Given $a,b\in\mathbb{R}$ and $Φ\in C^1(\mathbb{S}^2)$, we study immersed oriented surfaces $Σ$ in the Euclidean 3-space $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose mean curvature $H$ and Gauss curvature $K$ satisfy $2aH+bK=Φ(N)$, where $N:Σ\rightarrow\mathbb{S}^2$ is the Gauss map. This theory widely generalize some of paramount importance such as the ones constant mean and Gauss curvature surfaces, linear Weingarten surfaces and self-translating solitons of the mean curvature flow. Under mild assumptions on the prescribed function $Φ$, we exhibit a classification result for rotational surfaces in the case that the underlying fully nonlinear PDE that governs these surfaces is elliptic or hyperbolic.
In this paper, we consider a class of prescribed Weingarten curvature equations. Under some sufficient condition, we obtain an existence result by the standard degree theory based on the a prior estimates for the solutions to the prescribed Weingarten curvature equations.
In this paper, under suitable settings, we can obtain the existence of solutions to a class of prescribed Weingarten curvature equations in warped product manifolds of special type by the standard degree theory based on the a priori estimates for the solutions. This is to say that the existence of closed hypersurface (which is graphic with respect to the base manifold and whose $k$-th Weingarten curvature satisfies some constraint) in a given warped product manifold of special type can be assured.
In this article, we shall derive by elementary calculations the Gauss map, spherical image, Weingarten map and the curvatures at identity of the special linear group, that is, the matrices of determinant 1. We could not find any reference where this simple, nice computation has been explicitly put down.
In this paper, we study the timelike tubular Weingarten surfaces in 3-dimensional Minkowski space $IR_1^3 $.We have obtained some conditions for being $({K_{II},H})$, $({K_{II},K})$, timelike tubular Weingarten surfaces where are the second Gaussian curvature the Gaussian curvature and the mean curvature, respectively.
In this paper, we study the rotational surfaces in the isotropic 3-space I^3. satisfying Weingarten conditions in terms of the relative curvature K (analogue of the Gaussian curvature) and the isotropic mean curvature H. In particular, we classify such surfaces of linear Weingarten type in I^3.
We prove curvature estimates for general curvature functions. As an application we show the existence of closed, strictly convex hypersurfaces with prescribed curvature $F$, where the defining cone of $F$ is $\C_+$. $F$ is only assumed to be monotone, symmetric, homogeneous of degree 1, concave and of class $C^{m,\al}$, $m\ge4$.
We prove that any strongly regular Weingarten surface in Euclidean space carries locally geometric principal parameters. The basic theorem states that any strongly regular Weingarten surface is determined up to a motion by its structural functions and the normal curvature function satisfying a geometric differential equation. We apply these results to the special Weingarten surfaces: minimal surfaces, surfaces of constant mean curvature and surfaces of constant Gauss curvature.
In this paper, we prove the existence of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space with prescribed boundary and whose k-th Weingarten curvature equals a given function that depends on the normal of the hypersurface. The proof is based on the solvability of a fully nonlinear elliptic PDE. The required a priori estimates are established under the natural assumptions that the prescribed boundary is strictly convex and the prescribed function satisfies a Serrin type condition.
In this work, we study spacelike surfaces in Minkowski space $E_1^3$ foliated by pieces of circles and that satisfy a linear Weingarten condition of type $a H+b K=c$, where $a,b$ and $c$ are constant and $H$ and $K$ denote the mean curvature and the Gauss curvature respectively. We show that such surfaces must be surfaces of revolution or surfaces with constant mean curvature H=0 or surfaces with constant Gauss curvature K=0.
A surface in hyperbolic space $\h^3$ invariant by a group of parabolic isometries is called a parabolic surface. In this paper we investigate parabolic surfaces of $\h^3$ that satisfy a linear Weingarten relation of the form $aκ_1+bκ_2=c$ or $aH+bK=c$, where $a,b,c\in \r$ and, as usual, $κ_i$ are the principal curvatures, $H$ is the mean curvature and $K$ is de Gaussian curvature. We classify all parabolic linear Weingarten surfaces in hyperbolic space.
