SiPM-based readouts are becoming the standard for light detection in particle detectors given their superior resolution and ease of use with respect to vacuum tube photo-multipliers. However, the contributions of detection noise such as the dark rate, cross-talk, and after-pulsing may impact significantly their performance. In this work, we present the development of highly reflective single-phase argon chambers capable of light yields up to 32 photo-electrons per keV, with roughly 12 being primary photo-electrons generated by the argon scintillation, while the rest are accounted by optical cross-talk. Furthermore, the presence of compound processes results in a generalized Fano factor larger than 2 already at an over-voltage of 5 V. Finally, we present a parametrization of the optical cross-talk for the FBK NUV-HD-Cryo SiPMs at 87 K that can be extended to future detectors with tailored optical simulations.
The DarkSide-20k collaboration is preparing to equip 20 m^2 of SiPMs working in liquid argon at 86 K for the direct search of WIMPs. The collaboration had to solve many technological aspects, such as the development of SiPM optimized for operation in liquid argon, the readout of large SiPM-based detectors, the reliable packaging of more than 200000 SiPMs using radiopure materials. The packaging solutions available for cryogenic applications and the performances of the newest cryogenic extended gain SiPMs from FBK will be discussed.
Particle detectors based on liquid argon (LAr) have recently become recognized as an extremely attractive technology for the direct detection of dark matter as well as the measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS). The Chinese argon group at Institute of High Energy Physics has been studying the LAr detector technology and a LAr detector has been operating steadily. A program of using a dual phase LAr detector to measure the CE$ν$NS at Taishang Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed and the R\&D work is ongoing. Considering the requirements of ultra-low radio-purity …
Detection of light signals is crucial to a wide range of particle detectors. In particular, efficient detection of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light will provide new opportunities for some novel detectors currently being developed, but is technically challenging. In this article, we characterized the performance of Hamamatsu VUV4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for detecting VUV argon scintillation light without wavelength shifting. Using a customized cryogenic amplifier design, we operated two models of VUV4 SiPMs inside liquid argon and thoroughly examined their direct sensitivities to liquid …
Liquid argon is used as a target material in several current and planned experiments related to dark matter direct searching and neutrino detection. SiPM is becoming the standard for scintillator detectors because of its advantages over traditional PMT. In this paper, we developed a single-phase liquid argon detector using eight 1 $\times$1 inch$^2$ Hamamatsu S14161-6050HS 4$\times$4 SiPM arrays. The directly measured light yield is 25.7 $\pm$ 1.6 photo-electrons per keV, which corresponds to 12.8 $\pm$ 0.8 photo-electrons primarily generated by the argon scintillation. The rest is contributed…
Particle detectors based on liquid argon are now recognised as an attractive technology for dark matter direct detection and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering measurement. A program using a dual-phase liquid argon detector with a fiducial mass of 200~kg to detect coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at Taishan Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed. SiPMs will be used as the photon sensor because of their high radio-purity and high photon detection efficiency. S13370-6050CN SiPM, made by Hamamatsu, is a candidate for the detector. In this paper, the characterisation of S13370…
For the first time secondary scintillation, generated within the holes of a thick gas electron multiplier (TGEM) immersed in liquid argon, has been observed and measured using a silicon photomultiplier device (SiPM). 250 electron-ion pairs, generated in liquid argon via the interaction of a 5.9KeV Fe-55 gamma source, were drifted under the influence of a 2.5KV/cm field towards a 1.5mm thickness TGEM, the local field sufficiently high to generate secondary scintillation light within the liquid as the charge traversed the central region of the TGEM hole. The resulting VUV light was incident on a…

A particle detection system that exploits the scintillation light produced by ionizing particles in liquid argon (LAr) has been assembled at CERN. The system is based on 10 large-area photomultiplier tubes (PMT) immersed in a 1500-liter dewar filled with liquid argon and equipped with an extendible feed-through and mechanical support for an alpha source (241Am). The position of the source can be changed with respect to the PMT plane in vertical and horizontal directions. Arrays of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) photodetectors, integrated in the source support, are used for the data acquisition…
Next generation multi-ton scale noble liquid experiments have the unique opportunity to discover dark matter particles at the TeV scale, reaching the sensitivity of 10^-48 cm2 in the WIMP nucleon scattering cross-section. A prerequisite will be the reduction of radiogenic background sources to negligible levels. This is only possible if ultra pure high efficiency photosensors are available for the scintillation light readout. Current experiments (e.g. Xenon, LUX, Darkside, ArDM) use cryogenic PMTs as photosensors. An attractive alternative is represented by silicon photomultiplier arrays (SiPM…
We further study the effect of neutral bremsstrahlung (NBrS) in two-phase argon electroluminescence (EL), revealed recently in [1]. The absolute EL yield due to NBrS effect, in the visible and NIR range, was remeasured in pure gaseous argon in the two-phase mode, using a two-phase detector with EL gap read out directly by cryogenic PMTs and SiPMs. Possible applications of the NBrS effect in detection science are discussed, including those in two-phase dark matter detectors.
