Janus transition metal dichalcogenides, with intrinsic mirror asymmetry, exhibit a wide array of interesting properties. In this work, we study Janus monolayers derived from WTe$_2$ using first-principles and tight-binding calculations. We discover that WSeTe and WSTe are topologically trivial, in contrast to the parent quantum spin Hall insulator WTe$_2$. Motivated by the growing interest in non-linear Hall effect, which also requires asymmetric structures, we investigate the Berry curvature and its dipole in these Janus systems and find that they exhibit strikingly large values of Berry curvature dipole, despite being in the topologically trivial phase. We track down the origin of this behaviour and put forth a low-energy massive Dirac model to understand the central features of our ab initio computations. Our predictions introduce Janus monolayers as promising new platforms for exploring as well as engineering non-linear Hall effect.
We theoretically predict that vanadium-based Janus dichalcogenide monolayers constitute an ideal platform for spin-orbit-torque memories. Using first principles calculations, we demonstrate that magnetic exchange and magnetic anisotropy energies are higher for heavier chalcogen atoms, while the broken inversion symmetry in the Janus form leads to the emergence of Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling. The spin-orbit torque efficiency is evaluated using optimized quantum transport methodology and found to be comparable to heavy nonmagnetic metals. The coexistence of magnetism and spin-orbit coupling …
Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) lose the horizontal mirror symmetry of ordinary TMDs, leading to the emergence of additional features, such as native piezoelectricity, Rashba effect, and enhanced catalytic activity. While Raman spectroscopy is an essential nondestructive, phase- and composition-sensitive tool to monitor the synthesis of materials, a comprehensive study of the Raman spectrum of Janus monolayers is still missing. Here, we discuss the Raman spectra of WSSe and MoSSe measured at room and cryogenic temperatures, near and off resonance. By combining polarization-resolv…
In this work, we propose novel two-dimensional (2D) Janus Ni dichalcogenide materials and explore their feasibility, stability and evaluate their electronic and optical properties with ab-initio calculations. Three unique Janus materials, namely NiSSe, NiSTe and NiSeTe, based on the 2H hexagonal polytype of NiS2, NiSe2 and NiTe2 were proposed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, show that among the three proposed NiXY Janus 2D materials, NiSSe had the best energetic and dynamical stability. GGA PBE calculations showed NiSSe to have a semi-metallic bandstructure with the Ni-Se interac…

Strong structural asymmetry is actively explored in two-dimensional (2D) materials, because it can give rise to many interesting physical properties. Motivated by the recent synthesis of monolayer $\mathrm{Si_2Te_2}$, we explore a family of 2D materials, termed as the Janus Si dichalcogenides (JSD), which parallel the Janus transition metal dichalcogenides and exhibit even stronger inversion asymmetry. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate excellent stability of these materials. We show that their strong structural asymmetry leads to pronounced intrinsic polar field, sizable spin…
Converting solar energy into chemical energy by splitting water is a promising means to generate a sustainable and renewable solution without detrimental environmental impact. The two-dimensional semiconductors serve as potential catalysts in this regard, and here we combine Janus transition-metal dichalcogenides (MoXY, X/Y = S, Se, Te) and graphitic carbon nitride in a van der Waals heterostructure. Within the first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic, optical and excitonic properties that determine the photocatalytic activity. Due to the internal electric field, the photog…
Janus dichalcogenide multilayers provide a paradigmatic platform to engineer electronic phenomena dominated by spin-orbit coupling. Their unique spin-orbit effects stem from local mirror symmetry breaking in each layer, which induces a colossal Rashba spin-orbit effect in comparison with the conventional dichalcogenide counterparts. Here we put forward twisted dichalcogenide bilayers as a simple platform to realize spin-orbit correlated states. We demonstrate the emergence of flat bands featuring strong spin-momentum locking and the emergence of non-collinear symmetry broken states when intera…
We reveal giant proximity-induced magnetism and valley-polarization effects in Janus Pt dichalcogenides (such as SPtSe), when bound to the Europium oxide (EuO) substrate. Using first-principles simulations, it is surprisingly found that the charge redistribution, resulting from proximity with EuO, leads to the formation of two K and K$^{'}$valleys in the conduction bands. Each of these valleys displays its own spin polarization and a specific spin-texture dictated by broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries, and valley-exchange and Rashba splittings as large as hundreds of meV. This provi…