We prove that the natural principal parameters on a given Weingarten surface are also natural principal parameters for the parallel surfaces of the given one. As a consequence of this result we obtain that the natural PDE of any Weingarten surface is the natural PDE of its parallel surfaces. We show that the linear fractional Weingarten surfaces are exactly the surfaces satisfying a linear relation between their three curvatures. Our main result is classification of the natural PDE's of Weingarten surfaces with linear relation between their curvatures.
In this paper we study surfaces in Euclidean 3-space foliated by pieces of circles and that satisfy a Weingarten condition of type $a H+b K=c$, where $a,b$ and $c$ are constant and $H$ and $K$ denote the mean curvature and the Gauss curvature respectively. We prove that a such surface must be a surface of revolution, a Riemann minimal surface or a generalized cone.
We establish what semi-discrete linear Weingarten surfaces with Weierstrass-type representations in $3$-dimensional Riemannian and Lorentzian spaceforms are, confirming their required properties regarding curvatures and parallel surfaces, and then classify them. We then define and analyze their singularities. In particular, we discuss singularities of (1) semi-discrete surfaces with non-zero constant Gaussian curvature, (2) parallel surfaces of semi-discrete minimal and maximal surfaces, and (3) semi-discrete constant mean curvature $1$ surfaces in de Sitter $3$-space. We include comparisons w…
In this article we fully classify regular tubular surfaces in Euclidean, Lorentzian and hyperbolic 3-spaces whose Gaussian and mean curvatures $K$ and $H$ verify a polynomial relation. More precisely, we determine the set $S(Q)$ of all regular tubular surfaces whose curvatures verify a given polynomial relation $Q(K,H)=0$, and the set $Q(S)$ of all polynomial relations vanished by the curvatures of a given tubular surface $S$.
In this paper we define and analyze singularities of discrete linear Weingarten surfaces with Weierstrass-type representations in $3$-dimensional Riemannian and Lorentzian spaceforms. In particular, we discuss singularities of discrete surfaces with non-zero constant Gaussian curvature, and parallel surfaces of discrete minimal and maximal surfaces, and discrete constant mean curvature $1$ surfaces in de Sitter $3$-space, including comparisons with different previously known definitions of such singularities.
In this paper we finish the classification of rotational special Weingarten surfaces in S^2 x R and H^2 x R; i.e. rotational surfaces in S^2 x R and H^2 x R whose mean curvature h and extrinsic curvature K_e satisfy h=f(h^2-K_e), for some function f in C^1([0,+infty)) such that 4x(f'(x))^2<1 for any x>=0.
We prove the existence of a complete locally Lipschitz continuous hypersurface in weak sense with prescribed Weingarten curvature and asymptotic boundary at infinity in hyperbolic space under certain assumptions.
Weingarten surfaces are those whose principal curvatures satisfy a functional relation, whose set of solutions is called the curvature diagram or the W-diagram of the surface. Making use of the notion of geometric linear momentum of a plane curve, we propose a new approach to the study of rotational Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean 3-space. Our contribution consists of reducing any type of Weingarten condition on a rotational surface to a first order differential equation on the momentum of the generatrix curve. In this line, we provide two new classification results involving a cubic and an h…
We demonstrate that every non-tubular channel linear Weingarten surface in Euclidean space is a surface of revolution, hence parallel to a catenoid or a rotational surface of non-zero constant Gauss curvature. We provide explicit parametrizations and deduce existence of complete hyperbolic linear Weingarten surfaces.
We give a relatively simple proof that a translation surface in Euclidean space that satisfies a relation of type $aH+bK=c$, for some real numbers $a,b,c$, where $H$ and $K$ are the mean curvature and the Gauss curvature of the surface, respectively, must have $a=0$ or $b=0$, and thus, $K$ is constant or $H$ is constant. Our method of proof extends to the Lorentzian ambient space.
