Two dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit an intrinsic Ising spin orbit coupling (SOC) along with a valley contrasting Berry curvature, which can generate a purely anomalous spin and valley Nernst signal driven by a thermal gradient. We show that a small Bychkov-Rashba coupling, which is present in gated TMDs, can enhance the valley Nernst signal by at least 1-2 orders of magnitude. We find that the Nernst signal in these materials is dominated by the anomalous geometrical contribution, and the conventional contribution is much weaker. Importantly, the Nernst signal is also highly tunable by external gating. Although the total Nernst signal vanishes due to time reversal (TR) symmetry, a small magnetic coupling lifts the valley degeneracy and generates an amplified Nernst response. Additionally, we also discuss the Nernst response of bilayer TMDs, and show a similar enhancement and modulation of the Nernst signal due to Rashba SOC. Our predictions are highly pertinent to ongoing experimental studies in TMDs. The generated large anomalous Nernst signal can directly probe the presence of a large Berry curvature in these materials, and may serve as a promising tunable platform for caloritronics applications.
Spin and valley dependent anomalous Nernst effect are analyzed for monolayer MoS2 and other group-VI dichalcogenides. We find that pure spin and valley currents can be generated perpendicular to the applied thermal gradient in the plane of these two-dimensional materials. This effect provides a versatile platform for applications of spin caloritronics. A spin current purity factor is introduced to quantify this effect. When time reversal symmetry is violated, e.g. two-dimensional materials on an insulating magnetic substrate, a dip-peak feature appears for the total Nernst coefficient. For the…
In this Letter, we study the spin Nernst effect (SNE) of magnons in the nonlinear response regime. We derive the formula for the nonlinear magnon spin Nernst current by solving the Boltzmann equation and find out that it is described by an extended Berry curvature dipole of magnons. The nonlinear magnon SNE is expected to occur in various Néel antiferromagnets without Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In particular, the nonlinear spin Nernst current in the honeycomb and diamond lattice antiferromagnets can be controlled by strain/pressure.
We theoretically analyze the non-linear anomalous Nernst effect as the second-order response of temperature gradient by using the semiclassical framework of electron dynamics. We find that a non-linear current can be generated transverse to the applied temperature gradient in time-reversal-symmetry materials with broken inversion symmetry. This effect has a quantum origin arising from the Berry curvature of states near the Fermi surface. We discuss the non-linear Nernst effect in transition metal dichalcogenides~(TMDCs) under the application of uniaxial strain. In particular, we predict that u…
We theoretically investigate topological spin transport of the magnon-polarons in bilayer magnet with two-dimensional square lattices. Our theory is motivated by recent reports on the van der Waals magnets which show the reversible electrical switching of the interlayer magnetic order between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic orders. The magnetoelastic interaction opens band gaps and allows the interband transition between different excitation states. In the layered antiferromagnet, due to the interband transition between the magnon-polaron states, the spin Berry curvature which allows the t…
We study the thermoelectric properties of monolayers of MoS$_{2}$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides under circularly polarized off-resonant light. Analytical expressions are derived for the Berry phase mediated magnetic moment, orbital magnetization, as well as thermal and Nernst conductivities. Tuning of the band gap by {\it off-resonant} light enhances the spin splitting in both the valence and conduction bands and, thus, leads to a dramatic improvement of the spin and valley thermoelectric properties.
