Main properties of isoscalar giant multipole resonances (up to L=3), including L=0,2 overtones, in medium-mass closed-shell nuclei are described within the semimicroscopic particle-hole dispersive optical model. Main properties are characterized by the energy-averaged strength distribution, projected (one-body) transition density, and probabilities of direct one-nucleon decay. Calculation results obtained for the parameters of the mentioned resonances in the 48Ca, 90Zr, and 132Sn nuclei are compared with available experimental data.
The semimicroscopic particle-hole dispersive optical model (PHDOM) is implemented to describe main properties of Isoscalar Giant Multipole Resonances (up to L=3) in medium-heavy closed-shell nuclei. The main properties are characterized by the strength distribution, transition density, partial and total probabilities of direct one-nucleon decay. Calculation results obtained for the 208Pb nucleus are compared with available experimental data.
A semimicroscopical approach is applied to calculate: (i) strength functions for the charge-exchange spin-dipole giant resonances in the 208Pb parent nucleus; (ii) partial and total branching ratios for the direct proton decay of the resonance in 208Bi. The approach is based on continuum-RPA calculations of corresponding reaction-amplitudes and phenomenological description of the doorway-state coupling to many-quasiparticle configurations. The only adjustable parameter needed for the description is found by comparison of the calculated and experimental total widths of the resonance. Other mode…
A semimicroscopical approach is applied to describe photoabsorption and partial photonucleon reactions accompanied by the excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR). The approach is based on the continuum-RPA (CRPA) with a phenomenological description for the spreading effect. The phenomenological isoscalar part of the nuclear mean field, momentum-independent Landau-Migdal particle-hole interaction, and separable momentum-dependent forces are used as input quantities for the CRPA calculations. The experimental photoabsorption and partial $(n,γ)$-reaction cross sections in the vicinity of t…
A semi-microscopic approach, based on the continuum-random-phase Approximation (CRPA) method, is applied to describe the main properties (strength function, transition density, direct-nucleon-decay branching ratios) of the overtone of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance. Results of the calculation are presented for 208Pb in comparison with those obtained for the isoscalar monopole and dipole giant resonances within the same approach.
Main properties (strength function, energy-dependent transition density, branching ratios for direct nucleon decay) of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in several medium-heavy mass spherical nuclei are described within a continuum-RPA approach, taking into account the smearing effect. All model parameters used in the calculations are taken from independent data. Calculation results are compared with available experimental data.
We present results of microscopic calculations of the strength function, S(E), and alpha-particle excitation cross sections sigma(E) for the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR). An accurate and a general method to eliminate the contributions of spurious state mixing is presented and used in the calculations. Our results provide a resolution to the long standing problem that the nuclear matter incompressibility coefficient, K, deduced from sigma(E) data for the ISGDR is significantly smaller than that deduced from data for the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR).
The isoscalar giant resonances for $^{86}\textrm{Ge}$ are studied by the quasiparticle finite amplitude method based on the covariant density functional theory. In addition to the well-known monopole-quadrupole coupling that splits the isoscalar giant monopole resonance in axially deformed nuclei, a monopole-quadrupole-hexadecupole coupling is identified in the triaxially deformed nucleus $^{86}\textrm{Ge}$, leading to the emergence of a distinct resonance peak at the low energy side of the isoscalar monopole strength function. The transition density of the triaxiality induced resonance peak s…
We study the excited energy of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance with the scaling method in the relativistic many-body framework. In this calculation we introduce the momentum-dependent parts of the Dirac self-energies arising from the one-pion exchange on the assumption of the pseudo-vector coupling with nucleon field. It is shown that this momentum-dependence enhances the Landau mass significantly and thus suppresses the quadrupole resonance energy even giving the small Dirac effective mass which causes a problem in the momentum-independent mean-field theory.
The strength distributions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance have been calculated in $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{112-124}$Sn, $^{144}$Sm, and $^{208}$Pb nuclei within the self-consistent random phase approximation and its extensions which include pairing correlations and quasiparticle-phonon coupling. The results are compared with the available experimental data. The problem of the nuclear matter incompressibility is discussed.
