This note deals with a problem of the probabilistic Ramsey theory in functional analysis. Given a linear operator $T$ on a Hilbert space with an orthogonal basis, we define the isomorphic structure $Σ(T)$ as the family of all subsets of the basis so that $T$ restricted to their span is a nice isomorphism. Our main result is a dimension-free optimal estimate of the size of $Σ(T)$. It improves and extends in several ways the principle of restricted invertibility due to Bourgain and Tzafriri. With an appropriate notion of randomness, we obtain a randomized principle of restricted invertibility.
This article presents an isomorphism between two operator algebras $L_1$ and $L_2$ where $L_1$ is the set of operators on a space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators and $L_2$ is the set of operators on a tensor product space. We next compare our isomorphism to a well-known result called Choi's isomorphism theorem. The advantage of Choi's isomorphism is that it takes completely positive maps to positive operators. One advantage of our isomorphism is that it applies to infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, while Choi's isomorphism only holds for finite dimensions. Also, our isomorphism preserves operat…
There is a natural isomorphism from image to complement of nullspace, for a bounded linear map from a real Banach space onto a closed subspace of a real Hilbert space. This generalizes Riesz representation (self-duality of Hilbert space). The isomorphism helps solve the pressure equation of fluid dynamics.
We study two subspace systems in a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space up to (bounded) isomorphism. One of the main result of this paper is the following: Isomorphism classes of two subspace systems given by graphs of bounded operators are determined by unitarily equivalent classes of the operator ranges and the nullity of the original bounded operators giving graphs. We construct several non-isomorphic examples of two subspace systems in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space.
Let H be a real (or complex) Hilbert space. Every nonnegative operator $L \in L(H)$ admits a unique nonnegative square root $R \in L(H)$, i.e., a nonnegative operator $R \in L(H)$ such that $R^{2}= L$. Let $GL^{+}_{S}(H)$ be the set of nonnegative isomorphisms in $L(H)$. First we will show that $GL^{+}_{S}(H)$ is a convex (real) Banach manifold. Denoting by $L^{1/2}$ the nonnegative square root of $L$. In [10], Richard Bouldin proves that $L^{1/2}$ depends continuously on $L$ (this proof is non-trivial). This result has several applications. For example, it is used to find the polar decomposit…
We continue the investigation of the isomorphism problem for multiplier algebras of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. In contrast to previous work in this area, we do not study these spaces by identifying them with restrictions of a universal space, namely the Drury-Arveson space. Instead, we work directly with the Hilbert spaces and their reproducing kernels. In particular, we show that two multiplier algebras of Nevanlinna-Pick spaces on the same set are equal if and only if the Hilbert spaces are equal. Most of the article is devoted to the study …
Classical Segal-Bargmann theory studies three Hilbert space unitary isomorphisms that describe the wave-particle duality and the configuration space-phase space. In this work, we generalized these concepts to Clifford algebra-valued functions. We establish the unitary isomorphisms among the space of Clifford algebra-valued square-integrable functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with respect to a Gaussian measure, the space of monogenic square-integrable functions on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with respect to another Gaussian measure and the space of Clifford algebra-valued linear functionals on symmetric tensor…
For the solution of operator equations, Stevenson introduced a definition of frames, where a Hilbert space and its dual are {\em not} identified. This means that the Riesz isomorphism is not used as an identification, which, for example, does not make sense for the Sobolev spaces $H_0^1(Ω)$ and $H^{-1}(Ω)$. In this article, we are going to revisit the concept of Stevenson frames and introduce it for Banach spaces. This is equivalent to $\ell^2$-Banach frames. It is known that, if such a system exists, by defining a new inner product and using the Riesz isomorphism, the Banach space is isomorph…
It is known that the classical Banach--Stone theorem does not extend to the class of $AC(σ)$ spaces of absolutely continuous functions defined on compact subsets of the complex plane. On the other hand, if $σ$ is restricted to the set of compact polygons, then all the corresponding $AC(σ)$ spaces are isomorphic. In this paper we examine the case where $σ$ is the spectrum of a compact operator, and show that in this case one can obtain an infinite family of homeomorphic sets for which the corresponding function spaces are not isomorphic.
