In a recent experiment, the out-of-plane surface susceptibility of a single-layer two-dimensional atom crystal in the visible spectrum has been measured. This susceptibility gives a measurable contribution to the reflectivity of two-dimensional materials. Here we provide a complete theoretical description of the reflective properties, considering incoming s and p polarized plane waves at any angle of incidence on the crystal, computing local, reflected and transmitted electromagnetic fields. We finally connect the microscopic polarizability to both the in-plane and the out-of-plane macroscopic surface susceptibilities.
We consider a semi-infinite dielectric with multiple spatially dispersive resonances in the susceptibility. The effect of the boundary is described by an arbitrary reflection coefficient for polarization waves in the material at the surface, with specific values corresponding to various additional boundary conditions (ABCs) for Maxwell's equations. We derive exact expressions for the electromagnetic reflection and transmission coefficients and present the results for a variety of materials with multiple exciton bands. We find an improved single-band approximation for heavy/light exciton bands …
This work investigates acoustic wave transmission property through a zero index metamaterials (ZIM) waveguide embedded with a general solid defect. Total transmission and total reflection can be achieved by adjusting the parameters of the solid defect. We comprehensively study how longitudinal/transverse wave speeds of the solid defect affect the acoustic wave propagation through the waveguide. A two-dimensional (2D) acoustic crystals (ACs) system with zero index is used to realize these intriguing transmission properties. Thus, our work provides more possibilities to manipulate acoustic wave …
For transmissive applications of electromagnetic metasurfaces, an array of subwavelength Huygens' metaatoms are typically used to eliminate reflection and achieve a high transmission power efficiency together with a wide transmission phase coverage. We show that the underlying principle of low reflection and full control over transmission is asymmetric scattering into the specular reflection and transmission directions that results from a superposition of symmetric and anti-symmetric scattering components, with Huygens' meta-atoms being one example configuration. Available for oblique illumina…
Phase-space procedure based on coherent state representation is proposed for investigation of reflection and transmission of light beams at a curved dielectric boundary. Numerical simulations of reflection and transmission of light at various boundaries separating two different dielectrics are carried out. Significant influence of wave-front curvature and polarization of incident beam on the reflectance and transmittance is shown.
A theory of light reflection and transmission by an optically thin nanocomposite slab which contains randomly distributed metal nanoparticles (NPs) is developed. The underlying model takes into account the reflection of light scattered by NPs from the slab boundaries, enhanced decay of localized surface plasmons in dense NP arrays and light scattering at the slab surface -- the factors which are beyond the scope of the Maxwell Garnett approximation. It is demonstrated that the first two effects lead to broadband perfect absorption observed in such nanocomposites, whereas the last one is respon…
The reflection and transmission amplitudes of waves in disordered multimode waveguides are studied by means of numerical simulations based on the invariant embedding equations. In particular, we analyze the influence of surface-type disorder on the behavior of the ensemble average and fluctuations of the reflection and transmission coefficients, reflectance, transmittance, and conductance. Our results show anomalous effects stemming from the combination of mode dispersion and rough surface scattering: For a given waveguide length, the larger the mode transverse momentum is, the more strongly i…
Using the transfer-matrix approach and solving time-domain differential equations, we analyze the loss compensation mechanism in multilayer systems composed of an absorbing transparent conductive oxide and dielectric doped with an active material. We reveal also another regime with the possibility of enhanced transmission with suppressed reflection originating from the resonant properties of the multilayers. For obliquely incident and evanescent waves, such enhanced transmission under suppressed reflection turns into the reflectionless regime, which is similar to that observed in the PT-symmet…
Motivated by the realization of the Dirac point (DP) with a double-cone structure for optical field in the negative-zero-positive index metamaterial (NZPIM), the reflection, transmission, and Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts inside the NZPIM slab are investigated. Due to the linear Dirac dispersion, the transmission as the function of the frequency has a gap, thus the correspond reflection has a frequency or wavelength window for the perfect reflection, which is similar to the Bragg reflection in the one-dimensional photonic crystals. Near the DP, the associated GH shifts in the transmission and refle…
