We report experimental generation and manipulation of optical tornado waves (ToWs). By controlling the self-focusing length, total angular momentum, and foci deviation of ToWs, the propagation properties of optical ToWs, especially their angular velocity of the main intensity lobes, can be manipulated. We achieve controlling the accumulated rotation angle of the intensity lobes from 0 to 1100 degrees. Also, we confirm that ToWs get the highest angular velocity around the foci coincide situation. Our experimental results are in good agreement with numerical results.
In this study, we demonstrate the concept of combining optical combs with optical vortices for the first time. This idea corresponds to simultaneous control of the longitudinal and transverse modes of light based on the high controllability of the optical comb. As a proof-of-concept experiment, we applied an optical vortex comb to the generation and rotational control of a ring-shaped optical lattice. Furthermore, to demonstrate the utility of thi…

This intrinsic superior stability is expected to improve profoundly a wide range of bio-photonic applications that rely on the optical manipulation of micrometric objects while studying single-molecule mechanics and sub-cellular scale tran…
Increasing demand for practical applications is forcing deeper research into optical vortices (OVs): from the generation and measurement to shaping and multiple singularities manipulation of OVs. Herein, we propose a new type of phase structure called the high-order cross phase (HOCP) can be employed to modulate OVs to implement both polygonal shaping and singularities manipulation. Theoretically, we investigate the propagation characteristics of OVs with the HOCP. In experiments, we achieve the shaping and singularities manipulation of OVs by utilizing the HOCP. We demonstrate optical trapping and manipulation of defects and transparent microspheres in nematic liquid crystals (LCs). The three-dimensional director fields and positions of the particles are visualized using the Fluorescence Confocal Polarizing Microscopy. We show that the disclinations can be manipulated by either using optically trapped colloidal particles or directly by tightly-focused laser beams. We employ this effect to measure the line tensions of disclinations.
Small composite objects, known as Janus particles, drive sustained scientific interest primarily targeted at biomedical applications, where such objects act as micro- or nanoscale actuators, carriers, or imaging agents. The major practical challenge is to develop effective methods for manipulation of Janus particles. The available long-range methods mostly rely on chemical reactions or thermal gradients, therefore having mediocre precision and strong dependency on the content and properties of the carrier fluid. To tackle these limitations, we propose the manipulation of Janus particles (here,…
Optical nanofiber cavity research has mainly focused on the fundamental mode. Here, a Fabry-Pérot fiber cavity with an optical nanofiber supporting the higher-order modes, TE01, TM01, HE21o, and HE21e, is demonstrated. Using cavity spectroscopy, with mode imaging and analysis, we observe cavity resonances that exhibit complex, inhomogeneous states of polarization with topological features containing Stokes singularities such as C-points, Poincaré vortices, and L-lines. In situ tuning of the intracavity birefringence enables the desired profile and polarization of the cavity mode to be obtained…
We study light-beam propagation in a nonlinear coupler with an asymmetric double-channel waveguide and derive various analytical forms of optical modes. The results show that the symmetry-preserving modes in a symmetric double-channel waveguide are deformed due to the asymmetry of the two-channel waveguide, yet such a coupler supports the symmetry-breaking modes. The dispersion relations reveal that the system with self-focusing nonlinear response supports the degenerate modes, while for self-defocusingmedium the degenerate modes do not exist. Furthermore, nonlinear manipulation is investigate…

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is a promising system since its photoluminescence is perfectly stable at room temperature and its electron spin can be optically read-out at the individual level. We review here the experiments currently realized in our laboratory, concerning the use of single NV color center as single photon source and the coherent magnetic manipulation of the electron spin associated to a single NV color center. Optical micro-manipulation and trapping of micro-particles delivers a mechanical system in direct interaction with a beam of light. In this interaction, the optical properties such as polarisation, beam profile and wavelength of the trapping beam are important. Different beams are associated with different momentum transfer, trap stiffness and stabilisation properties, for example. One method to determine the best beam profile is through the use of the optical eigenmode approach. To use this method, we employ Mie scattering theory which enables the exact determination of the scattered field as…

We investigate the spatial and quantum intensity correlations between the probe and Stokes optical fields produced via four-wave mixing in a double-Λ configuration, when both incoming probe and control fields carry non-zero optical orbital angular momentum (OAM). We observed that the topological charge of the generated Stokes field obeyed the OAM conservation law. However, the maximum values and optimal conditions for the intensity squeezing between the probe and Stokes fields were largely independent of the angular momenta of the beams, even when these two fields had significantly different O…
Integration of complex photonic structures onto optical fiber facets enables powerful platforms with unprecedented optical functionalities. Conventional nanofabrication technologies, however, do not permit viable integration of complex photonic devices onto optical fibers owing to their low throughput and high cost. In this paper we report the fabrication of a three dimensional structure achieved by direct Nanoimprint Lithography on the facet of an optical fiber. Nanoimprint processes and tools were specifically developed to enable a high lithographic accuracy and coaxial alignment of the opti…

Metasurfaces, composed of subwavelength scattering elements, have demonstrated remarkable control over the transmitted amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. However, manipulating the amplitude upon transmission has required loss if a single metasurface is used. Here, we describe high-efficiency independent manipulation of the amplitude and phase of a beam using two lossless phase-only metasurfaces separated by a distance. With this configuration, we experimentally demonstrate optical components such as combined beam-forming and splitting devices, as well as those for forming complex-val…

Optical forces in the near fields have important applications in on-chip optical manipulations of small particles and molecules. Here, we report a study of optical force and torque on small particles induced by the optical polarization singularities of a gold cylinder. We show that the scattering of the cylinder generates both electric and magnetic C lines (i.e., lines of polarization singularities) in the near fields, and the C lines can induce complex force and torque on a dielectric/magnetic particle. The force and torque manifest dramatic spatial variations with interesting symmetry proper…
We show that a metasurface-coated two-dimensional (2D) slab waveguide enables the generation of arbitrary complex light fields by combining the extreme versatility and freedom on wavefront control of optical metasurfaces with the compactness of photonic integrated circuits. We demonstrated off-chip 2D focusing and holographic projection with our metasurface-dressed photonic integrated devices. This technology holds the potential for many other optical applications requiring 2D light field manipulation with full on-chip integration, such as solid-state LiDAR and near-eye AR/VR displays.

