Starting from an affinely connected space, we consider a model of gravity whose fundamental field is the connection. We build up the action using as sole premise the invariance under diffeomorphisms, and study the consequences of a cosmological ansatz for the affine connection in the torsion-free sector. Although the model is built without requiring a metric, we show that the nondegenerated Ricci curvature of the affine connection can be interpreted as an \emph{emergent} metric on the manifold. We show that there exists a parametrization in which the \((r,φ)\)-restriction of the geodesics coincides with that of the Friedman--Robertson--Walker model. Additionally, for connections with nondegenerated Ricci we are able to distinguish between space-, time- and null-like self-parallel curves, providing a way to differentiate \emph{trajectories} of massive and massless particles.
We study null geodesic congruences (NGCs) in the presence of spacetime torsion, recovering and extending results in the literature. Only the highest spin irreducible component of torsion gives a proper acceleration with respect to metric NGCs, but at the same time obstructs abreastness of the geodesics. This means that it is necessary to follow the evolution of the drift term in the optical equations, and not just shear, twist and expansion. We show how the optical equations depend on the non-Riemannian components of the curvature, and how they reduce to the metric ones when the highest spin c…
For a particular type of {\bf k-}essence scalar field, the {\bf k-}essence emergent gravity metric is exactly mapped on to the Barriola-Vilenkin (BV) type metric for Schwarzschild background established by Gangopadhyay and Manna. Based on the S. Chandrasekhar, we report the exciting features of the time-like geodesic structure in the presence of dark energy in an emergent gravity scenario for this Barriola-Vilenkin type metric. We trace the different kinds of trajectories for time-like geodesic in the presence of dark energy for the {\bf k-}essence emergent Barriola-Vilenkin spacetime, which i…
We discuss how inflation can emerge from a four-fermion interaction induced by torsion. Inflation can arise from coupling torsion to Standard Model fermions, without any need of introducing new scalar particles beyond the Standard Model. Within this picture, the inflaton field can be a composite field of the SM-particles and arises from a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio mechanism in curved space-time, non-minimally coupled with the Ricci scalar. The model we specify predicts small value of the r-parameter, namely $r\sim 10^{-4} ÷10^{-2}$, which nonetheless would be detectable by the next generation of expe…
The method of Hamilton-Jacobi is used to obtain geodesics around non- Riemannian planar torsional defects. It is shown that by perturbation expansion in the Cartan torsion the geodesics obtained are parabolic curves along the plane x-z when the wall is located at the plane x-y.In the absence of defects the geodesics reduce to straight lines. The family of parabolas depend on the torsion parameter and describe a gravitationally repulsive domain wall.Torsion here plays the role of the Burgers vector in solid state physics.
Constant-torsion emergent gravity (CTEG) has a Lagrangian quadratic in curvature and torsion, but without any Einstein--Hilbert term. CTEG is motivated by a unitary, power-counting renormalisable particle spectrum. The timelike axial torsion adopts a vacuum expectation value, and the Friedmann cosmology emerges dynamically on this torsion condensate. We show that this mechanism -- and the whole background cosmology of CTEG -- may be understood through the effective potential of a canonical single scalar field model. The effective potential allows for hilltop inflation in the early Universe. In…
We explore emergent geometry of the spacetime at the microscopic scale by adiabatic transport of a quasi-coherent state of a fermionic string, with quantum spacetime described by the matrix theory (BFSS matrix model). We show that the generator of the Berry phase is the shift vector of the spacetime foliation by spacelike surfaces associated with the quasi-coherent state. The operator-valued generator of the geometric phase of weak adiabatic transport is the Lorentz connection of the emergent geometry which is not torsion free at the microscopic scale. The effects of the torsion seem consisten…
The problem of a rigorous theory of singularities in space-times with torsion is addressed. We define geodesics as curves whose tangent vector moves by parallel transport. This is different from what other authors have done, because their definition of geodesics only involves the Christoffel connection, though studying theories with torsion. We propose a preliminary definition of singularities which is based on timelike or null geodesic incompleteness, even though for theories with torsion the paths of particles are not geodesics. The study of the geodesic equation for cosmological models with…
We discuss vacuum condensates associated with emergent QED and with torsion, as well as the possible role of the Kodama wave function in quantum cosmology.
