Black holes in certain modified gravity theories that contain a scalar field coupled to curvature invariants are known to possess (monopole) scalar hair while non-black-hole spacetimes (like neutron stars) do not. Therefore, as a neutron star collapses to a black hole, scalar hair must grow until it settles to the stationary black hole solution with (monopole) hair. In this paper, we study this process in detail and show that the growth of scalar hair is tied to the appearance and growth of the event horizon (before an apparent horizon forms), which forces scalar modes that would otherwise (in the future) become divergent to be radiated away. We prove this result rigorously in general first for a large class of modified theories, and then we exemplify the results by studying the temporal evolution of the scalar field in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity in two backgrounds: (i) a collapsing Oppenheimer-Snyder background, and (ii) a collapsing neutron star background. In case (i), we find an exact scalar field solution analytically, while in case (ii) we solve for the temporal evolution of the scalar field numerically, with both cases supporting the conclusion presented above. Our results suggest that the emission of a burst of scalar field radiation is a necessary condition for black hole formation in a large class of modified theories of gravity.
We study rotating black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. These black holes emerge from static black holes with monopole hair when a finite horizon angular velocity is imposed. At critical values of the horizon angular velocity and the horizon radius, they bifurcate with embedded Kerr-Newman black holes. The non-Abelian black holes possess an electric dipole moment, but no electric charge is induced by the rotation. We deduce that gravitating regular monopoles possess a gyroelectric ratio g_el=2.
The late-time tail behaviors of massive scalar fields are examined analytically in the background of a black hole with a global monopole. It is found that the presence of a solid deficit angle in the background metric makes the massive scalar fields decay faster in the intermediate times. However, the asymptotically late-time tail is not affected and it has the same decay rate of $t^{-5/6}$ as in the Schwarzschild and nearly extreme Reissner-Nordström backgrounds.
We study the stability of a spherically symmetric black hole with a global monopole hair. Asymptotically the spacetime is flat but has a deficit solid angle which depends on the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field. When the vacuum expectation value is larger than a certain critical value, this spacetime has a cosmological event horizon. We investigate the stability of these solutions against the spherical and polar perturbations and confirm that the global monopole hair is stable in both cases. Although we consider some particular modes in the polar case, our analysis suggests the con…
This paper is intended to give a review of the recent developments on black holes with Skyrme hair. The Einstein-Skyrme system is known to possess black hole solutions with Skyrme hair. The spherically symmetric black hole skyrmion with B=1 was the first discovered counter example of the no-hair conjecture for black holes. Recently we found the B=2 axially symmetric black hole skyrmion. In this system, the black hole at the center of the skyrmion absorbs the baryon number partially, leaving fractional charge outside the horizon. Therefore the baryon number is no longer conserved. We examine th…
Charged black hole solutions with pion hair are discussed. These can be used to study monopole black hole catalysis of proton decay. There also exist multi- black hole skyrmion solutions with BPS monopole behavior.
We present an exact black hole solution in a model having besides gravity a dilaton and a monopole field. The solution has three free parameters, one of which can be identified with the monopole charge, and another with the ADM mass. The metric is asymptotically flat and has two horizons and irremovable singularity only at $r=0$. The dilaton field is singular only at $r=0$. The dominant and the strong energy condition are satisfied outside and on the external horizon. According to a formulation of the no hair conjecture the solution is "hairy". Also the well know GHS-GM solution is obtained fr…
We present an exact black hole solution in a model having besides gravity a dilaton and a monopole field, which is a generalization of a black hole solution we have found. The new solution, as the previous one, has three free parameters, one of which can be identified with the monopole charge, and another with the ADM mass. Its metric is asymptotically flat, has two horizon, irremovable singularity only at $r=0$, and the dilaton field is singular only at $r=0$. The dominant and the strong energy condition are satisfied outside and on the external horizon. According to a formulation of the no h…
We construct static axially symmetric black holes in SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Located in between a monopole-antimonopole pair, these black holes possess magnetic dipole hair. The difference of their mass and their horizon mass equals the mass of the regular monopole-antimonopole solution, as expected from the isolated horizon framework.
