The universal thermodynamic relations between corrections to entropy and extremality for various black holes solutions have been studied. In this regard, we hereby consider a number of different black brane solutions in different structures for perturbative corrections to general relativity. These are, namely, black brane solution in Rastall AdS massive gravity, Einstein-Yang-Mills AdS black brane solution in massive gravity and general anisotropic black brane in Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We calculate both the entropy and extremality bound by introducing a small constant correction to the action. Remarkably, we find that black brane violates the universal thermodynamic relations. In other words, a universal relation between corrections to entropy and extremality are not valid in the black brane structure.
Lorentz violation in a brane-world scenario is presented and used to obtain a relationship between the speed of gravitational waves in the bulk and that on the brane. Lorentz violating effects would manifest themselves in gravitational waves travelling with a greater speed in the bulk than on the brane and this effect is independent of the signature of the extra dimension.
We study the cosmic censorship of dynamical $p$-brane systems in a $D$-dimensional background. This is the generalization of the analysis in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory, which was discussed by Horne and Horowitz [Phys. Rev. D 48, R5457 (1993)]. We show that a timelike curvature singularity generically appears from an asymptotic region in the time evolution of the $p$-brane solution. Since we can set regular and smooth initial data in a dynamical M5-brane system in 11-dimensional supergravity, this implies a violation of cosmic censorship.
We study scalar perturbations of nonlinear charged Lifshitz black branes with hyperscaling violating factor, and we find numerically the quasinormal modes for scalar fields. Then, we study the stability of these black branes under massive and massless scalar field perturbations. Also, we consider different values of the dynamical exponent, the nonlinear exponent and the hyperscaling violating exponent.
We extend to black branes (BB) in arbitrary dimensions the results of Ref. [1] about hyperscaling violation and phase transition for scalar black 2-branes. We derive the analytic form of the (d+1)-dimensional scalar soliton interpolating between a conformal invariant AdS vacuum in the infrared and a scale covariant metric in the ultraviolet. We show that the thermodynamical system undergoes a phase transition between Schwarzschild-AdS and a scalar-dressed BB. We calculate the critical exponent and the hyperscaling violation parameter in the two phases. We show that our scalar BB solutions gene…
If an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton system admits the extreme brane solution in which no force works between the parallel branes, the collective motion of nearly parallel branes exhibits the thermodynamical properties which are coincident with those of the corresponding black branes at low energy regime (up to unfixed numerical factors). Hence it may provide the microscopic description of the black branes ($p$-soup proposal). This fact motivates us to test this proposal in the intersecting black branes which have multiple brane charges and/or momentum along the brane direction. We consider the case…
The thermodynamics and phase transitions of charged RN-AdS and rotating Kerr-AdS black holes in a generalized Randall-Sundrum braneworld are investigated in the framework of thermodynamic geometry. A detailed analysis of the thermodynamics, stability and phase structures in the canonical and the grand canonical ensembles for these AdS braneworld black holes are described. The thermodynamic curvatures for both these AdS braneworld black holes are computed and studied as a function of the thermodynamic variables. Through this analysis we illustrate an interesting dependence of the phase structur…
The notion of Lorentz violation in four dimensions is extended to a 5-dimensional brane-world scenario by utilizing a dynamical vector field assumed to point in the bulk direction, with Lorentz invariance holding on the brane. The cosmological consequences of this theory consisting of the time variation in the gravitational coupling $G$ and cosmological term $Λ_4$ are explored. The brane evolution is addressed by studying the generalized Friedmann and Raychaudhuri equations. The behavior of the expansion scale factor is then considered for different possible scenarios where the bulk cosmologic…
We disclose the deep connection between the thermodynamics and gravity in a general braneworld model with curvature correction terms on the brane and in the bulk, respectively. We show that the Friedmann equations on the 3-brane embedded in the 5D spacetime with curvature correction terms can be written directly in the form of the first law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon. Using the first law, we extract the entropy expression of the apparent horizon on the brane, which is useful in studying the thermodynamical properties of the black hole horizon on the brane in Gauss-Bonnet gravity…
We study the physical process version and the equilibrium state version of the first law of thermodynamics for a charged p-brane. the general setting for our investigations is (n+p+1)-dimensional Einstein dilaton gravity with (p+2) strength form fields.

