Motivated by an influential result of Bourgain and Tzafriri, we consider continuous matrix functions $A:\mathbb{R}\to M_{n\times n}$ and lower $\ell_2$-norm bounds associated with their restriction to certain subspaces. We prove that for any such $A$ with unit-length columns, there exists a continuous choice of subspaces $t\mapsto U(t)\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ such that for $v\in U(t)$, $\|A(t)v\|\geq c\|v\|$ where $c$ is some universal constant. Furthermore, the $U(t)$ are chosen so that their dimension satisfies a lower bound with optimal asymptotic dependence on $n$ and $\sup_{t\in \mathbb{R}}\|A(t)\|.$ We provide two methods. The first relies on an orthogonality argument, while the second is probabilistic and combinatorial in nature. The latter does not yield the optimal bound for $\dim(U(t))$ but the $U(t)$ obtained in this way are guaranteed to have a canonical representation as joined-together spaces spanned by subsets of the unit vector basis.
We recently formulated important Modular Bourgain-Tzafriri Restricted Invertibility Conjectures and Modular Johnson-Lindenstrauss Flattening Conjecture in the Appendix of \textit{[arXiv: 2207.12799.v1]}. For the sake of wide accessibility we give a self-contained treatment of them.
We give an elementary proof of a generalization of Bourgain and Tzafriri's Restricted Invertibility Theorem, which says roughly that any matrix with columns of unit length and bounded operator norm has a large coordinate subspace on which it is well-invertible. Our proof gives the tightest known form of this result, is constructive, and provides a deterministic polynomial time algorithm for finding the desired subspace.
We use the method of interlacing families of polynomials to derive a simple proof of Bourgain and Tzafriri's Restricted Invertibility Principle, and then to sharpen the result in two ways. We show that the stable rank can be replaced by the Schatten 4-norm stable rank and that tighter bounds hold when the number of columns in the matrix under consideration does not greatly exceed its number of rows. Our bounds are derived from an analysis of smallest zeros of Jacobi and associated Laguerre polynomials.
We prove a normalized version of the restricted invertibility principle obtained by Spielman-Srivastava. Applying this result, we get a new proof of the proportional Dvoretzky-Rogers factorization theorem recovering the best current estimate. As a consequence, we also recover the best known estimate for the Banach-Mazur distance to the cube: the distance of every n-dimensional normed space from \ell_{\infty}^n is at most (2n)^(5/6). Finally, using tools from the work of Batson-Spielman-Srivastava, we give a new proof for a theorem of Kashin-Tzafriri on the norm of restricted matrices.
The restricted invertibility theorem was originally introduced by Bourgain and Tzafriri in $1987$ and has been considered as one of the most celebrated theorems in geometry and analysis. In this note, we present weighted versions of this theorem with slightly better estimates. Particularly, we show that for any $A\in\mathbb{R}^{n\times m}$ and $k,r\in\mathbb{N}$ with $k\leq r\leq \mbox{rank}(A)$, there exists a subset $\mathcal{S}$ of size $k$ such that $σ_{\min}(A_{\mathcal{S}}W_{\mathcal{S}})^2\geq \frac{(\sqrt{r}-\sqrt{k-1})^2}{\|W^{-1}\|_F^{2}}\cdot\frac{r}{\sum_{i=1}^{r}σ_{i}(A)^{-2}}$, w…
The 1987 Bourgain-Tzafriri Restricted Invertibility Theorem is one of the most celebrated theorems in analysis. At the time of their work, the authors raised the question of a possible infinite dimensional version of the theorem. In this paper, we will give a quite general definition of restricted invertibility for operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces based on the notion of "density" from frame theory. We then prove that localized Bessel systems have large subsets which are Riesz basic sequences. As a consequence, we prove the strongest possible form of the infinite dimensional res…
In this paper we study the concept of multipliers for continuous $g$-Bessel families in Hilbert spaces. We present necessary conditions for invertibility of multipliers for continuous $g$-Bessel families and sufficient conditions for invertibility of multipliers for continuous $g$-frames.
The Restricted Invertibility problem is the problem of selecting the largest subset of columns of a given matrix $X$, while keeping the smallest singular value of the extracted submatrix above a certain threshold. In this paper, we address this problem in the simpler case where $X$ is a random matrix but with the additional constraint that the selected columns be almost orthogonal to a given vector $v$. Our main result is a lower bound on the number of columns we can extract from a normalized i.i.d. Gaussian matrix for the worst $v$.
Suppose that $m,n\in \mathbb{N}$ and that $A:\mathbb{R}^m\to \mathbb{R}^n$ is a linear operator. It is shown here that if $k,r\in \mathbb{N}$ satisfy $k<r\le \mathrm{\bf rank(A)}$ then there exists a subset $σ\subseteq \{1,\ldots,m\}$ with $|σ|=k$ such that the restriction of $A$ to $\mathbb{R}^σ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^m$ is invertible, and moreover the operator norm of the inverse $A^{-1}:A(\mathbb{R}^σ)\to \mathbb{R}^m$ is at most a constant multiple of the quantity $\sqrt{mr/((r-k)\sum_{i=r}^m \mathsf{s}_i(A)^2)}$, where $\mathsf{s}_1(A)\geqslant\ldots\geqslant \mathsf{s}_m(A)$ are the singula…
For a given $δ$, $0<δ<1$, a Blaschke sequence $σ=\{λ_j\}$ is constructed such that every function $f$, $f\in H^\infty$, having $δ<δ_f=\inf_{λ\inσ}|f(λ)|\le\|f\|_\infty\le1$ is invertible in the trace algebra $H^\infty|σ$ (with a norm estimate of the inverse depending on $δ_f$ only), but there exists $f$ with $δ=δ_f\le\|f\|_\infty\le1$, which does not. As an application, a counterexample to a stronger form of the Bourgain--Tzafriri restricted invertibility conjecture for bounded operators is exhibited, where an ``orthogonal (or unconditional) basis'' is replaced by a ``summation block orthogona…
Let $T$ be an absolutely continuous polynomially bounded operator, and let $θ$ be a singular inner function. It is shown that if $θ(T)$ is invertible and some additional conditions are fulfilled, then $T$ has nontrivial hyperinvariant subspaces.
