In this paper, we deal with the inverse problem of the shape reconstruction of cavities and inclusions embedded in a linear elastic isotropic medium from boundary displacement's measurements. For, we consider a constrained minimization problem involving a boundary quadratic misfit functional with a regularization term that penalizes the perimeter of the cavity or inclusion to be identified. Then using a phase-field approach we derive a robust algorithm for the reconstruction of elastic inclusions and of cavities modeled as inclusions with a very small elasticity tensor.
We consider the problem of neutral inclusions for two-dimensional conductivity and anti-plane elasticity. The neutral inclusion, when inserted in a matrix having a uniform field, does not disturb the field outside the inclusion. The inclusion consists of a core and a shell. We show that if the inclusion is neutral to two linearly independent fields, then the core and the shell are confocal ellipses.
For the Generalized Plane Stress (GPS) problem in linear elasticity, we obtain an optimal stability estimate of logarithmic type for the inverse problem of determining smooth cavities inside a thin isotropic cylinder {}from a single boundary measurement of traction and displacement. The result is obtained by reformulating the GPS problem as a Kirchhoff-Love plate-like problem in terms of the Airy's function, and by using the strong unique continuation at the boundary for a Kirchhoff-Love plate operator under homogeneous Dirichlet conditions, which has been recently obtained in \cite{l:arv}.
We consider the Lamé system of linear elasticity when the inclusion has the extreme elastic constants. We show that the solutions to the Lamé system converge in appropriate $H^1$-norms when the shear modulus tends to infinity (the other modulus, the compressional modulus is fixed), and when the bulk modulus and the shear modulus tend to zero. Using this result, we show that the asymptotic expansion of the displacement vector in the presence of small inclusion is uniform with respect to Lamé parameters.
This paper is concerned with the stress concentration phenomenon in elastic composite materials when the inclusions are very closely spaced. We investigate the gradient blow-up estimates for the Lamé system of linear elasticity with partially infinite coefficients to show the dependence of the degree of stress enhancement on the distance between inclusions in a composite containing densely placed stiff inclusions. In this paper we assume that the inclusions to be of $C^{1, γ}$, weaker than the previous $C^{2, γ}$ assumption. To overcome this new difficulty, we make use of $W^{1, p}$ estimates …
In the region between close-to-touching hard inclusions, the stress may be arbitrarily large as the inclusions get closer. The stress is represented by the gradient of a solution to the Lamé system of linear elasticity. We consider the problem of characterizing the gradient blow-up of the solution in the narrow region between two inclusions and estimating its magnitude. We introduce singular functions which are constructed in terms of nuclei of strain and hence are solutions of the Lamé system, and then show that the singular behavior of the gradient in the narrow region can be precisely captu…
In this article we continue our study of higher Sobolev regularity of flexible convex integration solutions to differential inclusions arising from applications in materials sciences. We present a general framework yielding higher Sobolev regularity for Dirichlet problems with affine data in $\text{int}(K^{lc})$. This allows us to simultaneously deal with linear and nonlinear differential inclusion problems. We show that the derived higher integrability and differentiability exponent has a lower bound, which is independent of the position of the Dirichlet boundary data in $\text{int}(K^{lc})$.…
In this paper we review some recent results concerning inverse problems for thin elastic plates. The plate is assumed to be made by non-homogeneous linearly elastic material belonging to a general class of anisotropy. A first group of results concerns uniqueness and stability for the determination of unknown boundaries, including the cases of cavities and rigid inclusions. In the second group of results, we consider upper and lower estimates of the area of unknown inclusions given in terms of the work exerted by a couple field applied at the boundary of the plate. In particular, we extend prev…
According to the Eshelby conjecture, an ellipse or ellipsoid is the only shape that induces an interior uniform strain under a uniform far-field loading. We extend the Eshelby conjecture to domains of general shape for anti-plane elasticity. Specifically, we show that for each positive integer $N$, an inclusion induces an interior uniform strain under a polynomial loading of degree $N$ if and only if the exterior conformal map of the inclusion is a Laurent series of degree $N$. Furthermore, for the isotropic case, we characterize the shape of an inclusion by only using the first-degree polynom…
We consider the problem of reconstructing of the boundary of an unknown inclusion together with its conductivity from the localized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We give an exact reconstruction procedure and apply the method to an inverse boundary value problem for the system of the equations in the theory of elasticity.
