Graphene on $L1_0$-FePd(001), which has been experimentally studied in recent years, is a heterogeneous interface with a significant lattice symmetry mismatch between the honeycomb structure of graphene and tetragonal alloy surface. In this work, we report on the density functional study of its atomic-scale configurations, electronic and magnetic properties, and adsorption mechanism, which have not been well understood in previous experimental studies. We propose various atomic-scale models, including simple nontwisted and low-strain twisted interfaces, and analyze their energetical stability by performing structural optimizations using the van der Waals interactions of both DFT-D2 and optB86b-vdW functionals. The binding energy of the most stable structure reached $E_\mathrm{B}=-0.22$~eV/atom for DFT-D2 ($E_\mathrm{B}=-0.19$~eV/atom for optB86b-vdW). The calculated FePd-graphene spacing distance was approximately 2~Å, which successfully reproduced the experimental value. We also find out characteristic behaviors: the modulation of $π$-bands, the suppression of the site-dependence of adsorption energy, and the rise of \color{blue} moiré-like \color{black} corrugated buckling. In addition, our atomic structure is expected to help build low-cost computational models for investigating the physical properties of $L1_0$ alloys/two-dimensional interfaces.

We have studied the phonon specific heat in single-layer, bilayer and twisted bilayer graphene. The calculations were performed using the Born-von Karman model of lattice dynamics for intralayer atomic interactions and spherically symmetric interatomic potential for interlayer interactions. We found that at temperature T<15 K, specific heat varies with temperature as T^n, where n = 1 for graphene, n = 1.6 for bilayer graphene and n = 1.3 for the twisted bilayer graphene. The phonon specific heat reveals an intriguing dependence on the twist angle in bilayer graphene, which is particularly pron…
We consider the electronic structure of a slightly twisted graphene bilayer and show the coexistence of van Hove singularities (VHSs) and superlattice Dirac points in a continuum approximation. The graphene-on-graphene moiré pattern gives rise to a periodic electronic potential, which leads to the emergence of the superlattice Dirac points due to the chiral nature of the charge carriers. Owning to the distinguishing real and reciprocal structures, the sublattice exchange even and odd structures of the twisted graphene bilayer (the two types of commensurate structures) result in two different s…
Electronic structures and their Landau quantizations in twisted graphene bilayer and trilayer are investigated using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. In the twisted trilayer, the top graphene layer and second layer are AB (Bernal) stacking and there is a stacking misorientation between the second layer and third layer. Both the twisted bilayer and trilayer exhibit two pronounced low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) in their spectra. Below the VHSs, the observed Landau level quantization in the twisted bilayer is identical to that of massless Dirac fermion in graphene monola…
The perfect transmission in graphene monolayer and the perfect reflection in Bernal graphene bilayer for electrons incident in the normal direction of a potential barrier are viewed as two incarnations of the Klein paradox. Here we show a new and unique incarnation of the Klein paradox. Owing to the different chiralities of the quasiparticles involved, the chiral fermions in twisted graphene bilayer shows adjustable probability of chiral tunnelling for normal incidence: they can be changed from perfect tunnelling to partial/perfect reflection, or vice versa, by controlling either the height of…
The interlayer coupling of twisted bilayer graphene could markedly affect its electronic band structure. A current challenge required to overcome in experiment is how to precisely control the coupling and therefore tune the electronic properties of the bilayer graphene. Here, we describe a facile method to modulate the local interlayer coupling by adsorption of single molecule magnets onto the twisted bilayer graphene and report the characterization of its electronic band structure using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The low-energy Van Hove singularities (VHSs) and superlatti…
Coherent motion of the electrons in the Bloch states is one of the fundamental concepts of the charge conduction in solid state physics. In layered materials, however, such a condition often breaks down for the interlayer conduction, when the interlayer coupling is significantly reduced by e.g. large interlayer separation. We report that complete suppression of coherent conduction is realized even in an atomic length scale of layer separation in twisted bilayer graphene. The interlayer resistivity of twisted bilayer graphene is much higher than the c-axis resistivity of Bernal-stacked graphite…
We theoretically investigated phonon dispersion in AA-stacked, AB-stacked and twisted bilayer graphene with various rotation angles. The calculations were performed using the Born-von-Karman model for the intra-layer atomic interactions and the Lennard-Jones potential for the inter-layer interactions. It was found that the stacking order affects the out-of-plane acoustic phonon modes the most. The difference in the phonon densities of states in the twisted bilayer graphene and in AA- or AB-stacked bilayer graphene appears in the phonon frequencies range 90 - 110 1/cm. Twisting bilayer graphene…
The generalized tight-binding model is developed to investigate the magneto-electronic properties in twisted bilayer graphene system. All the interlayer and intralayer atomic interactions are included in the Moire superlattice. The twisted bilayer graphene system is a zero-gap semiconductor with double-degenerate Dirac-cone structures, and saddle-point energy dispersions appearing at low energies for cases of small twisting angles. There exist rich and unique magnetic quantization phenomena, in which many Landau-level subgroups are induced due to specific Moire zone folding through modulating …
