Lifshitz transition (LT) refers to an abrupt change in the electronic structure and Fermi surface, and is associated to a variety of emergent quantum phenomena. Amongst the LTs observed in known materials, the field-induced LT has been rare and its origin remains elusive. To understand the origin of field-induced LT, it is important to extend the material basis beyond the usual setting of heavy fermion metals. Here, we report on a field-induced LT in PrAlSi, a magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate with localized 4$f$ electrons, through a study of magnetotransport up to 55 T. The quantum oscillation analysis reveals that across a threshold field $B^*\approx$14.5 T the oscillation frequency ($F_1$ = 43 T) is replaced by two new frequencies ($F_2$ = 62 T and $F_3$ = 103 T). Strikingly, the LT occurs well below quantum limit, with obvious temperature-dependent oscillation frequency and field-dependent cyclotron mass. Our work not only enriches the rare examples of field-induced LTs, but also paves the way for further investigation on the interplay among topology, magnetism and electronic correlation.
Magnetic topological materials are a class of compounds with the underlying interplay of nontrivial band topology and magnetic spin configuration. Extensive interests have been aroused due to their application potential involved with an array of exotic quantum states. With angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, here we study the electronic properties of two magnetic Weyl semimetal candidates PrAlSi and SmAlSi. Though the two compounds harbor distinct magnetic ground states (ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic for PrAlSi and SmAlSi, respectively) and 4$f$ s…
We report a comprehensive investigation of the structural, magnetic, transport and thermodynamic properties of a single crystal PrAlSi, in comparison to its nonmagnetic analogue LaAlSi. PrAlSi exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at $T_C$ = 17.8 K which, however, is followed by two weak phase transitions at lower temperatures. Based on the combined dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, we propose the two reentrant magnetic phases below $T_C$ to be spin glasses or ferromagnetic cluster glasses. When the magnetic glassy states are suppressed by small field, several remarkable features a…
The application of pressure to elemental bismuth reduces its conduction-valence band overlap, and results in a semimetal-semiconductor (SMSC) transition around 25 kbar. This transition is nominally of the topological "Lifshitz" Fermi surface variety, but there are open questions about the role of interactions at low charge densities. Using a novel pressure cell with optical access, we have performed an extensive study of bismuth's infrared conductivity under pressure. In contrast to the expected pure band behavior we find signatures of enhanced interaction effects, including strongly coupled c…
We have applied nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the distinctive network of nodal lines in the Dirac semimetal ZrSiTe. The low-$T$ behavior is dominated by a symmetry-protected nodal line, with NMR providing a sensitive probe of the diamagnetic response of the associated carriers. A sharp low-$T$ minimum in NMR shift and $(T_1T)^{-1}$ provides a quantitative measure of the dispersionless, quasi-2D behavior of this nodal line. We also identify a van Hove singularity closely connected to this nodal line, and an associated $T$-induced Lifshitz transition. A disconnect in the NMR s…
We report on the status of ongoing Hybrid-Monte-Carlo simulations of the tight-binding model of mono-layer graphene. We present results concerning the semimetal-insulator phase transition, whereby two-body interactions are modeled by a partially screened Coulomb potential which takes into account screening by electrons in the lower $σ$-orbitals. We obtain evidence that finite-size effects may still be present in the current estimate of the critical coupling strength $α_C$, which was previously extracted from simulations on lattice-sizes up to $N_x=N_y=18$. We also present preliminary results c…
Using soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we probed the bulk electronic structure of Td MoTe2. We found that on-site Coulomb interaction leads to a Lifshitz transition, which is essential for a precise description of the electronic structure. A hybrid Weyl semimetal state with a pair of energy bands touching at both type-I and type-II Weyl nodes is indicated by comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations. Unveiling the importance of Coulomb interaction opens up a new route to comprehend the unique properties of MoTe2, and is significant for understanding the …
We investigate the metal-insulator transition (MIT) of the osmium pyrochlore oxide Cd2Os2O7 through transport and magnetization measurements. The MIT and a magnetic transition to the all-in/all-out (AIAO) order occur simultaneously at 227 K. We propose a mechanism based on a Lifshitz transition induced by the AIAO magnetic order probably via strong spin-orbit couplings in the specific semimetallic band structure. It is suggested, moreover, that two observed puzzles, a finite conductivity near T = 0 and an emergence of weak ferromagnetic moments, are not bulk properties but originate at magneti…