It is argued that many non-extremal black branes exhibit a classical Gregory-Laflamme instability if, and only if, they are locally thermodynamically unstable. For some black branes, the Gregory-Laflamme instability must therefore disappear near extremality. For the black $p$-branes of the type II supergravity theories, the Gregory-Laflamme instability disappears near extremality for $p=1,2,4$ but persists all the way down to extremality for $p=5,6$ (the black D3-brane is not covered by the analysis of this paper). This implies that the instability also vanishes for the near-extremal black M2 …
We introduce the surface term for quasitopological gravity in order to make the variational principle of the action well-defined. We also introduce the charged black branes of quasitopological gravity and calculate the finite action through the use of counterterm method. Then we compute the thermodynamic quantities of the black brane solution by use of Gibbs free energy and investigate the first law of thermodynamics by introducing a Smarr-type formula. Finally, we generalize our solutions to the case of rotating charged solutions.
We investigate the thermodynamics of rotating Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the solutions and obtain a relation between temperature, angular velocity, energy density, entropy density and angular momentum density. We, also, obtain a Smarr-type formula for the energy density as a function of entropy and angular momentum densities, and show that the thermodynamic quantities calculated in this paper satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we investigate the stability of black brane solutions in both canonical and grand-canonica…
Motivated by a recent work on asymptotically Ad$S_4$ black holes in M-theory, we investigate both thermodynamics and thermodynamical geometry of Raissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes from M2-branes. More precisely, we study AdS black holes in $AdS_{4}\times S^{7}$, with the number of M2-branes interpreted as a thermodynamical variable. In this context, we calculate various thermodynamical quantities including the chemical potential, and examine their phase transitions along with the corresponding stability behaviors. In addition, we also evaluate the thermodynamical curvatures of the Weinhold, Ru…
By fast Lyapunov indicator (FLI), we study the chaotic dynamics of closed string around charged black brane with hyperscaling violation (HV). The Hawking temperature, Lifshitz dynamical exponent and HV exponent together affect the chaotic dynamics of this system. The temperature plays the role of driving the closed string to escape to infinity. There is a threshold value $z_{\ast}=2$, below which the string is captured by the black brane no matter where the string is placed at the beginning. However, when $z>2$, the string escapes to infinity if it is placed near the black brane at the beginni…
In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamics of Lifshitz black branes in the presence of a nonlinear massless electromagnetic field. We begin by introducing the appropriate action in grand-canonical and canonical ensembles for nonlinear electromagnetic field. The condition on the parameters of the metric for having black brane solutions will be presented. Since the field equations cannot be solved for an arbitrary value of the critical exponent $z$, we obtain a conserved quantity along the $r$ coordinate that enables us to relate the parameters of the metric at the horizon and at infinity.…
We investigate the thermodynamics of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We begin by introducing the finite action of third order Lovelock gravity in the presence of a massive vector field for a flat boundary, and use it to compute the energy density of these black branes. Using the field equations, we find a conserved quantity along the $r$ coordinate that relates the metric parameters at the horizon and at infinity. Remarkably, though the subleading large-$r$ behavior of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes differs substantively from their Einsteinian Lifshitz counterparts, we find that the relationsh…
Applying the Clausius relation, $δQ=TdS$, to the apparent horizon of FRW universe in brane world scenarios, we show that an explicit entropy expression associated with the apparent horizon can be obtained. On the apparent horizon, the relation, $dE=TdS +WdV$, also holds in the brane world scenarios. We show these results in the RSII model, warped DGP model and the more general case with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and an intrinsic curvature term on the brane.