We explore proximity-induced ferromagnetism on transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), focusing on molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe$_{2}$) ribbons with zigzag edges, deposited on ferromagnetic europium oxide (EuO). A three-orbital tight-binding model incorporates the exchange and Rashba fields induced by proximity to the EuO substrate. For in-gap Fermi levels, electronic modes in the nanoribbon are strongly spin-polarized and localized along the edges, acting as one-dimensional (1D) conducting channels with tunable spin-polarized currents. Hybrid structures such as the MoTe$_{2}$/EuO configuration …
In this paper, we discuss the effect of a periodically driving circularly polarized laser beam in the high frequency limit, on the band structure and thermal transport properties of type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals (WSMs). We develop the notion of an effective Fermi surface stemming from the time-averaged Floquet Hamiltonian and discuss its effects on the steady-state occupation numbers of electrons and holes in the linearized model. In order to compute the transport coefficients averaged over a period of the incident laser source, we employ the Kubo formalism for Floquet states and show tha…
Efficient heat dissipation to the substrate is crucial for optimal device performance in nanoelectronics. We develop a theory of electronic thermal boundary conductance (TBC) mediated by remote phonon scattering for the single-layer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors MoS$_{2}$ and WS$_{2}$, and model their electronic TBC with different dielectric substrates (SiO$_{2}$, HfO$_{2}$ and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$). Our results indicate that the electronic TBC is strongly dependent on the electron density, suggesting that it can be modulated by the gate electrode in field-effect transistors,…
We analyze the phase diagram of multilayer-graphene sandwiched between identical transition metal dichalcogenides. Recently realized in all van-der-Wall heterostructures, these sandwiches induce sizable (1-15 meV) spin orbit coupling in the graphene, offering a way to engineer topological band-structures in a pristine and gate-tunable platform. We find a rich phase diagram that depends on the number of layers $N$ and the gate-tunable perpendicular electric field. For $N > 1$ and odd, the system is a strong 2D topological insulator with a gap equal to the strength of proximity-induced Ising spi…
A valley-contrasting Berry curvature in bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides with spin-orbit coupling can generate valley magnetization when the inversion symmetry is broken, for example, by an electric field, regardless of time-reversal symmetry. A nontrivial Berry curvature can also lead to anomalous transport responses, such as the anomalous Hall effect and the anomalous Nernst effect. Applied to a bilayer WSe$_2$, an electric field can tune the Berry curvature and orbital magnetic moment, which has important consequences for the orbital magnetization and the anomalous Nernst responses.…
We study in-plane lateral heterostructures of commensurate transition-metal dichalcogenides, such as MoS$_{2}$-WS$_{2}$ and MoSe$_{2}$-WSe$_{2}$, and find interfacial and edge states that are highly localized to these regions of the heterostructure. These are one-dimensional (1D) in nature, lying within the bandgap of the bulk structure and exhibiting complex orbital and spin structure. We describe such heteroribbons with a three-orbital tight-binding model that uses first principles and experimental parameters as input, allowing us to model realistic systems. Analytical modeling for the 1D in…
When considering transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures for periodic ab-initio calculations, usually, lattice mismatch is present, and the TMDC needs to be strained. In this study we provide a systematic assessment of biaxial strain effects on the orbital, spin-orbit, and optical properties of the monolayer TMDCs using ab-initio calculations. We complement our analysis with a minimal tight-binding Hamiltonian that captures the low-energy bands of the TMDCs around K and K' valleys. We find characteristic trends of the orbital and spin-orbit parameters a…
We describe a facile technique based on polymer encapsulation to apply several percent controllable strains to monolayer and few-layer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs). We use this technique to study the lattice response to strain via polarized Raman spectroscopy in monolayer WSe2 and WS2. The application of strain causes mode-dependent redshifts, with larger shift rates observed for in-plane modes. We observe a splitting of the degeneracy of the in-plane E' modes in both materials and measure the Gruneisen parameters. At large strain, we observe that the reduction of crystal symmetry c…
Contact resistance of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides has been shown to decrease in lateral heterojunctions formed with their metallic phases but its origins remain elusive. Here we combine first principles and quantum transport calculations to rationalize the contact resistance of these structures in terms of phase, composition (WTe2, MoTe2, WSe2, and MoSe2), and length of the channel. We find that charge injection in metallic 1T'-WTe2/1T'-MoTe2 junctions is nearly ideal as electrode Bloch states remain delocalized through the channel. Mixtures of 1T' selenides and tellurides …