A semi-microscopic approach based on both the continum-random-phase-approximation (CRPA) method and a phenomenological treatment of the spreading effect is extended and applied to describe the main properties (particle-hole strength distribution, energy-dependent transition density, partial direct-nucleon-decay branching ratios) of the isoscalar giant dipole, second monopole, and second quadrupole resonances. Abilities of the approach are checked by description of gross properties of the main-tone resonances. Calculation results obtained for the resonances in a few singly- and doubly-closed-sh…
We motivate and summarise some recent results in the application of formally exact boundary conditions in nuclear time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations, making use of Laplace transformations to calculate the values of the wave functions at the boundaries. We have realised the method in the case of giant monopole resonances of spherically-symmetric nuclei, and present strength functions of O-16 and Ca-40 using a simplified version of the Skyrme force, showing that no artefacts from discretisation occur as contaminants
We have studied the uncharacteristic behavior of the measured values of the isoscalar and isovector centroid energies, ECEN, of giant resonances with multipolarity L=0-3 in 44Ca, 54Fe, 64,68Zn and 56,58,60,68Ni. For this purpose, we carried out calculations of ECEN within the spherical Hartree-Fock (HF)-based random phase approximation (RPA) theory with 33 different Skyrme-type effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. We have also determined the Pearson linear correlation coefficients between the calculated centroid energies and the various nuclear matter (NM) properties associated with each in…
The properties of the Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance (ISGDR) and its electromagnetic structure are investigated within a semiclassical nuclear Fermi-Fluid dynamical approach. Microscopical calculations pointing to a ISGDR distribution splitted into two main broad structures is confirmed within the presented macroscopic approach by the occurence of a ''low-lying'' and a ''high-lying'' state, that are nothing else than the first two overtones of the same resonance. Macroscopically they are pictured as a combination of compressional and vortical nuclear flows. In the second part of the paper th…
We derive analytical expressions for the excitation energy of the isoscalar giant monopole and quadrupole resonances in finite nuclei, by using the scaling method and the extended Thomas-Fermi approach to relativistic mean field theory. We study the ability of several non-linear sigma-omega parameter sets of common use in reproducing the experimental data. For monopole oscillations the calculations agree better with experiment when the nuclear matter incompressibility of the relativistic interaction lies in the range 220-260 MeV. The breathing-mode energies of the scaling method compare satisf…
Using the density-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation and Skyrme forces together with the scaling method and constrained Hartree-Fock calculations, we obtain the average energies of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance. The calculations are done along several isotopic chains from the proton to the neutron drip lines. It is found that while approaching the neutron drip line, the scaled and the constrained energies decrease and the resonance width increases. Similar but smaller effects arise near the proton drip line, although only for the lighter isotopic chains. A qualitatively good agreeme…
Finite amplitude method based on the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc-FAM) is developed and applied to study isoscalar giant monopole resonance in exotic nuclei. Validation of the numerical implementation is examined for $^{208}\textrm{Pb}$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonances for even-even calcium isotopes from $^{40}\textrm{Ca}$ to the last bound neutron-rich nucleus $^{80}\textrm{Ca}$ are calculated, and a good agreement with the available experimental centroid energies is obtained for $^{40-48}\textrm{Ca}$. For the exotic calcium isotopes, e.g., $^{68…
The deformation-induced splitting of isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) is systematically analyzed in a wide range of masses covering medium, rare-earth, actinide, and superheavy axial deformed nuclei. The study is performed within the fully self-consistent quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) method based on the Skyrme functional. Two Skyrme forces, one with a large (SV-bas) and one with a small (SkP) nuclear incompressibility, are considered. The calculations confirm earlier results that, due to the deformation-induced E0-E2 coupling, the isoscalar E0 resonance attains a d…
We study the isoscalar giant monopole resonance for drip-lines and super heavy nuclei in the frame work of a relativistic mean field theory with scaling approach. The well known extended Thomas-Fermi approximation in the non-linear $σ$-$ω$ model is used to estimate the giant monopole excitation energy for some selected light spherical nuclei starting from the region of proton to neutron drip-lines. The application is extended to super heavy region for Z=114 and 120, which are predicted by several models as the next proton magic number beyond Z=82. We compared the excitation energy obtained by …
