V2487 Oph is a recurrent nova with detected eruptions in 1900 and 1998. Startlingly, V2487 Oph shows flares, called `Superflares', with up to 1.10 mag amplitude, fast rises of under one-minute, always with an initial impulsive spike followed by a roughly-exponential tail, typically one-hour durations, and with random event times averaging once-per-day. The typical flare energy $E$ is over 10$^{38}$ ergs, while the yearly energy budget is 10$^{41}$ ergs. V2487 Oph Superflares obey three relations; the number distribution of flare energies scales as $E^{-2.34\pm0.35}$, the waiting time from one flare to the next is proportional to $E$ of the first event, and flare durations scale as $E^{0.44\pm0.03}$. Scenarios involving gravitational energy and nuclear energy fail to satisfy the three relations. The magnetic energy scenario, however, can explain all three relations. This scenario has magnetic field lines above the disc being twisted and amplified by the motions of their footprints, with magnetic reconnection releasing energy that comes out as Superflare light. This exact mechanism is already well known to occur in white light solar flares, in ordinary M-type flare stars, and in the many Superflare stars observed all across the H-R diagram. Superflares on Superflare stars have rise times, light curve shapes and durations that are very similar to those on V2487 Oph. So we conclude that the V2487 Oph Superflares are caused by large-scale magnetic reconnection. V2487 Oph is now the most extreme Superflare star, exhibiting the largest known flare energy (1.6$\times$10$^{39}$ ergs) and the fastest occurrence rate.
The very fast, FeII-class Nova Ophiuchi 2010 N.1 rised rapidly to maximum brightness (the last 2.2 mag in V band were covered in 3.4 days), maximum that was reached on Jan. 18.3, 2010 at V=8.5, B-V=+0.95, V-Rc=+0.75, and V-Ic=+1.50. The rapid and smooth decline was charaterized by t2(V)=10.0 and t3(V)=23.5 days. The reddening affecting the nova was E(B-V)=0.7 and its distance d=7.4 kpc, for an height above the galactic plane of z=0.6 kpc.
This review concentrates on the multifrequency behaviour of RS Ophiuchi and in particular during its latest outburst. Confirmation of the 1945 outburst, bipolar outflows and its possible fate as a Type Ia Supernova are discussed.
V2672 Oph reached maximum brightness V=11.35 on 2009 August 16.5. With observed t2(V)=2.3 and t3(V)=4.2 days decline times, it is one of the fastest known novae, being rivalled only by V1500 Cyg (1975) and V838 Her (1991) among classical novae, and U Sco among the recurrent ones. The line of sight to the nova passes within a few degrees of the Galactic centre. The reddening of V2672 Oph is E(B-V)=1.6 +/-0.1, and its distance ~19 kpc places it on the other side of the Galactic centre at a galacto-centric distance larger than the solar one. The lack of an infrared counterpart for the progenitor …
We present optical spectrophotometric and near-infrared (NIR) photometric observations of the nova V2676 Oph covering the period from 2012 March 29 through 2015 May 8. The optical spectra and photometry of the nova have been taken from SMARTS and Asiago; the near-infrared photometry was obtained from SMARTS and Mt. Abu. The spectra are dominated by strong H I lines from the Balmer series, Fe II, N I and [O I] lines in the initial days, typical of an Fe II type nova. The measured FWHM for the H-beta and H-alpha lines was 800-1200 km/s. There was pronounced dust formation starting 90 days after …
We report spectroscopic observations of the $Hα$ emission line of the recurrent nova RS~Oph obtained between 12 and 23 August 2021 during the recent outburst. On the basis of the sharp P~Cyg profile superimposed onto the strong H-alpha emission, we estimate that the outflowing velocity of the material surrounding RS Oph is in the range 32 km/s < V_{out} < 68 km/s. The new GAIA distance indicates that the red giant should be probably classified in between II and III luminosity class. The spectra are available upon request from the authors and on Zenodo.
