Finite element approximation to a decoupled formulation for the quad--curl problem is studied in this paper. The difficulty of constructing elements with certain conformity to the quad--curl problems has been greatly reduced. For convex domains, where the regularity assumption holds for Stokes equation, the approximation to the curl of the true solution has quadratic order of convergence and first order for the energy norm. If the solution shows singularity, an a posterior error estimator is developed and a separate marking adaptive finite element procedure is proposed, together with its convergence proved. Both the a priori and a posteriori error analysis are supported by the numerical examples.
In this paper, we propose an $H(\text{curl}^2)$-conforming quadrilateral spectral element method to solve quad-curl problems. Starting with generalized Jacobi polynomials, we first introduce quasi-orthogonal polynomial systems for vector fields over rectangles. $H(\text{curl}^2)$-conforming elements over arbitrary convex quadrilaterals are then constructed explicitly in a hierarchical pattern using the contravariant transform together with the bilinear mapping from the reference square onto each quadrilateral. It is astonishing that both the simplest rectangular and quadrilateral spectral elem…
We propose and analyze a new family of nonconforming finite elements for the three-dimensional quad-curl problem. The proposed finite element spaces are subspaces of $\pmb{H}(\mathrm{curl})$, but not of $\pmb{H}(\mathrm{grad}~\mathrm{curl})$, which are different from the existing nonconforming ones. The well-posedness of the discrete problem is proved and optimal error estimates in discrete $\pmb{H}(\mathrm{grad}~\mathrm{curl})$ norm, $\pmb{H}(\mathrm{curl})$ norm and $\pmb{L}^2$ norm are derived. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the good performance of the method and confirm o…
Robust mixed finite element methods are developed for a quad-curl singular perturbation problem. Lower order H(grad curl)-nonconforming but H(curl)-conforming finite elements are constructed, which are extended to nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes and the associated commutative diagrams. Then H(grad curl)-nonconforming finite elements are employed to discretize the quad-curl singular perturbation problem, which possess the sharp and uniform error estimates with respect to the perturbation parameter. The Nitsche's technique is exploited to achieve the optimal convergence rate in the…
The quad-curl term is an essential part of the resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equation and the fourth order inverse electromagnetic scattering problem, which are both of great significance in science and engineering. It is desirable to develop efficient and practical numerical methods for the quad-curl problem. In this paper, we first present some new regularity results for the quad-curl problem on Lipschitz polyhedron domains and then propose a mixed finite element method for solving the quad-curl problem. With a {\em novel} discrete Sobolev imbedding inequality for the piecewise polynom…
In [24], we proposed H(curl^2)-conforming elements on both a triangle and a rectangle. This family of elements provides a brand new method to solve the quad-curl problem in 2 dimensions. In this paper, we turn our focus to 3 dimensions and construct an H(curl^2)-conforming tetrahedral finite element. The newly proposed element has been proved to have the optimal interpolation error estimate. Having tetrahedral elements, we can solve the quad-curl problem in any Lipschitz domain by conforming finite element method. We also provide several numerical examples of using our element to solve the qua…
In this paper, we develop two fully nonconforming (both H(grad curl)-nonconforming and H(curl)-nonconforming) finite elements on cubical meshes which can fit into the Stokes complex. The newly proposed elements have 24 and 36 degrees of freedom, respectively. Different from the fully H(grad curl)-nonconforming tetrahedral finite elements in [9], the elements in this paper lead to a robust finite element method to solve the singularly perturbed quad-curl problem. To confirm this, we prove the optimal convergence of order $O(h)$ for a fixed parameter $ε$ and the uniform convergence of order $O(h…
We derive an ultraweak variational formulation of the quad-curl problem in two and three dimensions. We present a discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) method for its approximation and prove its quasi-optimal convergence. We illustrate how this method can be applied to the Stokes problem in two dimensions, after an application of the curl operator to eliminate the pressure variable. In this way, DPG techniques known from Kirchhoff-Love plates can be used. We present an a priori error estimate that improves a previous approximation result for effective shear forces by using a less restrictive reg…
An hp-version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) method under nonconforming meshes is proposed to solve the quad-curl eigenvalue problem. We prove well-posedness of the numerical scheme for the quad-curl equation and then derive an error estimate in a mesh-dependent norm, which is optimal with respect to h but has different p-version error bounds under conforming and nonconforming tetrahedron meshes. The hp-version discrete compactness of the DG space is established for the convergence proof. The performance of the method is demonstrated by numerical experiments using conforming/no…
In this paper, we propose a new family of H(curl^2)-conforming elements for the quad-curl eigenvalue problem in 2D. The accuracy of this family is one order higher than that in [32]. We prove a priori and a posteriori error estimates. The a priori estimate of the eigenvalue with a convergence order 2(s-1) is obtained if the eigenvector u\in H^{s+1}(Ω). For the a posteriori estimate, by analyzing the associated source problem, we obtain lower and upper bounds for the eigenvector in an energy norm and an upper bound for the eigenvalues. Numerical examples are presented for validation.