Unidirectional reflectionless propagation (or transmission) is an interesting wave phenomenon observed in many $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric optical structures. Theoretical studies on unidirectional reflectionless transmission often use simple coupled-mode models. The coupled-mode theory can reveal the most important physical mechanism for this wave phenomenon, but it is only an approximate theory, and it does not provide accurate quantitative predictions with respect to geometric and material parameters of the structure. In this paper, we rigorously study unidirectional reflectionless transmission…
Nanowires show a large potential for various electrooptical devices, such as light emitting diodes, solar cells and nanowire lasers. We present a direct method developed to calculate the modal reflection and transmission matrix at the end facets of a waveguide of arbitrary cross section, resulting in a generalized version of the Fresnel equations. The reflection can be conveniently computed using Fast Fourier Transforms. We demonstrate that the reflection is qualitatively described by two main parameters, the modal field confinement and the average Fresnel reflection of the plane waves constit…
In this work, we investigate wave transmission through an epsilon-near-zero metamaterial waveguide embedded with defects. We show that by adjusting the geometric sizes and material properties of the defects, total reflection and even transmission can be obtained, despite the impedance mismatch of epsilon-near-zero material with free space. Our work can greatly simplify the design of zero-index material waveguide applications by removing the dependence on permeability.
For lossless periodic structures with a proper symmetry, the transmission and reflection spectra often have peaks and dips that are truly $100\%$ and $0\%$, respectively. The full peaks and zero dips typically appear near resonant frequencies, and they are robust with respect to structural perturbations that preserve the required symmetry. However, current theories on the existence of full peaks and zero dips are incomplete and difficult to use. For periodic structures with a bound state in the continuum (BIC), we present a new theory on the existence of real transmission and reflection zeros …
Analytic and passivity properties of reflection and transmission coefficients of thin-film multilayered stacks are investigated. Using a rigorous formalism based on the inverse Helmholtz operator, properties associated to causality principle and passivity are established when both temporal frequency and spatial wavevector are continued in the complex plane. This result extends the range of situations where the Kramers-Kronig relations can be used to deduce the phase from the intensity. In particular, it is rigorously shown that Kramers-Kronig relations for reflection and transmission coefficie…
In this report, we achieved total transmission and reflection in a slab of zero index materials with defect(s). By controlling the defect's radius and dielectric constant, we can obtain total transmission and reflection of EM wave. The zero index materials, in this report, stand for materials with permittivity and permeability which are simultaneously equal to zero or so called matched impedance zero index materials. Along with theoretical calculations and simulation demonstrations, we also discuss about some possible applications for the proposed structure such as shielding or cloaking an obj…
Graded index media whose electric susceptibility satisfies the spatial Kramers-Kronig relations are known to be one-way reflectionless to electromagnetic radiation, for all angles of incidence. We demonstrate how a family of these media, in addition to being reflectionless, also have negligible transmission. To this end, we discuss how the transmission coefficient for the propagation of waves through a medium whose permittivity is built from poles in the complex position plane, with residues that sum to infinity, can be controlled by tuning the positions and residues of the poles. In particula…
A compact reflection-type phaser composed of quarter-wavelength transmission line resonators interconnected by alternating K- and J-inverters is proposed. A design method is also presented. To validate this method, a 4th-order example is designed and fabricated. The proposed phaser is shown to exhibit the benefits of smaller size, easier fabrication and suppressed even-order harmonics compared with previously reported half-wavelength phasers.
We report that normal incidence reflection and transmission of circularly polarized electromagnetic waves from and through planar split-ring metamaterials with chiral symmetry breaking depends on the incidence direction and handedness of circular polarization. The effect has a resonant nature and is linked to the lack of mirror-symmetry in the metamaterial pattern leading to a polarization-sensitive excitation of electric and magnetic dipolar responses in the meta-molecules.