The incompressibility of both nuclear matter and finite nuclei is estimated by the monopole compression modes in nuclei in the framework of a nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliyubov method and the coherent density fluctuation model. The monopole states originate from vibrations of the nuclear density. The calculations in the model for the incompressibility in finite nuclei are based on the Brueckner energy-density functional for nuclear matter. Results for the energies of the breathing vibrational states and finite nuclei incompressibilities are obtained for various nuclei and their values ar…
We calculate the transition density for the overtone of the isosclar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) from the response to an appropriate external field $\hat{f}_ξ(r)$ obtained using the seemiclassical fluid dynamic approximation and the Hartree-Fock (HF) based random phase approximation (RPA). We determine the mixing parameter $ξ$ by maximizing the ratio of the energy weighted sum for the overtone mode to the total energy weighted sum rule and derive a simple expression for the microscopic transition density associated with the overtone mode. This macroscopic transition density agrees well wi…
Based on an explicit verification of the coupling matrix elements between the 1p1h and 2p2h states we propose a new method of selecting the most important 2p2h states responsible for fragmentation effects. In this way the dimensionality of the problem is reduced, such that the computation becomes feasible and the spreading of the strength is realistic, as verified by some tests of convergence. Calculations in $^{208}$Pb show that due to sizable mixing effects only about 50% of the total isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) $3\hbarω$ strength is located in the energy region between 20 and 2…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in Cd, Sn and Pb isotopes has been studied within the self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock+BCS and quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA). Three Skyrme parameter sets are used in the calculations, i.e., SLy5, SkM* and SkP, since they are characterized by different values of the compression modulus in symmetric nuclear matter, namely K=230, 217, and 202 MeV, respectively. We also investigate the effect of different types of pairing forces on the ISGMR in Cd, Sn and Pb isotopes. The calculated peak energies and the strength distributions of…
"Why is the EoS for tin so soft?" is a longstanding question, which prevents us from determining the nuclear incompressibility $K_\infty$ accurately. To solve this puzzle, a fully self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasiparticle-vibration coupling (QPVC) approach based on Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov is developed. We show that the many-body correlations introduced by QPVC, which shift the ISGMR energy in Sn isotopes by about 0.4 MeV more than the energy in $^{208}$Pb, play a crucial role in providing a unified description of the ISGMR in Sn and Pb isotopes. …
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in Sn isotopes and other nuclei is investigated in the framework of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. The spectrum of GMR is calculated by taking the root-mean-square (RMS) radius of a nucleus as its monopole moment. The peak energy, the full width at half maximum (FWHM), and the strength of GMR extracted by a Gaussian fit to the spectrum have been studied. The GMR peak energies for Sn isotopes from the calculations using a mass-number dependent Gaussian wave-packet width $σ_r$ for nucleons are found to be overestimate…
A semimicroscopical approach is formulated to describe the direct nucleon decay of various giant resonances in intermediate and heavy mass spherical nuclei. The approach consists in: (i) the exact continuum-RPA calculations for amplitudes of the reactions accompanied by excitation and the nucleon decay of the collective particle-hole states (doorway states); (ii) the Breit-Wigner parametrization of the RPA reaction-amplitudes in the vicinity of the giant giant-resonance energy and evaluation of the doorway-state parameter (the energy, entrance and partial nucleon, escape widths); (iii) the phe…
The evolution of the Dipole Response in nuclei with strong neutron excess is studied in the Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation with Skyrme forces. We find that the neutron excess increases the fragmentation of the isovector Giant Dipole Resonance, while pushing the centroid of the distribution to lower energies beyond the mass dependence predicted by the collective models. The radial separation of proton and neutron densities associated with a large neutron excess leads to non vanishing isoscalar transition densities to the GDR states, which are therefore predicted to be excited also…
Effect of ground-state deformation on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance and the first observation of overtones of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance in rare-earth Nd isotopes
The giant collective modes in asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated within a dynamic relaxation time approximation. We derive a coupled dispersion relation and show that two sources of coupling appear: (i) a coupling of isoscalar and isovector modes due to different mean-fields acting and (ii) an explicit new coupling in asymmetric matter due to collisional interaction. We show that the latter one is responsible for a new mode arising besides isovector and isoscalar modes.