We study the quantum nonlinear Hall effect in two-dimensional materials with time-reversal symmetry. When only one mirror line exists, a transverse charge current occurs in second-order response to an external electric field, as a result of the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. Candidate 2D materials to observe this effect are two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides~(TMDCs). First we use an ab initio based tight-binding approach to demonstrate that monolayer $T_d$-stricture TMDCs exhibit a finite Berry curvature dipole. In the $1H$ and $1T'$ phase of TMDCs, we show the emergen…
Electron-phonon scatterings in solid-state systems are pivotal processes in determining many key physical quantities such as charge carrier mobilities and thermal conductivities. Here, we report on the direct probing of phonon mode specific electron-phonon scatterings in layered semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides WSe2, MoSe2, WS2, and MoS2 through inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measurements, quantum transport simulations, and density functional calculation. We experimentally and theoretically characterize momentum-conserving single- and two-phonon electron-phonon scatte…
We theoretically study the role of the Berry curvature on neutral and charged excitons in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides. The Berry curvature arises due to a strong coupling between the conduction and valence bands in these materials that can to great extent be described within the model of massive Dirac fermions. The Berry curvature lifts the degeneracy of exciton states with opposite angular momentum. Using an electronic interaction that accounts for non-local screening effects, we find a Berry-curvature induced splitting of $\sim 17$ meV between the 2$p_{-}$ and 2$p_{+}$ e…
Recently, signatures of nonlinear Hall effects induced by Berry-curvature dipoles have been found in atomically thin 1T'/Td-WTe$_2$. In this work, we show that in strained polar transition-metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) with 2H-structures, Berry-curvature dipoles created by spin degrees of freedom lead to strong nonlinear Hall effects. Under an easily accessible uniaxial strain of order 0.2%, strong nonlinear Hall signals, characterized by a Berry-curvature dipole on the order of 1Å, arise in electron-doped polar TMDs such as MoSSe, and this is easily detectable experimentally. Moreover, the magn…
We analyze the properties of strongly coupled excitons and photons in systems made of semiconducting two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides embedded in optical cavities. Through a detailed microscopic analysis of the coupling we unveil novel, highly tunable features of the spectrum, that result in polariton splitting and a breaking of light-matter selection rules. The dynamics of the composite polaritons is influenced by the Berry phase arising both from their constituents and from the confinement-enhanced coupling. We find that light-matter coupling emerges as a mechanism that enhan…
Recently, the topological flat bands and spin Hall effect have been experimentally observed in the AB-stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures. In this work, we systematically study the Berry curvature effects in moiré transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers. We point out that the moiré potential of the remote conduction bands would induce a sizable periodic pseudo-magnetic field (PMF) on the valence band. This periodic PMF creates net Berry curvature flux in each valley of the moiré Brillouin zone. The combination of the effect of the Berry curvature and the spin-valley locking …
Janus transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers are fully artificial materials, where one plane of chalcogen atoms is replaced by chalcogen atoms of a different type. Theory predicts an in-built out-of-plane electric field, giving rise to long-lived, dipolar excitons, while preserving direct-bandgap optical transitions in a uniform potential landscape. Previous Janus studies had broad photoluminescence (>15 meV) spectra obfuscating their excitonic origin. Here, we identify the neutral, and negatively charged inter- and intravalley exciton transitions in Janus WSeS monolayer with $\sim 6$ meV …
In transition-metal dichalcogenides, electrons in the K-valleys can experience both Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. In this work, we show that the coexistence of Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings leads to a special type of valley Hall effect, which we call spin-orbit coupling induced valley Hall effect. Importantly, near the conduction band edge, the valley-dependent Berry curvatures generated by spin-orbit couplings are highly tunable by external gates and dominate over the intrinsic Berry curvatures originating from orbital degrees of freedom under accessible experimental conditio…