In graphene in the presence of strain the elasticity theory metric naturally appears. However, this is not the one experienced by fermionic quasiparticles. Fermions propagate in curved space, whose metric is defined by expansion of the effective Hamiltonian near the topologically protected Fermi point. We discuss relation between both types of metric for different parametrizations of graphene surface. Next, we extend our consideration to the case, when the dislocations are present. We consider the situation, when the deformation is described by elasticity theory and calculate both torsion and …
I investigate the possibility of the propagation of neutrino with superluminal speed through matter in the context of the relation between gravity, spin and torsion. Using a lemma of Penrose and earlier works on the relation between spin, torsion and gravity I glimpse on a frame work in which superluminal speed of the neutrinos moving through matter become possible. In presence of torsoin neutrinos are found to follow spacelike geodesics by tunneling through the light cone into the spacelike region and consequently appear to have superluminal speed in our timelike world, whereas photons always…
We argue that the geodesic hypothesis based on the autoparalllels of the Levi-Civita connection may need refinement in the scalar- tensor theories of gravity. Based on a reformulation of the Brans- Dicke theory in terms of a connection with torsion determined dynamically in terms of the gradient of the Brans-Dicke scalar field, we compute the perihelion shift in the orbit of Mercury on the alternative hypothesis that its worldline is an autoparallel of a connection with torsion. If the Brans-Dicke scalar field couples significantly to matter and test particles move on such worldlines, the curr…
We investigate an emergent gravity in $(4+1)$ dimensions underlying a geometric torsion ${\cal H}_3$ in $1.5$ order formulation. We show that an emergent pair-symmetric $4$th order curvature tensor underlying a NS field theory governs a torsion free geometry and is identified as the Riemann type tensor. Interestingly a pair anti-symmetric $4$th order tensor is shown to incorporate a dynamical correction underlying a ${\cal H}_3$ gauge potential and is identified with a non-perturbative correction. The non-perturbative term in the emergent action is shown to be described by a $U(1)$ gauge invar…
When spacetime torsion is present, geodesics and autoparallels generically do not coincide. In this work, the well-known method that uses Killing vectors to solve the geodesic equations is generalized for autoparallels. The main definition is that of T-Killing vectors: vector fields such that, when their index is lowered with the metric, have vanishing symmetric derivative when acted with a torsionfull and metric-compatible derivative. The main property of T-Killing vectors is that their contraction with the autoparallels' tangents are constant along these curves. As an example, in a static an…
Spacetimes with everywhere vanishing curvature tensor, but with torsion different from zero only on world sheets that represent closed loops in ordinary space are presented, also defects along open curves with end points at infinity are studied. The case of defects along timelike loops is also considered and the geodesics in these spaces are briefly discussed.
A surprisingly simple holographic explanation for the low dark energy density is suggested. I derive the Einstein-Cartan disclination curvature tetrads and the physically independent dislocation torsion gap spin connections from an "M-Matrix" of non-closed Cartan 1-forms made from 8 Goldstone phase 0-forms of the vacuum ODLRO condensate inflation field in which the non-compact 10-parameter Poincare symmetry group is locally gauged for all invariant matter field actions. Quantum gravity zero point vacuum fluctuations should be renormalizable at the spin 1 tetrad level where there is a natural s…
We argue that compatibility with elementary particle physics requires gravitational theories with torsion to be unable to distinguish between orbital angular momentum and spin. An important consequence of this principle is that spinless particles must move along autoparallel trajectories, not along geodesics.
