The LHCb experiment measured the time-dependent CP asymmetries $C_{KK}$ and $S_{KK}$ in $B_s\to K^+K^-$ decay. Combining with the corresponding CP asymmetries $C_{ππ}$ and $S_{ππ}$ in $B\to π^+π^-$ decay, we find that the size of $U$-spin breaking in this system is of order $20\%$. Moreover, the data suggest that these effects are dominated by factorizable contributions. We further study the constraints on new physics contributions to $b\to u\bar uq$ ($q=s,d$). New physics that is minimally flavor violating (MFV) cannot be distinguished from the Standard Model (SM) in these decays. However, new physics that is not MFV can mimic large $U$-spin breaking. Requiring that the $U$-spin breaking parameters remain below the size implied by the data leads to a lower bound of $5-10$ TeV on the scale of generic new physics. If the new physics is subject to the selection rules that follow from the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism or from General Minimal Flavor Violation (GMFV), the bound is relaxed to 2 TeV.
The most recent results on CP violation in $b$ hadrons obtained by the LHCb Collaboration with Run I and years 2015-2016 of Run II are reviewed. The different types of violation are covered by the studies presented in this paper.
Recent measurements of CPT violation and Lorentz symmetry breaking in $B^0-\bar{B}^0$ mixing and $B^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s$ mixing, obtained from data taken by the LHCb experiment, are highlighted. The results are expressed in terms of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) coefficients, which incorporate both CPT and Lorentz violation. Due to the large boost of the $B$ mesons at LHCb, the SME coefficients can be determined with high precision. The bounds on these coefficients are improved significantly compared to previous measurements.
Observation in astronomy suggests that our Universe contains an abundance of matter over antimatter, which can only be explained if the combined CP symmetry is violated. Studies of CP violation have driven the flavor physics with the aim of testing the Standard Model of particle physics and searching for physics beyond. CP violation is discovered in strange, beauty and charm meson systems, however no conclusive sign of CP violation in baryon decays has been observed yet. This review summarizes CP violation studies performed by the LHCb experiment in charmless decays and rare decays of beauty b…
The LHC is the new b-hadron factory and will be dominating flavour physics until the start of Belle II, and beyond in many decay modes. While the $B$ factories and Tevatron experiments are still analysing their data, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb are producing interesting new results in CP violation and rare decays, that set strong constraints on models beyond that SM and exhibit some discrepancies with the SM predictions. The LHCb collaboration used the LHC 50 ns ramp-up period of July 2015 to measure the double-differential $J/ψ$, $J/ψ$-from-$b$-hadron and charm cross-sections at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. …
Heavy flavour physics provides excellent opportunities to indirectly search for new physics at very high energy scales and to study hadron properties for deep understanding of the strong interaction. The LHCb experiment has been playing a leading role in the study of heavy flavour physics since the start of the LHC operations about ten years ago, and made a range of high-precision measurements and unexpected discoveries, which may have far-reaching implications on the field of particle physics. This review highlights a selection of the most influential physics results on CP violation, rare dec…
After playing a pivotal role in the birth of the Standard Model in the 70's, the study of charm physics has undergone a revival during the last decade, triggered by a wealth of precision measurements from the charm and $B$ factories, and from the CDF and especially the LHCb experiments. In this article, we sum up how the unique phenomenology of charmed hadrons can be used to test the Standard Model and we review the latest measurements performed in this field by the LHCb experiment. These include the historic first observations of $CP$ violation and of a nonzero mass difference between the cha…
An overview of current experimental bounds on $CPT$ violation in neutral meson mixing is given. New values for the $CPT$ asymmetry in the $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems are deduced from published BaBar, Belle and LHCb results. With dedicated analyses, LHCb will be able to further improve the bounds on $CPT$ violation in the $D^0$, $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems. Since $CPT$ violation implies violation of Lorentz invariance in an interacting local quantum field theory, the observed $CPT$ asymmetry will exhibit sidereal- and boost-dependent variations. Such $CPT$-violating and Lorentz-violating effects ar…
Our 2003 "Cicerone" had discussed charm dynamics with different directions and levels \cite{CICERONE}. Here we focus on two items, where the `landscape' has changed sizably. (A) The lifetimes \& semi-leptonic decays of charm hadrons show the impact of non-perturbative QCD and to which degree one can apply Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) for charm hadrons. It is more complex as we have learnt from 2019/20 data. (B) {\bf CP} asymmetry has been established in 2019 \cite{LHCbGuy}: $ΔA_{\bf CP} \equiv A_{\bf CP}(D^0 \to K^+K^-) - A_{\bf CP}(D^0 \to π^+π^-) $=$\, -\, (1.54 \pm 0.29 ) \cdot 10^{-3}$ is q…
The recent measurement of $ΔA_{CP}$ by the LHCb collaboration requires an ${\cal O}(10)$ enhancement coming from hadronic physics in order to be explained within the SM. We examine to what extent can NP models explain $ΔA_{CP}$ without such enhancements. We discuss the implications in terms of a low energy effective theory as well as in the context of several explicit NP models.