In a semimetal, both electron and hole carriers contribute to the density of states at the Fermi level. The small band overlaps and multi-band effects give rise to many novel electronic properties, such as relativistic Dirac fermions with linear dispersion, titanic magnetoresistance and unconventional superconductivity. Black phosphorus has recently emerged as an exceptional semiconductor with high carrier mobility and a direct, tunable bandgap. Of particular importance is the search for exotic electronic states in black phosphorus, which may amplify the material's potential beyond semiconduct…
Recent reports of a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals (FM WSM) have led to a resurgence of interest in this enigmatic phenomenon. However, due to a lack of tunable materials, the interplay between the intrinsic mechanism caused by Berry curvature and extrinsic mechanisms due to scattering remains unclear in FM WSMs. In this contribution, we present a thorough investigation of both the extrinsic and intrinsic AHE in a new family of FM WSMs, PrAlGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$, where $x$ can be tuned continuously. From DFT calculations, we show that the two end members, PrAlGe …
Weyl semimetals are one kind of three-dimensional gapless semimetal with nontrivial topology in the momentum space. The chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals manifests as a charge imbalance between the Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities induced by parallel electric and magnetic fields. We investigate the chiral anomaly effect on the plasmon mode in both intrinsic and doped Weyl semimetals within the random phase approximation. We prove that the chiral anomaly gives rise to a different plasmon mode in intrinsic Weyl semimetals. We also find the chiral anomaly leads to some exotic properties in the …
We continue our recently proposed holographic description of single-particle correlation functions for four-dimensional chiral fermions with Lifshitz scaling at zero chemical potential, paying particular attention to the dynamical exponent z = 2. We present new results for the spectral densities and dispersion relations at non-zero momenta and temperature. In contrast to the relativistic case with z = 1, we find the existence of a quantum phase transition from a non-Fermi liquid into a Fermi liquid in which two Fermi surfaces spontaneously form, even at zero chemical potential. Our findings sh…
Extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) was recently discovered in many non-magnetic materials, while its underlying mechanism remains poorly understood due to the complex electronic structure of these materials. Here, we report an investigation of the $α$-phase WP$_2$, a topologically trivial semimetal with monoclinic crystal structure (C2/m), which contrasts to the recently discovered robust type-II Weyl semimetal phase in $β$-WP$_2$. We found that $α$-WP$_2$ exhibits almost all the characteristics of XMR materials: the near-quadratic field dependence of MR, a field-induced up-turn in resist…
The electronic band structure of correlated Ca3Ru2O7 featuring an antiferromagnetic as well as a structural transition has been determined theoretically at high temperatures, which has led to the understanding of the remarkable properties of Ca3Ru2O7 such as the bulk spin valve effects. However, its band structure and Fermi surface (FS) below the structural transition have not been resolved even though a FS consisting of electron pockets was found experimentally. Here we report magneto electrical transport and thermoelectric measurements with the electric current and temper- ature gradient dir…
Strain is ubiquitous in solid-state materials, but despite its fundamental importance and technological relevance, leveraging externally applied strain to gain control over material properties is still in its infancy. In particular, strain control over the diverse phase transitions and topological states in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) remains an open challenge. Here, we exploit uniaxial strain to stabilize the long-debated structural ground state of the 2D topological semimetal IrTe$_2$, which is hidden in unstrained samples. Combined angle-resolved photoemissi…
Fermi surface is at the heart of our understanding of metals and strongly correlated many-body systems. An abrupt change in the Fermi surface topology, also called Lifshitz transition, can lead to the emergence of fascinating phenomena like colossal magnetoresistance and superconductivity. While Lifshitz transitions have been demonstrated for a broad range of materials by equilibrium tuning of macroscopic parameters such as strain, doping, pressure and temperature, a non-equilibrium dynamical route toward ultrafast modification of the Fermi surface topology has not been experimentally demonstr…