We study the thermodynamics of flavor D7-branes embedded in an anisotropic black brane solution of type IIB supergravity. The flavor branes undergo a phase transition between a `Minkowski embedding', in which they lie outside of the horizon, and a `black hole embedding', in which they fall into the horizon. This transition depends on the black hole temperature, its degree of anisotropy, and the mass of the flavor degrees of freedom. It happens either at a critical temperature or at a critical anisotropy. A general lesson we learn from this analysis is that the anisotropy, in this particular re…
As in the case of Einstein or Lovelock gravity, the action of quartic quasitopological gravity has not a well-defined variational principle. In this paper, we first introduce a surface term that makes the variation of quartic quasitopological gravity well defined. Second, we present the static charged solutions of quartic quasitopological gravity in the presence of a non linear electromagnetic field. One of the branch of these solutions presents a black brane with one or two horizons or a naked singularity depending on the charge and mass of the solution. The thermodynamic of these black brane…
We investigate thermodynamic and dynamical stability of a family of six-dimensional braneworld solutions with de Sitter branes. First, we investigate thermodynamic stability in terms of de Sitter entropy. We see that the family of solutions is divided into two distinct branches: the high-entropy branch and the low-entropy branch. By analogy with ordinary thermodynamics, the high-entropy branch is expected to be stable and the low-entropy branch to be unstable. Next, we investigate dynamical stability by analyzing linear perturbations around the solutions. Perturbations are decomposed into scal…
In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamics of hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black branes in the presence of a nonlinear massless electromagnetic field. We, first, obtain analytic nonlinear charged black brane solutions with hyperscaling violating factor in dilaton gravity and give the condition on the parameters of the metric for having black brane solutions. Second, we introduce the appropriate finite action in grand-canonical and canonical ensembles for nonlinear electromagnetic field. Next, by generalizing the counterterm method for the asymptotic Lifshitz spacetimes with hyperscali…
The brane-world scenario offers the possibility for signals to travel outside our visible universe and reenter it. We find the condition for a signal emitted from the brane to return to the brane. We study the propagation of such signals and show that, as seen by a 4D observer, these signals arrive earlier than light traveling along the brane. We also study the horizon problem and find that, while the bulk signals can travel far enough to homogenize the visible universe, it is unlikely that they have a significant effect since they are redshifted in the gravitational field of the bulk black ho…
We investigate general features of charged Lovelock black branes by giving a detailed description of geometrical, thermodynamic and holographic properties of charged Gauss-Bonnet (GB) black branes in five dimensions. We show that when expressed in terms of effective physical parameters, the thermodynamic behaviour of charged GB black branes is completely indistinguishable from that of charged Einstein black branes. Moreover, the extremal, near-horizon limit of the two classes of branes is exactly the same as they allow for the same AdS$_2\times R_3$, near-horizon, exact solution. This implies …
Inspired from the inflation brane world cosmology, we study the thermodynamics of a black hole solution in two dimensional dilaton gravity with an arctangent potential background. We first derive the two dimensional black hole geometry, then we examine its asymptotic behaviors. More precisely, we find that such behaviors exhibit properties appearing in some known cases including the Anti de Sitter and the Schwarzchild black holes. Using the complex path method, we compute the Hawking radiation. The entropy function can be related to the value of the potential at the horizon.