The Janus structure, by combining properties of different transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers in a single polar material, has attracted increasing research interest because of their particular structure and potential application in electronics, optoelectronics and piezoelectronics. In this work, Janus SnSSe monolayer is predicted by means of first-principles calculations, which exhibits dynamic and mechanical stability. By using generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the Janus SnSSe monolayer is found to be an indirect band-gap semiconductor, whos…
The geometry of electronic bands in a solid can drastically alter single-particle charge and spin transport. We show here that collective optical excitations arising from Coulomb interactions also exhibit unique signatures of Berry curvature and quantum geometric tensor. A non-zero Berry curvature mixes and lifts the degeneracy of $l \neq 0$ states, leading to a time-reversal-symmetric analog of the orbital Zeeman effect. The quantum geometric tensor, on the other hand, leads to $l$-dependent shifts of exciton states that is analogous to the Lamb shift. Our results provide an explanation of th…
Achieving combination of spin and valley polarized states with topological insulating phase is pregnant to promote the fantastic integration of topological physics, spintronics and valleytronics. In this work, a spin-valley-coupled quantum spin Hall insulator (svc-QSHI) is predicted in Janus monolayer $\mathrm{CSb_{1.5}Bi_{1.5}}$ with dynamic, mechanical and thermal stabilities. The inequivalent valleys have opposite Berry curvature and spin moment, which can produce a spin-valley Hall effect. In the center of Brillouin zone, a Rashba-type spin splitting can be observed due to missing horizont…
Due to their great potential in electronics, optoelectronics and piezoelectronics, Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers have attracted increasing research interest, the MoSSe of which with sandwiched S-Mo-Se structure has been synthesized experimentally. In this work, the biaxial strain dependence of electronic structures and transport properties of Janus PtSSe monolayer is systematically investigated by using generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Calculated results show that SOC has a detrimental effect on power factor of PtSSe monolayer, w…
When transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers lack inversion symmetry, their low-energy single particle spectrum can described by tilted massive Dirac Hamiltonians. The so-called Janus materials fall into that category. Inversion symmetry can also be broken by the application of out-of-plane electric fields, or by the mere presence of a substrate. Here we explore the properties of excitons in TMDC monolayers lacking inversion symmetry. We find that exciton binding energies can be larger than the electronic band gap, making such materials promising candidates to host the elusive exciton insul…
Motivated by recent progress in 2D spintronics, we present Eu deposited on a 1H-WSe$_2$ as a promising platform for engineering spin-orbit effects and Berry curvature. By first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we show that Eu/WSe$_2$ exhibits intriguing properties such as high magnetic anisotropy, valley-dependent polarization of spin and orbital angular momenta, and their Rashba textures. These originate from magnetic and spin-orbit proximity effects at the interface and the interplay between localized $4f$ magnetic moments of Eu and mobile charge carriers of WSe$_2…
The interplay between topology and valley degree of freedom has attracted much interest because it can realize new phenomena and applications. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we demonstrate intrinsically valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall effect in monolayer ferrovalley material: Janus VSiGeN4, of which the edge states are chiral-spin-valley locking. Besides, a small tensile or compressive strain can drive phase transition in the material from valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall state to half-valley-metal state. With the increase of the strain, the material turns into fe…
Odd-angular momentum exciton states are dark to light in monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides and can be addressed only by two-photon probes. Besides, $2p$ excitons states are expected to show a fine splitting that arises from the peculiar electronic band structure of the material, characterized by a finite Berry curvature around each valley. In this work we study in detail the coupling of photons to $p$ exciton states and we find that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction or a Skyrmion in the transition-metal dichalcogenide substrate can be exploited to engineer finite optical selection…
We study the thermoelectric properties of monolayers of MoS$_{2}$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides under circularly polarized off-resonant light. Analytical expressions are derived for the Berry phase mediated magnetic moment, orbital magnetization, as well as thermal and Nernst conductivities. Tuning of the band gap by {\it off-resonant} light enhances the spin splitting in both the valence and conduction bands and, thus, leads to a dramatic improvement of the spin and valley thermoelectric properties.
