We use a trick similar to Weinberg's for adiabatic modes, in a Manton approximation for general relativity on manifolds with spatial boundary. This results in a description of the slow-time dependent solutions as null geodesics on the space of boundary diffeomorphisms, with respect to a metric we prove to be composed solely of the boundary data. We show how the solutions in the bulk space is determined with the constraints of general relativity.
To give our description a larger perspective, we furthermore identify our resulting Lagrangian as a generalized version of the covariantized Lagrangian for continuum mechanics. We study the cases of 3+1 and 2+1 dimensions and show for the solutions we propose, the Hamiltonian constraint becomes the real homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation in the special case of two spatial dimensions.
In arXiv:1904.12869 it was shown how in an adiabatic limit the vacuum Einstein equations on a compact spatial region can be re-expressed as geodesic equations on the group of diffeomorphisms of the boundary. This is reminiscent of the program initiated by V. Arnold to reformulate models of continuum mechanics in terms of geodesic motion on diffeomorphism groups. We revisit some of the results of arXiv:1904.12869 in this light, pointing out parallels and differences with the typical examples in geometric continuum mechanics. We work out the case of 2 spatial dimensions in some detail.
We study the finite distance boundary symmetry current algebra of the most general first order theory of 3d gravity. We show that the space of quadratic generators contains diffeomorphisms but also a notion of dual diffeomorphisms, which together form either a double Witt or centreless BMS$_3$ algebra. The relationship with the usual asymptotic symmetry algebra relies on a duality between the null and angular directions, which is possible thanks to the existence of the dual diffeomorphisms.
The relationships between extended BMS symmetries at null infinity and Weinberg's soft theorems for gravitons and photons together with their subleading generalizations are developed using ambitwistor string theory. Ambitwistor space is the phase space of complex null geodesics in complexified space-time. We show how it can be canonically identified with the cotangent bundle of null infinity. BMS symmetries of null infinity lift to give a hamiltonian action on ambitwistor space, both in general dimension and in its twistorial 4-dimensional representation. General vertex operators arise from ha…
We construct the boundary phase space in $D$-dimensional Einstein gravity with a generic given co-dimension one null surface ${\cal N}$ as the boundary. The associated boundary symmetry algebra is a semi-direct sum of diffeomorphisms of $\cal N$ and Weyl rescalings. It is generated by $D$ towers of surface charges that are generic functions over $\cal N$. These surface charges can be rendered integrable for appropriate slicings of the phase space, provided there is no graviton flux through $\cal N$. In one particular slicing of this type, the charge algebra is the direct sum of the Heisenberg …
A canonical analysis for general relativity is performed on a null surface without fixing the diffeomorphism gauge, and the canonical pairs of configuration and momentum variables are derived. Next to the well-known spin-2 pair, also spin-1 and spin-0 pairs are identified. The boundary action for a null boundary segment of spacetime is obtained, including terms on codimension two corners.
We derive the null energy condition, understood as a constraint on the Einstein-frame Ricci tensor, from worldsheet string theory. For a closed bosonic string propagating in a curved geometry, the spacetime interpretation of the Virasoro constraint condition is precisely the null energy condition, to leading nontrivial order in the alpha-prime expansion. Thus the deepest origin of the null energy condition lies in worldsheet diffeomorphism invariance.