Here we treat the problem: given a torsion-free connection do its geodesics, as unparametrised curves, coincide with the geodesics of an Einstein metric? We find projective invariants such that the vanishing of these is necessary for the existence of such a metric, and in generic settings the vanishing of these is also sufficient. We also obtain results for the problem of metrisability (without the Einstein condition): We show that the odd Chern type invariants of an affine connection are projective invariants that obstruct the existence of a projectively related Levi-Civita connection. In add…
The paper deals with cosmological solutions describing different phases of the Universe for the homogeneous and isotropic FLRW model of the Universe with torsion. Normally, torsion field is not suitable for maximally symmetric space time model. However, one may use a specific profile of vectorial torsion field, derived from a scalar function. By proper choices of the torsion scalar function, it is shown that a continuous cosmic evolution starting from the emergent scenario to the present late time acceleration is possible. Also thermodynamics of the system is analyzed and equivalence with Eins…
We study the gravitomagnetic effect in the context of absolute parallelism with the use of a modified geodesic equation via a free parameter b. We calculate the time difference in two atomic clocks orbiting the Earth in opposite directions and find a small correction due to the coupling between the torsion of the spacetime and the internal structure of atomic clocks measured by the free parameter.
Generalization of an idea may lead to very interesting result. Learning how torsion influences on tidal force reveals similarity between tidal equation for geodesic and the Killing equation of second type. The relationship between tidal acceleration, curvature and torsion gives an opportunity to measure torsion.
A theory of gravitation in 4D is presented with strings used in the material action in $U_4$ spacetime. It is shown that the string naturally gives rise to torsion. It is also shown that the equation of motion a string follows from the Bianchi identity, gives the identical result as the Noether conservation laws, and follows a geodesic only in the lowest order approximation. In addition, the conservation laws show that strings naturally have spin, which arises not from their motion but from their one dimensional structure.
Here we consider a variant of the 5 dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory within the framework of Einstein-Cartan formalism that includes torsion. By imposing a set of constraints on torsion and Ricci rotation coefficients, we show that the torsion components are completely expressed in terms of the metric. Moreover, the Ricci tensor in 5D corresponds exactly to what one would obtain from torsion-free general relativity on a 4D hypersurface. The contributions of the scalar and vector fields of the standard K-K theory to the Ricci tensor and the affine connections are completely nullified by the cont…
We revisit a non-perturbation theory of quantum gravity in $1.5$ order underlying an emergent gravitational pair of $(4{\bar 4})$-brane with a renewed interest. In particular the formulation is governed by a geometric torsion ${\cal H}_3$ in second order with an on-shell NS form in first order. Interestingly the gravitational pair is sourced by a Kalb-Ramond two form CFT on a $D_5$-brane in $d$$=$$10$ type IIB superstring theory. We show that a generic form theory containing a CFT sector in $d=6$ bulk may be described by a boundary ${\rm AdS}_5$ with a quintessence Q. Analysis reveals that the…
In this work, we show that it is possible to study the notion of geodesic deviation equation in $f(T)$ gravity, in spite of the fact that in teleparallel gravity there is no notion of geodesics, and the torsion is responsible for the appearance of gravitational interaction. In this regard, we obtain the GR equivalent equations for $f(T)$ gravity which are in the modified gravity form such as $f(R)$ gravity. Then, we obtain the GDE within the context of this modified gravity. In this way, the obtained geodesic deviation equation will correspond to the $f(T)$ gravity. Eventually, we extend the c…
The mantra about gravitation as curvature is a misnomer. The curvature tensor for a standard of rest does not describe acceleration in a gravitational field but the \underline{gradient} of the acceleration (e.g. geodesic deviation). The gravitational field itself (Einstein 1907) is essentially an accelerated reference system. It is characterized by a field of orthonormal four-legs in a Riemann space with Lorentz metric. By viewing vectors at different events having identical leg-components as parallel (teleparallelism) the geometry in a gravitational field defines torsion. This formulation of …
I explain the geometric basis for the recently-discovered nonholonomic mapping principle which permits deriving laws of nature in spacetimes with curvature and torsion from those in flat spacetime, thus replacing and extending Einstein's equivalence principle. As an important consequence, it yields a new action principle for determining the equation of motion of a free spinless point particle in such spacetimes. Surprisingly, this equation contains a torsion force, although the action involves only the metric. This force makes trajectories autoparallel rather than geodesic. Its geometric origi…