We theoretically study the formation of single-particle bound states confined by strain at the center of bubbles in monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Bubbles ubiquitously form in two-dimensional crystals on top of a substrate by the competition between van der Waals forces and the hydrostatic pressure exerted by trapped fluid. This leads to strong strain at the center of the bubble that reduces the bangap locally, creating potential wells for the electrons that confine states inside. We simulate the spectrum versus the bubble radius for the four semiconducting group VI TMD…
The physics related to Berry curvature is now a central research topic in condensed matter physics. The Berry curvature dipole (BCD) is a significant and intriguing condensed matter phenomenon that involves inversion symmetry breaking. However, the creation and controllability of BCDs have so far been limited to far below room temperature (RT) and non-volatile (i.e., ferroic) BCDs have not yet been discovered, hindering further progress in topological physics. In this work, we demonstrate a switchable and non-volatile BCD effect at RT in a topological crystalline insulator, Pb1-xSnxTe (PST), w…
The band structure of many semiconducting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possesses two degenerate valleys, with equal and opposite Berry curvature. It has been predicted that, when illuminated with circularly polarized light, interband transitions generate an unbalanced non-equilibrium population of electrons and holes in these valleys, resulting in a finite Hall voltage at zero magnetic field when a current flows through the system. This is the so-called valley Hall effect that has recently been observed experimentally. Here, we show that this effect is mediated by photo-ge…
The electronic correlation may have essential influence on electronic structures in some materials with special structure and localized orbital distribution. In this work, taking Janus monolayer FeClF as a concrete example, the correlation effects on its electronic structures are investigated by using generalized gradient approximation plus $U$ (GGA+$U$) approach. For perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), the increasing electron correlation effect can induce the ferrovalley (FV) to half-valley-metal (HVM) to quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) to HVM to FV transitions. For QAH state, there are a u…
We study valley-dependent spin transport theoretically in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides in which a variety of spin and valley physics are expected because of spin-valley coupling. The results show that the spins are valley-selectively excited with appropriate carrier doping and valley polarized spin current (VPSC) is generated. The VPSC leads to the spin-current Hall effect, transverse spin accumulation originating from the Berry curvature in momentum space. The results indicate that spin excitations with spin-valley coupling lead to both valley and spin transport, which is promis…
Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) can probe localized excitations at selected atoms in materials, including particle-hole transitions between the valence and conduction bands. These transitions are governed by fundamental properties of the corresponding Bloch wave-functions, including orbital and magnetic degrees of freedom, and quantum geometric properties such as the Berry curvature. In particular, orbital angular momentum (OAM), which is closely linked to the Berry curvature, can exhibit a nontrivial momentum dependence. We demonstrate how information on such OAM textures can be ex…
The electronic topology is generally related to the Berry curvature, which can induce the anomalous Hall effect in time-reversal symmetry breaking systems. Intrinsic monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides possesses two nonequivalent K and K' valleys, having Berry curvatures with opposite signs, and thus vanishing anomalous Hall effect in this system. Here we report the experimental realization of asymmetrical distribution of Berry curvature in a single valley in monolayer WSe2 through applying uniaxial strain to break C3v symmetry. As a result, although the Berry curvature itself is still …
The Berry curvature dipole is a physical quantity that is expected to allow various quantum geometrical phenomena in a range of solid-state systems. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides provide an exceptional platform to modulate and investigate the Berry curvature dipole through strain. Here we theoretically demonstrate and experimentally verify for monolayer MoS$_\rm{2}$ the generation of valley orbital magnetization as a response to an in-plane electric field due to the Berry curvature dipole. The measured valley orbital magnetization shows excellent agreement with the calculated Berr…
Using the quasiclassical concept of Berry curvature we demonstrate that a Dirac exciton - a pair of Dirac quasiparticles bound by Coulomb interactions - inevitably possesses an intrinsic angular momentum making the exciton effectively self-rotating. The model is applied to excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, in which the charge carriers are known to be described by a Dirac-like Hamiltonian. We show that the topological self-rotation strongly modifies the exciton spectrum and, as a consequence, resolves the puzzle of the overestimated two-dimensional polarizability emp…