The isoscaler giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) are computed using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory (Cb-TDHFB) with five kinds of Skyrme parameter sets (SGII, SkM$^*$, SLy4, SkT3 and SkI3). To extract the nuclear matter property from finite system, ISGMRs of $N$=$Z$ ($Z$=20 - 50), isobar even-even nuclide for $A$=100, 132 and Sn isotopes are analysed systematically. The magnitude relation of nuclear incompressibility-parameter ($K_\infty$) among Skyrme parameter sets, can be corresponded to the peak positions of GMR in spherical isotopes over $A$=80. The parame…
The isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) quadrupole responses of nuclei are systematically investigated using the time-dependent Skyrme Energy Density Functional including pairing in the BCS approximation. Using two different Skyrme functionals, Sly4 and SkM*, respectively 263 and 304 nuclei have been found to be spherical along the nuclear charts. The time-dependent evolution of these nuclei has been systematically performed giving access to their quadrupole responses. It is shown that the mean-energy of the collective high energy state globally reproduces the experimental IS and IV collective e…
The dynamics of monopole giant resonances in nuclei is analyzed in the time-dependent relativistic mean-field model. The phase spaces of isoscalar and isovector collective oscillations are reconstructed from the time-series of dynamical variables that characterize the proton and neutron density distributions. The analysis of the resulting recurrence plots and correlation dimensions indicate regular motion for the isoscalar mode, and chaotic dynamics for the isovector oscillations. Information-theoretic functionals identify and quantify the nonlinear dynamics of giant resonances in quantum syst…
The energetic beam of (spin and isospin zero) $α$-particles remains a very efficient probe for the nuclear isoscalar giant resonances. In the present work, a microscopic folding model study of the isoscalar giant resonances in $^{208}$Pb induced by inelastic \aPb scattering at $E_{\rm lab}=240$ and 386 MeV has been performed using the (complex) CDM3Y6 interaction and nuclear transition densities given by both the collective model and Random Phase Approximation (RPA) approach. The fractions of energy weighted sum rule around the main peaks of the isoscalar monopole, dipole and quadrupole giant …
The strong deformation splitting of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR), recently observed in ($α,α'$) reaction in prolate $^{24}$Mg, is analyzed in the framework of the Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) approach with the Skyrme forces SkM*, SVbas and SkP$^δ$. The calculations with these forces give close results and confirm that the low-energy E0-peak is caused by the deformation-induced coupling of ISGMR with the K=0 branch of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance.
The rate of phase-space exploration in the decay of isovector and isoscalar giant quadrupole resonances in $^{40}$Ca is analyzed. The study is based on the time dependence of the survival probability and of the spectrum of generalized entropies evaluated in the space of 1p-1h and 2p-2h states. If the 2p-2h background shows the characteristics typical for chaotic systems, the isovector excitation evolves almost statistically while the isoscalar excitation remains largely localized, even though it penetrates the whole available phase space.