We give arguments for the existence of ``radial excitations'' of gravitational global monopoles with any number of zeros of the Higgs field and present numerical results for solutions with up to two zeros. All these solutions possess a de Sitter like cosmological horizon, outside of which they become singular. In addition we study corresponding static ``hairy'' black hole solutions, representing black holes sitting inside a global monopole core. In particular, we determine their existence domains as a function of their horizon radius rh.
I review some recent results on black holes with hair. I focus on the magnetically charged black holes in spontaneously broken Yang-Mills-Higgs theories and on the related self-gravitating magnetic monopoles. Some implications for black hole thermodynamics are discussed.
We consider charged black holes with scalar hair obtained in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models, where the scalar field is coupled to the Maxwell invariant with a quartic coupling function. Besides the Reissner-Nordström black holes, these models allow for black holes with scalar hair. Scrutinizing the domain of existence of these hairy black holes, we observe a critical behavior: A limiting configuration is encountered at a critical value of the charge, where spacetime splits into two parts: an inner spacetime with a finite scalar field and an outer extremal Reissner-Nordström spacetim…
We show that black holes can posses a long-range quantum hair of super-massive tensor fields, which can be detected by Aharonov-Bohm tabletop interference experiments, in which a quantum-hairy black hole, or a remnant particle, passes through the loop of a magnetic solenoid. The long distance effect does not decouple for an arbitrarily high mass of the hair-providing field. Because Kaluza-Klein and String theories contain infinite number of massive tensor fields, we study black holes with quantum Kaluza-Klein hair. We show that in five dimensions such a black hole can be interpreted as a strin…
No-hair theorems exclude the existence of nontrivial scalar and massive vector hair outside four-dimensional, static, asymptotically flat black-hole spacetimes. We show, by explicitly building nonlinear solutions, that black holes can support massive graviton hair in theories of massive gravity. These hairy solutions are, most likely, the generic end state of the recently discovered monopole instability of Schwarzschild black holes in massive graviton theories.

In a seminal paper by Brown et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, no. 19, 191301 (2016)] a new conjecture was proposed, namely it was argued that the quantum complexity of a holographic state is equal to action of a Wheeler-DeWitt patch in the late time limit suggesting that the fastest computer in nature are the black holes. Motivated by this conjecture, in the present paper, we study the action growth rate for different types of black holes such as dyonic, nonlinear charge, stringy hair, black hole with a global monopole and a cosmic string. In general we find that action growth rates of the Wheeler…
We here review asymptotically flat rotating black holes in the presence of non-Abelian gauge fields. Like their static counterparts these black holes are no longer uniquely determined by their global charges. In the case of pure SU(2) Yang-Mills fields, the rotation generically induces an electric charge, while the black holes do not carry a magnetic charge. When a Higgs field is coupled, rotating black holes with monopole hair arise in the case of a Higgs triplet, while in the presence of a complex Higgs doublet the black holes carry sphaleron hair. The inclusion of a dilaton allows for Smarr…
We consider globally regular and black hole solutions in SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, coupled to a dilaton field. The basic solutions represent magnetic monopoles, monopole-antimonopole systems or black holes with monopole or dipole hair. When the globally regular solutions carry additionally electric charge, an angular momentum density results, except in the simplest spherically symmetric case. We evaluate the global charges of the solutions and their effective action, and analyze their dependence on the gravitational coupling strength. We show, that in the presence of a dilaton fi…