We analyze the electron dynamics in corrugated layers of transition-metal dichalcogenides. Due to the strong spin-orbit coupling, the intrinsic (Gaussian) curvature leads to an emergent gauge field associated with the Berry connection of the spinor wave function. We discuss the gauge field created by topological defects of the lattice, namely, tetragonal/octogonal disclinations and edge dislocations. Ripples and topological disorder induce the same dephasing effects as a random magnetic field, suppressing the weak localization effects. This geometric magnetic field can be detected in a Aharono…
It has been recently established that optoelectronic and non-linear transport experiments can give direct access to the dipole moment of the Berry curvature in non-magnetic and non-centrosymmetric materials. Thus far, non-vanishing Berry curvature dipoles have been shown to exist in materials with substantial spin-orbit coupling where low-energy Dirac quasiparticles form tilted cones. Here, we prove that this topological effect does emerge in two-dimensional Dirac materials even in the complete absence of spin-orbit coupling. In these systems, it is the warping of the Fermi surface that trigge…
In this work, we predict the emergence of the valley Edelstein Effect (VEE), which is an electric-field-induced spin polarization effect, in gated monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (MTMDs). We found an unconventional valley-dependent response in which the spin-polarization is parallel to the applied electric field with opposite spin-polarization generated by opposite valleys. This is in sharp contrast to the conventional Edelstein effect in which the induced spin-polarization is perpendicular to the applied electric field. We identify the origin of VEE as combined effects of conventio…
The lack of inversion symmetry in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMDMs) enables a considerable molecular-level intrinsic piezoelectricity, which opens prospects for atomically-thin piezotronics and optoelectronics. Here, based on the tight-binding (TB) approach and Berry phase polarization theory, we establish an atomic-scale TB theory for demonstrating piezoelectric physics in TMDMs. Using the TB piezoelectric theory, we predict their electronic Grüneisen parameters (EGP) which measure the electron-phonon couplings. By virtue of the constructed analytical piezoelec…
The effect of strain in zigzag ribbons of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides with induced superconductivity is studied using a minimal 3-band tight-binding model. The unstrained system shows a topological phase with Majorana zero modes localized at the boundaries of the one-dimensional (1D) zigzag edges. By direct inspection of the spectrum and wave functions we examine the evolution of the topological phase as an in-plane, uniaxial deformation is imposed. It is found that strain shifts the energy of 1D edge states, thus causing a topological phase transition which eliminates the Major…
We study the anomalous Hall effect in monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides 2H-$MX_2$ ($M$=Mo, W, and $X$=S, Se, Te) under a proximity effect of ferromagnetic substrate. If a proximity-induced exchange field is introduced, the spin-polarized energy bands in $K$ and $K'$ valleys are shifted in the opposite directions, and it causes the Hall effect by breaking time-reversal symmetry. The induced Hall effect is the most prominent in the valence band which has a large intrinsic spin splitting. Moreover, we find that tilting the magnetization from the perpendicular direction gives rise to …
We theoretically analyze the non-linear anomalous Nernst effect as the second-order response of temperature gradient by using the semiclassical framework of electron dynamics. We find that a non-linear current can be generated transverse to the applied temperature gradient in time-reversal-symmetry materials with broken inversion symmetry. This effect has a quantum origin arising from the Berry curvature of states near the Fermi surface. We discuss the non-linear Nernst effect in transition metal dichalcogenides~(TMDCs) under the application of uniaxial strain. In particular, we predict that u…
We theoretically introduce the fundamentally fastest induction of a significant population and valley polarization in a monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide (i.e., $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ and $\mathrm{WS_2}$). This may be extended to other two-dimensional materials with the same symmetry. This valley polarization can be written and read-out by a pulse consisting of just a single optical oscillation with a duration of a few femtoseconds and an amplitude of $\sim0.2~\mathrm V/\mathrmÅ$. Under these conditions, we predict a new effect of {\em topological resonance}, which is due to Bloch motio…
The long wavelength moiré superlattices in twisted 2D structures have emerged as a highly tunable platform for strongly correlated electron physics. We study the moiré bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers, focusing on WSe$_2$, at small twist angles using a combination of first principles density functional theory, continuum modeling, and Hartree-Fock approximation. We reveal the rich physics at small twist angles $θ<4^\circ$, and identify a particular magic angle at which the top valence moiré band achieves almost perfect flatness. In the vicinity of this magic angle, …