Atomic defects have a significant impact in the low-energy properties of graphene systems. By means of first-principles calculations and tight-binding models we provide evidence that chemical impurities modify both the normal and the superconducting states of twisted bilayer graphene. A single hydrogen atom attached to the bilayer surface yields a triple-point crossing, whereas self-doping and three-fold symmetry-breaking are created by a vacant site. Both types of defects lead to time-reversal symmetry-breaking and the creation of local magnetic moments. Hydrogen-induced magnetism is found to…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), in which two monolayer graphene are stacked with an in-plane rotation angle, has recently become a hot topic due to unique electronic structures. TBG is normally produced in air by the tear-and-stack method of mechanical exfoliation and transferring graphene flakes, by which a sizable, millimeter-order area, and importantly clean interface between layers are hard to obtain. In this study, we resolved these problems by directly transferring the easy-to-exfoliate CVD-grown graphene on SiC substrate to graphene in a high vacuum without using any transfer assisting …

The geometrical, electronic, and magnetic properties of twisted zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) and novel graphene Möbius strips (GMS) are systematically investigated using first-principles density functional calculations. The structures of ZGNRs and GMS are optimized, and their stabilities are examined. The molecular energy levels and the spin polarized density of states are calculated. It is found that for twisted ZGNRs, the atomic bonding energy decreases quadratically with the increase of the twisted angle, and the HOMO-LUMO gap are varying in a sine-like behavior with the twiste…
Here we show that twisted graphene trilayer made by misoriented stacking a graphene monolayer on top of a Bernal graphene bilayer can exhibit rich and tailored electronic properties. For the case that the graphene monolayer and bilayer are strongly coupled, both the massless Dirac fermions and massive chiral fermions coexist in the twisted trilayer, leading to unique in-plane chiral tunneling. For a weak coupling between the two graphene systems, the distinct chiralities and pseudospin textures of quasiparticles in monolayer and bilayer enable vertical valley-polarized quantum tunneling betwee…
Recent studies show that two low-energy Van Hove singularities (VHSs) seen as two pronounced peaks in the density of states (DOS) could be induced in twisted graphene bilayer. Here, we report angle dependent VHSs of slightly twisted graphene bilayer studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We show that energy difference of the two VHSs follows \DeltaEvhs ~ \hbarνF\DeltaK between 1.0^{\circ} and 3.0^{\circ} (here νF ~ 1.1\times106 m/s is the Fermi velocity of monolayer graphene, \DeltaK = 2Ksin(θ/2) is the shift between the corresponding Dirac points of the twisted graphene bi…
We present electronic structure calculations of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG): A tetralayer graphene structure composed of two AB-stacked graphene bilayers with a relative rotation angle between them. Using first-principles calculations, we find that TDBG is semiconducting with a band gap that depends on the twist angle, that can be tuned by an external electric field. The gap is consistent with TDBG symmetry and its magnitude is related to surface effects, driving electron transfer from outer to inner layers. The surface effect competes with an energy upshift of localized states at i…
Based on ab initio calculations, we study the effect of intercalating twisted bilayer graphene with carbon. Surprisingly, we find that the intercalant pulls the atoms in the two layers closer together locally when placed in certain regions in between the layers, and the process is energetically favorable as well. This arises because in these regions of the supercell, the local environment allows the intercalant to form tetrahedral bonding with nearest atoms in the layers. Intercalating AB- or AA-bilayer graphene with carbon does not produce this effect; therefore, the nontrivial effect owes it…
In this paper, the electronic properties of 30° twisted double bilayer graphene, which loses the translational symmetry due to the incommensurate twist angle, are studied by means of the tight-binding approximation. We demonstrate the interlayer decoupling in the low-energy region from various electronic properties, such as the density of states, effective band structure, optical conductivity and Landau level spectrum. However, at Q points, the interlayer coupling results in the appearance of new Van Hove singularities in the density of states, new peaks in the optical conductivity and importa…
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images are obtained for the first time on few layer and twisted multilayer epitaxial graphene states synthesized on n+ 6H-SiC a-plane non-polar surface. The twisted graphene is determined to have a rotation angle of 5.4° between the top two layers, by comparing moiré patterns from stick and ball models of bilayer graphene to experimentally obtained images. Furthermore, the experimental moiré pattern shows dynamic behavior, continuously shuffling between two stable surface arrangements one bond length apart. The moiré pattern shifts by more than 1 nm, making …