We have obtained daily high resolution Echelle spectroscopy of Nova Oph 2015 during its initial evolution. It reveals the presence of pre-existing circumstellar material around the nova, which is best interpreted as the wind of an evolved companion. On earliest observations, the emission line profiles of Nova Oph 2015 displayed a very narrow emission component (FWHM~60 km/s), recombining over a time scale of 5 days and showing constant low velocity (RV_sun= -4.5 km/s), that we interpret as coming from the wind of the secondary recombining after the ionization from the initial UV-flash of the n…
RS Oph has persistently displayed flickering at optical wavelengths when observed away from its repeating nova outbursts. During the 2006 eruption the flickering disappeared, and this repeated during the recent 2021 event. We have been monitoring RS Oph looking for the reappearance of flickering at B-band following the 2021 outburst. The flickering was still absent (sigma(B)<0.002 mag) on day +210 (counted from nova optical maximum), appeared at sigma(B)=0.008 mag on day +224, and raised to sigma(B)=0.029 mag on day +250. On following dates the amplitude remained large, although fluctuating. T…
We combined photographic, photoelectric and CCD observations of the nova-like variable V380 Oph to get a light curve spanning the time range of 40 years. While the typical high-state brightness of V380 Oph was R~14.5, two low-brightness episodes identified in 1979 (B_pg~17.5) and 2015 (R~19) confirm its classification as a VY Scl-type "anti-dwarf nova". The Fourier period analysis of photoelectric and CCD V and B observations obtained in 2002-16 revealed the presence of two periods 0.148167d and 4.287d, that may be associated with negative superhumps and disc precession. We also compared measu…
We report the analysis of time-series of infrared $JHK_s$ photometry of the dwarf nova V2051 Oph in quiescence. We modelled the ellipsoidal variations caused by the distorted mass-donor star to infer its $JHK_s$ fluxes. From its infrared colors we estimate a spectral type of $M(8.0\pm 1.5)$ and an equivalent blackbody temperature of $T_\mathrm{BB}=(2700\pm270)\,K$. We used the Barnes & Evans relation to infer a photometric parallax distance of $d_\mathrm{BE}=(102\pm16)$ pc to the binary. At this short distance, the corresponding accretion disc temperatures in outburst are too low to be explain…
Using our previously reported observations, we derive some physical parameters of the moderately fast nova V2676 Ophiuchi 2012 # 1. The best-fit CLOUDY model of the nebular spectrum obtained on 2015 May 8 shows a hot white dwarf source with Tbb = 1.0 x 10^{5} K having a luminosity of 1.0 x 10^{38} ergs/s. Our abundance analysis shows that the ejecta are significantly enhanced relative to solar, He/H = 2.14, O/H = 2.37, S/H = 6.62 and Ar/H = 3.25. The ejecta mass is estimated to be 1.42 x 10^{-5} Msun. The nova showed a pronounced dust formation phase after 90 days from discovery. The J-H and H…
The recurrent nova RS Oph underwent a new outburst on August 8, 2021, reaching a visible brightness of V = 4.8 mag. Observations of the 2021 outburst made with the high resolution UVES spectrograph at the Kueyen-UT2 telescope of ESO-VLT in Paranal enabled detection of the possible presence of 7Be freshly made in the thermonuclear runaway reactions. The 7Be yields can be estimated in N(Be)/N(H) = 5.7 x 10^(-6), which are close to the lowest yields measured in classical novae so far. 7Be is short-lived and decays only into 7Li. By means of a spectrum taken during the nebular phase we estimated a…
We report observations of the flickering variability of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS~Oph at quiescence in five bands ($UBVRI$). We find evidence of a correlation between the peak-to-peak flickering amplitude ($ΔF$) and the average flux of the hot component ($F_{\rm av}$). The correlation is highly significant, with a correlation coefficient of 0.85 and a $p$-value of~$\sim 10^{-20}$. Combining the data from all wavebands, we find a dependence of the type $ΔF \propto F^k_{\rm av}$, with power-law index $k = 1.02 \pm 0.04$ for the $UBVRI$ flickering of RS~Oph. Thus, the relationship between t…
A novel method is presented which can pin down the time the accretion disk re-established itself in the RS Oph system after it experienced a nova disruption. The method is based on the re-ionisation of the ejecta by photoionisation from the radiation released in the boundary layer from accretion.
