are identified. We studied the metallicity and [$α$/Fe] distribution of these HiVel stars. Though most of HiVel stars are metal-poor, there are several stars that have metallicity above $-0.5$ dex. To understand the or…
We have detected stellar halo streams in the solar neighborhood using data from the 7th public data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which includes the directed stellar program SEGUE: Sloan Extension For Galactic Understanding and Exploration. In order to derive distances to each star, we used the metallicity-dependent photometric parallax relation from Ivezic et al. (2008) for which we examine and quantify the accuracy. Our final sample consists of 22,321 nearby (d < 2 kpc), metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -0.5) main-sequence stars with 6D estimates of position and space velocity. We char…
The most metal-poor stars are the relics of the early chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Their chemical composition is an important tool to constrain the nucleosynthesis in the first generation of stars. The aim is to observe a sample of extremely metal-poor star (EMP stars) candidates selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 (SDSS DR12) and determine their chemical composition. We obtain medium resolution spectra of a sample of six stars using the X-Shooter spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and we used ATLAS models to compute the abundances. Five stars of the sam…
We report on the discovery of SPLUS J210428.01-004934.2, an ultra metal-poor (UMP) star first identified from the narrow-band photometry of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 1, in the SDSS Stripe 82 region. Follow-up medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy (with Gemini South and Magellan-Clay, respectively) confirmed the effectiveness of the search for low-metallicity stars using the S-PLUS narrow-band photometry. At [Fe/H]=-4.03, SPLUS J2104-0049 has the lowest detected carbon abundance, A(C)=+4.34, when compared to the 34 previously known UMP stars in the …
The Shapley Supercluster Survey is a multi-wavelength survey covering an area of ~23 deg^2 (~260 Mpc^2 at z=0.048) around the supercluster core, including nine Abell and two poor clusters, having redshifts in the range 0.045-0.050. The survey aims to investigate the role of the cluster-scale mass assembly on the evolution of galaxies, mapping the effects of the environment from the cores of the clusters to their outskirts and along the filaments. The optical (ugri) imaging acquired with OmegaCAM on the VLT Survey Telescope is essential to achieve the project goals providing accurate multi-band…
We present the first release of a large-scale study of relatively bright (V < 13.5) metal-poor stars observed with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), based on high-resolution spectra of 50 stars with a resolving power of R ~ 40,000 and S/N ~ 20 per pixel at 4300 Angstrom. The elemental abundances of C, Sr, Ba, and Eu are reported, as well as several alpha-elements (Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, V) and iron-peak elements (Mn, Co, Ni, Zn). We find a diverse array of abundance patterns, including several consistent with the signatures of carbon-enhanced metal-poor CEMP-i and CEMP-r stars. We find tha…
We identify a halo substructure in the Tycho Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) dataset, cross-matched with the RAVE-on data release. After quality cuts, the stars with large radial action ($J_R > 800$ kms$^{-1}$ kpc) are extracted. A subset of these stars is clustered in longitude and velocity and can be selected with further cuts. The 14 stars are centered on $(X,Y,Z) \approx (9.0,-1.0,-0.6)$ kpc and form a coherently moving structure in the halo with median $(v_R,v_ϕ,v_z) = (167.33,0.86,-94.85)$ kms$^{-1}$. They are all metal-poor giants with median [Fe/H] $=-0.83$. To guard against the effec…

We present a novel analysis of the metal-poor star sample in the complete Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release 5 catalog with the goal of identifying and characterizing all very metal-poor stars observed by the survey. Using a three-stage method, we first identified the candidate stars using only their spectra as input information. We employed an algorithm called t-SNE to construct a low-dimensional projection of the spectrum space and isolate the region containing metal-poor stars. Following this step, we measured the equivalent widths of the near-infrared CaII triplet lines with a …

We present the first data release (DR1) of the VST Early-type GAlaxy Survey (VEGAS). This is a deep multi-band (u'g'r'i') imaging survey, carried out with the ESO VLT Survey Telescope (VST). To date, using about 90% of the total observing time, VEGAS has already collected 43 targets (groups and clusters of galaxies) covering a total area on the sky of about 95 square degrees. Taking advantage of the wide (1 deg^2) field-of-view of OmegaCAM@VST, the long integration time and the wide variety of targets, VEGAS has proven to be a gold mine to explore the structure of galaxies down to the faintest…
The relative abundances of the Fe-peak elements (Ti-Zn) at the lowest metallicities are intimately linked to the physics of core-collapse supernova explosions. With a sample of 25 very metal-poor damped Lyman-alpha systems, we investigate the trends of the Fe-peak element ratios with metallicity. For nine of the 25 DLAs, a direct measurement (or useful upper limit) of one or more of the Ti,Cr,Co,Ni,Zn/Fe abundance ratios could be determined from detected absorption lines. For the remaining systems (without detections), we devised a new form of spectral stacking to estimate the typical Fe-peak …

We present and discuss the results of a search for extremely metal-poor stars based on photometry from data release DR1.1 of the SkyMapper imaging survey of the southern sky. In particular, we outline our photometric selection procedures and describe the low-resolution ($R$ $\approx$ 3000) spectroscopic follow-up observations that are used to provide estimates of effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity ([Fe/H]) for the candidates. The selection process is very efficient: of the 2618 candidates with low-resolution spectra that have photometric metallicity estimates less than or e…
We evaluate the rotational velocity of stars observed by the Pristine survey towards the Galactic anticentre, spanning a wide range of metallicities from the extremely metal-poor regime ($\mathrm{[Fe/H]}<-3$) to nearly solar metallicity. In the Galactic anticentre direction, the rotational velocity ($V_ϕ$) is similar to the tangential velocity in the galactic longitude direction ($V_{\ell}$). This allows us to estimate $V_ϕ$ from Gaia early data-release 3 (Gaia EDR3) proper motions for stars without radial velocity measurements. This substantially increases the sample of stars in the outer dis…
Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the first fundamental step in the calibration of the cosmological distance ladder. Furthermore, they represent powerful tracers in the context of Galactic studies. We have collected high-resolution spectroscopy with UVES@VLT for a sample of 65 DCEPs. The majority of them are the faintest DCEPs ever observed in the Milky Way. For each target, we derived accurate atmospheric parameters, radial velocities, and abundances for 24 different species. The resulting iron abundances range between +0.3 and $-$1.1 dex with the bulk of stars at [Fe/H]$\sim-0.5$ dex. Our sampl…