We perform an analysis within the Standard Model of $B^{0,+} \to K^{*0,+} μ^+ μ^-$ decays in light of the recent measurements from the LHCb experiment, showing that new data strengthen the need for sizable hadronic contributions and correlations among them. We then extend our analysis to New Physics via the Standard Model Effective Theory, and carry out a state-of-the-art fit of available $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ data, including possible hadronic contributions. We find the case of a fully left-handed operator standing out as the simplest scenario with a significance of almost $6σ$.
Recent LHCb data for time-dependent CP violation in $B_d^0 \to π^+π^-$ and $B^0_s\to K^+K^-$ show deviations from theoretical predictions. Besides their central values for $\mathcal C_{K^+K^-}$, $\mathcal S_{K^+K^-}$ and $\mathcal A^{ΔΓ}_{K^+K^-}$ violate quantum mechanic CPT invariant sum rule (CPT sum rule) prediction of $|\mathcal C_{K^+K^-}|^2 + |\mathcal S_{K^+K^-}| ^2 + |\mathcal A^{ΔΓ}_{K^+K^-}|^2 = 1$ (LHCb data imply the sum to be $0.67\pm 0.20$.), their values for $\mathcal C_{K^+ K^-}= 0.24\pm 0.06\pm {0.02}$ and $\mathcal C_{π^+ π^-} = - 0.24\pm 0.07\pm 0.01$ also show large violat…
We analyse the new physics implications of theoretically clean $b \to s$ observables in a model-independent approach and compare their coherence with the implications of other rare $B$-decays. A statistical comparison is done between the New Physics explanation and hadronic contributions as the source of the anomalies in angular observables of the $B\to K^*μμ$ decay. We make projections for future measurements that indicate that LHCb will be in the position to discover lepton non-universality via a single observable using the Run 3 data. The global fit of rare $B$-decays is given within a mult…
Quantitative understanding of CP violation is extremely important as naturalness reasoning strongly suggests that new physics should be accompanied by beyond the Standard Model CP-odd phases. In 2019 LHCb made the first $5 σ$ discovery of CP violation in the charm system, leading to the new world average $Δa_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}} = -0.00161 \pm 0.00028$. While some calculations have found this observation as requiring new physics, we suggest that scalar resonances nearby to $m_{D^0}$, in particular, $f_0(1710)$ and/or $f_0(1790)$ cause enhancements for CP violation within the SM. Thereby, our ca…
Beauty baryons are being observed in large numbers in the LHCb detector. The rich kinematic distributions of their multibody decays are therefore becoming accessible and provide us with new opportunities to search for CP violation. We analyse the angular distributions of some three- and four-body decays of spin-$1/2$ baryons using the Jacob-Wick helicity formalism. The asymmetries that provide access to small differences of CP-odd phases between decay amplitudes of identical CP-even phases are notably discussed. The understanding gained on processes featuring specific resonant intermediate sta…
Several experiments observed deviations from the Standard Model (SM) in the flavour sector: LHCb found a $4-5\,σ$ discrepancy compared to the SM in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ transitions (recently supported by an Belle analysis) and CMS reported a non-zero measurement of $h\toμτ$ with a significance of $2.4\,σ$. Furthermore, BELLE, BABAR and LHCb founds hints for the violation of flavour universality in $B\to D^{(*)}τν$. In addition, there is the long-standing discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Interestingly, all these anomalies are related to muons and taus, while the corresponding…
The $U$-spin symmetry provides a powerful tool to extract the angle $γ$ of the Unitarity Triangle and the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing phase $ϕ_s$ from CP violation in the $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$, $B^0_d\toπ^-π^+$ system. LHCb has obtained first results with uncertainties at the $7^\circ$ level. Due to $U$-spin-breaking corrections, it will be challenging to reduce the uncertainty below ${\cal O}(5^\circ)$ at Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We propose a new strategy, using $γ$ as input and utilizing $B^0_s\to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$, $B^0_d\to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays, which allows an extraction of $ϕ_s$ wit…
A rescaling of the SU(2) isospin triangles constraining $ϕ_2$ ($α$) that relies on measurements of the experimentally cleaner relative branching fractions, as opposed to those absolute, is proposed. Paving the way towards more systematically sustainable analysis, this method promises to eliminate a dominant systematic at Belle II amongst others, namely the uncertainty on the number of $B \bar B$ pairs in data. Furthermore, a $ϕ_2$ constraint in the $B \to ρρ$ system at LHCb that is more independent of Belle II input is shown to become viable even without a measurement of $C\!P$ violation in $B…
Very recently, the LHCb Collaboration observed the $CP$ violation (CPV) in the charm sector for the first time, with $ΔA_{CP}^{\rm dir}\equiv A_{CP}(D^0\to K^+K^-)-A_{CP}(D^0\to π^+π^-)=(-1.54\pm0.29)\times10^{-3}$. This result is consistent with our prediction of $ΔA_{CP}^{\rm SM}=(-0.57\sim -1.87)\times 10^{-3}$ obtained in the factorization-assisted topological-amplitude (FAT) approach in [PRD86,036012(2012)]. It implies that the current understanding of the penguin dynamics in charm decays in the Standard Model is reasonable. Motivated by the success of the FAT approach, we further suggest…
A simple analysis of time-dependent $B_s\to K^+K^-$ transitions, based on recent results from the LHCb experiment, is presented. The benefits of adopting a fully consistent theoretical description of the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing are stressed. It is shown that bounds on CPT violation in the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ system can be consistently obtained and that direct CP violation in $B_s\to K^+K^-$ can be robustly established, even in the presence of CPT violation in the mixing.