The particle-hole dispersive optical model, developed recently, is applied to describe properties of high-energy isoscalar monopole excitations in medium-heavy mass spherical nuclei. We consider, in particular, the double transition density averaged over the energy of the isoscalar monopole excitations in $^{208}$Pb in a wide energy interval, which includes the isoscalar giant monopole resonance and its overtone. The energy-averaged strength functions of these resonances are also analyzed. Possibilities for using the mentioned transition density to description of inelastic $α$-scattering are d…
The properties of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) for the double magic $^{48}$Ca are analyzed in the framework of a microscopic model based on Skyrme-type interactions. A method for simultaneously taking into account the coupling between one-, two-, and three-phonon terms in the wave functions of $0^{+}$ states has been developed. The inclusion of three-phonon configurations leads to a substantial redistribution of the ISGMR strength to lower energy $0^{+}$ states and also higher energy tail. Our results demonstrate that the developed approach enables to us to describe a gross s…
The isoscalar monopole(ISM) and dipole(ISD) excitations in $^{12}$C are theoretically investigated with the shifted antisymmetrized molecular dynamics(AMD) plus $3α$-cluster generator coordinate method(GCM). The small amplitude vibration modes are described by coherent one-particle one-hole excitations expressed by small shift of single-nucleon Gaussian wave functions within the AMD framework, whereas the large amplitude cluster modes are incorporated by superposing $3α$-cluster wave functions in the GCM. The coupling of the excitations in the intrinsic frame with the rotation and parity trans…
The isoscalar toroidal dipole strength distributions in spherical nuclei are calculated in the framework of a fully consistent relativistic random phase approximation. It is suggested that the recently observed "low-lying component of the isoscalar dipole mode" might in fact correspond to the toroidal giant dipole resonance. Although predicted by several theoretical models, the existence of toroidal resonances has not yet been confirmed in experiment. The strong mixing between the toroidal resonance and the dipole compression mode might help to explain the large discrepancy between theory and …
The decay of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) in nuclei is studied by means of a nonlinear classical model consisting of several noninteracting nucleons (particles) moving in a potential well with an oscillating nuclear surface (wall). The motion of the nuclear surface is described by means of a collective variable which appears explicitly in the Hamiltonian as an additional degree of freedom. The total energy of the system is therefore conserved. Although the particles do not directly interact with each other, their motions are indirectly coupled by means of their interaction wi…
The isoscalar giant dipole resonance structure in $^{208}$Pb is calculated in the framework of a fully consistent relativistic random phase approximation, based on effective mean-field Lagrangians with nonlinear meson self-interaction terms. The results are compared with recent experimental data and with calculations performed in the Hartree-Fock plus RPA framework. Two basic isoscalar dipole modes are identified from the analysis of the velocity distributions. The discrepancy between the calculated strength distributions and current experimental data is discussed, as well as the implications …
Giant resonances--highly collective, high-frequency oscillations of the atomic nucleus--are the focus of this chapter. We discuss the isoscalar excitations, where the protons and neutrons oscillate in phase, up to angular-momentum transfers $L$ = 3. The procedures of experiments and data analysis employed in extracting the strength distributions associated with these resonances are discussed. The experimentally extracted strength distributions are presented, along with information on the properties of these resonances available to date. The effect of deformation of the nuclear ground state on …
The isoscalar giant monopole, dipole, and quadrupole strength distributions have been deduced in $^{90, 92}$Zr, and $^{92}$Mo from "background-free" spectra of inelastic $α$-particle scattering at a beam energy of 385 MeV at extremely forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. These strength distributions were extracted by a multipole-decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. All these strength distributions for the three nuclei practically coincide with each other, affirming that giant resonances, being collective phenomena, are not influence…
We investigate giant resonances of spherical nuclei on the basis of the Argonne V18 potential after unitary transformation within the Similarity Renormalization Group or the Unitary Correlation Operator Method supplemented by a phenomenological three-body contact interaction. Such Hamiltonians can provide a good description of ground-state energies and radii within Hartree-Fock plus low-order many-body perturbation theory. The standard Random Phase Approximation is applied here to calculate the isoscalar monopole, isovector dipole, and isoscalar quadrupole excitation modes of the 40Ca, 90Zr, a…
Background: In highly deformed nuclei, there is a noticeable coupling of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and the $K = 0$ component of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR), which results in a double peak structure of the isoscalar monopole (IS0) strength (a narrow low-energy deformation-induced peak and a main broad ISGMR part). The energy of the narrow low-lying IS0 peak is sensitive to both the incompressibility modulus $K_\infty$ and the coupling between IS0 and isoscalar quadrupole (IS2) strength. Objective: This study aims to investigate the two-peaked structure …
Using a pseudo-particle technique we simulate large-amplitude isoscalar giant octupole excitations in a finite nuclear system. Dependent on the initial conditions we observe either clear octupole modes or over-damped octupole modes which decay immediately into quadrupole ones. This shows clearly a behavior beyond linear response. We propose that octupole modes might be observed in central collisions of heavy ions.