We investigate the thermodynamical behavior and the scaling symmetries of the scalar dressed black brane (BB) solutions of a recently proposed, exactly integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model [1], which also arises as compactification of (p-1)-branes with a smeared charge. The extremal, zero temperature, solution is a scalar soliton interpolating between a conformal invariant AdS vacuum in the near-horizon region and a scale covariant metric (generating hyperscaling violation on the boundary field theory) asymptotically. We show explicitly that for the boundary field theory this implies the e…
We present a general analysis of the thermodynamics of spinning black p-branes of string and M-theory. This is carried out both for the asymptotically-flat and near-horizon case, with emphasis on the latter. In particular, we use the conjectured correspondence between the near-horizon brane solutions and field theories with 16 supercharges in various dimensions to describe the thermodynamic behavior of these field theories in the presence of voltages under the R-symmetry. Boundaries of stability are computed for all spinning branes both in the grand canonical and canonical ensemble, and the ef…
We reinvestigate the thermodynamics of black objects (holes and strings) in four-dimensional braneworld models that are originally constructed by Emparan, Horowitz and Myers based on the anti-de Sitter (AdS) C-metric. After proving the uniqueness of slicing the AdS C-metric, we derive thermodynamic quantities of the black objects by means of the Euclidean formulation and find that we have no necessity of requiring any regularization to calculate their classical action. We show that there exist the Bekenstein-Hawking law and the thermodynamic first law. The thermodynamic mass of the localized b…
By incorporating the electrical stability condition into the discussion, we continue the study on the thermodynamic phase structures of the D$p$-D$(p + 4)$ black brane in GG, GC, CG, CC ensembles defined in our previous paper arXiv:1502.00261. We find that including the electrical stability conditions in addition to the thermal stability conditions does not modify the phase structure of the GG ensemble but puts more constraints on the parameter space where black branes can stably exist in GC, CG, CC ensembles. In particular, the van der Waals-like phase structure which was supposed to be prese…
Galileons are stable null energy condition (NEC) violating perturbations. If these NEC violating modes are coupled to Einstein gravity, they can cause violation of the second law of black hole thermodynamics. We demonstrate that galileons can only be coupled to quadratic gravity since they are generated by consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert-Gauss-Bonnet action from 10-dimensions to 4-dimensions. As a result, the NEC violation of galileons can no longer be the source of the violation of the second law of black hole thermodynamics.
We consider a configuration of strings and solitons in the type IIB superstring theory on $M^5\times T^5$, which is composed of a set of arbitrarily-wound D-fivebranes on $T^5$ and a set of arbitrarily-wound D-strings on $S^1$ of the torus. For the configuration, it is shown that number of microscopic states is bounded from above by the exponential of the Hawking-Bekenstein entropy of the corresponding black hole and the temperature of closed string radiation from the D-branes is bounded from below by the Hawking temperature of the black hole. After discussing the necessary and sufficient cond…
In a previous paper, we developed a numerical method to obtain a static black hole localized on a 3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum infinite braneworld, and presented examples of numerical solutions that describe small localized black holes. In this paper we quantitatively analyze the behavior of the numerically obtained black hole solutions, focusing on thermodynamic quantities. The thermodynamic relations show that the localized black hole deviates smoothly from a five-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, which is a solution in the limit of a small horizon radius. We compare the thermodynamic …
Tilted brane in theories with large compact extra dimensions leads to spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Lorentz and rotational invariance in four dimensions, as shown by Dvali and Shifman. In this brief report, we point out that the mentioned Lorentz symmetry breaking, although leading to the CPT--violating interaction terms, cannot lead to the CPT violation in the experimentally interesting $K$--${\bar K}$ and analogous systems.
A brief survey of fermion localization mechanism on a domain wall ("thick brane") generated by a topologically nontrivial vacuum configuration of scalar fields is given. The extension of scalar fields interaction with fermions which supplies fermions with an axial mass is proposed. For several flavors and generations of fermions this extension can entail the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix of the Standard Model. As well the model with two scalar doublets which provide a supplementary CP violation mechanism is considered.
We derive the low energy effective theory for two brane system with bulk complex scalar fields. Then we find that higher order corrections to the effective equation for scalar fields on the brane lead us to the baryon number(B) violating process if the complex scalar field is regarded as a particle carrying the baryon number current. We see that the motion of the brane leads us the baryon number violation via the current-curvature coupling even if the potential for scalar fields do not exist. We also estimate the net baryon number assuming a C/CP violating interaction.