In the separate universe approach, an inhomogeneous universe is rephrased as a set of glued numerous homogeneous local patches. This is the essence of the gradient expansion and the $δN$ formalism, which have been widely used in solving a long wavelength evolution of the universe. In this paper, we show that the separate universe approach can be generically used, as long as a theory under consideration is local and preserves the spatial diffeomorphism invariance. Focusing on these two conditions, we also clarify the condition for the existence of the so-called Weinberg's adiabatic mode. Remark…
We provide a simple and straightforward procedure for defining a Virasoro algebra based on the diffeomorphisms near a null surface in a spacetime and obtain the entropy density of the null surface from its central charge. We use the off-shell Noether current corresponding to the diffeomorphism invariance of a gravitational Lagrangian $L(g_{ab},R_{abcd})$ and define the Virasoro algebra from its variation. This allows us to identify the central charge and the zero mode eigenvalue using which we obtain the entropy density of the Killing horizon. Our approach works for all Lanczos-Lovelock models…
Standard inflationary models yield a characteristic signature of a primordial power spectrum with a red tensor and scalar tilt. Nevertheless, Cannone et al recently suggested that, by breaking the assumption of spatial diffeomorphism invariance in the context of the effective field theory of inflation, a blue tensor spectrum can be achieved without violating the Null Energy Condition. In this context, we explore in which cases a blue tensor tilt can be obtained along with a red tilt in the scalar spectrum. Ultimately, we analyze under which conditions this model can reproduce the specific cons…
The covariant Hamiltonian formulation for general relativity is studied in terms of self-dual variables on a manifold with an internal and lightlike boundary. At this inner boundary, new canonical variables appear: a spinor and a spinor-valued two-form that encode the entire intrinsic geometry of the null surface. At a two-dimensional cross-section of the boundary, quasi-local expressions for the generators of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms, time translations, and dilatations of the null normal are introduced and written in terms of the new boundary variables. In addition, a generalisation of…
We show that the diffeomorphisms, which preserve the null nature for a generic null metric very near to the null surface, provide {\it noncommutative} Heisenberg algebra. This is the generalization of the earlier work (Phys. Rev. D95, 044020 (2017)) \cite{Majhi:2017fua}, done for the Rindler horizon. The present analysis revels that the algebra is very general as it is obtained for a generic null surface and is applicable for any spacetime horizon. Finally using these results, the entropy of the null surface is derived in the form of the Cardy formula. Our analysis is completely {\it off-shell…
The Kastor-Traschen metric is a time-dependent solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with positive cosmological constant $Λ$ which can be used to describe an arbitrary number of charged dynamical black holes. In this paper, we consider the null geodesic structure of this solution, in particular, focusing on the projection to the space of orbits of the timelike conformal retraction. It is found that these projected light rays arise as integral curves of a system of third order ordinary differential equations. This system is not uniquely defined, however, and we use the inherent freedom to …
We study three dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) in presence of a generic codimension one null boundary. The existence of the boundary is accounted for by enlarging the Hilbert space of the theory by degrees of freedom which only reside at the boundary, the boundary degrees of freedom. The solution phase space of this theory in addition to bulk massive chiral gravitons of the TMG, involves boundary modes which are labeled by surface charges associated with large diffeomorphisms. We show boundary degrees of freedom obey a local thermodynamic description over the solution phase spa…
We consider a recently proposed extension of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra to include arbitrary infinitesimal diffeomorphisms on a (2)-sphere. To realize this extended algebra as asymptotic symmetries, we work with an extended class of spacetimes in which the unphysical metric at null infinity is not universal. We show that the symplectic current evaluated on these extended symmetries is divergent in the limit to null infinity. We also show that this divergence cannot be removed by a local and covariant redefinition of the symplectic current. This suggests that such an extended symmetry alge…
In the double field theory, gauge symmetries are realized as generalized diffeomorphisms in the doubled spacetime. By consistency of the theory, dependence of tensor fields on the doubled coordinates is strongly constrained. This causes finite transformation law highly complicated, both technically and conceptually. In this paper, we propose a new, physically intuitive approach to finite gauge transformations by utilizing untwisted form of vector fields. In our approach, finite gauge transformation law is expressed in terms of diffeomorphisms on a maximal null subspace on which dynamical degre…
We study the covariant phase space of vacuum general relativity at the null boundary of causal diamonds. The past and future components of such a null boundary each have an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra consisting of diffeomorphisms of the $2$-sphere and boost supertranslations corresponding to angle-dependent rescalings of affine parameter along the null generators. Associated to these symmetries are charges and fluxes obtained from the covariant phase space formalism using the prescription of Wald and Zoupas. By analyzing the behavior of the spacetime metric near the corners of the c…
It has been argued that the symmetries of gravity at null infinity should include a Diff$(S^2)$ factor associated to diffeomorphisms on the celestial sphere. However, the standard phase space of gravity does not support the action of such transformations. Building on earlier work by Laddha and one of the authors, we present an extension of the phase space of gravity at null infinity on which Diff$(S^2)$ acts canonically. The Poisson brackets of supertranslation and Diff$(S^2)$ charges reproduce the generalized BMS algebra introduced in arXiv:1408.2228 .
