Describing the emergence of phases of condensed matter is one of the central challenges in physics. For this purpose many numerical and analytical methods have been developed, each with their own strengths and limitations. The functional renormalization group is one of these methods bridging between efficiency and accuracy. In this paper we derive a new truncated unity (TU) approach unifying real- and momentum space TU, called TU$^2$FRG. This formalism significantly improves the scaling compared to conventional momentum (TU)FRG when applied to large unit-cell models and models where the translational symmetry is broken.
Although the functional renormalization group (fRG) is by now a well-established method for investigating correlated electron systems, it is still undergoing significant technical and conceptual improvements. In particular, the motivation to optimally exploit the parallelism of modern computing platforms has recently led to the development of the "truncated-unity" functional renormalization group (TU-fRG). Here, we review this fRG variant, and we provide its extension to multiband systems with spin-orbit coupling. Furthermore, we discuss some aspects of the implementation and outline opportuni…

We derive a novel computational scheme for functional Renormalization Group (fRG) calculations for interacting fermions on 2D lattices. The scheme is based on the exchange parametrization fRG for the two-fermion interaction, with additional insertions of truncated partitions of unity. These insertions decouple the fermionic propagators from the exchange propagators and lead to a separation of the underlying equations. We demonstrate that this separation is numerically advantageous and may pave the way for refined, large-scale computational investigations even in the case of complex multiband s…
Using a leading algorithmic implementation of the functional renormalization group (fRG) for interacting fermions on two-dimensional lattices, we provide a detailed analysis of its quantitative reliability for the Hubbard model. In particular, we show that the recently introduced multiloop extension of the fRG flow equations for the self-energy and two-particle vertex allows for a precise match with the parquet approximation also for two-dimensional lattice problems. The refinement with respect to previous fRG-based computation schemes relies on an accurate treatment of the frequency and momen…
We present multiloop flow equations in the functional renormalization group (fRG) framework for the four-point vertex and self-energy, formulated for a general fermionic many-body problem. This generalizes the previously introduced vertex flow [F. B. Kugler and J. von Delft, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 057403 (2018)] and provides the necessary corrections to the self-energy flow in order to complete the derivative of all diagrams involved in the truncated fRG flow. Due to its iterative one-loop structure, the multiloop flow is well-suited for numerical algorithms, enabling improvement of many fRG co…
We study the Fermi-edge singularity, describing the response of a degenerate electron system to optical excitation, in the framework of the functional renormalization group (fRG). Results for the (interband) particle-hole susceptibility from various implementations of fRG (one- and two- particle-irreducible, multi-channel Hubbard-Stratonovich, flowing susceptibility) are compared to the summation of all leading logarithmic (log) diagrams, achieved by a (first-order) solution of the parquet equations. For the (zero-dimensional) special case of the X-ray-edge singularity, we show that the leadin…
We present an implementation of a truncated unity parquet solver (TUPS) which solves the parquet equations using a truncated form-factor basis for the fermionic momenta. This way fluctuations from different scattering channels are treated on an equal footing. The essentially linear scaling of computational costs in the number of untruncated bosonic momenta allows us to treat system sizes of up to 76x76 discrete lattice momenta, unprecedented by previous unbiased methods that include the frequency dependence of the vertex. With TUPS, we provide the first numerical evidence that the parquet appr…
The parquet equations are a self-consistent set of equations for the effective two-particle vertex of an interacting many-fermion system. The application of these equations to bulk models is, however, demanding due to the complex emergent momentum and frequency structure of the vertex. Here, we show how a channel-decomposition by means of truncated unities, which was developed in the context of the functional renormalization group to efficiently treat the momentum dependence, can be transferred to the parquet equations. This leads to a significantly reduced numerical effort scaling only linear…
A simple yet paradigmatic model for the interplay of strong electronic correlations and geometric frustration is the triangular lattice Hubbard model. Recently it was proposed that moiré structures of transition metal dichalcogenides can be used to simulate extended versions that include non-local density-density interactions. We study competing instabilities of interacting electrons in such an extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice near a filling where the density of states has a Van Hove singularity. We employ a truncated-unity functional renormalization group approach to investiga…
