We introduce two a posteriori error estimators for Nédélec finite element discretizations of the curl-curl problem. These estimators pertain to a new Prager-Synge identity and an associated equilibration procedure. They are reliable and efficient, and the error estimates are polynomial-degree-robust. In addition, when the domain is convex, the reliability constants are fully computable. The proposed error estimators are also cheap and easy to implement, as they are computed by solving divergence-constrained minimization problems over edge patches. Numerical examples highlight our key findings, and show that both estimators are suited to drive adaptive refinement algorithms. Besides, these examples seem to indicate that guaranteed upper bounds can be achieved even in non-convex domains.
We study extensions of piecewise polynomial data prescribed in a patch of tetrahedra sharing an edge. We show stability in the sense that the minimizers over piecewise polynomial spaces with prescribed tangential component jumps across faces and prescribed piecewise curl in elements are subordinate in the broken energy norm to the minimizers over the broken H(curl) space with the same prescriptions. Our proofs are constructive and yield constants independent of the polynomial degree. We then detail the application of this result to the a posteriori error analysis of the curl-curl problem discr…
We present a local construction of H(curl)-conforming piecewise polynomials satisfying a prescribed curl constraint. We start from a piecewise polynomial not contained in the H(curl) space but satisfying a suitable orthogonality property. The procedure employs minimizations in vertex patches and the outcome is, up to a generic constant independent of the underlying polynomial degree, as accurate as the best-approximations over the entire local versions of H(curl). This allows to design guaranteed, fully computable, constant-free, and polynomial-degree-robust a posteriori error estimates of Pra…
In this paper, we propose a new family of H(curl^2)-conforming elements for the quad-curl eigenvalue problem in 2D. The accuracy of this family is one order higher than that in [32]. We prove a priori and a posteriori error estimates. The a priori estimate of the eigenvalue with a convergence order 2(s-1) is obtained if the eigenvector u\in H^{s+1}(Ω). For the a posteriori estimate, by analyzing the associated source problem, we obtain lower and upper bounds for the eigenvector in an energy norm and an upper bound for the eigenvalues. Numerical examples are presented for validation.
We derive a posteriori error estimates for a semi-discrete finite element approximation of a nonlinear eddy current problem arising from applied superconductivity, known as the $p$-curl problem. In particular, we show the reliability for non-conforming Nédélec elements based on a residual type argument and a Helmholtz-Weyl decomposition of $W^p_0(\text{curl};Ω)$. As a consequence, we are also able to derive an a posteriori error estimate for a quantity of interest called the AC loss. The nonlinearity for this form of Maxwell's equation is an analogue of the one found in the $p$-Laplacian. It i…
In this paper, we design the first residual type a posteriori error estimator for mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the H(curl)-elliptic problems. Then we prove that our residual based a posteriori error indicator is both reliable and efficient. At last, we present some numerical experiments to validate the performance of the indicator within an adaptive mesh refinement procedure.