The methods for realizing of non-Abelian gauge potentials have been proposed in many different systems in condensed matter1-5. The simplest realization among them may be in a graphene bilayer obtained by slightly relative rotation between the two layers4. Here we report the experimental evidence for non-Abelian gauge potentials in twisted graphene bilayers by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. At a magic twisted angle, theta ~ (1.11+/-0.05)deg, a pronounced sharp peak, which arises from the nondispersive flat bands at the charge neutrality point, are observed in the tunnelling de…
A moire pattern is formed when two copies of a periodic pattern are overlaid with a relative twist. We address the electronic structure of a twisted two-layer graphene system, showing that in its continuum Dirac model the moire pattern periodicity leads to moire Bloch bands. The two layers become more strongly coupled and the Dirac velocity crosses zero several times as the twist angle is reduced. For a discrete set of magic angles the velocity vanishes, the lowest moire band flattens, and the Dirac-point density-of-states and the counterflow conductivity are strongly enhanced.
The creation of van der Waals heterostructures based on a graphene monolayer and other two-dimensional crystals has attracted great interest because atomic registry of the two-dimensional crystals can modify the electronic spectra and properties of graphene. Twisted graphene bilayer can be viewed as a special van der Waals structure composed of two mutual misoriented graphene layers, where the sublayer graphene not only plays the role of a substrate, but also acts as an equivalent role as the top graphene layer in the structure. Here we report the electronic spectra of slightly twisted graphen…
We investigate the effects of lithium intercalation in twisted bilayers of graphene, using first-principles electronic structure calculations. To model this system we employ commensurate supercells that correspond to twist angles of 7.34$^\circ$ and 2.45$^\circ$. From the energetics of lithium absorption we demonstrate that for low Li concentration the intercalants cluster in the AA regions with double the density of a uniform distribution. The charge donated by the Li atoms to the graphene layers results in modifications to the band structure that can be qualitatively captured using a continu…
The electronic band structure of twisted bilayer graphene develops van Hove singularities whose energy depends on the twist angle between the two layers. Using Raman spectroscopy, we monitor the evolution of the electronic band structure upon doping using the G peak area which is enhanced when the laser photon energy is resonant with the energy separation of the van Hove singularities. Upon charge doping, the Raman G peak area initially increases for twist angles larger than a critical angle and decreases for smaller angles. To explain this behavior with twist angle, the energy of separation o…
Here we study the evolution of local electronic properties of a twisted graphene bilayer induced by a strain and a high curvature. The strain and curvature strongly affect the local band structures of the twisted graphene bilayer; the energy difference of the two low-energy van Hove singularities decreases with increasing the lattice deformations and the states condensed into well-defined pseudo-Landau levels, which mimic the quantization of massive Dirac fermions in a magnetic field of about 100 T, along a graphene wrinkle. The joint effect of strain and out-of-plane distortion in the graphen…
An interlayer distance modulation in twisted bilayer graphene is reported. This is achieved by an in-situ annealing technique. The transformation of systematic vacuum and hydrogen annealing effects in twisted bilayer CVD graphene on SiO2 surface is reported based on experimental results. Incoherent interlayer conduction is observed in the twisted bilayer device. In-situ annealing efficiently removes the residues in the graphene-to-graphene interface and enhances the interlayer conduction. We demonstrate graphene-to-graphene interlayer resistance modulated by an order of magnetite at 5 K. We al…
We examine the quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene grown on Cu substrates by chemical vapor deposition. Spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy suggests a mixture of Bernal (A-B) stacked and rotationally faulted (twisted) domains. Magnetotransport measurements performed on bilayer domains with a wide 2D band reveal quantum Hall states (QHSs) at filling factors $ν=4, 8, 12$ consistent with a Bernal stacked bilayer, while magnetotransport measurements in bilayer domains defined by a narrow 2D band show a superposition of QHSs of two independent monolayers. The analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas…
In two-dimensional (2D) twisted bilayers, the van der Waals (vdW) interlayer interaction introduces atomic-scale reconstruction at interface by locally rotating lattice to form strain-field vortex networks in their moiré superlattice. However, direct imaging the tiny local lattice rotation of the strain-field vortex requires extremely high spatial resolution and is an outstanding challenge in experiment. Here, a topmost small-period graphene moiré pattern is introduced to magnify sub-Angstrom distortions of the lattice and tiny local lattice rotation in underlying twisted bilayer graphene (TBG…
We study the Landau quantization of the electronic spectrum for graphene bilayers that are rotationally faulted to produce periodic superlattices. Commensurate twisted bilayers exist in two families distinguished by their sublattice exchange parity. We show that these two families exhibit distinct Landau quantized spectra distinguished both by the interlayer coupling of their zero modes and by an amplitude modulation of their spectra at energies above their low energy interlayer coherence scales. These modulations can provide a powerful experimental probe of the magnitude of a weak coherence s…