In a series of papers Tsirelson constructed from measure types of random sets and generalised random processes a new range of examples for continuous tensor product systems of Hilbert spaces introduced by Arveson for classifying $E_0$-semigroups. This paper establishes the converse: Each continuous tensor product systems of Hilbert spaces comes with measure types of distributions of random (closed) sets in [0,1] or $R_+$. These measure types are stationary and factorise over disjoint intervals. In a special case of this construction, the corresponding measure type is an invariant of the produc…
We consider conditions on a given system $\mathcal{F}$ of vectors in Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, forming a frame, which turn $\mathcal{H}$ into a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. It is assumed that the vectors in $\mathcal{F}$ are functions on some set $Ω$. We then identify conditions on these functions which automatically give $\mathcal{H}$ the structure of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space of functions on $Ω$. We further give an explicit formula for the kernel, and for the corresponding isometric isomorphism. Applications are given to Hilbert spaces associated to families of Gaussian proc…
In this paper, we propose the study of a conjecture whose affirmative solution would provide an example of a non-convex Chebyshev set in an infinite-dimensional real Hilbert space.
We show that among compact subsets of the plane which are drawings of linear graphs, two sets $σ$ and $τ$ are homeomorphic if and only if the corresponding spaces of absolutely continuous functions (in the sense of Ashton and Doust) are isomorphic as Banach algebras. This gives an analogue for this class of sets to the well-known result of Gelfand and Kolmogorov for $C(Ω)$ spaces.
We give a constructive proof that any $σ$-porous subset of a Hilbert space has Lebesgue measure zero on typical $C^{1}$ curves. Further, we discover that this result does not extend to all forms of porosity; we find that even power-$p$ porous sets may meet many $C^{1}$ curves in positive measure.
In this paper we prove that $M^p_Λ$ is almost isometric to $\ell^p$ in the canonical way when $Λ$ is lacunary with a large ratio. On the other hand, our approach can be used to study also the Carleson measures for Müntz spaces $M^p_Λ$ when $Λ$ is lacunary. We give some necessary and some sufficient conditions to ensure that a Carleson embedding is bounded or compact. In the hilbertian case, the membership to Schatten classes is also studied. When $Λ$ behaves like a geometric sequence the results are sharp, and we get some characterizations.
We introduce a one-parameter family of transforms, $U^t_{(m)}$, $t>0$, from the Hilbert space of Clifford algebra valued square integrable functions on the $m$--dimensional sphere, $L^2(S^{m},dσ_{m})\otimes \mathbb{C}_{m+1}$, to the Hilbert spaces, ${\mathcal M}L^2(\mathbb{R}^{m+1} \setminus \{0\},dμ_t)$, of monogenic functions on $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}\setminus \{0\}$ which are square integrable with respect to appropriate measures, $dμ_t$. We prove that these transforms are unitary isomorphisms of the Hilbert spaces and are extensions of the Segal-Bargman coherent state transform, $U_{(1)} : L^2(…
We provide three new examples of twisted Hilbert spaces by considering properties that are "close" to Hilbert. We denote them $Z(\mathcal J)$, $Z(\mathcal S^2)$ and $Z(\mathcal T_s^2)$. The first space is asymptotically Hilbertian but not weak Hilbert. On the opposite side, $Z(\mathcal S^2)$ and $Z(\mathcal T_s^2)$ are not asymptotically Hilbertian. Moreover, the space $Z(\mathcal T_s^2)$ is a HAPpy space and the technique to prove it gives a "twisted" version of a theorem of Johnson and Szankowski (Ann. of Math. 176:1987--2001, 2012). This is, we can construct a nontrivial twisted Hilbert spa…
In this paper we investigate the relationship between the properties of a compact set $σ\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ and the structure of the space $BV(σ)$ of functions of bounded variation (in the sense of Ashton and Doust) defined on $σ$. For the subalgebras of absolutely continuous functions on $σ$, it is known that for certain classes of compact sets one obtains a Gelfand--Kolmogorov type result: the function spaces $AC(σ_1)$ and $AC(σ_2)$ are isomorphic if and only if the domain sets $σ_1$ and $σ_2$ are homeomorphic. Our main theorem is that in this case the isomorphism must extend to an isomorp…
Let $Ω$ denote an algebra of sets and $μ$ a $σ$-finite measure. We then prove that the completion of $Ω$ under the pseudometric $d(A,B)$ = $μ^{\ast}(A \triangle B)$ is $σ$-algebra isomorphic and isometric to the Caratheodory Extension of $Ω$ under the equivalence relation $\sim$.