The development of nanomaterials with a large nonlinear susceptibility is essential for nonlinear nanophotonics. We show that transition-metal-dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotriangles have a large effective second-order susceptibility [$χ^{(2)}$] at mid-infrared to near-infrared frequencies owing to their broken centrosymmetry. $χ^{(2)}$ is calculated within the density-matrix formalism that accounts for dissipation and screening. $χ^{(2)}$ peaks in the vicinity of both two-photon resonances (specified by the geometry) and plasmon resonances (tunable via the carrier density). Aligning the resonances…

The spatial texture of internal degree of freedom of electrons has profound effects on the properties of materials. Such texture in real space can manifest as an emergent magnetic field (or Berry curvature), which is expected to induce interesting valley/spin-related transport phenomena. Moiré pattern, which emerges as a spatial variation at the interface of 2D atomic crystals, provides a natural platform for investigating such real space Berry curvature effects. Here we study moiré structures formed in homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) due to twisting, various uniform strain…
By generalizing the Kubo-Streda formula for calculating electrical conductivities to the thermoelectric coefficients, we theoretically study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a finite concentration of magnetic impurities. The ANE is found to be modulated by the impurity scattering and thermal fluctuations, simultaneously, and so exhibits rich structures in the energy space. While the anomalous Hall conductivity is half-integer quantized with the Fermi level across the magnetic-impurity-induced gap, the anomalous Nernst signal (ANS) is fully …
The ZrSiS-type compounds are Dirac semimetals and have been attracting considerable interest in recent years due to their topological electronic properties and possible applications. In particular, gapped Dirac nodes can possess large spin Berry curvatures and thus give rise to large spin Hall effect (SHE) and spin Nernst effect (SNE), which may be used to generate pure spin current for spintronics and spin caloritronics without applied magnetic field or magnetic material. In this paper we study both SHE and SNE in ZrXY (X = Si, Ge; Y = S, Se, Te) based on \textit{ab initio} relativistic band …
Shrinking the size of a bulk metal into nanoscale leads to the discreteness of electronic energy levels, the so-called Kubo gap. Renormalization of the electronic properties with a tunable and size-dependent Kubo gap renders fascinating photon emission and electron tunneling. In contrast with usual three-dimensional (3D) metal clusters, here we demonstrate that Kubo gap can be achieved with a two-dimensional (2D) metallic transition metal dichalcogenide (i.e., 1T'-phase MoTe2) nanocluster embedded in a semiconducting polymorph (i.e., 1H-phase MoTe2). Such a 1T'-1H MoTe2 nanodomain resembles a …
Recently, signatures of nonlinear Hall effects induced by Berry-curvature dipoles have been found in atomically thin 1T'/Td-WTe$_2$. In this work, we show that in strained polar transition-metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) with 2H-structures, Berry-curvature dipoles created by spin degrees of freedom lead to strong nonlinear Hall effects. Under an easily accessible uniaxial strain of order 0.2%, strong nonlinear Hall signals, characterized by a Berry-curvature dipole on the order of 1Å, arise in electron-doped polar TMDs such as MoSSe, and this is easily detectable experimentally. Moreover, the magn…
One of the most fundamental devices for electronics and optoelectronics is the PN junction, which provides the functional element of diodes, bipolar transistors, photodetectors, LEDs, and solar cells, among many other devices. In conventional PN junctions, the adjacent p- and n-type regions of a semiconductor are formed by chemical doping. Materials with ambipolar conductance, however, allow for PN junctions to be configured and modified by electrostatic gating. This electrical control enables a single device to have multiple functionalities. Here we report ambipolar monolayer WSe2 devices in …
Topological insulators (TIs) hold promise as a platform for spintronics applications due to the fascinating spin-momentum locking (SML) of the surface states. One particular interest lies in using TIs as spin-polarized sources for spintronics structures. Here, we propose the band tilt induced nonlinear Nernst effect (NLNE) in TIs as a clean and efficient route to generate high-performance spin polarization (SP). We show that in the presence of SML and hexagonal warping effect a finite band tilt can induce an imbalance of two spin carriers and effectively give rise to spin-polarized NLNE curren…