Currently there is a lively discussion concerning Fermi velocity renormalization in twisted bilayers and several contradicted experimental results are reported. Here we study electronic structures of the twisted bilayers by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The interlayer coupling strengths between the adjacent bilayers are measured according to energy separations of two pronounced low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the STS spectra. We demonstrate that there is a large range of values for the interlayer interaction in different twisted bilayers. Below the VHS…
Twist, as a simple and unique degree of freedom, could lead to enormous novel quantum phenomena in bilayer graphene. A small rotation angle introduces low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) approaching the Fermi level, which result in unusual correlated states in the bilayer graphene. It is reasonable to expect that the twist could also affect the electronic properties of few-layer graphene dramatically. However, such an issue has remained experimentally elusive. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically studied a twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) w…
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to resolve the spatial variation of the density of states of twisted graphene layers on top of a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrate. Owing to the twist a moire pattern develops with a periodicity that is substantially larger than the periodicity of a single layer graphene. The twisted graphene layer has electronic properties that are distinctly different from that of a single layer graphene due to the nonzero interlayer coupling. For small twist angles (about 1-3.5 degree) the integrated differential conductivity spectrum ex…
Moiré superlattices in graphene supported on various substrates have opened a new avenue to engineer graphene's electronic properties. Yet, the exact crystallographic structure on which their band structure depends remains highly debated. In this scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory study, we have analysed graphene samples grown on multilayer graphene prepared onto SiC and on the close-packed surfaces of Re and Ir with ultra-high precision. We resolve small-angle twists and shears in graphene, and identify large unit cells comprising more than 1,000 carbon atoms and exhi…
The electronic properties of bilayer graphene strongly depend on relative orientation of the two atomic lattices. Whereas Bernal-stacked graphene is most commonly studied, a rotational mismatch between layers opens up a whole new field of rich physics, especially at small interlayer twist. Here we report on magnetotransport measurements on twisted graphene bilayers, prepared by folding of single layers. These reveal a strong dependence on the twist angle, which can be estimated by means of sample geometry. At small rotation, superlattices with a wavelength in the order of 10 nm arise and are o…
We investigated theoretically the specific heat of graphene, bilayer graphene and twisted bilayer graphene taking into account the exact phonon dispersion and density of states for each polarization branch. It is shown that contrary to a conventional believe the dispersion of the out-of-plane acoustic phonons - referred to as ZA phonons - deviates strongly from a parabolic law starting from the frequencies as low as ~100 1/cm. This leads to the frequency-dependent ZA phonon density of states and the breakdown of the linear dependence of the specific heat on temperature T. We established that Z…
We have performed an \it {ab initio} investigation of transition metals (TMs = Mo, Ru, Co, and Pt) embedded in twisted bilayer graphene (tBG) layers. Our total energy results reveal that, triggered by the misalignment between the graphene layers, Mo and Ru atoms may form a quasi-periodic (triangular) array of intercalated atoms. In contrast, the formation of those structures is not expected for the other TMs, Co and Pt atoms. The net magnetic moment (m) of Mo and Ru atoms may be quenched upon intercalation, depending on the stacking region (AA or AB). For instance, we find a magnetic moment of…
We derive a general relation between the stacking vector ${\bf u}$ describing the relative shift of two layers of bilayer graphene and the Chern index. We find $C = ν- \text{sign}\left(|V_{AB}|-|V_{BA}|\right)$, where $ν$ is a valley index and $|V_{αβ}|$ the absolute value of stacking potentials that depend on ${\bf u}$ and that uniquely determine the interlayer interaction; AA stacking plays no role in the topological character. With this expression we show that while ideal and relaxed minimally twisted bilayer graphene appear so distinct as to be almost different materials, their Chern index…
We report a systematic study of the optical conductivity of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) across a large energy range (1.2 eV to 5.6 eV) for various twist angles, combined with first-principles calculations. At previously unexplored high energies, our data show signatures of multiple van Hove singularities (vHSs) in the tBLG bands, as well as the nonlinearity of the single layer graphene bands and their electron-hole asymmetry. Our data also suggest that excitonic effects play a vital role in the optical spectra of tBLG. Including electron-hole interactions in first-principles calculations i…
The newly realized twisted graphene systems such as twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG), and twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) have attracted widespread theoretical attention. Therefore, a simple and accurate model of the systems is of vital importance for the further study. Here, we construct the symmetry-adapted localized Wannier functions and the corresponding $\textit{ab initio}$ minimal two-valley four-band effective tight-binding models for generic twisted graphene systems with small twist angle. Such two-valley model evades the Wannier obstruction caused…