We make precise some results on the cloaking of displacement fields in linear elasticity. In the spirit of transformation media theory, the transformed governing equations in Cosserat and Willis frameworks are shown to be equivalent to certain high contrast small defect problems for the usual Navier equations. We discuss near-cloaking for elasticity systems via a regularized transform and perform numerical experiments to illustrate our near-cloaking results. We also study the sharpness of the estimates from [H. Ammari, H. Kang, K. Kim and H. Lee, J. Diff. Eq. 254, 4446-4464 (2013)], wherein th…
This paper is the second part of a work devoted to the modelling of thin elastic plates with small, periodically distributed piezoelectric inclusions. We consider the equations of linear elasticity coupled with the electrostatic equation, with various kinds of electric boundary conditions. We derive the corresponding effective models when the thickness $a$ of the plate and the characteristic dimension $\varepsilon $ of the inclusions tend\ together to zero, in the two following situations: first when $a \simeq \varepsilon$, second when $a/\varepsilon$ tends to zero.
We consider the problem of dynamic cavity formation in isotropic compressible nonlinear elastic media. For the equations of radial elasticity we construct self-similar weak solutions that describe a cavity emanating from a state of uniform deformation. For dimensions $d =2, 3$ we show that cavity formation is necessarily associated with a unique precursor shock. We also study the bifurcation diagram and do a detailed analysis of the singular asymptotics associated to cavity initiation as a function of the cavity speed of the self-similar profiles. We show that for stress free cavities the crit…
We derive upper and lower estimates of the area of unknown defects in the form of either cavities or rigid inclusions in Mindlin-Reissner elastic plates in terms of the difference $δW$ of the works exerted by boundary loads on the defected and on the reference plate. It turns out that the upper estimates depend linearly on $δW$, whereas the lower ones depend quadratically on $δW$. These results continue a line of research concerning size estimates of extreme inclusions in electric conductors, elastic bodies and plates.
In this article we deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for the presence of `Conti-type', highly symmetric, exactly-stress free constructions in the geometrically non-linear, planar $n$-well problem, generalising results of [CKZ17]. Passing to the limit $n\rightarrow \infty$, this allows us to treat solid crystals and nematic elastomer differential inclusions simultaneously. In particular, we recover and generalise (non-linear) planar tripole star type deformations which were experimentally observed in [MA80,MA80a,KK91]. Further we discuss the corresponding geometrically linearised probl…
We establish large-scale interior Lipschitz estimates for solutions to systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and Dirichlet boundary conditions in domains with periodically placed inclusions of size $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$ and magnitude $δ$ by establishing $H^1$-convergence rates for such solutions. The interior estimates at the macroscopic scale are derived directly without the use of compactness via a Campanato-type scheme presented by S. Armstrong and C.K. Smart and that was adapted for uniformly elliptic equations in by Armstrong and Z. Shen.