A non-topological Lorentz gauge model of gravity with torsion based on Gauss-Bonnet type Lagrangian is considered. The Lagrangian differs from the Lovelock term in four-dimensional space-time and has a number of interesting features. We demonstrate that the model admits a propagating torsion unlike the case of the topological Lovelock gravity. Due to additional symmetries of the proposed Gauss-Bonnet type Lagrangian the torsion has a reduced set of dynamical degrees of freedom corresponding to the spin two field, U(1) gauge vector field and spin zero field. A remarkable feature is that the kin…
We consider a theory of gravity with a hidden extra-dimension and metric-dependent torsion. A set of physically motivated constraints are imposed on the geometry so that the torsion stays confined to the extra-dimension and the extra-dimension stays hidden at the level of four dimensional geodesic motion. At the kinematic level, the theory maps on to General Relativity, but the dynamical field equations that follow from the action principle deviate markedly from the standard Einstein equations. We study static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions and homogeneous-isotropic cosmological soluti…
The lecture explains the geometric basis for the recently-discovered nonholonomic mapping principle which specifies certain laws of nature in spacetimes with curvature and torsion from those in flat spacetime, thus replacing and extending Einstein's equivalence principle. An important consequence is a new action principle for determining the equation of motion of a free spinless point particle in such spacetimes. Surprisingly, this equation contains a torsion force, although the action involves only the metric. This force changes geodesic into autoparallel trajectories, which are a direct mani…
The Einstein-Cartan equations in first-order action of torsion are considered. From Belinfante-Rosenfeld equation special consistence conditions are derived for the torsion parameters relating them to the metric. Inside matter the torsion is given by the spin which leads to an extended Oppenhaimer-Volkov equation. Outside matter a second solution is found besides the torsion-free Schwarzschild one with the torsion completely determined by the metric and vice-versa. This solution is shown to be of non-spherical origin and its uniqueness with respect to the consistence is demonstrated. Unusual p…
We elaborate the description of the semi-classical gravity sector of Yang-Mills matrix models on a covariant quantum FLRW background. The basic geometric structure is a frame, which arises from the Poisson structure on an underlying $S^2$ bundle over space-time. The equations of motion for the associated Weitzenböck torsion obtained in arXiv:2002.02742 are rewritten in the form of Yang-Mills-type equations for the frame. An effective action is found which reproduces these equations of motion, which contains an Einstein-Hilbert term coupled to a dilaton, an axion and a Maxwell-type term for the…
We consider graphene in the presence of external magnetic field and elastic deformations that cause emergent magnetic field. The total magnetic field results in the appearance of Landau levels in the spectrum of quasiparticles. In addition, the quasiparticles in graphene experience the emergent gravity. We consider the particular choice of elastic deformation, which gives constant emergent magnetic field and vanishing torsion. Emergent gravity may be considered as perturbation. We demonstrate that the corresponding first order approximation affects the energies of the Landau levels only throug…
The geodesic deviation equation has been investigated in the framework of $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity, where $T$ denotes the torsion and $\mathcal{T}$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively. The FRW metric is assumed and the geodesic deviation equation has been established following the General Relativity approach in the first hand and secondly, by a direct method using the modified Friedmann equations. Via fundamental observers and null vector fields with FRW background, we have generalized the Raychaudhuri equation and the Mattig relation in $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity. Furth…
We describe an action principle, within the framework of the Eddington gravity, which incorporates the matter fields in a simple manner. Interestingly, the gravitational field equations derived from this action is identical to the Einstein's equations, in contrast with the earlier attempts in the literature. The cosmological constant arises as an integration constant in this approach. In fact, the derivation of the field equations demands the existence of a non-zero cosmological constant, thereby providing the raison d'être for a non-zero cosmological constant, implied by the current observati…
A new Lorentz gauge gravity model with R^2-type Lagrangian is proposed. In the absence of classical torsion the model admits a topological phase with an arbitrary metric. We analyze the equations of motion in constant curvature space-time background using the Lagrange formalism and demonstrate that the model possesses a minimal set of dynamic degrees of freedom for the torsion. Surprisingly, the number of torsion dynamic degrees of freedom equals the number of physical degrees of freedom for the metric tensor. An interesting feature of the model is that the spin two mode of torsion becomes dyn…
A global monopole in dilatonic Einstein-Cartan gravity is presented. A linearized solution representing a global monopole interacting with a massless dilaton is found where Cartan torsion does not interact with the monopole Higgs field.Computation of the geodesic equation shows that the monopole-dilaton system generates a repulsive gravitational field. The solution is shown to break the linear approximation for certain values of torsion.