We study the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in tilted multi-Weyl Semimetals (WSM) employing a two-band lattice model. We focus on the type-II phase of mWSMs, introduced by incorporating a Lorentz symmetry violating tilt term. We add to the understanding of the CME (and anomalous Hall effect) in the type-II phase of mWSMs and near the Lifshitz transition by varying tilt. Like the elementary WSM, our results also indicate that the Berry curvature drives the CME for higher monopole charges. We find a peak in the CME at the transition point and discuss its significance using the density of states. A…
The topological materials have attracted much attention recently. While three-dimensional topological insulators are becoming abundant, two-dimensional topological insulators remain rare, particularly in natural materials. ZrTe5 has host a long-standing puzzle on its anomalous transport properties; its underlying origin remains elusive. Lately, ZrTe5 has ignited renewed interest because it is predicted that single-layer ZrTe5 is a two-dimensional topological insulator and there is possibly a topological phase transition in bulk ZrTe5. However, the topological nature of ZrTe5 is under debate as…
We construct a phase diagram of the parent compound Fe1+xTe as a function of interstitial iron x in terms of the electronic, structural, and magnetic properties. For a concentration of x < 10%, Fe1+xTe undergoes a "semimetal" to metal transition at approximately 70 K that is also first-order and coincident with a structural transition from a tetragonal to a monoclinic unit cell. For x ~ 14%, Fe1+xTe undergoes a second-order phase transition at approximately 58 K corresponding to a "semimetal" to "semimetal" transition along with a structural orthorhombic distortion. At a critical concentration…
Motivated by recent experimental observation of an hydrostatic pressure induced transition from semiconductor to semimetal in black phosphorus [Chen et al. in arXiv:1504.00125], we present the first principles calculation on the pressure effect of the electronic structures of black phosphorus. It is found that the band crossover and reversal at the Z point occur around the critical pressure Pc1=1.23 Gpa, and the band inversion evolves into 4 twofold-degenerate Dirac cones around the Z point, suggesting a 3D Dirac semimetal. With further increasing pressure the Dirac cones in the Gamma-Z line m…
Weyl semimetals have been classified into type-I and type-II with respect to the geometry of their Fermi surfaces at the Weyl points. Here, we propose a new class of Weyl semimetal, whose unique Fermi surface contains two electron or two hole pockets touching at a multi-Weyl point, dubbed as type-III Weyl semimetal. Based on first-principles calculations, we first show that quasi-one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)2I is a type-III Weyl semimetal with larger chiral charges. (TaSe4)2I can support four-fold helicoidal surface states with remarkably long Fermi arcs on the (001) surface. Angle-resolve…
A van der Waals coupled Weyl semimetal material NbIrTe4 is investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first principles calculations. We observe a sharp peak in the tunneling conductance near the zero bias energy, and its origin is ascribed to a van Hove singularity associated with a Lifshitz transition of the topologically none trivial Fermi arc states. Furthermore, tunneling spectroscopy measurements show a surprisingly large signature of electron boson coupling, which presumably represents anomalously enhanced electron phonon coupling through the enhanced charge…
Lifshitz transition represents a sudden reconstruction of Fermi surface structure, giving rise to anomalies in electronic properties of materials. Such a transition does not necessarily rely on symmetry-breaking and thus is topological. It holds a key to understand the origin of many exotic quantum phenomena, for example the mechanism of extremely large magnetoresistance (MR) in topological Dirac/Weyl semimetals. Here, we report studies of the angle-dependent MR (ADMR) and the thermoelectric effect in W2As3 single crystal. The compound shows a large unsaturated MR (of about 70000% at 4.2 K and…
Weyl semimetal (WSM) feature tilted Dirac cones and can be type I or II depending on the magnitude of the tilt parameter ($C$). The boundary between the two types is at $C=1$ where the cones are tipped and there is a Lifshitz transition. The topological charge of a WSM is one. In multi-Weyl it can be two or more depending on the value of the winding number $J$. We calculate the absorptive part of the AC optical conductivity both along the tilt direction ($σ_{zz}$) and perpendicular to it ($σ_{xx}$) as a function of the tilt ($C$) and chemical potential ($μ$). For zero tilt there is a discontin…
While strong topological insulators (STI) have been experimentally realized soon after their theoretical predictions, a weak topological insulator (WTI) has yet to be unambiguously confirmed. A major obstacle is the lack of distinct natural cleavage surfaces to test the surface selective hallmark of WTI. With a new scheme, we discover that Bi$_{4}$X$_{4}$ (X=Br, I), stable or synthesized before, can be WTI with two natural cleavage surfaces, where two anisotropic Dirac cones stabilize and annihilate, respectively. We further find four surface state Lifshitz transitions under charge doping and …