We consider global monopoles as well as black holes with global monopole hair in Einstein-Goldstone model with a cosmological constant in four spacetime dimensions. Similar to the $Λ=0$ case, the mass of these solutions defined in the standard way diverges. We use a boundary counterterm subtraction method to compute the mass and action of $Λ\neq 0$ configurations. The mass of the asymptotically de Sitter solutions computed in this way turns out to take positive values in a specific parameter range and, for a relaxed set of asymptotic boundary conditions, yields a counterexample to the maximal …
Recent numerical relativity simulations within the Einstein--Maxwell--(charged-)Klein-Gordon (EMcKG) system have shown that the non-linear evolution of a superradiantly unstable Reissner-Nordström black hole (BH) enclosed in a cavity, leads to the formation of a BH with scalar hair. Perturbative evidence for the stability of such hairy BHs has been independently established, confirming they are the true endpoints of the superradiant instability. The same EMcKG system admits also charged scalar soliton-type solutions, which can be either stable or unstable. Using numerical relativity techniques…
We study black hole solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to a specific global symmetry breaking Goldstone model described by an O(3) isovector scalar field in four spacetime dimensions. Our configurations are static and spherically symmetric, approaching at infinity a Minkowski spacetime background. A set of globally regular, particle-like solutions are found in the limit of vanishing event horizon radius. These configurations can be viewed as 'regularised' global monopoles, since their mass is finite and the spacetime geometry has no deficit angle. As an unusual feature, we notice the existe…
I dynamically evolve spherically symmetric spacetimes containing gravitational 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles and determine the stable end states of the evolutions. I do so to study stability and critical behavior of the well-known static gravitational monopole solutions. For the static solutions, there exist regions of parameter space where two static monopole black holes and the static Reissner-Nordstrom black hole have the same mass. I find strong evidence that one of the static monopole black hole solutions is a critical solution, to which near-critical solutions are dynamically attracted bef…
Dynamics of Interacting Murnaghan-Equation-of-State Fluids with Global Monopole and Nonlinear Power-Yang-Mills Hair in Critical-Dimension AdS Black Holes
We show that the nonlinear $σ-$model in an asymptotically $AdS_3$ space-time admits a novel local symmetry. The field action is assumed to be quartic in the nonlinear $σ-$model fields and minimally coupled to gravity. The local symmetry transformation simultaneously twists the nonlinear $σ-$model fields and changes the space-time metric, and it can be used to map an extremal $BTZ$ black hole to infinitely many hairy black hole solutions.
The no-hair theorem of general relativity states that isolated black holes are characterized by three parameters: mass, spin, and charge. In this Letter we consider Kerr black holes endowed with highly magnetized plasma-filled magnetospheres. Using general relativistic kinetic plasma and resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulations, we show that a dipole magnetic field on the event horizon opens into a split-monopole and reconnects in a plasmoid-unstable current-sheet. The no-hair theorem is satisfied, in the sense that all components of the stress-energy tensor decay exponentially in time. We m…
We generalize a class of magnetically charged black holes holes non-minimally coupled to two scalar fields previously found by one of us [gr-qc/9910041] to the case of multiple scalar fields. The black holes possess a novel type of primary scalar hair, which we call a contingent primary hair: although the solutions possess degrees of freedom which are not completely determined by the other charges of the theory, the charges necessarily vanish in the absence of the magnetic monopole. Only one constraint relates the black hole mass to the magnetic charge and scalar charges of the theory. We obta…
Explicit Robinson-Trautman solution with minimally coupled free scalar field is derived and analyzed. It is shown that this solution contains curvature singularity which is initially naked but later the horizon envelopes it. We use quasilocal horizon definition and prove its existence in later retarded times using sub- and supersolution method combined with growth estimates. We show that the solution is generally of algebraic type II but reduces to type D in spherical symmetry.