For the recently developed particle-hole dispersive optical model, weak violations of unitarity due to a phenomenological description of the spreading effect are considered. Methods for unitarity restoration are proposed and implemented for the 208Pb nucleus in the description of the energy-averaged isoscalar monopole double transition density and strength functions in a wide excitation energy interval that includes the isoscalar giant monopole resonance and its overtone. To illustrate abilities of the model, direct neutron decay of the mentioned giant resonance is also considered.
The damping of isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance in $^{16}$O is studied using extended random-phase-approximation approaches derived from the time-dependent density-matrix theory. It is pointed out that the effects of ground-state correlations bring strong fragmentation of quadrupole strength even if the number of two particle--two hole configurations is strongly limited.
The effect of temperature on the evolution of the isovector dipole and isoscalar quadrupole excitations in $^{68}$Ni and $^{120}$Sn nuclei is studied within the fully self-consistent finite temperature quasiparticle random phase approximation framework, based on the Skyrme-type SLy5 energy density functional. The new low-energy excitations emerge due to the transitions from thermally occupied states to the discretized continuum at finite temperatures, whereas the isovector giant dipole resonance is not strongly impacted by the increase of temperature. The radiative dipole strength at low-energ…
The dynamic coupling between giant resonance states and "soft", low-energy excitation, modes in weakly-bound nuclei is investigated. A coupled-channels calculation is reported for the reaction 8B + Pb --> p + 7Be + Pb at 83 MeV/nucleon. It is shown that the low-energy response is only marginally modified by transitions to the isovector giant dipole and isoscalar giant quadrupole resonances.
A method of calculating giant resonance strength functions using Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock techniques is described. An application to isoscalar giant monopole resonances in spherical nuclei is made, thus allowing a comparison between independent 1-, 2- and 3-Dimensional computer codes.
The collective motion of a finite nuclear system is investigated by numerical simulation and by linear response theory. Using a pseudo-particle simulation technique we analyze the giant resonances with a multipole decomposition scheme. We examine the energy and the damping of different giant collective modes and obtain the dependence of these quantities on the proton-neutron ratio. ...(abbreviated) Alternatively the giant collective modes in asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated within linear response theory including the collisional correlations via a dynamic relaxation time approximatio…
Isoscalar dipole strength distributions in spherical medium- and heavy-mass nuclei are calculated within random phase approximation (RPA) or quasiparticle RPA. Different Skyrme-type interactions corresponding to incompressibilities in the range 200 - 250 MeV are used. The results are discussed in comparison with existing data on isoscalar giant dipole resonances. Two main issues are raised, firstly the calculated giant resonance energies are somewhat higher than the observed ones, and secondly a sizable fraction of strength is predicted below 20 MeV which needs to be experimentally confirmed.
The fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) is constructed within the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), which describes the dominant interaction-induced short-range central and tensor correlations by a unitary transformation. Based on the correlated Argonne V18 interaction, the RPA is employed in studies of multipole response in closed-shell nuclei across the nuclide chart. The UCOM-RPA results in a collective character of giant resonances, and it describes rather well the properties of isoscalar giant monopole resonances. However, the excitation energies of isovector …
The extraction of the nuclear incompressibility from the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) measurements is analysed. Both pairing and mutually enhanced magicity (MEM) effects play a role in the shift of the GMR energy between the doubly closed shell $^{208}$Pb nucleus and other Pb isotopes. Pairing effects are microscopically predicted whereas the MEM effect is phenomenologically evaluated. Accurate measurements of the GMR in open-shell Pb isotopes are called for.
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in spherical nuclei $^{100-132}$Sn, $^{144}$Sm, and $^{208}$Pb is investigated within the Skyrme random-phase-approximation (RPA) for a variety of Skyrme forces and different pairing options. The calculated GMR strength functions are directly compared to the available experimental distributions. It is shown that, in accordance to results of other groups, description of GMR in Sn and heavier Sm/Pb nuclei needs different values of the nuclear incompressibilty, $K \approx$ 200 or 230 MeV, respectively. Thus none from the used Skyrme forces is able to d…