In this paper, we study topological AdS black branes of $(n+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory and investigate their properties. We use the area law, surface gravity and Gauss law interpretations to find entropy, temperature and electrical charge, respectively. We also employ the modified Brown and York subtraction method to calculate the quasilocal mass of the solutions. We obtain a Smarr-type formula for the mass as a function of the entropy and the charge, compute the temperature and the electric potential through the Smarr-type formula and show that these thermodynamic quantit…
Negative energy objects generally lead to instabilities and a number of other disturbing behaviors. In particular, negative energy fluxes lead to a breakdown of the classical area theorem for black hole horizons, which can lead to violations of the second law of thermodynamics. The negative energy objects that arise in string theory involve special boundary conditions which remove the perturbative instabilities. We show that they have additional special features which allow them to evade contradiction with the second law. We identify one mechanism which applies for most orientifold planes in s…
In this paper, we will analyze the effects of super-light brane world perturbative modes on clustering of galaxies. In present manuscript, we use the Boltzmann and Tsallis statistical approaches to study the large distance modification of gravity in the brane world. The impact of modified potential on clustering of galaxies is analyzed in both the approaches. The infinities associated with Newtonian point mass approximation of gravity models is removed using the analytical extensions. The regularized and finite partition function is obtained for the system of galaxies in the brane world model …
We study the thermodynamics of some cosmological models based on modified gravity, a braneworld with induced gravity and curvature effect. Dark energy component seems necessary if the models are to approach thermal equilibrium in the long run.
In string theory, a scalar field often appears as a moduli of a geometrical configuration of D-branes in higher dimensional space. In the low energy effective theory on D-branes, the distance between D-branes is translated into the energy scale of the gauge symmetry breaking. In this paper, we study a phenomenological consequence of a possibility that the Higgs field is such a moduli field and the D-brane configuration is stabilized by a stationary motion, in particular, revolution of D-branes on which we live. Then, due to the Coriolis force, Higgs mode is mixed with the angular fluctuation o…
The dynamics of a probe particle or wrapped brane moving in the two-dimensional Rindler space can be described by a time-dependent tachyon field theory. Using knowledge of tachyon condensation, we learn that the infalling brane gets thermalised and produces open string pairs at the Hagedorn temperature when entering into the near-horizon Rindler wedge. It is shown that the Hagedorn temperature of the infalling brane is equal to the Hawking temperature of the host black hole detected in the same time coordinate. The infalling brane will decay completely into closed strings, mainly massive modes…
We consider scalar and axial gravitational perturbations of black hole solutions in brane world scenarios. We show that perturbation dynamics is surprisingly similar to the Schwarzschild case with strong indications that the models are stable. Quasinormal modes and late-time tails are discussed. We also study the thermodynamics of these scenarios verifying the universality of Bekenstein's entropy bound as well as the applicability of 't Hooft's brickwall method.
For the the quintic quasitopological action which has no well-defined variational principle, we introduced a surface term that for a spacetime with flat boundaries make the action well-defined. Moreover, we investigated the numerical solutions of the above-mentioned gravity coupled to the nonlinear logarithmic and exponential electrodynamics. It has no horizon and curvature except one conical singularity at $r=0$ with a deficit angle $δϕ$. Also we found the counterterm which removes non-logarithmic divergences for the static quintic quasitopological gravity. Using this counterterm one can calc…
We study higher derivative corrections to black brane thermodynamics and their implications for the weak gravity conjecture for $p$-form gauge fields. In particular we show that higher derivative corrections decrease tension-to-charge ratios of extremal black branes as implied by the weak gravity conjecture, if four-derivative couplings follow scattering positivity bounds. We also demonstrate that entropy corrections in the micro canonical ensemble are positive under the same assumptions. This extends earlier works in the Einstein-Maxwell theory to $p$-form gauge fields in general spacetime di…
A study of Universal thermodynamics is done in the frame work of RSII brane model and DGP brane scenario. The Universe is chosen as FRW model bounded by apparent or event horizon. Assuming extended Hawking temperature on the horizon, the unified first law is examined for perfect fluid (with constant equation of state) and modified Chaplygin gas model. As a result there is a modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizons. Further the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium are also investigated.
We derive the Friedmann-like equations in braneworld cosmology by imposing the first law of thermodynamics and Bekenstein's area-entropy formula on the apparent horizon of a Friedmann-Roberston-Walker universe in both Randall-Sundrum II gravity and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati gravity models. Israel's boundary condition plays an important role in our calculations in both cases, besides the first law of thermodynamics and Bekenstein's area-entropy formula. The results indicate that thermodynamics on the brane world knows the behaviors of gravity.