We revisit the Riemann-Cartan geometry in the context of recent higher-dimensional theories of spacetime. After introducing the concept of torsion in a modern geometrical language we present some results that represent extensions of Riemannian theorems. We consider the theory of local embeddings and submanifolds in the context of Riemann-Cartan geometries and show how a Riemannian spacetime may be locally and isometrically embedded in a bulk with torsion. As an application of this result, we discuss the problem of classical confinement and the stability of motion of particles and photons in th…
I show that massive-particle dynamics can be simulated by a weak, spherical, external perturbation on a potential flow in an ideal fluid. The effective Lagrangian is of the form mc^2L(U^2/c^2), where U is the velocity of the particle relative to the fluid and c the speed of sound. This can serve as a model for emergent relativistic inertia a la Mach's principle with m playing the role of inertial mass, and also of analog gravity where it is also the passive gravitational mass. m depends on the particle type and intrinsic structure, while L is universal: For D dimensional particles L is proport…
At first we introduce the space-time manifold and we compare some aspects of Riemannian and Lorentzian geometry such as the distance function and the relations between topology and curvature. We then define spinor structures in general relativity, and the conditions for their existence are discussed. The causality conditions are studied through an analysis of strong causality, stable causality and global hyperbolicity. In looking at the asymptotic structure of space-time, we focus on the asymptotic symmetry group of Bondi, Metzner and Sachs, and the b-boundary construction of Schmidt. The Hami…
Teleparallel Gravity (TG) describes gravitation as a torsional- rather than curvature-based effect. As in curvature-based constructions of gravity, several different formulations can be proposed, one of which is the Teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR) which is dynamically equivalent to GR. In this work, we explore the evolution of a spatially homogeneous collapsing stellar body in the context of two important modifications to TEGR, namely f (T) gravity which is the TG analogue of f (R) gravity, and a nonminimal coupling with a scalar field which has become popular in TG for it…
We find that the target space of two-dimensional (4,0) supersymmetric sigma models with torsion coupled to (4,0) supergravity is a QKT manifold, that is, a quaternionic Kähler manifold with torsion. We give four examples of geodesically complete QKT manifolds one of which is a generalisation of the LeBrun geometry. We then construct the twistor space associated with a QKT manifold and show that under certain conditions it is a Kähler manifold with a complex contact structure. We also show that, for every 4k-dimensional QKT manifold, there is an associated 4(k+1)-dimensional hyper-Kähler one.
Recent work has established the existence of stable quantum phases of matter described by symmetric tensor gauge fields, which naturally couple to particles of restricted mobility, such as fractons. We focus on a minimal toy model of a rank 2 tensor gauge field, consisting of fractons coupled to an emergent graviton (massless spin-2 excitation). We show how to reconcile the immobility of fractons with the expected gravitational behavior of the model. First, we reformulate the fracton phenomenon in terms of an emergent center of mass quantum number, and we show how an effective attraction arise…
Although the autoparallel curves and the geodesics coincide in the Riemannian geometry in which only the curvature is nonzero among the nonmetricity, the torsion and the curvature, they define different curves in the non-Riemannian ones. We give a novel approach to autoparallel curves and geodesics for theories of the symmetric teleparallel gravity written in the coincident gauge. Then we apply our autoparallel equation to a Schwarzschild-type metric and give remarks about dark matter and orbit equation.