We present new analytic and numerical results for self-gravitating SU(2)-Higgs magnetic monopoles approaching the black hole threshold. Our investigation extends to large Higgs self-coupling, lambda, a regime heretofore unexplored. When lambda is small, the critical solution where a horizon first appears is extremal Reissner-Nordstrom outside the horizon but has a nonsingular interior. When lambda is large, the critical solution is an extremal black hole with non-Abelian hair and a mass less than the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom value. The transition between these two regimes is reminiscent of …
The possibility of mining the rotational energy from black holes has far--reaching implications. Such energy extraction could occur even for isolated black holes, if hypothetical ultralight bosonic particles exist in Nature, leading to a new equilibrium state $-$ a black hole with synchronised bosonic hair $-$ whose lifetime could exceed the age of the Universe. A natural question is then: for an isolated black hole and at maximal efficiency, how large is the energy fraction $ε$ that can be extracted from a Kerr black hole by the superradiant growth of the dominant mode? In other words, how ha…
We discuss the behaviour of the Dirac fermions in a general spherically symmetric black hole background with a non-trivial topology of the event horizon. Both massive and massless cases are taken into account. The analytical studies of intermediate and late-time behaviour of massive Dirac hair in the background of a black hole with a global monopole and dilaton black hole pierced by a cosmic string will be conducted. It was revealed that in the case of a global monopole swallowed by a static black hole the intermediate late-time behaviour depends on the mass of the Dirac field, the multiple nu…
We investigate the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a four-dimensional Einstein--Yang-Mills-SU(2) theory with a negative cosmological constant. Special attention is paid to configurations with a unit magnetic charge. We find that a set of Reissner-Nordström--Anti-de Sitter black holes can become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. However, the hairy black holes are never thermodynamically favoured over the full set of abelian monopole solutions. The thermodynamics of the generic configurations possessing a noninteger magnetic charge is also discussed.

The opportunity to study physics at supra-nuclear densities through X-ray observations of neutron stars has led to in-depth investigations of certain approximately universal relations that can remove degeneracies in pulse profile models. One such set of relations determines all of the multipole moments of a neutron star just from the first three (the mass monopole, the current dipole and the mass quadrupole moment) approximately independently of the equation of state. These three-hair relations were found to hold in neutron stars that rotate rigidly, as is the case in old pulsars, but neutron …
Through numerical simulations of a minimally coupled massive Klein-Gordon scalar field, we show that it is possible to grow hair on a Schwarzschild black hole if one assumes an initial periodically time-varying but spatially homogeneous scalar background. By "hair", we mean a non-trivial profile in the scalar field. We find that this profile emerges on a timescale related to the mass of the black hole, with features related to the mass of the scalar particle. We undertake simulations with and without backreaction on the metric and see that the essential, qualitative features remain consistent.…

We propose a physically sensible formulation of initial value problem for black hole perturbations in higher-order scalar-tensor theories. As a first application, we study monopole perturbations around stealth Schwarzschild solutions in a shift- and reflection-symmetric subclass of degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. In particular, we investigate the time evolution of the monopole perturbations by solving a two-dimensional wave equation and analyze the Vishveshwara's classical scattering experiment, i.e., the time evolution of a Gaussian wave packet. As a result, we confirm…
We study the process of fully nonlinear dynamical scalarization starting from a charged black hole or a naked singularity in asymptotically flat spacetime in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. Initially the dilaton field is negligible compared to the gravitational and the Maxwell field. Then the dilaton field experiences an immediate growth, later it oscillates with damping amplitude and finally settles down to a finite value. For a hairy black hole develops from an original Reissner-Nordström black hole, since the dilaton oscillation and decay are almost independent of the coupling paramete…
We present a numerical analysis of the stability properties of the black holes with scalar hair constructed by Herdeiro and Radu. We prove the existence of a novel gauge where the scalar field perturbations decouple from the metric perturbations, and analyse the resulting quasinormal mode spectrum. We find unstable modes with characteristic growth rates which for uniformly small hair are almost identical to those of a massive scalar field on a fixed Kerr background.