We report scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) of twisted graphene bilayer on SiC substrate. For twist angle ~ 4.5o the Dirac point ED is located about 0.40 eV below the Fermi level EF due to the electron doping at the graphene/SiC interface. We observed an unexpected result that the local Dirac point around a nanoscaled defect shifts towards the Fermi energy during the STS measurements (with a time scale about 100 seconds). This behavior was attributed to the decoupling between the twisted graphene and the substrate during the measurements, which lowers the carrier densi…
We predict twisted double bilayer graphene to be a versatile platform for the realization of fractional Chern insulators readily targeted by tuning the gate potential and the twist angle. Remarkably, these topologically ordered states of matter, including spin singlet Halperin states and spin polarized states in Chern number $\mathcal C=1$ and $\mathcal{C}= 2$ bands, occur at high temperatures and without the need for an external magnetic field.
By using the first-principles method based on density of functional theory, we study the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene with some specific twist angles and interlayer spacings. With the decrease of the twist angle(the unit cell becomes larger), the energy band becomes narrower and Coulomb repulsion increases, leading to the enhancement of electronic correlation; On the other hand, as the interlayer spacing decreases and the interlayer coupling becomes stronger, the correlation becomes stronger. By tuning the interlayer coupling, we can realize the strongly correlated state w…
Graphene, a one-layer honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms, exhibits unconventional phenomena and attracts much interest since its discovery. Recently, an unexpected Mott-like insulator state induced by moiré pattern and a superconducting state are observed in magic-angle-twisted bilayer graphene, especially, without correlations between electrons, which gives more hints for the understanding and investigation of strongly correlated phenomena. The photon as boson, behaving differently with fermion, can also retrieve the unconventional phenomena of graphene, such as the bearded edge state which is…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures with flat electronic bands have recently emerged as a platform for realizing correlated and topological states with an extraordinary degree of control and tunability. In graphene-based moiré heterostructures, the correlated phase diagram and band topology depend strongly on the number of graphene layers, their relative stacking arrangement, and details of the external environment from the encapsulating crystals. Here, we report that the system of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) hosts a variety of correlated metallic and insulating states, as wel…

We have studied the dielectric screening of electric field which is induced by a gate voltage in twisted double bilayer graphene by using a sample with a mismatch angle of about 5 degrees. In low temperature magnetotransport measurements, quantum oscillations of magnetoresistance originating from two bands with different carrier density were observed. The behavior of the carrier densities with respect to the total carrier density were distinct from that of the AB-stacked tetralayer graphene. The carrier density ratio was theoretically analyzed in terms of the model that the induced charge deca…
Tailoring the interlayer twist angle of bilayer graphene (BLG) has a significant influence on its electronic properties, including superconductivity, topological transitions, ferromagnetic states and correlated insulating states. These exotic electronic properties are sensitively dependent on the work functions of bilayer graphene samples. Here, the twisted angle-dependent work functions of CVD-grown twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) are detailed investigated by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) in combination with Raman spectra. The thickness-dependent surface potentials of Bernal-stacked mu…
Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) is two graphene layers placed on top of each other with a twist angle, making it has tunable thermal properties. In this paper, we report an analysis of thermal conductivity ($κ$), phonon density of states, and specific heat capacity of tBLG with various twist angles over a range of temperatures using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations based on the Green-Kubo method. Simulation shows that stacking and twisting graphene layers lead to a decrease in the thermal conductivity, with the highest $κ$ at around room temperature owned by the tBLG with a twist ang…
We investigate twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG), a four-layer system composed of two AB-stacked graphene bilayers rotated with respect to each other by a small angle. Our ab initio band structure calculations reveal a considerable energy gap at the charge point neutrality that we assign to the intrinsic symmetric polarization (ISP). We then introduce the ISP effect into the tight-binding parameterization and perform calculations on TDBG models that include lattice relaxation effects down to very small twist angles. We identify a narrow region around the magic angle $θ^\circ = 1.3^{\circ}…
The folding of monolayer graphene leads to new layered systems, termed twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), generally displaying a certain interlayer rotation away from crystallographic alignment. We here present an atomic force microscopy study on folded graphene, revealing unexpectedly large twist angle dependent modulations of ~3 angstrom in interlayer distance. At the TBG surface, we find enhanced friction attributable to superlubricity in between incommensurate layers. At the bended edge, the radius of curvature scales with the folded length, congruent to earlier studies on carbon nanotubes.