The aim of this paper is to prove existence of weak solutions of hyperbolic-parabolic evolution inclusions defined on Lipschitz domains with mixed boundary conditions describing, for instance, damage processes and elasticity with inertia terms. To this end, a suitable weak formulation to deal with such evolution inclusions in a non-smooth setting is presented. Then, existence of weak solutions is proven by utilizing time-discretization, $H^2$-regularization of the displacement variable and variational techniques from [C. Heinemann, C. Kraus: Existence results of weak solutions for Cahn-Hilliar…
We consider the Lame system of linear elasticity with periodically distributed inclusions whose elastic parameters have high contrast compared to the background media. We develop a unified method based on layer potential techniques to quantify three convergence results when some parameters of the elastic inclusions are sent to extreme values. More precisely, we study the incompressible inclusions limit where the bulk modulus of the inclusions tends to infinity, the soft inclusions limit where both the bulk modulus and the shear modulus tend to zero, and the hard inclusions limit where the shea…
A typical phase field approach for describing phase separation and coarsening phenomena in alloys is the Cahn-Hilliard model. This model has been generalized to the so-called Cahn-Larché system by combining it with elasticity to capture non-neglecting deformation phenomena, which occur during phase separation and coarsening processes in the material. In order to account for damage effects, we extend the existing framework of Cahn-Hilliard and Cahn-Larché systems by incorporating an internal damage variable of local character. This damage variable allows to model the effect that damage of a mat…
In this paper, we are concerned with the effective elastic property of a two-phase high-contrast periodic composite with densely packed inclusions. The equations of linear elasticity are assumed. We first give a novel proof of the Flaherty-Keller formula for elliptic inclusions, which improves a recent result of Kang and Yu (Calc.Var.Partial Differential Equations, 2020). We construct an auxiliary function consisting of the Keller function and an additional corrected function depending on the coefficients of Lamé system and the geometry of inclusions, to capture the full singular term of the g…
A homogenization result is given for a material having brittle inclusions arranged in a periodic structure. According to the relation between the softness parameter and the size of the microstructure, three different limit models are deduced via Gamma-convergence. In particular, damage is obtained as limit of periodically distributed microfractures.

We derive asymptotic expansions for the displacement at the boundary of a smooth, elastic body in the presence of small inhomogeneities. Both the body and the inclusions are allowed to be anisotropic. This work extends prior work of CapdeBoscq and Vogelius ({\em Math. Modelling Num. Anal.} 37, 2003) for the conductivity case. In particular, we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the difference between the displacements at the boundary with and without inclusions, under Neumann boundary conditions, to first order in the measure of the inclusions. We impose no geometric conditions on the inclusion…
This work presents a general principle, in the spirit of convex integration, leading to a method for the characterization of Young measures generated by gradients of maps in $W^{1,p}$ with $p$ less than the space dimension, whose Jacobian determinant is subjected to a range of constraints. Two special cases are particularly important in the theories of elasticity and fluid dynamics: (a) the generating gradients have positive Jacobians that are uniformly bounded away from zero and (b) the underlying deformations are incompressible, corresponding to their Jacobian determinants being constantly o…
Since the seminal contribution of Geymonat, M{ü}ller, and Triantafyllidis, it is known that strong ellipticity is not necessarily conserved by homogenization in linear elasticity. This phenomenon is typically related to microscopic buckling of the composite material. The present contribution is concerned with the interplay between isotropy and strong ellipticity in the framework of periodic homogenization in linear elasticity. Mixtures of two isotropic phases may indeed lead to loss of strong ellipticity when arranged in a laminate manner. We show that if a matrix/inclusion type mixture of iso…
The inverse problem of antiplane elasticity on determination of the profiles of $n$ uniformly stressed inclusions is studied. The inclusions are in ideal contact with the surrounding matrix, the stress field inside the inclusions is uniform, and at infinity the body is subjected to antiplane uniform shear. The exterior of the inclusions, an $n$-connected domain, is treated as the image by a conformal map of an $n$-connected slit domain with the slits lying in the same line. The inverse problem is solved by quadratures by reducing it to two Riemann-Hilbert problems on a Riemann surface of genus…