The paper deals with the invertibility of Toeplitz plus Hankel operators T(a)+H(b) acting on classical Hardy spaces on the unit circle T. It is supposed that the generating functions a and b satisfy the condition a(t)a(1/t)=b(t)b(1/t). Special attention is paid to the case of piecewise continuous generating functions. In some cases the dimensions of null spaces of the operator $T(a)+H(b)$ and its adjoint are described.
We study invertibility and compactness of positive Toeplitz operators associated to a continuous Parseval frame on a Hilbert space. As applications, we characterize compactness of affine and Weyl-Heisenberg localization operators as well as give uncertainty principles for the associated transforms.
This note deals with a problem of the probabilistic Ramsey theory in functional analysis. Given a linear operator $T$ on a Hilbert space with an orthogonal basis, we define the isomorphic structure $Σ(T)$ as the family of all subsets of the basis so that $T$ restricted to their span is a nice isomorphism. Our main result is a dimension-free optimal estimate of the size of $Σ(T)$. It improves and extends in several ways the principle of restricted invertibility due to Bourgain and Tzafriri. With an appropriate notion of randomness, we obtain a randomized principle of restricted invertibility.
In this paper, we show that some fundamental results for smooth mappings (e.g., the Brouwer degree formula, the implicit function and inverse function theorems, the mean value theorem, Sard's theorem, Hadamard's global invertibility criteria, Pourciau's surjectivity and openness results) have natural extensions for continuous mappings that are definable in o-minimal structures. The arguments rely on nice properties of definable mappings and sets.
We study the global inversion of a continuous nonsmooth mapping $f: \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$, which may be non-locally Lipschitz. To this end, we use the notion of pseudo-Jacobian map associated to f, introduced by Jeyakumar and Luc, and we consider a related index of regularity for f. We obtain a characterization of global inversion in terms of its index of regularity. Furthermore, we prove that the Hadamard integral condition has a natural counterpart in this setting, providing a sufficient condition for global invertibility.
As a consequence of the Schwartz kernel Theorem, any linear continuous operator $\widehat{A}:$ $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\longrightarrow\mathcal{S}^{\prime}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ can be written in Weyl form in a unique way, namely it is the Weyl quantization of a unique symbol $a\in\mathcal{S}^{\prime}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$. Hence, dequantization can always be performed, and in a unique way. Despite the importance of this topic in Quantum Mechanics and Time-frequency Analysis, the same issue for the Born-Jordan quantization seems simply unexplored, except for the case of polynomial symbols, which we …
We find a sharp combinatorial bound for the metric entropy of sets in R^n and general classes of functions. This solves two basic combinatorial conjectures on the empirical processes. 1. A class of functions satisfies the uniform Central Limit Theorem if the square root of its combinatorial dimension is integrable. 2. The uniform entropy is equivalent to the combinatorial dimension under minimal regularity. Our method also constructs a nicely bounded coordinate section of a symmetric convex body in R^n. In the operator theory, this essentially proves for all normed spaces the restricted invert…
For a compact Hausdorff space $S$, we prove that the closed unit ball of a closed linear subalgebra of the space of real-valued continuous functions on $S$, denoted by $C(S)$, satisfies property-$(P_1)$ (the set-valued generalization of strong proximinality) for the non-empty closed bounded subsets of the bidual of $C(S)$. Various stability results related to property-$(P_1)$ and semi-continuity properties of restricted Chebyshev-center maps are also established. As a consequence, we derive that if $Y$ is a proximinal finite co-dimensional subspace of $c_0$ then the closed unit ball of $Y$ sat…
Extrinsic and intrinsic characterizations are given for the class DSC(K) of differences of semi-continuous functions on a Polish space K, and also decomposition characterizations of DSC(K) and the class PS(K) of pointwise stabilizing functions on K are obtained in terms of behavior restricted to ambiguous sets. The main, extrinsic characterization is given in terms of behavior restricted to some subsets of second category in any closed subset of K. The concept of a strong continuity point is introduced, using the transfinite oscillations osc$_αf$ of a function $f$ previously defined by the sec…
In this paper, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a restricted Chebyshev center of a compact subset of an $L_{1}$-predual space in a closed convex subset of the $L_{1}$-predual space. We also provide a geometrical characterization of an $L_{1}$-predual space in terms of the restricted Chebyshev radius in the following manner. A real Banach space $X$ is an $L_{1}$-predual space if and only if for each non-empty finite subset $F$ of $X$ and closed convex subset $V$ of $X$, $rad_{V}(F) = rad_{X}(F) + d(V, cent_{X}(F))$, where we denote $rad_{X}(F)$, $rad_{V}(F)$,…
In this paper, we discuss the stability of (restricted) Chebyshev centers in few function spaces. For an extremally disconnected compact Hausdorff space $K$ and a finite dimensional Banach space $X$, we prove the existence of Chebyshev centers of closed bounded subsets of the space of $X$-valued continuous functions on $K$, $C(K,X)$ and that of compact subsets of $M$-ideals in $C(K,X)$. It is also proved that the existence of restricted Chebyshev centers is stable in the space of vector-valued bounded functions on an arbitrary set. Furthermore, the stability of continuity properties of the Che…