We report the design of nonreciprocal resonant transmission/reflection using a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) adjacent to the magneto-optical (MO) metal film. The nonreciprocal surface modes are found at the interface between the PC and MO metal within the forbidden band of native PC structure. Breaking time-reversal symmetry using external magnetic field gives rise of such unique nonreciprocal properties. Quantitatively understanding of nonreciprocal resonant optical transmission/reflection behavior is performed using an effective admittance-matching theory. With excitation of the no…
A linear scattering problem for which incoming and outgoing waves are restricted to a finite number of radiation channels can be precisely described by a frequency-dependent scattering matrix. The entries of the scattering matrix, as functions of the frequency, give rise to the transmission and reflection spectra. To find the scattering matrix rigorously, it is necessary to solve numerically the partial differential equations governing the relevant waves. In this paper, we consider resonant structures with an isolated nondegenerate resonant mode of complex frequency $ω_\star$, and show that fo…
The electromagnetic properties of an extremely thin metallic checkerboard drastically change from resonant reflection (transmission) to resonant transmission (reflection) when the local electrical conductivity at the interconnection points of the checkerboard is switched. To date, such critical transitions of metasurfaces have been applied only when they have 4-fold rotational symmetry, and their application to polarization control, which requires anisotropy, has been unexplored. To overcome this applicability limitation and open up new pathways for dynamic deep-subwavelength polarization cont…
The optical transmission and reflection in between two metalized optical fiber tips is studied in the optical near-field and far-field domains. Besides aluminum-coated tips for near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM), specifically developed gold-coated fiber tips cut by focused ion beam (FIB) are investigated. Transverse transmission maps of sub-wavelength width clearly evidence optical near-field coupling between the tips for short tip distances and becomes essentially Gaussian-shaped for larger distances in the far-field regime. Moreover concentric reflection fringes observed for NSOM-…
The universal bimodal distribution of transmission eigenvalues in lossless diffusive systems un- derpins such celebrated phenomena as universal conductance fluctuations, quantum shot noise in condensed matter physics and enhanced transmission in optics and acoustics. Here, we show that in the presence of absorption, density of the transmission eigenvalues depends on the confinement geometry of scattering media. Furthermore, in an asymmetric waveguide, densities of the reflection and absorption eigenvalues also depend of the side from which the waves are incident. With increas- ing absorpotion,…
A comparative study of unloaded Q-factor measurements of a TE011 mode sapphire dielectric resonator with unloaded Q-factor value of 731,000 at a frequency of 10 GHz and temperature of 65 K using two best Q-factor measurement methods are presented. The Transmission (TMQF) and Reflection methods are based on relevant multi-frequency S-parameter measurements and circle fitting procedures to compute the unloaded Q-factor of the resonator. For accurate comparison of the methods a delay compensation procedure (introduced in the TMQF technique to remove delay due to non-calibrated cables) has been ap…
In the present paper we investigate the transmission and reflection band behavior for a plane electromagnetic wave falling obliquely on an ideal layered structure. The dependence of this behavior on the problem parameters and wave incident angle is considered. It is shown, that in general case the band width is a non-monotonous function of the problem parameters. A condition is found, which defines the possibility of the contact of the transmission bands. This condition has the same form for s and p waves. It is also shown that irrespective of the wave polarization, the transmission coefficien…
Very weak left/right asymmetry in reflection and transmission is offered by a layer of a topological insulator on top of a layer of an anisotropic dielectric material, but it can be enhanced very significantly by using a periodic multilayer of both types of materials. This is an attractive prospect for realizing one-way terahertz devices, because both types of materials can be grown using standard physical-vapor-deposition techniques.
We investigate the interaction of tightly focused light with the surface-plasmon-polariton resonances of metal nanospheres. In particular, we compute the scattering and absorption ratios as well as transmission and reflection coefficients. Inspired by our previous work in Ref. [1], we discuss how well a metal nanoparticle approximates a point-like dipolar radiator. We find that a 100 nm silver nanosphere is very close to such an ideal oscillator. Our results have immediate implications for single nanoparticle spectroscopy and microscopy as well as plasmonics.