We propose a generalized Peierls substitution method in conjunction with the tight-binding model to explore the magnetic quantization and quantum Hall effect in twisted multilayer graphene under a magnetic field. The Bloch-basis tight-binding Hamiltonian is constructed for large twist angle while a simplified tight-binding model is employed for the magic angle. We investigate extensively the band structures, Landau levels (LLs), and quantum Hall conductivity (QHC) of twisted bilayer graphene and twisted double bilayer graphene, as well as their dependence on the twist angle. Comparison between…
Starting with twisted bilayer graphene, graphene-based moiré materials have recently been established as a new platform for studying strong electron correlations. In this paper, we study twisted graphene monolayers on trilayer graphene and demonstrate that this system can host flat bands when the twist angle is close to the magic-angle of 1.16$^\circ$. When monolayer graphene is twisted on ABA trilayer graphene, the flat bands are not isolated, but are intersected by a Dirac cone with a large Fermi velocity. In contrast, graphene twisted on ABC trilayer graphene (denoted AtABC) exhibits a gap …
We report on the energy spectrum of electrons in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) obtained by the band-unfolding method in the tight-binding model. We find the band-gap opening at particular points in the reciprocal space, that elucidates the drastic reduction of the Fermi-level velocity with the tiny twisted angles in tBLGs. We find that Moirè pattern caused by the twist of the two graphene layers generates interactions among Dirac cones, otherwise absent, and the resultant cone-cone interactions peculiar to each point in the reciprocal space causes the energy gap and thus reduced the Fermi-le…
Evidence of flat-band magnetism and half-metallicity in compressed twisted bilayer graphene is provided with first-principles calculations. We show that dynamic band-structure engineering in twisted bilayer graphene is possible by controlling the chemical composition with extrinsic doping, the interlayer coupling strength with pressure, and the magnetic ordering with external electric field. By varying the rotational order and reducing the interlayer separation an unbalanced distribution of charge density resulting in the spontaneous apparition of localized magnetic moments without disrupting …
The stacking faults (deviates from Bernal) will break the translational symmetry of multilayer graphenes and modify their electronic and optical behaviors to the extent depending on the interlayer coupling strength. This paper addresses the stacking-induced band splitting and folding effect on the electronic band structure of twisted bilayer graphene. Based on the first-principles density functional theory study, we predict that the band folding effect of graphene layers may enable the G band Raman double resonance in the visible excitation range. Such prediction is confirmed experimentally wi…
We study the localization properties of electrons in incommensurate twisted bilayer graphene for small angles, encompassing the narrow-band regime, by numerically exact means. Sub-ballistic states are found within the narrow-band region around the magic angle. Such states are delocalized in momentum-space and follow non-Poissonian level statistics, in contrast with their ballistic counterparts found for close commensurate angles. Transport results corroborate this picture: for large enough systems, the conductance decreases with system size for incommensurate angles within the sub-ballistic re…
Twisted trilayer graphene is a particularly promising moiré superlattice system, due to its tunability, strong superconductivity, and complex electronic symmetry breaking. Motivated by these properties, we study lattice relaxation and the long-wavelength phonon modes of this system. We show that mirror-symmetric trilayer graphene hosts, aside from the conventional acoustic phonon modes, two classes of shear modes, which are even and odd under mirror reflection. The mirror-even modes are found to be gapless and equivalent to the "phason" modes of twisted bilayer graphene, with appropriately res…
