This paper presents a study of the applicability boundary of the well-known quantum field theory. Based on the results of black hole thermodynamics, it is shown that this boundary may be lying at a level of the energy scales much lower than the Planck. The direct inferences from these results are given, specifically for estimation of a cosmological term within the scope of the quantum field theory.
We present recent results on the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) on spacetime manifolds with boundaries. As an application, novel quantum gravity corrections to the thermodynamics of black holes are discussed.
We formulate criteria of applicability of the Faddeev-Popov trick to gauge theories on manifolds with boundaries. With the example of Euclidean Maxwell theory we demonstrate that the path integral is indeed gauge independent when these criteria are satisfied, and depends on a gauge choice whenever these criteria are violated. In the latter case gauge dependent boundary conditions are required for a self-consistent formulation of the path intgral.
We address a long-standing problem of describing the thermodynamics of a charged accelerating black hole. We derive a standard first law of black hole thermodynamics, with the usual identification of entropy proportional to the area of the event horizon -- even though the event horizon contains a conical singularity. This result not only extends the applicability of black hole thermodynamics to realms previously not anticipated, it also opens a possibility for studying novel properties of an important class of exact radiative solutions of Einstein equations describing accelerated objects. We d…
We present a general analysis of the thermodynamics of spinning black p-branes of string and M-theory. This is carried out both for the asymptotically-flat and near-horizon case, with emphasis on the latter. In particular, we use the conjectured correspondence between the near-horizon brane solutions and field theories with 16 supercharges in various dimensions to describe the thermodynamic behavior of these field theories in the presence of voltages under the R-symmetry. Boundaries of stability are computed for all spinning branes both in the grand canonical and canonical ensemble, and the ef…
We consider scalar and axial gravitational perturbations of black hole solutions in brane world scenarios. We show that perturbation dynamics is surprisingly similar to the Schwarzschild case with strong indications that the models are stable. Quasinormal modes and late-time tails are discussed. We also study the thermodynamics of these scenarios verifying the universality of Bekenstein's entropy bound as well as the applicability of 't Hooft's brickwall method.
Using perturbative techniques, we investigate the existence and properties of a new static solution for the Einstein equation with a negative cosmological constant, which we call the deformed black hole. We derive a solution for a static and axisymmetric perturbation of the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole that is regular in the range from the horizon to spacelike infinity. The key result is that this perturbation simultaneously deforms the two boundary surfaces--i.e., both the horizon and spacelike two-surface at infinity. Then we discuss the Abbott-Deser mass and the Ashtekar-Magnon o…
We consider the geometry of anti-de-Sitter (AdS) black hole thermodynamics in four dimensions, where the equation of state in the extended phase space formalism allows explicit comparison with normal fluid systems. We show that for the two-dimensional parameter manifolds considered here, the scalar curvature is proportional to the thermodynamic volume. This allows us to critically examine the applicability of geometric methods in black hole thermodynamics in extended phase space. We show how several standard features that are expected to hold in normal fluid systems impose severe restrictions …
In this work we analyze how effects of finite size may modify the thermodynamics of a system of strongly interacting fermions that we model using an effective field theory with four-point interactions at finite temperature and density and look in detail at the case of a confining two-layer system. We compute the thermodynamic potential in the large-$N$ and mean-field approximations and adopt a zeta-function regularization scheme to regulate the divergences. Explicit expansions are obtained in different regimes of temperature and separation. The analytic structure of the potential is carefully …
A thermodynamic analysis of the black hole solutions coming from the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory (EMD) in 4D is done. By consider the canonical and grand-canonical ensemble, we apply standard method as well as a recent method known as Geometrothermodynamics (GTD). We are particularly interested in the characteristics of the so called phantom black hole solutions. We will analyze the thermodynamics of these solutions, the points of phase transition and their extremal limit. Also the thermodynamic stability is analyzed. We obtain a mismatch of the between the results of the GTD method when c…
The thermodynamics of a scalar field with a quartic interaction is studied within the linear delta expansion (LDE) method. Using the imaginary-time formalism the free energy is evaluated up to second order in the LDE. The method generates nonperturbative results that are then used to obtain thermodynamic quantities like the pressure. The phase transition pattern of the model is fully studied, from the broken to the symmetry restored phase. The results are compared with those obtained with other nonperturbative methods and also with ordinary perturbation theory. The results coming from the two …
We make an attempt to map the integrable boundary conditions for 2 dimensional non-linear O(N) $σ$-models. We do it at various levels: classically, by demanding the existence of infinitely many conserved local charges and also by constructing the double row transfer matrix from the Lax connection, which leads to the spectral curve formulation of the problem; at the quantum level, we describe the solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation and derive the Bethe-Yang equations. We then show how to connect the thermodynamic limit of the boundary Bethe-Yang equations to the spectral curve.
The high temperature asymptotics of thermodynamic functions of electromagnetic field subjected to boundary conditions with spherical and cylindrical symmetries are constructed by making use of a general expansion in terms of heat kernel coefficients and the related determinant. For this, some new heat kernel coefficients and determinants had to be calculated for the boundary conditions under consideration. The obtained results reproduce all the asymptotics derived by other methods in the problems at hand and involve a few new terms in the high temperature expansions. An obvious merit of this a…
In the present work we investigate the combined influence of magnetic background and boundaries on the thermodynamic properties of effective relativistic mean field models, like the so-called Walecka model. This is done by making use of generalized zeta-function approach and mean-field approximation at effective chemical equilibrium, focusing on the dependence with the size of compactified spatial dimension, the temperature and the magnetic field strength. The findings suggest a rich phase structure in the parameter space. The maintenance of long-range correlations is strongly affected under t…
We discuss general spinning p-branes of string and M-theory and use their thermodynamics along with the correspondence between near-horizon brane solutions and field theories with 16 supercharges to describe the thermodynamic behavior of these theories in the presence of voltages under the R-symmetry. The thermodynamics is used to provide two pieces of evidence in favor of a smooth interpolation function between the free energy at weak and strong coupling of the field theory. (i) A computation of the boundaries of stability shows that for the D2, D3, D4, M2 and M5-branes the critical values of…
In this paper we investigate the spectrum of $OSp(n|2m)$ quantum spin chains with free boundary conditions. We compute the surface free energy of these models which, similar to other properties in the thermodynamic limit including the effective central charge of the underlying conformal field theory, depends on $n-2m$ only. For several models in the regime $n-2m< 2$ we have studied the finite-size properties including the subleading logarithmic corrections to scaling. As in the case of periodic boundary conditions we find the existence of a tower of states with the same conformal dimension as …
Scrambling of quantum information can be conveniently quantified by so called out-of-time-order-correlators (OTOCs), whose measurements presents a formidable experimental challenge. Here we report on a method for the measurement of OTOCs based on the so-called two-point measurements scheme developed in the field of non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics. The scheme is of broader applicability than methods employed in current experiments and also provides a clear-cut interpretation of quantum information scrambling in terms of non-equilibrium fluctuations of thermodynamic quantities such as wor…