Quantum fluctuation consequences have significant role in high-energy physics. These fluctuation often regarded as a correction of the infrared (IR) limit. Such correction contribute to the high-energy limit of thermodynamical quantities and the stability conditions of black holes. In this work, we analyze the thermal stability of black holes in the presence of thermal fluctuations. We consider AdS black hole in Born-Infeld massive gravity with non-abelian hair and the charged AdS black hole with a global monopole. We develop many thermodynamical quantities such as entropy, temperature, pressu…
Any recipe to grow black hole hair has to circumvent no-hair theorems by violating some of their assumptions. Recently discovered hairy black hole solutions exist due to the fact that their scalar fields don't inherit the symmetries of the spacetime metric. We present here a general analysis of the constraints which limit the possible forms of such a hair, for both the real and the complex scalar fields. These results can be taken as a novel piece of the black hole uniqueness theorems or simply as a symmetry noninheriting Ansätze guide. In addition we introduce new classification of the gravit…
It has been shown recently that extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes perturbed by a minimally coupled, free, massless scalar field have permanent scalar hair. The hair - a conserved charge calculated at the black hole's event horizon - can be measured by a certain expression at future null infinity: the latter approaches the hair inversely in time. We generalize this newly discovered hair also for extreme Kerr black holes. We study the behavior of nearly extreme black hole hair and its measurement at future null infinity as a transient phenomenon. For nearly extreme black holes the measureme…
Scalar fields around compact objects are of interest for scalar-tensor theories of gravity and dark matter models consisting of a massive scalar, e.g. axions. We study the behaviour of a scalar field around a Kerr black hole with non trivial asymptotic boundary conditions - both non zero density and non zero angular momentum. Starting from an initial radially homogeneous configuration, a scalar cloud is accreted, which asymptotes to known stationary configurations over time. We study the cloud growth for different parameters including black hole spin, scalar field mass, and the scalar field de…
General Relativity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field in three dimensions is shown to admit exact analytic soliton solutions, such that the metric and the scalar field are regular everywhere. Since the scalar field acquires slow fall-off at infinity, the soliton describes an asymptotically AdS spacetime in a relaxed sense as compared with the one of Brown and Henneaux. Nevertheless, the asymptotic symmetry group remains to be the conformal group, and the algebra of the canonical generators possesses the standard central extension. For this class of asymptotic behavior, the theory also …
By considering AdS charged black hole in the context of extended thermodynamic as the working substance we use it as a heat engine. We investigate the effect of hairy charge on the evolution of efficiency and Carnot efficiency along with electric charge. Because of interesting thermodynamic behavior of hairy black holes it would be natural to know their effects when we use black hole as a heat engine. We show that the hairy charge increases the efficiency, and so maximum temperature would be happened for bigger Maxwell charge when this hairy charge grows. For the fixed electric charges, the ef…
An old result ({\tt astro-ph/9905303}) by Jacobson implies that a black hole with Schwarzschild radius $r_s$ acquires scalar hair, $Q \propto r_s^2 μ$, when the (canonically normalized) scalar field in question is slowly time-dependent far from the black hole, $\partial_t ϕ\simeq μM_p$ with $μr_s \ll 1$ time-independent. Such a time dependence could arise in scalar-tensor theories either from cosmological evolution, or due to the slow motion of the black hole within an asymptotic spatial gradient in the scalar field. Most remarkably, the amount of scalar hair so induced is independent of the s…
In a recent letter, we presented numerical relativity simulations, solving the full Einstein--Maxwell--Klein-Gordon equations, of superradiantly unstable Reissner-Nordström black holes (BHs), enclosed in a cavity. Low frequency, spherical perturbations of a charged scalar field, trigger this instability. The system's evolution was followed into the non-linear regime, until it relaxed into an equilibrium configuration, found to be a $\textit{hairy}$ BH: a charged horizon in equilibrium with a scalar field condensate, whose phase is oscillating at the (final) critical frequency. Here, we investi…