Under the sub-wavelength condition ($w<λ/2$), an analytical model of light transmission and reflection through $1$D metallo-dielectric gratings of real metals has been developed. It has been shown that the transmission intensity associated with the Fabry-Perot (FP) resonance of a $1$D metallo-dielectric grating of a real metal decreases with the increasing grating thickness and the dielectric constant of the ridge material. Further, it has also been demonstrated that the intensity of the FP resonance increases with the increasing slit width while it is independent of the grating period ($P$) a…
Relating the electromagnetic scattering and absorption properties of an individual particle to the reflection and transmission coefficients of a two-dimensional material composed of these particles is a crucial concept that has driven both fundamental and applied physics. It is at the heart of both the characterization of material properties as well as the phase and amplitude engineering of a wave. Here we propose a multipolar description of the reflection and transmission coefficients across a monolayer of particles using a vector spherical harmonic decomposition. This enables us to provide a…
We show that a physical mechanism responsible for the enhanced transmission and reflection of femtosecond pulses by a single subwavelength nanoslit in a thick metallic film is the Fabry-Perot-like resonant excitation of stationary, quasistationary and nonstationary waves inside the slit, which leads to the field enhancement inside and around the slit. The mechanism is universal for any pulse-scatter system, which supports the stationary resonances. We point out that there is a pulse duration limit below which the slit does not support the intraslit resonance.
The Raman gain of a probe light in a three-state $Λ$-scheme placed into a defect of a one-dimensional photonic crystal is studied theoretically. We show that there exists a pump intensity range, where the transmission and reflection spectra of the probe field exhibit \textit{simultaneously} occurring narrow peaks (resonances) whose position is determined by the Raman resonance. Transmission and reflection coefficients can be larger than unity at pump intensities of order tens of $μ$W/cm$^{2}$. When the pump intensity is outside this region, the peak in the transmission spectrum turns into a na…
We identify the poles and zeros of the scattering matrix of a simple quantum graph by means of systematic measurement and analysis of Wigner, transmission, and reflection complex time delays. We examine the ring graph because it displays both shape and Feshbach resonances, the latter of which arises from an embedded eigenstate on the real frequency axis. Our analysis provides a unified understanding of the so-called shape, Feshbach, electromagnetically-induced transparency, and Fano resonances, on the basis of the distribution of poles and zeros of the scattering matrix in the complex frequenc…
Thirty years ago, theorists showed that a properly designed combination of incident waves could be fully transmitted through (or reflected by) a disordered medium, based on the existence of propagation channels which are essentially either closed or open (bimodal law). In this Letter, we study elastic waves in a disordered waveguide and present direct experimental evidence of the bimodal law. Full transmission and reflection are achieved. The wave field is monitored by laser interferometry and highlights the interference effects that take place within the scattering medium.