In this paper we propose a nonlinear elasticity model of macromolecular conformational change (deformation) induced by electrostatic forces generated by an implicit solvation model. The Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the electrostatic potential is analyzed in a domain varying with the elastic deformation of molecules, and a new continuous model of the electrostatic forces is developed to ensure solvability of the nonlinear elasticity equations. We derive the estimates of electrostatic forces corresponding to four types of perturbations to an electrostatic potential field, and establish the exi…
We deal with the geometrical inverse problem of the shape reconstruction of cavities in a bounded linear isotropic medium by means of boundary data. The problem is addressed from the point of view of optimal control: the goal is to minimize in the class of Lipschitz domains a Kohn-Vogelius type functional with a perimeter regularization term which penalizes the perimeter of the cavity to be reconstructed. To solve numerically the optimization problem, we use a phase-field approach, approximating the perimeter functional with a Modica-Mortola relaxation and modeling the cavity as an inclusion w…
The focus of this work is on rigorous mathematical analysis of the topological derivative based detection algorithms for the localization of an elastic inclusion of vanishing characteristic size. A filtered quadratic misfit is considered and the performance of the topological derivative imaging functional resulting therefrom is analyzed. Our analysis reveals that the imaging functional may not attain its maximum at the location of the inclusion. Moreover, the resolution of the image is below the diffraction limit. Both phenomena are due to the coupling of pressure and shear waves propagating w…
The interaction of a thin rigid inclusion with a finite crack is studied. Two plane problems of elasticity are considered. The first one concerns the case when the upper side of the inclusion is completely debonded from the matrix, and the crack penetrates into the medium. In the second model, the upper side of the inclusion is partly separated from the matrix, that is the crack length $2a$ is less than $2b$, the inclusion length. It is shown that both problems are governed by a singular integral equation of the same structure. Derivation of the closed-form solution of this integral equation i…
In high-contrast composite materials, the electric field concentration is a common phenomenon when two inclusions are close to touch. It is important from an engineering point of view to study the dependence of the electric field on the distance between two adjacent inclusions. In this paper, we derive the upper and lower bounds of the gradient of solutions to the conductivity problem where two perfectly conducting inclusions are located very close to each other. To be specific, we extend the known results of Bao-Li-Yin (ARMA 2009) in two folds: First, we weaken the smoothness of the inclusion…
In this paper, we develop a factorization method to reconstruct cavities in a heat conductor by knowing the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map at the boundary of this conductor. The factorization method is a very well known reconstruction method for inverse problems described by self-adjoint elliptic equations. It enables us to reconstruct the boundaries of unknown targets such as cavities and inclusions. This method was successfully applied for examples to the inverse scattering problem by obstacles for the acoustic wave and the electrical impedance tomography problem. The forward model equations for t…
In composite material, the stress may be arbitrarily large in the narrow region between two close-to-touching hard inclusions. The stress is represented by the gradient of a solution to the Lamé system of linear elasticity. The aim of this paper is to establish lower bounds of the gradients of solutions of the Lamé system with partially infinite coefficients as the distance between the surfaces of discontinuity of the coefficients of the system tends to zero. Combining it with the pointwise upper bounds obtained in our previous work, the optimality of the blow-up rate of gradients is proved fo…
Lower bounds are obtained on the maximum field strength in one or both phases in a body containing two-phases. These bounds only incorporate boundary data that can be obtained from measurements at the surface of the body, and thus may be useful for determining if breakdown has necessarily occurred in one of the phases, or that some other nonlinearities have occurred. It is assumed the response of the phases is linear up to the point of electric, dielectric, or elastic breakdown, or up to the point of the onset of nonlinearities. These bounds are calculated for conductivity, with one or two set…
In this paper, we investigate a variational polycrystalline model in finite crystal plasticity with one active slip system and rigid elasticity. The task is to determine inner and outer bounds on the domain of the constrained macroscopic elastoplastic energy density, or equivalently, the affine boundary values of a related inhomogeneous differential inclusion problem. A geometry-independent Taylor inner bound, which we calculate directly, follows from considering constant-strain solutions to a relaxed problem in combination with well-known relaxation and convex integration results. On the othe…