Recurrent novae are binary stars in which a white dwarf accretes matter from a less evolved companion, either a red giant or a main-sequence star. They have dramatic optical brightenings of around 5-6 mag in V in less than a day, several times a century. These occur at variable and unpredictable intervals, and are followed by an optical decline over several weeks, and activity from the X-ray to the radio. The unpredictability of recurrent novae and related stellar types can hamper systematic study of their outbursts. Here we analyse the long-term lightcurve of RS Ophiuchi, a recurrent nova wit…
A directed search for previously-undiscovered nova eruptions was conducted in the astronomical plate archives at Harvard College Observatory and Sonneberg Observatory. We found that an eruption of V2487 Oph (Nova Oph 1998) occurred on 1900 June 20. V2487 Oph was previously classified as a classical nova, which we identified as a probable recurrent nova based on its large expansion velocities and the presence of high excitation lines in the outburst spectrum. The event was recorded on Harvard plate AM 505, at a B magnitude of 10.27 +/- 0.11, which is near peak. The outburst can only be seen on …
We performed 48.6 hours (in 28 nights) of simultaneous B and V band observations of the flickering variability of the recurrent nova RS Oph in quiescence. During the time of our observations the brightness of the system varied between 13.2 > B > 11.1 and the colour in the range 0.86 < B-V < 1.33 . We find that RS~Oph becomes more blue, as it becomes brighter, however the hot component becomes more red as it becomes brighter (assuming that the red giant is non-variable). During all the runs RS Oph exhibits flickering with amplitude 0.16 - 0.59 mag in B band. For the flickering source we find th…
The dust-forming nova V2676 Oph is unique in that it was the first nova to provide evidence of C_2 and CN molecules during its near-maximum phase and evidence of CO molecules during its early decline phase. Observations of this nova have revealed the slow evolution of its lightcurves and have also shown low isotopic ratios of carbon (12C/13C) and nitrogen (14N/15N) in its nova envelope. These behaviors indicate that the white dwarf (WD) star hosting V2676 Oph is a CO-rich WD rather than an ONe-rich WD (typically larger in mass than the former). We performed mid-infrared spectroscopic and photo…
We modelled the late-time {\it Hubble Space Telescope} imaging of RS Ophiuchi with models from Ribeiro et al. (2009), which at the time due to the unknown availability of simultaneous ground-based spectroscopy left some open questions as to the evolution of the expanding nebular from the early to the late time observations. Initial emission line identifications suggest that no forbidden lines are present in the spectra and that the emission lines arising in the region of the WFPC2 F502N images are due to N{\sc ii} and He{\sc i} + Fe{\sc ii}. The best model fit to the spectrum is one where the …
We present an analysis of elemental abundances of ejecta of the recurrent nova RS Oph using published optical and near-infrared spectra during the 2006 outburst. We use the CLOUDY photoionization code to generate synthetic spectra by varying several parameters, the model generated spectra are then matched with the observed emission line spectra obtained at two epochs. We obtain the best fit model parameters through the $χ^{2}$ minimization technique. Our model results fit well with observed optical and near-infrared spectra. The best-fit model parameters are compatible with a hot white dwarf s…

Optical spectra of the 2006 outburst of RS Ophiuchi beginning one day after discovery to over a year after the outburst are presented here. The spectral evolution is found to be similar to that in previous outbursts. The early phase spectra are dominated by hydrogen and helium (I & II) lines. Coronal and nebular lines appear in the later phases. Emission line widths are found to narrow with time, which is interpreted as a shock expanding into the red giant wind. Using the photoionisation code CLOUDY, spectra at nine epochs spanning 14 months after the outburst peak, thus covering a broad range…