We consider a system of D0-branes in toroidally compactified space with interactions described by a Born-Infeld-type generalisation of the leading v^2 + v^4/r^{D-4} terms (D is the number of non-compact directions in M-theory, including the longitudinal one). This non-linear action can be interpreted as an all-loop large N super Yang-Mills effective action and has a remarkable scaling property. We first study the classical dynamics of a brane probe in the field of a central brane source and observe the interesting difference between the D=5 and D > 5 cases: for D >5 the center acts as a comple…
In this paper we study the speed of gravitational waves in a brane world scenario and show that if the extra dimension is space-like, the speed of the propagation of such waves is greater in the bulk than that on the brane. Therefore, the 4D Lorentz invariance is broken in the gravitational sector. A comparison is also made between the red shift of such waves and those of the electromagnetic waves on the brane. Such a comparison is essential for extracting the signature of the extra dimension and thus clarifying the question of maximal velocity of gravitational waves in the bulk.
In this paper we discuss thermodynamics of apparent horizon of an $n$-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe embedded in an $(n+1)$-dimensional AdS spacetime. By using the method of unified first law, we give the explicit entropy expression of the apparent horizon of the FRW universe. In the large horizon radius limit, this entropy reduces to the $n$-dimensional area formula, while in the small horizon radius limit, it obeys the $(n+1)$-dimensional area formula. We also discuss the corresponding bulk geometry and study the apparent horizon extended into the bulk. We calculate th…
We consider bulk fields coupled to the graviton in a Lorentz violating fashion. We expect that the overly tested Lorentz symmetry might set constraints on the induced Lorentz violation in the brane, and hence on the dynamics of the interaction of bulk fields on the brane. We also use the requirement for Lorentz symmetry to constrain the cosmological constant observed on the brane.

We discuss a topological reason why global symmetries are not conserved in quantum gravity, at least when the symmetry comes from compactification of a higher form symmetry. The mechanism is purely topological and does not require any explicit breaking term in the UV Lagrangian. Local current conservation does not imply global charge conservation in a sum over geometries in the path integral. We explicitly consider the shift symmetry of an axion-like field which originates from the compactification of a $p$-form gauge field. Our topological construction is motivated by the brane/black-brane co…
Using complexity=action proposal we study the growth rate of holographic complexity for Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries. We will consider both one and two sided black branes in an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravitational theory. We find that in either case Lloyd's bound is violated and the rate of growth of complexity saturates to a value which is greater than twice the mass of the corresponding black brane. This value reduces to the mass of the black brane in the isotropic case. We show that in two sided black brane the saturation happens from above while for one sided black bran…
Higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action are present in bosonic string theory leading to the potential causality violations recently pointed out by Camanho et al. We analyze in detail this question by considering high-energy string-brane collisions at impact parameters $b \le l_s$ (the string-length parameter) with $l_s \gg R_p$ (the characteristic scale of the D$p$-brane geometry). If we keep only the contribution of the massless states causality is violated for a set of initial states whose polarization is suitably chosen with respect to the impact parameter vector. Such …
In this work, we apply quantum corrected entropy function derived from the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) to the Holographic Equipartition Law to study the cosmological scenario in Randall-Sundrum (RS) II brane. An extra driving term has come up in the effective Friedmann equation for a homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat universe. Further, thermodynamic prescription of the universe constraints this term eventually with order equivalent to that of the cosmological constant.
In this paper we first obtain Friedmann equations for the $(n-1)$-dimensional brane embedded in the $(n+1)$-dimensional bulk, with intrinsic curvature term of the brane included in the action (DGP model). Then, we show that one can always rewrite the Friedmann equations in the form of the first law of thermodynamics, $dE=TdS+WdV$, at apparent horizon on the brane, regardless of whether there is the intrinsic curvature term on the brane or a cosmological constant in the bulk. Using the first law, we extract the entropy expression of the apparent horizon on the brane. We also show that in the ca…