We give a characterization of extremal sets in Hilbert spaces that generalizes a classical theorem of H. W. E. Jung. We investigate also the behaviour of points near to the circumsphere of such a set with respect to the Kuratowski and Hausdorff measures of non-compactness.
We study pairs of Dirichlet forms related by an intertwining order isomorphisms between the associated $L^2$-spaces. We consider the measurable, the topological and the geometric setting respectively. In the measurable setting, we deal with arbitrary (irreducible) Dirichlet forms and show that any intertwining order isomorphism is necessarily unitary (up to a constant). In the topological setting we deal with quasi-regular forms and show that any intertwining order isomorphism induces a quasi-homeomorphism between the underlying spaces. In the geometric setting we deal with both regular Dirich…
Analogues of the classical Banach-Stone theorem for spaces of continuous functions are studied in the context of the spaces of absolutely continuous functions introduced by Ashton and Doust. We show that if $AC(σ_1)$ is algebra isomorphic to $AC(σ_2)$ then $σ_1$ is homeomorphic to $σ_2$. The converse however is false. In a positive direction we show that the converse implication does hold if the sets $σ_1$ and $σ_2$ are confined to a restricted collection of compact sets, such as the set of all simple polygons.
Sets of bilinear constraints are important in various machine learning models. Mathematically, they are hyperbolas in a product space. In this paper, we give a complete formula for projections onto sets of bilinear constraints or hyperbolas in a general Hilbert space.
In topological equivalence, a bounded linear operator between Banach spaces - we focus on the case of Hilbert spaces - is viewed as only acting linearly and continuously between them qua different spaces with the structure of linear topological space. For instance, invertible operators in Banach spaces (that is, isomorphisms among them) will make up one equivalence class for each class of isomorphic spaces. On the other hand, compact and non-compact operators, or operators with or without a kernel, clearly will not. We make some crucial steps towards describing invariants that will characteriz…
In this paper we construct an injection from the linear space of trigonometric polynomials defined on $\mathbb{T}^d$ with bounded degrees with respect to each variable to a suitable linear subspace $L^1_E\subset L^1(\mathbb{T})$. We give such a quantitative condition on $L^1_E$ that this injection is a isomorphism of a Banach spaces equipped with $L^1$ norm and the norm of the isomorphism is independent on the dimension $d$.
We prove that if $K$ and $L$ are compact spaces and $C(K)$ and $C(L)$ are isomorphic as Banach spaces then $K$ has a $π$-base consisting of open sets $U$ such that $\bar{U}$ is a continuous image of some compact subspace of $L$. This gives some information on isomorphic classes of the spaces of the form $C([0,1]^κ)$ and $C(K)$ where $K$ is Corson compact.
We present new classes of positive definite kernels on non-standard spaces that are integrally strictly positive definite or characteristic. In particular, we discuss radial kernels on separable Hilbert spaces, and introduce broad classes of kernels on Banach spaces and on metric spaces of strong negative type. The general results are used to give explicit classes of kernels on separable $L^p$ spaces and on sets of measures.