Aims: Recurrent nova systems like RS Oph have been proposed as a possible channel to Type Ia Supernova explosions, based on the high mass of the accreting white dwarf. Additional support to this hypothesis has been recently provided by the detection of circumstellar material around SN2006X and SN2007le, showing a structure compatible with that expected for recurrent nova outbursts. In this paper we investigate the circumstellar environment of RS Oph and its structure, with the aim of establishing a firmer and independent link between this class of objects and Type Ia SN progenitors. Methods: We…
If accreting white dwarfs (WD) in binary systems are to produce type Ia supernovae (SNIa), they must grow to nearly the Chandrasekhar mass and ignite carbon burning. Proving conclusively that a WD has grown substantially since its birth is a challenging task. Slow accretion of hydrogen inevitably leads to the erosion, rather than the growth of WDs. Rapid hydrogen accretion does lead to growth of a helium layer, due to both decreased degeneracy and the inhibition of mixing of the accreted hydrogen with the underlying WD. However, until recently, simulations of helium-accreting WDs all claimed t…
RS Ophiuchi is a symbiotic variable and a recurrent nova. We have monitored it with the Nordic Optical Telescope and obtained 30 high resolution (R=46 000) optical spectra over one orbital cycle during quiescence. To our knowledge this is the best-sampled high resolution spectroscopic dataset of RS Oph over one orbital period. We do not detect any direct signatures of an accretion disc such as double peaked emission lines, but many line profiles are complex consisting of superimposed emission and absorption components. We measure the spin of the red giant and conclude that it is tidally locked…
We present near-IR photo-spectroscopy in the H and K bands of the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph). The observations cover the period between 1 to 94 days after the eruption. The near IR light curve and an extensive set of spectra are presented, lines identified and the general characteristics of the spectra discussed. Analysis of the HI line profiles show the presence of broad wings on both flanks of a strong central component indicating the presence of a bipolar velocity flow in the ejecta. Such a flow is kinematically consistent with the bipolar structure that the ob…
RS Oph is a recurrent symbiotic nova that undergoes nova-like outbursts on a time scale of 20 years. Its two last eruptions (1985 and 2006) were subject of intensive multiwavelengths observational campaign from the X-rays to the radio. This contribution aims to determine physical parameters and the ionization structure of the nova from its explosion to the first emergence of the supersoft X-rays (day 26) by using the method of multiwavelength modelling the SED. From the very beginning of the eruption, the model SED revealed the presence of both a strong stellar and nebular component of radiati…
We obtained Hubble STIS spectra of three nova-like variables: V751 Cygni, V380 Oph, and - the only confirmed nova-like variable known to be below the period gap - BK Lyn. In all three systems, the spectra were taken during high optical brightness state, and a luminous accretion disk dominates their far ultraviolet (FUV) light. We assessed a lower limit of the distances by applying the infrared photometric method of \citet{Knigge2006}. Within the limitations imposed by the poorly known system parameters (such as the inclination, white dwarf mass, and the applicability of steady state accretion …
We present near infrared spectroscopy of the recurrent nova RS Oph obtained on several occasions after its latest outburst in 2006 February. The 1-5 mircon spectra are dominated by the red giant, but the H I, He I, and coronal lines present during the eruption are present in all our observations. From the fits of the computed infrared spectral energy distributions to the observed fluxes we find T_eff=4200+/-200,K for the red giant. The first overtone CO bands at 2.3 micron, formed in the atmosphere of the red giant, are variable. The spectra clearly exhibit an infrared excess due to dust emiss…