In this article, we study spacelike and timelike rotational surfaces in a 3--dimensional de Sitter space $\mathbb{S}^3_1$ which are the orbit of a regular curve under the action of the orthogonal transformation of 4--dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ leaving a spacelike, a timelike or a degenerate plane pointwise fixed. We determine the profile curve of such Weingarten rotational surfaces parameterized by the principal curvature. Then, we classify spacelike and timelike Weingarten rotational surface in $\mathbb{S}^3_1$ with the principal curvatures $κ$ and $λ$ satisfying $κ=aλ+b$ or…
In this work we study surfaces in radial conformally flat spaces. We characterize surfaces of rotation with constant Gaussian and Extrinsic curvature in these radial 3-spaces. We prove that all the spheres in the conformal 3-space have constant Gaussian curvature $K=1$ if, and only if, the conformal factor is special. In this special case we study geometric properties of this ambient 3-space, and as an application we prove that it is isometric to the space ${\mathbb{S}}^2\times {\mathbb{R}}$, so we consider it as the {\em Radial Model} of ${\mathbb{S}}^2\times {\mathbb{R}}$. We obtain two clas…
We study time-like surfaces in the three-dimensional Minkowski space with diagonalizable second fundamental form. On any time-like W-surface we introduce locally natural principal parameters and prove that such a surface is determined uniquely (up to motion) by a special invariant function, which satisfies a natural non-linear partial differential equation. This result can be interpreted as a solution of the Lund-Regge reduction problem for time-like W-surfaces with real principal curvatures in Minkowski space. We apply this theory to linear fractional time-like W-surfaces and obtain the natur…
We show that compact embedded starshaped $r$-convex hypersurfaces of certain warped products satisfying $H_r=aH+b$ with $a\geqslant 0$, $b>0$, where $H$ and $H_r$ are respectively the mean curvature and $r$-th mean curvature is a slice. In the case of space forms, we show that without the assumption of starshapedness, such Weingarten hypersurfaces are geodesic spheres. Finally, we prove that, in the case of space forms, if $Hr-aH-b$ is close to $0$ then the hypersurface is close to geodesic sphere for the Hausdorff distance. We also prove an anisotropic version of this stability result in the …
Discrete linear Weingarten surfaces in space forms are characterized as special discrete $Ω$-nets, a discrete analogue of Demoulin's $Ω$-surfaces. It is shown that the Lie-geometric deformation of $Ω$-nets descends to a Lawson transformation for discrete linear Weingarten surfaces, which coincides with the well-known Lawson correspondence in the constant mean curvature case.
The aim of this paper is to present a complete description of all rotational linear Weingarten surface into the Euclidean sphere S3. These surfaces are characterized by a linear relation aH+bK=c, where H and K stand for their mean and Gaussian curvatures, respectively, whereas a; b and c are real constants.
In this article, we study complete surfaces $Σ$, isometrically immersed in the product space $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ having positive extrinsic curvature $K_e$. Let $K_i$ denote the intrinsic curvature of $Σ$. Assume that the equation $aK_i+bK_e=c$ holds for some real constants $a\neq0$, $b>0$ and $c$. The main result of this article state that when such a surface is a topological sphere it is rotational.
We study ruled surfaces in R3 which are obtained from dual spher- ical indicatrix curves of dual Frenet vector fields. We find the Gaussian and mean curvatures of the ruled surfaces and give some results of being Wein- garten surface.
Let $M^n$ be either a simply connected space form or a rank-one symmetric space of noncompact type. We consider Weingarten hypersurfaces of $M\times\mathbb R$, which are those whose principal curvatures $k_1,\dots ,k_n$ and angle function $θ$ satisfy a relation $W(k_1,\dots,k_n,θ^2)=0,$ being $W$ a differentiable function which is symmetric with respect to $k_1,\dots, k_n.$ When $\partial W/\partial k_i>0$ on the positive cone of $\mathbb R^n,$ a strictly convex Weingarten hypersurface determined by $W$ is said to be elliptic. We show that, for a certain class of Weingarten functions $W,$ ther…
In this paper we will classify those translation surfaces in E3 involving polynomials which are Weingarten surfaces. We analyze Weingarten translation surfaces satisfying 2aH + bK = 0. We study also other types of translation surfaces, involving power functions, for which the second Gaussian curvature vanishes.
