We estimate best-approximation errors using vector-valued finite elements for fields with low regularity in the scale of fractional-order Sobolev spaces. By assuming additionally that the target field has a curl or divergence property, we establish upper bounds on these errors that can be localized to the mesh cells. These bounds are derived using the quasi-interpolation errors with or without boundary prescription derived in [A. Ern and J.-L. Guermond, ESAIM Math. Model. Numer. Anal., 51 (2017), pp.~1367--1385]. By using the face-to-cell lifting operators analyzed in [A. Ern and J.-L. Guermond, Found. Comput. Math., (2021)], and exploiting the additional assumption made on the curl or the divergence of the target field, a localized upper bound on the quasi-interpolation error is derived. As an illustration, we show how to apply these results to the error analysis of the curl-curl problem associated with Maxwell's equations.
Divergence-free (div-free) and curl-free vector fields are pervasive in many areas of science and engineering, from fluid dynamics to electromagnetism. A common problem that arises in applications is that of constructing smooth approximants to these vector fields and/or their potentials based only on discrete samples. Additionally, it is often necessary that the vector approximants preserve the div-free or curl-free properties of the field to maintain certain physical constraints. Div/curl-free radial basis functions (RBFs) are a particularly good choice for this application as they are meshfr…
We present a local construction of H(curl)-conforming piecewise polynomials satisfying a prescribed curl constraint. We start from a piecewise polynomial not contained in the H(curl) space but satisfying a suitable orthogonality property. The procedure employs minimizations in vertex patches and the outcome is, up to a generic constant independent of the underlying polynomial degree, as accurate as the best-approximations over the entire local versions of H(curl). This allows to design guaranteed, fully computable, constant-free, and polynomial-degree-robust a posteriori error estimates of Pra…
Several important PDE systems, like magnetohydrodynamics and computational electrodynamics, are known to support involutions where the divergence of a vector field evolves in divergence-free or divergence constraint-preserving fashion. Recently, new classes of PDE systems have emerged for hyperelasticity, compressible multiphase flows, so-called first order reductions of the Einstein field equations, or a novel first order hyperbolic reformulation of Schrödinger's equation, to name a few, where the involution in the PDE supports curl-free or curl constraint-preserving evolution of a vector fie…

In this paper we present three different numerical approaches to account for curl-type involution constraints in hyperbolic partial differential equations for continuum physics. All approaches have a direct analogy to existing and well-known divergence-preserving schemes for the Maxwell and MHD equations. The first method consists in a generalization of the Godunov-Powell terms, which means adding suitable multiples of the involution constraints to the PDE system in order to achieve the symmetric Godunov form. The second method is an extension of the generalized Lagrangian multiplier (GLM) app…
The analysis of electromagnetic scattering in the isogeometric analysis (IGA) framework based on Loop subdivision has long been restricted to simply-connected geometries. The inability to analyze multiply-connected objects is a glaring omission. In this paper, we address this challenge. IGA provides seamless integration between the geometry and analysis by using the same basis set to represent both. In particular, IGA methods using subdivision basis sets exploit the fact that the basis functions used for surface description are smooth (with continuous second derivatives) almost everywhere. On …
We introduce two a posteriori error estimators for Nédélec finite element discretizations of the curl-curl problem. These estimators pertain to a new Prager-Synge identity and an associated equilibration procedure. They are reliable and efficient, and the error estimates are polynomial-degree-robust. In addition, when the domain is convex, the reliability constants are fully computable. The proposed error estimators are also cheap and easy to implement, as they are computed by solving divergence-constrained minimization problems over edge patches. Numerical examples highlight our key findings,…
In this work, we introduce two novel reformulations of a recent weakly hyperbolic model for two-phase flow with surface tension. In the model, the tracking of phase boundaries is achieved by using a vector interface field, rather than a scalar tracer, so that the surface-force stress tensor can be expressed as an algebraic function of the state variables, without requiring the computation of gradients of the tracer. An interesting and important feature of the model is that this interface field obeys a curl involution constraint, that is, the vector field is required to be curl-free at all time…
We are interested in the numerical reconstruction of a vector field with prescribed divergence and curl in a general domain of R 3 or R 2 , not necessarily contractible. To this aim, we introduce some basic concepts of finite element exterieur calculus and rely heavily on recent results of P. Leopardi and A. Stern. The goal of the paper is to take advantage of the links between usual vector calculus and exterior calculus and show the interest of the exterior calculus framework, without too much prior knowledge of the subject. We start by describing the method used for contractible domains and …

A simple and general framework for the construction of exactly div-curl-grad compatible discontinuous Galerkin finite element schemes on unstructured simplex meshes
In this paper we propose an extension of the generalized Lagrangian multiplier method (GLM) of Munz et al. (JCP 2000, JCP 2002), which was originally conceived for the numerical solution of the Maxwell and MHD equations with divergence-type involutions, to the case of hyperbolic PDE systems with curl-type involutions. The key idea here is to solve an augmented PDE system, in which curl errors propagate away via a Maxwell-type evolution system. The new approach is first presented on a simple model problem, in order to explain the basic ideas. Subsequently, we apply it to a strongly hyperbolic f…
$\boldsymbol{H}(\textbf{curl})$-reconstruction of piecewise polynomial fields with application to $hp$-a posteriori nonconforming error analysis for Maxwell's equations
We present compatible finite element space discretizations for the ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations. The magnetic field is considered both in div- and curl-conforming spaces, leading to a strongly or weakly preserved zero-divergence condition, respectively. The equations are discretized in space such that transfers between the kinetic, internal, and magnetic energies are consistent, leading to a preserved total energy. We also discuss further adjustments to the discretization required to additionally achieve magnetic helicity preservation. Finally, we describe new transport sta…
We address fundamental aspects in the approximation theory of vector-valued finite element methods, using finite element exterior calculus as a unifying framework. We generalize the Clément interpolant and the Scott-Zhang interpolant to finite element differential forms, and we derive a broken Bramble-Hilbert Lemma. Our interpolants require only minimal smoothness assumptions and respect partial boundary conditions. This permits us to state local error estimates in terms of the mesh size. Our theoretical results apply to curl-conforming and divergence-conforming finite element methods over sim…

We consider the numerical approximation of Maxwell's equations in time domain by a second order $H(curl)$ conforming finite element approximation. In order to enable the efficient application of explicit time stepping schemes, we utilize a mass-lumping strategy resulting from numerical integration in conjunction with the finite element spaces introduced by Elmkies and Joly. We prove that this method is second order accurate if the true solution is divergence free, but the order of accuracy reduces to one in the general case. We then propose a modification of the finite element space, which yie…
We consider the problem of coarse-graining in the context of finite-volume fluid models. If a variable is defined on a high-resolution grid it may be coarse-grained so that it is defined on a grid of lower resolution. In general this will cause some information about the variable to be lost. In particular, horizontal divergences, gradients or other operators calculated on the coarse grid after projecting may differ from those calculated on the fine grid. In some cases we are able to choose averaging weights for coarse-graining such that the coarse-grid operators will give a result approximatin…