The channel-decomposed functional renormalization group (FRG) approach, most recently in the variant of truncated-unity-(TU-)FRG, has so far been used for various two-dimensional model systems. Yet, for many interesting material systems the third spatial dimension is of clear relevance. Therefore FRG schemes working in three spatial dimensions (3D) are definitely on the wishlist. Here we demonstrate that a 3D TUFRG scheme can be set up in straightforward extension of previous 2D codes and gives physically sensible results with affordable numerical effort, both regarding the qualitative as well…
We study competing orders of spinless fermions in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interaction. We calculate the effective, momentum-resolved two-particle vertex in an unbiased way in terms of the functional renormalization group method and compare two different schemes for the momentum discretization, one based on dividing the Fermi surface into patches and one based on a channel decomposition. We study attractive and repulsive nearest-neighbor interaction and find a competition of pairing and charge instabilities. In the attractive case, a Pomeranchuk instability oc…
We investigate the effect of long-range Coulomb interaction on the quasiparticle properties and the dielectric function of clean three-dimensional Weyl semimetals at zero temperature using a functional renormalization group (FRG) approach. The Coulomb interaction is represented via a bosonic Hubbard-Stratonovich field which couples to the fermionic density. We derive truncated FRG flow equations for the fermionic and bosonic self-energies and for the three-legged vertices with two fermionic and one bosonic external legs. We consider two different cutoff schemes --- cutoff in fermionic or boson…
We introduce an equilibrium formulation of the functional renormalization group (fRG) for inhomogeneous systems capable of dealing with spatially finite-ranged interactions. In the general third order truncated form of fRG, the dependence of the two-particle vertex is described by O(N^4) independent variables, where N is the dimension of the single-particle system. In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. B 89, 045128 (2014)], the so-called coupled-ladder approximation (CLA) was introduced and shown to admit a consistent treatment for models with a purely onsite interaction, reducing the vertex to O(N^…
We study the many-body instabilities of correlated electrons on the half-filled honeycomb lattice with enhanced exchange coupling. The system is described by an extended Hubbard model including the next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion ($V_2$) and the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction ($J$). We use the truncated unity functional renormalization group approach to determine a schematic ground-state phase diagram with higher resolution in the parameter space of $V_2$ and $J$. In the absence of the on-site repulsion and presence of sizable next-nearest-neighbor repulsion and enhanced nearest…
Using the recently introduced multiloop extension of the functional renormalization group, we compute the frequency- and momentum-dependent self-energy of the two-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling and weak coupling. We show that, in the truncated-unity approach for the vertex, it is essential to adopt the Schwinger-Dyson form of the self-energy flow equation in order to capture the pseudogap opening. We provide an analytic understanding of the key role played by the flow scheme in correctly accounting for the impact of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations. For the resulting pseudogap, we…
We present a multiloop pseudofermion functional renormalization group (pffRG) approach to quantum spin systems. As a test case, we study the spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, a prime example of a geometrically frustrated magnet believed to host a quantum spin liquid. Our main physical result is that, at pure nearest-neighbor coupling, the system shows indications for an algebraic spin liquid through slower-than-exponential decay with distance for the static spin susceptibility, while the pseudofermion self-energy develops intriguing low-energy features. Methodological…
We describe an efficient approximation for the electron-electron interaction in the determination of the low-energy effective interaction in multiband lattice systems. By using ideas for channel decomposition, form-factor expansion and the truncated-unity technique we describe the interaction as arising from the non-local and orbital-dependent coupling of particle-hole and particle-particle bilinears formed by fields residing in the same one or two orbitals. This allows us to employ the constrained functional renormalization group (cfRG) with a suitable momentum and frequency discretization. T…

The impact of local and nonlocal density-density interactions on the electronic instabilities in the honeycomb lattice is widely investigated. Some early studies proposed the emergence of interaction-induced topologically nontrivial phases, but recently, it was denied in several works including renormalization group calculations with refined momentum resolution. We use the truncated unity functional renormalization group to study the many-body instabilities of electrons on the half-filled honeycomb lattice, focusing on the effect of the exchange interaction. We show that varying the next-neare…