A stress equilibration procedure for linear elasticity is proposed and analyzed in this paper with emphasis on the behavior for (nearly) incompressible materials. Based on the displacement-pressure approximation computed with a stable finite element pair, it constructs an $H (\text{div})$-conforming, weakly symmetric stress reconstruction. Our focus is on the Taylor-Hood combination of continuous finite element spaces of polynomial degrees $k+1$ and $k$ for the displacement and the pressure, respectively. Our construction leads then to reconstructed stresses by Raviart-Thomas elements of degre…
In this paper, we study the convergence of adaptive mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for H(curl)-elliptic problems. We first get the mixed model of H(curl)-elliptic problem by introducing a new intermediate variable. Then we discuss the continuous variational problem and discrete variational problem, which based on interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin approximation. Next, we construct the corresponding posteriori error indicator, and prove the contraction of the summation of the energy error and the scaled error indicator. At last, we confirm and illustrate the theoretic…
Finite element approximation to a decoupled formulation for the quad--curl problem is studied in this paper. The difficulty of constructing elements with certain conformity to the quad--curl problems has been greatly reduced. For convex domains, where the regularity assumption holds for Stokes equation, the approximation to the curl of the true solution has quadratic order of convergence and first order for the energy norm. If the solution shows singularity, an a posterior error estimator is developed and a separate marking adaptive finite element procedure is proposed, together with its conve…
We prove that the minimizer in the Nédélec polynomial space of some degree p > 0 of a discrete minimization problem performs as well as the continuous minimizer in H(curl), up to a constant that is independent of the polynomial degree p. The minimization problems are posed for fields defined on a single non-degenerate tetrahedron in R^3 with polynomial constraints enforced on the curl of the field and its tangential trace on some faces of the tetrahedron. This result builds upon [L. Demkowicz, J. Gopalakrishnan, J. Schöberl SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 47 (2009), 3293--3324] and [M. Costabel, A. McInt…
We present an equilibration-based a posteriori error estimator for Nédélec element discretizations of the magnetostatic problem. The estimator is obtained by adding a gradient correction to the estimator for Nédélec elements of arbitrary degree presented in [J. Gedicke, S. Geevers, and I. Perugia. An equilibrated a posteriori error estimator for arbitrary-order Nédélec elements for magnetostatic problems. Journal of Scientific Computing, 83:1-23, 2020]. This new estimator is proven to be reliable, with reliability constant 1, and efficient, with an efficiency constant that is independent of th…
In the context of global/goal-oriented error estimation applied to computational mechanics, the need to obtain reliable and guaranteed bounds on the discretization error has motivated the use of residual error estimators. These estimators require the construction of admissible stress fields verifying the equilibrium exactly. This article focuses on a recent method, based on a flux-equilibration procedure and called the element equilibration + star-patch technique (EESPT), that provides for such stress fields. The standard version relies on a strong prolongation condition in order to calculate …

We present a novel \textit{a posteriori} error estimator for Nédélec elements for magnetostatic problems that is constant-free, i.e. it provides an upper bound on the error that does not involve a generic constant. The estimator is based on equilibration of the magnetic field and only involves small local problems that can be solved in parallel. Such an error estimator is already available for the lowest-degree Nédélec element [D. Braess, J. Schöberl, \textit{Equilibrated residual error estimator for edge elements}, Math. Comp. 77 (2008)] and requires solving local problems on vertex patches. …
We present a general framework to compute upper and lower bounds for linear-functional outputs of the exact solutions of the Poisson equation based on reconstructions of the field variable and flux for both the primal and adjoint problems. The method is devised from a generalization of the complementary energy principle and the duality theory. Using duality theory, the computation of bounds is reduced to finding independent potential and equilibrated flux reconstructions. A generalization of this result is also introduced, allowing to derive alternative guaranteed bounds from nearly-arbitrary …
In this work, an adaptive edge element method is developed for an H(curl)-elliptic constrained optimal control problem. We use the lowest-order Nedelec's edge elements of first family and the piecewise (element-wise) constant functions to approximate the state and the control, respectively, and propose a new adaptive algorithm with error estimators involving both residual-type error estimators and lower-order data oscillations. By using a local regular decomposition for H(curl)-functions and the standard bubble function techniques, we derive the a posteriori error estimates for the proposed er…

The well-known Prager-Synge identity is valid in $H^1(Ω)$ and serves as a foundation for developing equilibrated a posteriori error estimators for continuous elements. In this paper, we introduce a new inequality, that may be regarded as a generalization of the Prager-Synge identity, to be valid for piecewise $H^1(Ω)$ functions for diffusion problems. The inequality is proved to be identity in two dimensions. For nonconforming finite element approximation of arbitrary odd order, we propose a fully explicit approach that recovers an equilibrated flux in $H(div; Ω)$ through a local element-wise …