In this paper we classify Weingarten surfaces integrable in the sense of soliton theory. The criterion is that the associated Gauss equation possesses an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation with a nonremovable parameter. Under certain restrictions on the jet order, the answer is given by a third order ordinary differential equation to govern the functional dependence of the principal curvatures. Employing the scaling and translation (offsetting) symmetry, we give a general solution of the governing equation in terms of elliptic integrals. We show that the instances when the elliptic int…
The techniques used in this paper are based on the exterior calculus of Maurer-Cartan forms, and Weingarten surfaces are used to illustrate the methods that apply to quadratic exterior equations with constant coefficients. Isothermic {\it surfaces of constant astigmatism} (non-linear Weingarten surfaces whose difference of principal curvatures is a constant) are shown to represent dual surfaces of isothermic surfaces which satisfy the relation $H + αK = 0$.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $M$, we consider a warped product $\bar M = I \times_h M$ where $I$ is an open interval in $\Bbb R$. For a positive function $ψ$ defined on $\bar M$, we generalized the arguments in \cite{GRW2015} and \cite{RW16}, to obtain the curvature estimates for Hessian equations $σ_k(κ)=ψ(V,ν(V))$. We also obtain some existence results for the starshaped compact hypersurface $Σ$ satisfying the above equation with various assumptions.
A linear Weingarten surface in Euclidean space ${\bf R}^3$ is a surface whose mean curvature $H$ and Gaussian curvature $K$ satisfy a relation of the form $aH+bK=c$, where $a,b,c\in {\bf R}$. Such a surface is said to be hyperbolic when $a^2+4bc<0$. In this paper we classify all rotational linear Weingarten surfaces of hyperbolic type. As a consequence, we obtain a family of complete hyperbolic linear Weingarten surfaces in ${\bf R}^3$ that consists into periodic surfaces with self-intersections.
Given orientable Riemannian manifolds $M^n$ and $\bar M^{n+1},$ we study flows $F_t:M^n\rightarrow\bar M^{n+1},$ called Weingarten flows,in which the hypersurfaces $F_t(M)$ evolve in the direction of their normal vectors with speed given by a function $W$ of their principal curvatures, called a Weingarten function, which is homogeneous, monotonic increasing with respect to any of its variables, and positive on the positive cone. We obtain existence results for flows with isoparametric initial data, in which the hypersurfaces $F_t:M^n\rightarrow\bar M^{n+1}$ are all parallel, and $\bar M^{n+1}$ …
In this paper we study surfaces in Euclidean 3-space that satisfy a Weingarten condition of linear type as $κ_1=m κ_2 +n$, where $m$ and $n$ are real numbers and $κ_1$ and $κ_2$ denote the principal curvatures at each point of the surface. We investigate the possible existence of such surfaces parametrized by a uniparametric family of circles. Besides the surfaces of revolution, we prove that not exist more except the case $(m,n)=(-1,0)$, that is, if the surface is one of the classical examples of minimal surfaces discovered by Riemann.

In this paper, we propose an efficient method to estimate the Weingarten map for point cloud data sampled from manifold embedded in Euclidean space. A statistical model is established to analyze the asymptotic property of the estimator. In particular, we show the convergence rate as the sample size tends to infinity. We verify the convergence rate through simulated data and apply the estimated Weingarten map to curvature estimation and point cloud simplification to multiple real data sets.