This article introduces a weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for quad-curl problems in three dimensions. It is proved that the proposed WG method is stable and accurate in an optimal order of error estimates for the exact solution in discrete norms. In addition, an $L^2$ error estimate in an optimal order except the lowest orders $k=1, 2$ is derived for the WG solution. Some numerical experiments are conducted to verify the efficiency and accuracy of our WG method and furthermore a superconvergence has been observed from the numerical results.

We introduce and analyze a robust nonconforming finite element method for a three dimensional singularly perturbed quad-curl model problem. For the solution of the model problem, we derive proper a priori bounds, based on which, we prove that the proposed finite element method is robust with respect to the singular perturbation parameter $\varepsilon$ and the numerical solution is uniformly convergent with order $h^{1/2}$. In addition, we investigate the effect of treating the second boundary condition weakly by Nitsche's method. We show that such a treatment leads to sharper error estimates t…
We construct smooth finite element de Rham complexes in two space dimensions. This leads to three families of curl-curl conforming finite elements, two of which contain two existing families. The simplest triangular and rectangular finite elements have only 6 and 8 degrees of freedom, respectively. Numerical experiments for each family demonstrate the convergence and efficiency of the elements for solving the quad-curl problem.
Two nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes starting from the conforming Lagrange element and ending with the nonconforming $P_1$-$P_0$ element for the Stokes equation in three dimensions are constructed. And commutative diagrams are also shown by combining nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes and interpolation operators. The lower order $\boldsymbol H(\textrm{grad}\textrm{curl})$-nonconforming finite element only has $14$ degrees of freedom, whose basis functions are explicitly given in terms of the barycentric coordinates. The $\boldsymbol H(\textrm{grad}\textrm{curl})$-noncon…

We study the effects of numerical quadrature rules on error convergence rates when solving Maxwell-type variational problems via the curl-conforming or edge finite element method. A complete {\em a priori} error analysis for the case of bounded polygonal and curved domains with non-homogeneous coefficients is provided. We detail sufficient conditions with respect to mesh refinement and precision for the quadrature rules so as to guarantee convergence rates following that of exact numerical integration. On curved domains, we isolate the error contribution to numerical quadrature rules.
Given a sequence of finite element spaces which form a de Rham sequence, we will construct a dual representation of these spaces with associated differential operators which connect these spaces such that they also form a de Rham sequence. The matrix which converts primal representations to dual representations -- the Hodge matrix -- is the mass or Gram matrix. It will be shown that a bilinear form of a primal and a dual representation is equal to the vector inner product of the expansion coefficients (degrees of freedom) of both representations. This leads to very sparse system matrices, even…
The famous scientist Hermann von Helmholtz was born 200 years ago. Many complex physical wave phenomena in engineering can effectively be described using one or a set of equations named after him: the Helmholtz equation. Although this has been known for a long time from a theoretical point of view, the actual numerical implementation has often been hindered by divergence free and/or curl free constraints. There is further a need for a numerical method that is accurate, reliable and takes into account radiation conditions at infinity. The classical boundary element method (BEM) satisfies the la…