We put forward an enantioselective method for chiral nanoparticles using optical tweezers. We demonstrate that the optical trapping force in a typical, realistic optical tweezing setup with circularly-polarized trapping beams is sensitive to the chirality of core-shell nanoparticles, allowing for efficient enantioselection. It turns out that the handedness of the trapped particles can be selected by choosing the appropriate circular polarization of the trapping beam. The chirality of each individual trapped nanoparticle can be characterized by measuring the rotation of the equilibrium position…
Individual colloidal quantum dots can be optically trapped and manipulated by a single infrared laser beam operated at low laser powers. If the absorption spectrum and the emission wavelength of the trapping laser are appropriately chosen, the trapping laser light can act as a source for two-photon excitation of the trapped quantum dot. This eliminates the need for an additional excitation laser in experiments where individual quantum dots are used both as force transducers and for visualization of the system. To use quantum dots as handles for quantitative optical force transduction, it is cr…
We show that the optical properties of an oblique layered system with two kinds of isotropic materials can be described using the concept of transformation media as long as the thickness of the layers is much smaller than the wavelength. Once the connection with transformation media is established, we then show that oblique layered system can serve as a universal element to build a variety of interesting functional optical components such as wave splitters, wave combiners, one-dimensional cloaking devices and reflectionless field rotators.
Vector beams (VBs) are widely investigated for its special intensity and polarization distributions, which is useful for optical micromanipulation, optical micro-fabrication, optical communication, and single molecule imaging. We successfully trap two spherical microparticles simultaneously by a single vortex-pair beam. Precisely position-controllable manipulation of the trapped spherical microparticles is realized by adjusting the off-axis distance of the vortices on the initial phase plane of the vortex-pair beam. Based on the feature of the vortex-pair beam,…
Dynamic control of compact chip-scale contactless manipulation of particles for bioscience applications remains a challenging endeavor, which is restrained by the balance between trapping efficiency and scalable apparatus. In this Letter we show how a single beam optical trap offers the means for three-dimensional manipulation of semiconductor nanorods in solution. Furthermore rotation of the direction of the electric field provides control over the orientation of the nanorods, which is shown by polarisation analysis of two photon induced fluorescence. Statistics over tens of trapped agglomerates reveal a correlation between the measured degree of polarisation, the trap stiffness and the intensity of the emitted light, confirming that we are approaching the single particle limit.

Its depth, stiffness and location of potential wells can be dynamically controlled. Moreover, the controllable transport of nanoparticle is experimentally demonstrated, which reveals that it exhibits…
We propose a novel way to trap and manipulate nano-objects above a dielectric substrate using an apertureless near-field probe. A combination of evanescent illumination and light scattering at the probe apex is used to shape the optical field into a localized, three dimensional optical trap. We use the coupled-dipole method and the Maxwell stress tensor to provide a self-consistent description of the optical force, including retardation and the influence of the substrate. We show that small objects can be selectively captured and manipulated under realistic conditions.

We generate a superposition of fundamental and first order Hermite-Gaussian beam modes by the simple innovation of coupling a laser into a commercial optical fiber designed to be single mode for a wavelength higher than that of the laser. We achieve robust trapping of the absorbing particles for hours using both the pure fundamental and superposition mode beams and attain large manipulation velocitie…
A class of chalcogenide alloy materials that shows significant changes in optical properties upon an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transition has lead to development of large data capacities in modern optical data storage. Among chalcogenide phase-change materials, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) is most widely used because of its reliability. We use a pair of femtosecond light pulses to demonstrate the ultrafast optical manipulation of atomic arrangements from tetrahedral (amorphous) to octahedral (crystalline) Ge-coordination in GST superlattices. Depending on the parameters of the second pump-pulse, ultra…

A tunable transition between standing wave mode and travelling wave mode is also observed. Underlying physics is discussed by developing a two-scatterer model which can be extended to multiple scatterers. Observed rich dynamics and tunability of split modes in a single microresonator will …
We show that a cooperative atom response in an optical lattice to resonant incident light can be employed for precise control and manipulation of light on a subwavelength scale. Specific collective excitation modes of the system that result from strong light-mediated dipole-dipole interactions can be addressed by tailoring the spatial phase-profile of the incident light. We demonstrate how the collective response can be used to produce optical excitations at well-isolated sites on the lattice.
Optical vortices host the orbital nature of photons, which offers an extra degree of freedom in photonic applications. Subsequently, the electron spin state dynamics of adjacent NV centers were selectively detected via the CSD. The experimental results demonstrated that th…
To manipulate orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by light beams, there is a great interest in designing various optical elements from the deep-ultraviolet to the microwave. Normally, the OAM variation introduced by optical elements can be attributed to two terms, namely the dynamic and geometric phases. Up till now, the dynamic contribution induced by optical elements has been clearly recognized. However, the contribution of geometric phase still seems obscure, especially considering the vector vortex beams. In this work, an analytical formula is derived to fully describe the OAM variation…