A subset of a convex body $B$ containing the origin in a Euclidean space is {\it parkable in $B$} if it can be translated inside $B$ in such a manner that the translate the origin. We provide characterizations of ellipsoids and of centrally symmetric convex bodies in Euclidean spaces of dimension $\ge 3$ based on the notion of parkability, answering several questions posed by G. Bergman. The techniques used, which are based on characterizations of Hilbert spaces among finite-dimensional Banach spaces in terms of their lattices of subspaces and algebras of endomorphisms, also apply to improve a…
Following James' approach, we shall define the Banach space $J(e)$ for each vector $e=(e_1,e_2,...,e_d) \in \Bbb{R}^d$ with $ e_1 \ne 0$. The construction immediately implies that J(1) coincides with the Hilbert space $i_2$ and that $J(1;-1)$ coincides with the celebrated quasireflexive James space $J$. The results of this paper show that, up to an isomorphism, there are only the following two possibilities: (i) either $J(e)$ is isomorphic to $l_2$, if $e_1+e_2+...+e_d\ne 0$ (ii) or $J(e)$ is isomorphic to $J$. Such a dichotomy also holds for every separable Orlicz sequence space $l_M$.
In [11] the authors investigated a family of quotient Hilbert modules in the Cowen-Douglas class over the unit disk constructed from classical Hilbert modules such as the Hardy and Bergman modules. In this paper we extend the results to the multivariable case of higher multiplicity. Moreover, similarity as well as isomorphism results are obtained.
We study Hilbert generated versions of nonseparable Banach spaces $\mathcal X$ considered by Shelah, Steprāns and Wark where the behavior of the norm on nonseparable subsets is so irregular that it does not allow any linear bounded operator on $\mathcal X$ other than a diagonal operator (or a scalar multiple of the identity) plus a separable range operator. We address the questions if these spaces admit uncountable equilateral sets and if their unit spheres admit uncountable $(1+)$-separated or $(1+\varepsilon)$-separated sets. We resolve some of the above questions for two types of these spac…
A truncated Toeplitz operator is the compression $A_ϕ:\K_Θ \to \K_Θ$ of a Toeplitz operator $T_ϕ:H^2\to H^2$ to a model space $\K_Θ := H^2 \ominus ΘH^2$. For $Θ$ inner, let $\T_Θ$ denote the set of all bounded truncated Toeplitz operators on $\K_Θ$. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient condition on inner functions $Θ_1$ and $Θ_2$ which guarantees that $\mathcal{T}_{Θ_1}$ and $\mathcal{T}_{Θ_2}$ are spatially isomorphic (i.e., $U\T_{Θ_1} = \T_{Θ_2}U$ for some unitary $U:\K_{Θ_1} \to \K_{Θ_2}$). We also study operators which are unitarily equivalent to truncated Toeplitz operators and w…
We construct a topology on the standard Hilbert module $l^2(\mathcal A)$ over a unital $W^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$ such that any "compact" operator, (i.e.\ any operator in the norm closure of the linear span of the operators of the form $x\mapsto\left<y,x\right>z$) maps bounded sets into totally bounded sets.
Given a discrete group $\G$ and an orthogonal action $γ: \G \to O(n)$ we study $L_p$ convergence of Fourier integrals which are frequency supported on the semidirect product $\R^n \rtimes_γ\G$. Given a unit $u \in \R^n$ and $1 < p \neq 2 < \infty$, our main result shows that the twisted (directional) Hilbert transform $H_u \rtimes_γid_\G$ is $L_p$-bounded iff the orbit $\mathcal{O}_γ(u)$ is finite. This is in sharp contrast with twisted Riesz transforms $R_u \rtimes_γid_\G$, which are always bounded. Our result characterizes Fourier summability in $L_p$ for this class of groups. We also extend…
A uniform Roe corona is the quotient of the uniform Roe algebra of a metric space by the ideal of compact operators. Among other results, we show that it is consistent with ZFC that isomorphism between uniform Roe coronas implies coarse equivalence between the underlying spaces, for the class of uniformly locally finite metric spaces which coarsely embed into a Hilbert space. Moreover, for uniformly locally finite metric spaces with property A, it is consistent with ZFC that isomorphism between the uniform Roe coronas is equivalent to bijective coarse equivalence between some of their cofinite…