Recurrent novae are binaries harboring a very massive white dwarf (WD), as massive as the Chandrasekhar mass, because of their short recurrence periods of nova outbursts of 10-100 years. Thus, recurrent novae are considered as candidates of progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). In fact, the SN Ia PTF11kx showed evidence that its progenitor is a symbiotic recurrent nova. The binary parameters of recurrent novae have been well determined, especially for the ones with frequent outbursts, U Sco and RS Oph, which provide useful information on the elementary processes in binary evolution towar…
We report Hubble Space Telescope imaging, obtained 155 and 449 days after the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi, together with ground-based spectroscopic observations, obtained from the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional en San Pedro Mártir, Baja California, México and at the Observatorio Astrofísico Guillermo Haro, at Cananea, Sonora, México. The observations at the first epoch were used as inputs to model the geometry and kinematic structure of the evolving RS Oph nebular remnant. We find that the modeled remnant comprises two distinct co-aligned bipolar components; a low-veloci…
The recurrent nova and symbiotic binary RS Oph erupted again in August 2021 for its eighth known outburst. As part of a multi-epoch and frequency campaign, we observed RS Oph 34 days after the outburst at 5 GHz with the European VLBI Network (EVN). The radio image is elongated over the east-west direction for a total extension of about 90 mas (or about 240 AU at the Gaia DR3 distance d=2.68 [-0.15/+0.17] kpc), and shows a bright and compact central component coincident with the Gaia astrometric position, and two lobes east and west of it, expanding perpendicular to the orbital plane. By compar…
We report the analysis of time-series of infrared $JHK_s$ photometry of the dwarf nova V2051 Oph in quiescence with eclipse mapping techniques to investigate structures and the spectrum of its accretion disc. The light curves after removal of the ellipsoidal variations caused by the mass-donor star show a double-wave modulation signalling the presence of two asymmetric light sources in the accretion disc. Eclipse maps reveal two spiral arms on top of the disc emission, one at $R_1= 0.28\pm 0.02 \,R_\mathrm{L1}$ and the other at $R_2= 0.42\pm 0.02 \,R_\mathrm{L1}$ (where $R_\mathrm{L1}$ is the …
We present the evolution of the optical spectra of the 2021 outburst of RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) over about a month after the outburst. The spectral evolution is similar to the previous outbursts. Early spectra show prominent P Cygni profiles of hydrogen Balmer, \ion{Fe}{ii}, and \ion{He}{i} lines. The emission lines were very broad during the initial days, which later became narrower and sharper as the nova evolved. This is interpreted as the expanding shocked material into the winds of the red giant companion. We find that the nova ejecta expanded freely for $\sim 4$ days, and afterward, the sho…
In this review, I present our current state of knowledge regarding both Classical Nova and Recurrent Nova systems. Two particular objects (V1974 Cyg and RS Oph) are chosen to illustrate the range of phenomena that may be associated with their outbursts. The wider importance of nova research is emphasised and some of the most pressing unsolved problems are summarised.
Nova V2491 Cyg was discovered on April 10.72 UT 2008 (Nakano, 2008). Here we present spectrophotometric premises that V2491 Cyg can be a good candidate for recurrent nova (RNe). Its properties are compared to five well known RNe with red dwarf secondaries (U Sco, V394 Cra, T Pyx, CI Aql, IM Nor) and recently confirmed as recurrent nova V2487 Oph (Pagnotta et al.,2008). Photometric $U, B, V, R_C, I_C$ and moderate resolution (R$\sim 1500$) spectral observations of V2491 Cyg were carried out in the Torun Observatory (Poland) between April 14 and May 20 2008.