The impact of surface reflection upon transmission through and energy distributions within random media has generally been described in terms of the boundary extrapolation lengths $z_b, z_b'$ at the input and output end of an open sample, which are the distance beyond the sample surfaces at which the energy density within the sample extrapolates to zeroThe importance of reflection at the sample boundaries plays a key role in the scaling of transmission. Here we consider the impact of surface reflection on the propagation of diffusive waves in terms of the modification of the distribution of tr…

Exerting well-defined control over the reflection $(R)$, absorption $(A)$, and transmission $(T)$ of electromagnetic waves is a key objective in quantum optics. To this end, one often utilizes hybrid structures comprised of elements with different optical properties in order to achieve features such as high $R$ or high $A$ for incident light. A desirable goal would be the possibility to tune between all three regimes of nearly perfect reflection, absorption, and transmission within the same device, thus swapping between the cases $R\to 1$, $A\to1$, and $T\to1$ dynamically. We here show that a …
We theoretically study the interactions between plasmonic and photonic modes within a structure that is composed of two thin corrugated metallic plates, embedded in air. We show that the interactions depend upon the symmetry of the interacting modes. This observation is explained by the phase difference between the Fourier components of the two gratings. The phase can be controlled by laterally shifting one grating with respect to the other. Therefore, this relative shift provides an efficient "knob" that allows to control the interaction between the various modes, resulting in an efficient mo…
A high Radio Analog Signal Processing (R-ASP) resolution transmission-type (TT) phaser based on reflection-type (RT) phaser units is introduced, theoretically studied and experimentally demonstrated. It is first shown that RT phasers inherently exhibit higher R-ASP resolution than their TT counterparts because their group delay swing is proportional to the reflection coefficient associated with a resonator coupling mechanism (admittance inverter), easy to maximize towards unity, rather than to a coupled-line coupling coefficient, typically restricted to values will inferior to unity, as in the…
Transmission eigenchannels and associated eigenvalues, that give a full account of wave propagation in random media, have recently emerged as a major theme in theoretical and applied optics. Here we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that in quasi one-dimensional ($1$D) diffusive samples, their behavior is governed mostly by the asymmetry in the reflections of the sample edges rather than by the absolute values of the reflection coefficients themselves. We show that there exists a threshold value of the asymmetry parameter, below which high transmission eigenchannels exist, giving…
A linear-to-circular polarization converter with half transmission and half reflection using a single-layered metamaterial is theoretically and numerically demonstrated. The unit cell of the metamaterial consists of two coupled split-ring resonators with identical dimensions. A theoretical analysis based on an electrical circuit model of the coupled split-ring resonators indicates that the linear-to-circular polarization converter is achieved when the magnetic coupling between the split-ring resonators is set to a certain strength. A finite-difference time-domain simulation reveals that the si…

We consider a semi-infinite spatially dispersive dielectric with unequal transverse and longitudinal susceptibilities. The effect of the boundary is characterized by arbitrary reflection coefficients for polarization waves in the material that propagate to the surface. Specific values of these coefficients correspond to various additional boundary conditions (ABC) for Maxwell's equations. We derive the electromagnetic reflection and transmission coefficients at the boundary and investigate their dependence on material parameters and ABC. We also investigate the electromagnetic zero-point and t…

A theoretical study of the resonance optical response of assemblies of oriented short (as compared to an optical wavelength) linear Frenkel chains is carried out using a two-level model. We show that both transmittivity and reflectivity of the film may behave in a bistable fashion and analyze how the effects found depend on the film thickness and on the inhomogeneous width of the exciton optical transition.
While the absorption of light is ubiquitous in nature and in applications, the question remains how absorption modifies the transmission channels in random media. We present a numerical study on the effects of optical absorption on the maximal transmission and minimal reflection channels in a two-dimensional disordered waveguide. In the weak absorption regime, where the system length is less than the diffusive absorption length, the maximal transmission channel is dominated by diffusive transport and it is equivalent to the minimal reflection channel. Its frequency bandwidth is determined by t…
To study the dynamical optical interactions of nano-scaled metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures in temporal-frequency domain, femtosecond surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wave packets propagate over a surface with a MIM structure. The resonance nature of the SPP-cavity interaction is reflected as strong modulations in the spectra of transmitted and reflected SPP wavepackets, which show peaks and valleys, respectively, corresponding to the MIM cavity's eigenmode. These features indicate that the MIM structure acts as a Fabry-Perot etalon-type spectrum filter. With appropriate tuning of the res…
Scattering often limits the controlled delivery of light in applications such as biomedical imaging, optogenetics, optical trapping, and fiber-optic communication or imaging. Such scattering can be controlled by appropriately shaping the light wavefront entering the material. Here, we demonstrate a machine-learning approach for light control. Using pairs of binary intensity patterns and intensity measurements we train neural networks (NNs) to provide the wavefront corrections necessary to shape the beam after the scatterer. Additionally, we demonstrate that NNs can be used to find a functional…