The latest measurements of rare $b\to s$ decays in the LHCb experiment have led to results in tension with the predictions of the standard model (SM), including a tentative indication of the violation of lepton flavor universality. Assuming that this situation will persist because of new physics, we explore some of the potential consequences in the context of the SM extended with the seesaw mechanism involving right-handed neutrinos plus effective dimension-six lepton-quark operators under the framework of minimal flavor violation. We focus on a couple of such operators which can accommodate t…
A recent proposal for explaining discrepancies in angular observables in the rare decay B --> K*mu+mu- with a gauged L_mu - L_tau current carried with it the prediction of lepton flavor universality violation in related B-meson decays. This prediction gained empirical support with a subsequent hint for lepton flavor universality violation in the B --> K l+l- decay by LHCb. In this short paper we fully quantify the prediction including the associated uncertainties. We also provide new predictions for a variety of additional observables sensitive to lepton flavor universality violation in B-meso…
We consider the recent LHCb result for $B_c\to J/ψτν$ in conjunction with the existing anomalies in $R(D)$ and $R(D^\star)$ within the framework of a right-handed current with enhanced couplings to the third generation. The model predicts a linear relation between the observables and their SM values in terms of two combinations of parameters. The strong constraints from $b\to s γ$ on $W-W^\prime$ mixing effectively remove one of the combinations of parameters resulting in an approximate proportionality between all three observables and their SM values. To accommodate the current averages for $…
In the Standard Model of particle physics, charged leptons of different flavour couple to the electroweak force carriers with the same interaction strength. This property, known as lepton flavour universality, was found to be consistent with experimental evidence in a wide range of particle decays. Lepton flavour universality can be tested by comparing branching fractions in ratios such as $R_K = \mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ μ^+ μ^-)/\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ e^+ e^-)$. This observable is measured using proton-proton collision data recorded with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadro…
These proceedings review direct CP violation in hadronic B decays. The experimental results include those related to the measurement of the unitarity triangle angle gamma using B->D(*)K(*) decays and measurements of charmless hadronic B decays. The results reported have been made by the BABAR, Belle and LHCb collaborations. Theoretical calculations related to these decays are also summarised. The importance of inputs from the charm sector in determining gamma from B->D(*)K(*) decays is discussed. In addition, the future prospects for these measurements will be reviewed.
Resonances and final state interactions (FSI) play a role in the formation of CP violation (CPV) constrained by CPT invariance. We provide a general formulation of CPV including resonances and FSI starting from the CPT constraint. Our discussion is elaborated within a simple $B$ decay model with the $ρ$ and $f_0(980)$ resonances plus a non resonant background including the $ππ\to KK$ coupled amplitude. We consider few illustrative examples to show the interference patterns appearing in the CP asymmetry, namely, that from the $ρ$ resonance plus a non-resonant amplitude, and that from the interf…
The first experimental evidence for direct CP violation in charm-quark decays has recently been presented by the LHCb collaboration in the difference between the D -> K+ K- and D -> pi+ pi- time-integrated CP asymmetries. We estimate the size of the effects that can be expected within the Standard Model and find that at leading order in 1/mc they are an order of magnitude smaller. However, tree-level annihilation type amplitudes are known to be large experimentally. This implies that certain formally 1/mc-suppressed penguin amplitudes could plausibly account for the LHCb measurement. Simultane…
Motivated by the recent LHCb observation of $CP$ violation in charm, we study $CP$ violation in the charmed baryon decays. A simple method to search for the $CP$ violation relations in the flavor $SU(3)$ limit, which is associated with a complete interchange of $d$ and $s$ quarks, is proposed. With this method, hundreds of $CP$ violation sum rules in the doubly and singly charmed baryon decays can be found. As examples, the $CP$ violation sum rules in two-body charmed baryon decays are presented. Some of the $CP$ violation sum rules could help the experiment to find better observables. As bypr…
There is growing evidence for deviation from the standard model predictions in the ratios between semi-tauonic and semi-leptonic $B$ decays, known as the $R(D^{(*)})$ puzzle. If the source of this non-universality is new physics, it is natural to assume that it also breaks CP symmetry. In this paper we study the possibility of measuring CP violation in semi-tauonic $B$ decays, exploiting interference between excited charm mesons. Given the current values of $R(D^{(*)})$, we find that our proposed CP-violation observable could be as large as about 10%. We discuss the experimental advantages of …