Radio, infrared, and optical observations of the 2006 eruption of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) showed that the explosion produced non-spherical ejecta. Some of this ejected material was in the form of bipolar jets to the east and west of the central source. Here we describe Xray observations taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory one and a half years after the beginning of the outburst that reveal narrow, extended structure with a position angle of approximately 300 degrees (east of north). Although the orientation of the extended feature in the X-ray image is consistent…
Over the last 40 years, multi-frequency observations, coupled with advances in theoretical modelling, have led to a much fuller understanding of the nova phenomenon. Here I give a brief review of the current state of knowledge of Classical and Recurrent Novae including their central systems; the causes and consequences of their outbursts; sub-types, and possible relationships to Type Ia Supernovae. Particular attention is paid to the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi as it shows a wealth of phenomena associated with its 2006 outburst. Finally, some open questions and avenues for future work are summa…
Of the approximately 400 known Galactic classical novae, only ten of them, the recurrent novae, have been seen to erupt more than once. At least eight of these recurrents are known to harbor evolved secondary stars, rather than the main sequence secondaries typical in classical novae. In this paper, we propose a new nova classification system, based solely on the evolutionary state of the secondary, and not (like the current schemes) based on the properties of the outbursts. Using archival optical and near-infrared photometric observations of a sample of thirty eight quiescent Galactic novae w…
We performed simultaneous observations in 3 bands (UBV) of the flickering variability of the recurrent novae RS Oph and T CrB at quiescence. Using new and published data, we compare the colours of the flickering in cataclysmic variables and symbiotic recurrent novae. We find a difference between the colours of the flickering source in these two types of accreting white dwarfs. The detected difference is highly significant with $ p-value \approx 2 \times 10^{-6}$ for the distributions of $(U-B)_0$ colour and $p \approx 3 \times 10^{-5}$ on (U-B) versus (B-V) diagram. The possible physical reaso…
Recurrent novae (RNe) play an important role as one of the suspected progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae (SNe) which are used as primary distance indicators in cosmology. Thus, it is important to investigate the nature of their central binary systems to determine the relation between the parameters of the central system and outburst type, and finally ascertain the population of novae that might be available to give rise to the progenitors of Type Ia SNe. The details of the preliminary investigation looking for characteristics that may distinguish recurrent and classical novae (CNe) system…
The nova outburst experienced in 2010 by the symbiotic binary Mira V407 Cyg has been extensively studied at optical and infrared wavelengths with both photometric and spectroscopic observations. This outburst, reminiscent of similar events displayed by RS Oph, can be described as a very fast He/N nova erupting while being deeply embedded in the dense wind of its cool giant companion. The hard radiation from the initial thermonuclear flash ionizes and excites the wind of the Mira over great distances (recombination is observed on a time scale of 4 days). The nova ejecta is found to progressivel…
The classical nova V2491 Cyg was once suggested to be a recurrent nova. We have broadly reproduced the light curve of V2491 Cyg by a nova outburst model on a cold $1.36~M_\odot$ white dwarf (WD), which strongly suggests that V2491 Cyg is a classical nova outbursting on a cold very massive WD rather than a recurrent nova outbursting on a warmer WD like the recurrent nova RS Oph. In a long-term evolution of a cataclysmic binary, an accreting WD has been settled down to a thermal equilibrium state with the balance of gravitational energy release and neutrino loss. The central temperature of the W…
Pre-outburst 2MASS and WISE photometry of Nova Sco 2014 (V1534 Sco) have suggested the presence of a cool giant at the location of the nova in the sky. The spectral evolution recorded for the nova did not however support a direct partnership because no flash-ionized wind and no deceleration of the ejecta were observed, contrary to the behavior displayed by other novae which erupted within symbiotic binaries like V407 Cyg or RS Oph. We have therefore obtained an 0.8-2.5 micron spectra of the remnant of Nova Sco 2014 in order to ascertain if a cool giant is indeed present and if it is physically…