The holographic principle implies a vast reduction in the number of degrees of freedom of quantum gravity. This idea can be made precise in AdS_3, where the the stringy or gravitational exclusion principle asserts that certain perturbative excitations are not present in the exact quantum spectrum. We show that this effect is visible directly in the bulk gravity theory: the norm of the offending linearized state is zero or negative. When the norm is negative, the theory is signaling its own breakdown as an effective field theory; this provides a perturbative bulk explanation for the stringy exc…
We investigate adiabatic solutions to general relativity for a spacetime with spatial slices with boundary, by Manton approximation. This approximation tells us for a theory with a Lagrangian in the natural form, a motion that is described as a slow motion on the space of vacua-static solutions that minimize the energy -- is a good approximate solution. To apply this to the case of general relativity we first bring it to the natural form by splitting space and time and choosing Gaussian normal coordinates, where a spacetime is described by the metric on its spatial slices. Then following Manto…

The asymptotic symmetry group (ASG) at future null infinity (I^+) of four-dimensional de Sitter spacetimes is defined and shown to be given by the group of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms acting on I^+. Finite charges are constructed for each choice of ASG generator together with a two-surface on I^+. A conservation equation is derived relating the evolution of the charges with the radiation flux through I^+.
The memory effect is a prediction of general relativity on the same footing as the existence of gravitational waves. The memory effect is understood at future null infinity as a transition induced by null radiation from a Poincaré vacuum to another vacuum. Those are related by a supertranslation, which is a fundamental symmetry of asymptotically flat spacetimes. In this essay, I argue that finite supertranslation diffeomorphisms should be extended into the bulk spacetime consistently with canonical charge conservation. It then leads to fascinating geometrical features of gravitational Poincaré…

We study asymptotically flat space-times in 3 dimensions for Einstein gravity near future null infinity and show that the boundary is described by Carrollian geometry. This is used to add sources to the BMS gauge corresponding to a non-trivial boundary metric in the sense of Carrollian geometry. We then solve the Einstein equations in a derivative expansion and derive a general set of equations that take the form of Ward identities. Next, it is shown that there is a well-posed variational problem at future null infinity without the need to add any boundary term. By varying the on-shell action …
Starting from an affinely connected space, we consider a model of gravity whose fundamental field is the connection. We build up the action using as sole premise the invariance under diffeomorphisms, and study the consequences of a cosmological ansatz for the affine connection in the torsion-free sector. Although the model is built without requiring a metric, we show that the nondegenerated Ricci curvature of the affine connection can be interpreted as an \emph{emergent} metric on the manifold. We show that there exists a parametrization in which the \((r,φ)\)-restriction of the geodesics coin…
We argue that the holographic principle may be hinted at already from low-energy considerations, assuming diffeomorphism invariance, quantum mechanics and Minkowski-like causality. We consider the states of finite spacelike hypersurfaces in a diffeomorphism-invariant QFT. A low-energy regularization is assumed. We note a natural dependence of the Hilbert space on a codimension-2 boundary surface. The Hilbert product is defined dynamically, in terms of transition amplitudes which are described by a path integral. We show that a canonical basis is incompatible with these assumptions, which opens…
We describe a midi-superspace quantization scheme for generic single horizon black holes in which only the spatial diffeomorphisms are fixed. The remaining Hamiltonian constraint yields an infinite set of decoupled eigenvalue equations: one at each spatial point. The corresponding operator at each point is the product of the outgoing and ingoing null convergences, and describes the scale invariant quantum mechanics of a particle moving in an attractive $1/X^2$ potential. The variable $X$ that is analoguous to particle position is the square root of the conformal mode of the metric. We quantize…
We consider General Relativity (GR) on a space-time whose spatial slices are compact manifolds $M$ with non-empty boundary $\partial M$. We argue that this theory has a non-trivial space of `vacua', consisting of spatial metrics obtained by an action on a reference flat metric by diffeomorpisms that are non-trivial at the boundary. In an adiabatic limit the Einstein equations reduce to geodesic motion on this space of vacua with respect to a particular pseudo-Riemannian metric that we identify. We show how the momentum constraint implies that this metric is fully determined by data on the boun…