The ARAPUCA is a novel concept for liquid argon scintillation light detection which has been proposed for the photon detection system of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. The test in liquid argon of one of the first ARAPUCA prototypes is presented in this work, where the working principle is experimentally demonstrated. The prototype has an acceptance window of 9 cm$^2$ and is read-out by a single SiPM with active area of 0.36 cm$^2$. Its global detection efficiency was estimated by exposing it to a $^{238}U$ $α$ source and to cosmic rays and was found to be 1.15\% $\pm$ 0.15\%, in goo…
In this paper we describe the performance of a light detector for Ar scintillation light made of wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibers connected to Silicon-Photomultipliers (SiPM). The setup was conceived to be used as anti-Compton veto for high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors operated directly in liquid Argon (LAr). Background suppression efficiencies for different radioactive sources were measured in a test cryostat with about 800 kg LAr. This work was part of the R\&D effort for the GERDA experiment.
Future large liquid argon direct dark matter detectors can benefit greatly from an efficient surface background rejection technique. To aid the development of these large scale detectors a test stand, Argon-1, has been constructed at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, in the noble liquid detector development lab. It aims to test a novel surface background rejection technique using a thin layer of slow scintillating material at the surface of the vessel. Through pulse-shape discrimination of the slow light from the scintillating layer, events from the surface of the detector can be discrimina…
A large number of particle detectors employ liquid argon as their target material owing to its high scintillation yield and its ability to drift ionization charge over large distances. Scintillation light from argon is peaked at 128 nm and a wavelength shifter is required for its efficient detection. In this work, we directly compare the light yield achieved in two identical liquid argon chambers, one of which is equipped with PolyEthylene Naphthalate (PEN) and the other with TetraPhenyl Butadiene (TPB) wavelength shifter. Both chambers are lined with enhanced specular reflectors and instrumen…
Xenon-doped liquid argon has been proposed as a good alternative to pure liquid argon in scintillation detectors. In this study, we report on the measurement of the time profile of scintillation light emitted from xenon-doped liquid argon with molar concentrations up to 1600 ppm. A compact setup has been developed for this study, with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) as the photosensor and $^{210}\mathrm{Po}$ and $^{90}\mathrm{Sr}$ as scintillation sources. An effective model based on the de-excitation processes has been developed to describe the data. The results show that xenon-doped liquid ar…
We demonstrate, for the time, the operation of a bubble-assisted Liquid Hole Multiplier (LHM) in liquid argon. The LHM, sensitive to both radiation-induced ionization electrons and primary scintillation photons, consists of a perforated electrode immersed in the noble liquid, with a stable gas-bubble trapped underneath. Electrons deposited in the liquid or scintillation-induced photoelectrons emitted from a photocathode on the electrode's surface, are collected into the holes; after crossing the liquid-gas interface, they induce electroluminescence within the bubble. After having validated in …
Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter search to record ionization signals in the gas phase induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase (S2 signals). In this work, the EL pulse-shapes in a two-phase argon detector have for the first time been studied systematically in a wide range of reduced electric field, varying from 3 to 9 Td. The pulse-shapes were studied at different readout configurations and spectral ranges: using cryogenic PMTs and SiPMs, with and without a wavelength shifter (WLS), in the VUV and visible range. We ob…