In this paper, we study quantum phase transitions and magnetic properties of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Gamma model, which describes the off-diagonal exchange interactions between edge-shared octahedra with strong spin-orbit couplings along the sawtooth chain. The competing exchange interactions between the nearest neighbors and the second neighbors stabilize semimetallic ground state in terms of spinless fermions, and give rise to a rich phase diagram, which consists of three gapless phases. We find distinct phases are characterized by the number of Weyl nodes in the momentum space, and such …
Recently, anomalies in the temperature dependences of the carrier density and/or mobility derived from analysis of the magnetoresistivities using the conventional two-band model have been used to unveil intriguing temperature-induced Lifshitz transitions in various materials. For instance, two temperature-driven Lifshitz transitions were inferred to exist in the Dirac nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe, based on two-band model analysis of the Hall magnetoconductivities where the second band exhibits a change in the carrier type from holes to electrons when the temperature decreases below T = 106 K an…
Recent experiments on type-II Weyl semimetals such as WTe$_2$, MoTe$_2$, Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ and WP$_2$ reveal remarkable transport properties in presence of a strong magnetic field, including an extremely large magnetoresistance and an unusual temperature dependence. Here, we investigate magnetotransport via the Kubo formula in a minimal model of a type-II Weyl semimetal taking into account the effect of a charge density wave (CDW) transition, which can arise even at weak coupling in the presence of a strong magnetic field because of the special Landau level dispersion of type-II Weyl syste…
Negative magnetoresistance (NMR) induced by the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly is regarded as the most prominent quantum signature of Weyl semimetals when electrical field $E$ is collinear with the external magnetic field $B$. In this article, we report universal NMR in nonmagnetic, centrosymmetric transition metal dipnictides MPn$_{2}$ (M=Nb and Ta; Pn=As and Sb), in which the existence of Weyl fermions can be explicitly excluded. Using temperature-dependent magnetoresistance, Hall and thermoelectric coefficients of Nernst and Seebeck effects, we determine that the emergence of the NMR phenomena i…
We study the chiral vortical conductivity in a holographic Weyl semimetal model, which describes a topological phase transition from the strongly coupled topologically nontrivial phase to a trivial phase. We focus on the temperature dependence of the chiral vortical conductivity where the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly plays a crucial role. After a proper renormalization of the chiral vortical conductivity by the anomalous Hall conductivity and temperature squared, we find that at low temperature in both the Weyl semimetal phase and the quantum critical region this renormalized ratio stays …
It is commonly believed that a non-interacting disordered electronic system can undergo only the Anderson metal-insulator transition. It has been suggested, however, that a broad class of systems can display disorder-driven transitions distinct from Anderson localisation that have manifestations in the disorder-averaged density of states, conductivity and other observables. Such transitions have received particular attention in the context of recently discovered 3D Weyl and Dirac materials but have also been predicted in cold-atom systems with long-range interactions, quantum kicked rotors and…
We study the finite temperature and magnetic field phase diagram of electrons on the pyrochlore lattice subject to a local repulsion as a model for the pyrochlore iridates. We provide the most general symmetry-allowed Hamiltonian, including next-nearest neighbour hopping, and relate it to a Slater-Koster based Hamiltonian for the iridates. It captures Lifshitz and/or thermal transitions between several phases such as metals, semimetals, topological insulators and Weyl semimetals, and gapped antiferromagnets with different orders. Our results on the charge conductivity, both DC and optical, Hal…
We performed the angle dependent magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect measurements, the temperature dependent magneto-thermoelectric power (TEP) S(T) measurements, and the first-principles calculations to study the electronic properties of orthorhombic phase MoTe2 (Td-MoTe2), which was proposed to be electronically two-dimensional (2D). There are some interesting findings about Td-MoTe2: (1) A scaling approach εθ=(sin2θ+γ-2cos2θ)1/2 is applied, where θ is the magnetic field angle with respect to the c axis of the crystal and γ is the mass anisotropy. Unexpectedly, the electronically 3D characte…
Topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSMs) are materials whose conduction and valence bands cross each other, meeting a topologically-protected closed loop rather than discrete points in the Brillouin zone (BZ). The anticipated properties for TNLSMs include drumhead-like nearly flat surface states, unique Landau energy levels, special collective modes, long-range Coulomb interactions, or the possibility of realizing high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, SrAs3 has been theoretically proposed and then experimentally confirmed to be a TNLSM. Here, we report high-pressure experiments on Sr…
We report extremely large positive magnetoresistance of 1.72 million percent in single crystal TaSb$_{2}$ at moderate conditions of 1.5 K and 15 T. The quadratic growth of magnetoresistance (MR $\propto\,B^{1.96}$) is not saturating up to 15 T, a manifestation of nearly perfect compensation with $<0.1\%$ mismatch between electron and hole pockets in this semimetal. The compensation mechanism is confirmed by temperature-dependent MR, Hall and thermoelectric coefficients of Nernst and Seebeck, revealing two pronounced Fermi surface reconstruction processes without spontaneous symmetry breaking, …
Topologically non-trivial electronic structures can give rise to a range of unusual physical phenomena, and the interplay of band topology with other effects such as electronic correlations and magnetism requires further exploration. The rare earth monopnictides $X$(Sb,Bi) ($X$ = lanthanide) are a large family of semimetals where these different effects may be tuned by the substitution of rare-earth elements. Here we observe anomalous behavior in the quantum oscillations of one member of this family, antiferromagnetic SmSb. The analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations provides evidence…
Dirac states hosted by Sb/Bi square nets are known to exist in the layered antiferromagnetic AMnX$_2$ (A = Ca/Sr/Ba/Eu/Yb, X=Sb/Bi) material family the space group to be P4/nmm or I4/mmm. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of quantum transport behaviors, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations on SrZnSb2, a nonmagnetic analogue to AMnX2, which crystallizes in the pnma space group with distorted square nets. From the quantum oscillation measurements up to 35 T, three major frequencies including F$_1$ = 103 T, F$_2$ = 127 T and F$_3$ = 160…

The nature of the interaction between magnetism and topology in magnetic topological semimetals remains mysterious, but may be expected to lead to a variety of novel physics. We present $ab$ $initio$ band calculations, electrical transport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on the magnetic semimetal EuAs$_3$, demonstrating a magnetism-induced topological transition from a topological nodal-line semimetal in the paramagnetic or the spin-polarized state to a topological massive Dirac metal in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state at low temperature, featuring a…
We propose the c-function as a new and accurate probe to detect the location of topological quantum critical points. As a direct application, we consider a holographic model which exhibits a topological quantum phase transition between a topologically trivial insulating phase and a gapless Weyl semimetal. The quantum critical point displays a strong Lifshitz-like anisotropy in the spatial directions and the quantum phase transition does not follow the standard Landau paradigm. The c-function robustly shows a global feature at the quantum criticality and distinguishes with great accuracy the tw…
The honeycomb Kitaev spin model provides a quantum spin liquid in the ground state, where the spin excitations are fractionalized into itinerant and localized Majorana fermions; the former spectrum has a broad continuum ranging up to a high energy, while the latter has a sharp peak at a low energy. Despite tremendous efforts, it remains elusive to clearly identify these distinct Majorana excitations in experiments. Here we show their manifestation in the time evolution after quenching the magnetic field, by using the time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory for both the ferromagnetic and anti…
A grand challenge underlies the entire field of topology-enabled quantum logic and information science: how to establish topological control principles driven by quantum coherence and understand the time-dependence of such periodic driving? Here we demonstrate a THz pulse-induced phase transition in Dirac materials that is periodically driven by vibrational coherence due to excitation of the lowest Raman-active mode. Above a critical field threshold, there emerges a long-lived metastable phase with unique Raman coherent phonon-assisted switching dynamics, absent for optical pumping. The switch…
The gapless Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) quasiparticles of a clean three dimensional spinless $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor provide an intriguing example of a thermal Hall semimetal (ThSM) phase of Majorana-Weyl fermions in class D of the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classification; such a phase can support a large anomalous thermal Hall conductivity and protected surface Majorana-Fermi arcs at zero energy. We study the effect of quenched disorder on such a topological phase with both numerical and analytical methods. Using the kernel polynomial method, we compute the average and typical density of st…