We present an analysis of optical and infrared spectra of the recurrent nova RS Oph obtained during between 2006 and 2009. The best fit to the optical spectrum for 2006 September 28 gives effective temperature Tef = 3900~K for log g = 2.0, while for log g = 0.0 we find Tef = 4700~K, and a comparison with template stellar spectra provides Tef $\sim$ 4500 K. The observed spectral energy distribution (SED), and the intensities of the emission lines, vary on short ($\sim 1$~day) time-scales, due to disc variability. We invoke a simple one-component model for the accretion disc, and a model with a …
The recurrent symbiotic nova RS Oph reoccurred after 21 years on 12 February 2006. In contrast to the 1985 outburst, much denser coverage with X-ray observations was achieved. Swift observed RS Oph up to several times a day while Chandra and XMM-Newton observed two to four times during each phase of evolution. While the Swift observations provide high resolution in time, the Chandra and XMM-Newton observations provide high spectral resolution. Refined models can be constrained by the grating spectra, and interpolation of the model parameters can be constrained by the wealth of Swift observatio…
The recently discovered high energy emission from the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi by Fermi-LAT ($>$ 100 MeV), H.E.S.S. and MAGIC ($>$ 100 GeV), hints towards a possible hadronic origin of this radiation component. From the observed high energy photon flux we derive the expected number of neutrino events that could be detected by present and future neutrino telescopes in the different energy ranges. We find that both hadronic and leptonic processes remain valid interpretations for this $ \ gamma $ emission. Preliminary estimates indicate that with the "next-generation" instrument IceCube-Gen2, t…
The nova outburst of V407 Cyg in 2010 Mar. 10 was the first observed for this star but its close resemblance to the well known symbiotic-like recurrent nova RS Oph suggests that it is also a member of this rare type of Galactic novae. The nova was the first detected at $γ$-ray energies and is the first known nova explosion for this system. The extensive multiwavelength coverage of this outburst makes it an ideal comparison with the few other outbursts known for similar systems. We extend our previous analysis of the Mira and the expanding shock from the explosion to detail the time development…

We report combined optical and X-ray observations of nova M31N 2007-12b. Optical spectroscopy obtained 5 days after the 2007 December outburst shows evidence of very high ejection velocities (FWHM H$α\simeq 4500$ km s$^{-1}$). In addition, Swift X-ray data show that M31N 2007-12b is associated with a Super-Soft Source (SSS) which appeared between 21 and 35 days post-outburst and turned off between then and day 169. Our analysis implies that $M_{\rm WD} \ga 1.3 $M$_{\odot}$ in this system. The optical light curve, spectrum and X-ray behaviour are consistent with those of a recurrent nova. Hubbl…
We present models of spherically symmetric recurrent nova shells interacting with circumstellar material in a symbiotic system composed of a red giant expelling a wind, and a white dwarf accreting from this material. Recurrent nova eruptions periodically eject material at high velocities ($\gtrsim 10^3$ km/s) into the red giant wind profile, creating a decelerating shock wave as circumstellar material is swept up. High circumstellar material densities cause the shocked wind and ejecta to have very short cooling times of days to weeks. Thus, the late time evolution of the shell is determined by…
Near-IR spectroscopy is presented for Nova Scorpii 2014. It is shown that the outburst occurred in a symbiotic binary system - an extremely rare configuration for a classical nova outburst to occur in but appropriate for the eruption of a recurrent nova of the T CrB class. We estimate the spectral class of secondary as M5III $\pm$ (two sub-classes). The maximum magnitude versus rate of decline (MMRD) relations give an unacceptably large value of 37.5 kpc for the distance. The spectra are typical of the He/N class of novae with strong HeI and H lines. The profiles are broad and flat topped with…
The shock interaction and evolution of nova ejecta with a wind from a red giant star in a symbiotic binary system are investigated via three-dimensional hydrodynamics simulations. We specifically model the March 2010 outburst of the symbiotic recurrent nova V407~Cygni from the quiescent phase to its eruption phase. The circumstellar density enhancement due to wind-white dwarf interaction is studied in detail. It is found that the density-enhancement efficiency depends on the ratio of the orbital speed to the red giant wind speed. Unlike another recurrent nova, RS~Ophiuchi, we do not observe a …
The recurrent nova (RN) V745 Scorpii underwent its third known outburst on 2014 February 6. Infrared monitoring of the eruption on an almost daily basis, starting from 1.3d after discovery, shows the emergence of a powerful blast wave generated by the high velocity nova ejecta exceeding 4000 kms$^{-1}$ plowing into its surrounding environment. The temperature of the shocked gas is raised to a high value exceeding 10$^{8}$K immediately after outburst commencement. The energetics of the outburst clearly surpass those of similar symbiotic systems like RS Oph and V407 Cyg which have giant secondar…