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are photosensors widely used for imaging in a variety of high energy and nuclear physics experiments. In noble-gas detectors for double-beta decay and dark matter experiments, SiPMs are attractive photosensors for imaging. However they are insensitive to the VUV scintillation emitted by the noble gases (xenon and argon). This difficulty is overcome in the NEXT experiment by coating the SiPMs with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) to convert the VUV light into visible light. TPB requires stringent storage and operational conditions to prevent its degradation by enviro…
The light yield of a small undoped cesium iodide (CsI) crystal directly coupled with two silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) at about 77~Kelvin was measured to be $43.0 \pm 1.1$~photoelectrons (PE) per keV electron-equivalent (keV$_\text{ee}$) using $X$ and $γ$-ray peaks from an $^{241}$Am radioactive source from 18 to 60 keV. The high light yield together with some other technical advantages illustrate the great potential of this novel combination for neutrino and low-mass dark matter detection, particularly at accelerator-based neutrino sources, where random background can be highly suppressed …
Detectors for direct dark matter search using noble gases in liquid phase as detection medium need to be coupled to liquefaction, purification and recirculation systems. A dedicated cryogenic system has been assembled and operated at the INFN-Naples cryogenic laboratory with the aim to liquefy and purify the argon used as active target in liquid argon detectors to study the scintillation and ionization signals detected by large SiPMs arrays. The cryogenic system is mainly composed of a double wall cryostat hosting the detector, a purification stage to reduce the impurities below one part per b…
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) together with the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) hosted at the Fermilab will provide a unique, world-leading program for the exploration of key questions at the forefront of neutrino physics and astrophysics. CP violation in neutrino flavor mixing is one of its most important potential discoveries. Additionally, the experiment will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and precisely measure the neutrino mixing parameters which may potentially reveal new fundamental symmetries of nature. Moreover, the DUNE is also designed for the observat…
Ahigh-granularity scintillator calorimeter readout with silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is an electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) candidate for experiments at the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). A critical design parameter of this ECAL candidate is the dynamic range of the SiPMs. This study investigates the SiPM dynamic range required for the CEPC scintillator ECAL. A model is developed on the basis of the operation principles of SiPMs to describe the response of an SiPM to light pulses within one recovery period by considering the cross-talk effect, photon detection efficiency, an…

Developed at CERN as Recognized Experiment RE18, the experiment has been approved in 2010 to be installed in the Spanish underground site LSC (Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc). Under the label of LSC EXP-08-2010 the ArDM detector underwent an intensive period of technical completion and safety approval until the recent filling of the target vessel with almost 2 ton of liquid argon. This report describes the experimental achievements during commissioning of ArDM and the transition into…
The photon detection system of the first far detector (FD1-HD) of the DUNE experiment will detect scintillation photons produced by particle interactions in a kiloton-scale liquid Argon time projection chamber. The photon detectors of choice are silicon photomultipliers (SiPM), 6$\times$6 mm$^2$ each, arranged in groups of 48, which present a significantly low impedance to the front-end electronics. This paper details the design of a cryogenic amplifier with exceptionally low white voltage noise of 0.37 nV$\sqrt{Hz}$, based on a silicon-germanium input transistor and a BiCMOS fully differentia…
In this article we describe the photon detection readout electronics for the nEDM@SNS experiment. The chosen "photon counting" architecture, which utilizes high-efficiency silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) and is appropriate for low-light applications, allows the use of a relatively high SiPM operating voltage. This maximizes photon detection efficiency and minimizes gain/efficiency voltage-dependence while eliminating optical cross-talk.
Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases has long been used in two-phase detectors for dark matter search, to record ionization signals induced by particle scattering in the noble-gas liquid (S2 signals). Until recently, it was believed that proportional electroluminescence was fully due to VUV emission of noble gas excimers produced in atomic collisions with excited atoms, the latter being in turn produced by drifting electrons. In this work we consider an additional mechanism of proportional electroluminescence, namely that of bremsstrahlung of drifting electrons scattered on neu…
Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detectors are ideally suited for studying neutrino interactions and probing the parameters that characterize neutrino oscillations. The ability to drift ionization particles over long distances in purified argon and to trigger on abundant scintillation light allows for excellent particle identification and triggering capability. Recent U.S. based work in the development of LAr TPC technology for massive kiloton size detectors will be discussed in this talk, including details of the ArgoNeuT (Argon Neutrino Test) test-beam project, which is a 175 l…
The ARAPUCA concept has been proposed as a simple and neat solution for increasing the effective collection area of SiPMs through the shifting and trapping of scintillation light in noble liquids, thus with great potential for improving timing and calorimetry resolution in neutrino and dark matter search experiments using time projection chambers. It is expected to achieve a single photon detection efficiency larger than 1\%. The initial design consists of a box made of highly reflective internal surface material and with an acceptance window for photons composed of two shifters and a dichroic…
The photon detection system of the DUNE experiment is based on the X-ARAPUCA light trap. The basic elements of the X-ARAPUCA are the dichroic filters coated with wavelength shifter (para-Therphenyl), a waveshifting plate and an array of SiPMs which detects the trapped photons. A small scale prototype of the X-ARAPUCA has been installed in liquid argon in a dedicated facility at INFN-Napoli and exposed to alpha particles from a source. In order to test the stability of the overall device response the X-ARAPUCA was kept for 10 days in liquid argon continuously purified. The performed tests allow…
To increase the light yield of a liquid Ar (LAr) detector, we optimized the evaporation technique of tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) on the detector surface and tested the operability of a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), namely, the multi-pixel photon counter with through-silicon-via (TSV-MPPC, Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.) at LAr temperature. TPB converts the LAr scintillations (vacuum ultraviolet light) to visible light, which can be detected by high-sensitivity photosensors. Because the light yield depends on the deposition mass of TPB on the inner surface of the detector, we constructed a well-con…

Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber detectors are well suited to study neutrino interactions, and are an intriguing option for future massive detectors capable of measuring the parameters that characterize neutrino oscillations. These detectors combine fine-grained tracking with calorimetry, allowing for excellent imaging and particle identification ability. In this talk the details of the MicroBooNE experiment, a 175 ton LArTPC which will be exposed to Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beamline starting in 2011, will be presented. The ability of MicroBooNE to differentiate electrons from photons g…
Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The "standard" EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms ("neutral bremsstrahlung", NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche sci…

The MicroBooNE experiment at Fermilab uses liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) technology to study neutrino interactions in argon. A fundamental requirement for LArTPCs is to achieve and maintain a low level of electronegative contaminants in the liquid to minimize the capture of drifting ionization electrons. The attenuation time for the drifting electrons should be long compared to the maximum drift time, so that the signals from particle tracks that generate ionization electrons with long drift paths can be detected efficiently. In this talk we present MicroBooNE measurement of el…
The MicroBooNE experiment is a 170 ton Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) that will begin running at Fermilab in 2013. Its primary physics goal is to explore the low energy excess of events seen by the MiniBooNE experiment and it is the next step in the R&D to make LAr a viable option for future large neutrino detectors. This talk presented an overview of the MicroBooNE experiment with an emphasis on the light collection system and recent technical advances.

The capture of scintillation light emitted by liquid Argon and Xenon under molecular excitations by charged particles is still a challenging task. Here we present a first attempt to design a device able to grab sufficiently high luminosity in order to reconstruct the path of ionizing particles. This preliminary study is based on the use of masks to encode the light signal combined with single-photon detectors. In this respect, the proposed system is able to detect tracks over focal distances of about tens of centimeters. From numerical simulations it emerges that it is possible to successfully…