We prove several topological properties of linear Weingarten surfaces of Bryant type, as wave fronts in hyperbolic 3-space. For example, we show the orientability of such surfaces, and also co-orientability when they are not flat. Moreover, we show an explicit formula of the non-holomorphic hyperbolic Gauss map via another hyperbolic Gauss map which is holomorphic. Using this, we show the orientability and co-orientability of CMC-1 faces (i.e., constant mean curvature one surfaces with admissible singular points) in de Sitter 3-space. (CMC-1 faces might not be wave fronts in general, but belon…
We define discrete flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space from the perspective of discrete integrable systems and prove properties that justify the definition. We show how these surfaces correspond to previously defined discrete constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, and we also describe discrete focal surfaces (discrete caustics) that can be used to define singularities on discrete flat surfaces. We also examine discrete linear Weingarten surfaces of Bryant type in hyperbolic 3-space, and consider an example of a discrete flat surface related to the Airy equation that exhibits…
In the work \cite{Laredo} the author shows that every hypersurface in Euclidean space is locally associated to the unit sphere by a sphere congruence, whose radius function $R$ is a geometric invariant of hypersurface. In this paper we define for any surface $Σ$ its spherical mean curvature $H_S$ which depends on principal curvatures of $Σ$ and the radius function $R$. Then we consider two classes of surfaces: the ones with $H_S = 0$, called $H_1$-surfaces, and the surfaces with spherical mean curvature of harmonic type, named $H_2$-surfaces. We provide for each these classes a Weierstrass-typ…
We prove a uniqueness theorem for immersed spheres of prescribed (non-constant) mean curvature in homogeneous three-manifolds. In particular, this uniqueness theorem proves a conjecture by A.D. Alexandrov about immersed spheres of prescribed Weingarten curvature in R3 for the special but important case of prescribed mean curvature. As a consequence, we extend the classical Hopf uniqueness theorem for constant mean curvature spheres to the case of immersed spheres of prescribed antipodally symmetric mean curvature in R3.
Let $M$ be a simply connected homogeneous three-manifold with isometry group of dimension $4$, and let $Σ$ be any compact surface of genus zero immersed in $M$ whose mean, extrinsic and Gauss curvatures satisfy a smooth elliptic relation $Φ(H,K_e,K)=0$. In this paper we prove that $Σ$ is a sphere of revolution, provided that the unique inextendible rotational surface $S$ in $M$ that satisfies this equation and touches its rotation axis orthogonally has bounded second fundamental form. In particular, we prove that: (i) any elliptic Weingarten sphere immersed in $\mathbb{H}^2\times \mathbb{R}$ i…
We study 2-dimensional submanifolds of the space ${\mathbb{L}}({\mathbb{H}}^3)$ of oriented geodesics of hyperbolic 3-space, endowed with the canonical neutral Kähler structure. Such a surface is Lagrangian iff there exists a surface in ${\mathbb{H}}^3$ orthogonal to the geodesics of $Σ$. We prove that the induced metric on a Lagrangian surface in ${\mathbb{L}}({\mathbb{H}}^3)$ has zero Gauss curvature iff the orthogonal surfaces in ${\mathbb{H}}^3$ are Weingarten: the eigenvalues of the second fundamental form are functionally related. We then classify the totally null surfaces in ${\mathbb{L…
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $M$, we consider a warped product $\bar M = I \times_h M$ where $I$ is an open interval in $\Rr$. We suppose that the mean curvature of the fibers do not change sign. Given a positive differentiable function $ψ$ in $\bar M$, we find a closed hypersurface $Σ$ which is solution of an equation of the form $F(B)=ψ$, where $B$ is the second fundamental form of $Σ$ and $F$ is a function satisfying certain structural properties. As examples, we may exhibit examples of hypersurfaces with prescribed higher order mean curvature.
In [7], Guan, Ren and Wang obtained a $C^2$ a priori estimate for admissible 2-convex hypersurfaces satisfying the Weingarten curvature equation $σ_2(κ(X))=f(X, ν(X)).$ In this note, we give a simpler proof of this result, and extend it to space forms.
For a submanifold with flat normal bundle in a space form there is a normal orthonormal basis that simultaneously diagonalizes the corresponding Weingarten operators, and at which these operators satisfy a simple Codazzi symmetry. When the second fundamental form has zero index of relative nullity, the image of the Gauss map as defined by Obata is a submanifold of a generalized Grassmannian manifold, with induced metric given by the third fundamental form, corresponding to the sum of the squares of these operators. In this case, we show that the Riemann curvature tensor of the Gauss image is c…
This paper is devoted to $C^2$ a priori estimates for strictly locally convex radial graphs with prescribed Weingarten curvature and boundary in space forms. By constructing two-step continuity process and applying degree theory arguments, existence results in space forms are established for prescribed Gauss curvature equation under the assumption of a strictly locally convex subsolution.
We classify the self-similar solutions to a class of Weingarten curvature flow of connected compact convex hypersurfaces, isometrically immersed into space forms with non-positive curvature, and obtain a new characterization of a sphere in a Euclidean space $\R^{n+1}$.