The low concentration of proton donors in alkaline HER, subsequently leading to the extra water adsorption and dissociation steps, identifies the value of active sites (edge and basal sites) and crystal phases in lowering the extra activation barrier and/or optimizing the H* adsorption kinetics; in addition, the outstanding morphology-based features (surface area, thickness, defects, disorders and crystallinity) of layered molybdenum dichalcogenide families pinpoint the roles of active sites and phases for more interpretable and feasible structure-activity analysis. In this context, hydrotherm…
Synthesized micro- and nanotubes composed of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS$_2$ are promising for many applications in nanophotonics, because they combine the abilities to emit strong exciton luminescence and to act as whispering gallery microcavities even at room temperature. In addition to tubes in the form of hollow cylinders, there is an insufficiently-studied class of twisted tubes, the flattened cross section of which rotates along the tube axis. As shown by theoretical analysis, in such nanotubes the interaction of electromagnetic waves excited at opposite sides of…
Bilayer van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures such as MoS2/WS2 and MoSe2/WSe2 have attracted much attention recently, particularly because of their type II band alignments and the formation of interlayer exciton as the lowest-energy excitonic state. In this work, we calculate the electronic and optical properties of such heterostructures with the first-principles GW+Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) method and reveal the important role of interlayer coupling in deciding the excited-state properties, including the band alignment and excitonic properties. Our calculation shows that due to the interla…
Twistronics is currently one of the most active research fields in condensed matter physics, following the discovery of correlated insulating and superconducting phases in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG). Here, we present a magnonic analogue of tBLG. We study magnons in twisted ferromagnetic bilayers (tFBL), including exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). For negligible DMI, tFBL presents discrete magnon magic angles and flat moiré minibands analogous to tBLG. The DMI, however, changes the picture and renders the system much more exotic. The DMI in tFBL induces a rich topologi…
A magnetic field can generally induce circular phonon dichroism based on the formation of Landau levels of electrons. Here, we study the magnetization-induced circular phonon dichroism in transition metal dichalcogenides, without forming Landau levels. We find that, instead of the conventional deformation potential coupling, pseudogauge-type electron-phonon coupling plays an essential role in the emergence of the phenomenon. As a concrete example, a large dichroism signal is obtained in monolayer MoTe2 on a EuO substrate, even without considering Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Due to the two-dime…
Twist- and gate-tunable proximity spin-orbit coupling, spin relaxation anisotropy, and charge-to-spin conversion in heterostructures of graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides
Employing density functional theory-based methods, we investigate monolayer and bilayer structures of hexagonal SnS$_{2}$, which is recently synthesized monolayer metal dichalcogenide. Comparison of 1H and 1T phases of monolayer SnS$_{2}$ confirms the ground state to be the 1T phase. In its bilayer structure we examine different stacking configurations of the two layers. It is found that the interlayer coupling in bilayer SnS$_{2}$ is weaker than that of typical transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) so that alternative stacking orders have similar structural parameters and they are separated…
In this Letter, a tunable valley polarization is investigated for honeycomb systems with broken inversion symmetry such as transition-metal dichalcogenide MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) monolayers through elliptical pumping. As compared to circular pumping, elliptical pumping is more universal and effective method to create coherent valley polarization. When two valleys of MX2 monolayers are doped or polarized, a novel anomalous valley orbital magnetic moment Hall effect driven by opposite Berry curvatures at different valleys is predicted and can generate orbital magnetic moment current without t…
We present a theory of optical absorption by interlayer excitons in a heterobilayer formed from transition metal dichalcogenides. The theory accounts for the presence of small relative rotations that produce a momentum shift between electron and hole bands located in different layers, and a moiré pattern in real space. Because of the momentum shift, the optically active interlayer excitons are located at the moiré Brillouin zone's corners, instead of at its center, and would have elliptical optical selection rules if the individual layers were translationally invariant. We show that the excito…
In monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, tightly bound excitons have been discovered with a valley pseudospin that can be optically addressed through polarization selection rules. Here, we show that this valley pseudospin is strongly coupled to the exciton center-of-mass motion through electron-hole exchange. This coupling realizes a massless Dirac cone with chirality index I=2 for excitons inside the light cone, i.e. bright excitons. Under moderate strain, the I=2 Dirac cone splits into two degenerate I=1 Dirac cones, and saddle points with a linear Dirac spectrum emerge in the bright e…
We study the polarization dependence of optical absorption for the modified Haldane model, which exhibits antichiral edge modes in presence of sample boundaries and has been argued to be realizable in transition metal dichalcogenides or Weyl semimetals. A rich optical phase diagram is unveiled, in which the correlations between perfect circular dichroism, pseudospin and valley polarization can be tuned independently upon varying the Fermi energy. Importantly, perfect circular dichroism and valley polarization are achieved simultaneously. This unprecedented combination of optical properties sug…
The application of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) perovskites in near-infrared and visible-range optoelectronics has been limited owing to their inherent wide bandgaps, large excitonic binding energies and low optical absorption at higher wavelengths. Here, we show that by tailoring interfacial band alignments via conjugation with low-dimensional materials like monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), the functionalities of 2D perovskites can be extended to diverse, visible-range photophysical applications. Based on the choice of individual constituents in the 2D perovskite/TMD hetero…
The strong excitonic effect in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors has enabled many fascinating light-matter interaction phenomena. Examples include strongly coupled exciton-polaritons and nearly perfect atomic monolayer mirrors. The strong light-matter interaction also opens the door for dynamical control of mechanical motion through the exciton resonance of monolayer TMDs. Here we report the observation of exciton-optomechanical coupling in a suspended monolayer MoSe2 mechanical resonator. By moderate optical pumping near the MoSe2 exciton resonance, we have observ…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, known for exhibiting strong excitonic resonances, constitute a very interesting and versatile platform for investigation of light-matter interactions. In this work we report on a strong coupling regime between excitons in monolayer WSe2 and photons confined in an open, voltage-tunable dielectric microcavity. The tunability of our system allows us to extend the exciton-polariton state over a wide energy range and, in particular, to bring the excitonic component of the lower polariton mode into resonance with other excitonic transitions in monolayer WS…
In moiré heterostructures, gate-tunable insulating phases driven by electronic correlations have been recently discovered. Here, we use transport measurements to characterize the gate-driven metal-insulator transitions and the metallic phase in twisted WSe$_2$ near half filling of the first moiré subband. We find that the metal-insulator transition as a function of both density and displacement field is continuous. At the metal-insulator boundary, the resistivity displays strange metal behaviour at low temperature with dissipation comparable to the Planckian limit. Further into the metallic ph…
We report a new class of large-gap quantum spin Hall insulators in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, namely, MX$_2$ with M=(Mo, W) and X=(S, Se, and Te), whose topological electronic properties are highly tunable by external electric field. We propose a novel topological field effect transistor made of these atomic layer materials and their van der Waals heterostructures. Our device exhibits parametrically enhanced charge-spin conductance through topologically protected transport channels, and can be rapidly switched off by electric field through topological phase transition in…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers have recently emerged as a robust and tunable moiré system for studying and designing correlated electron physics. In this work, by combining large-scale first principle calculation and continuum model approach, we provide an electronic structure theory that maps long-period heterobilayer TMD superlattices onto diatomic crystals with cations and anions. We find that the interplay between moiré potential and Coulomb interaction leads to filling-dependent charge transfer between MM and MX regions several nanometers apart. We show that the insulating…
We analyze the properties of strongly coupled excitons and photons in systems made of semiconducting two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides embedded in optical cavities. Through a detailed microscopic analysis of the coupling we unveil novel, highly tunable features of the spectrum, that result in polariton splitting and a breaking of light-matter selection rules. The dynamics of the composite polaritons is influenced by the Berry phase arising both from their constituents and from the confinement-enhanced coupling. We find that light-matter coupling emerges as a mechanism that enhan…
