Let $u(\cdot,\cdot)$ be the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension of $f.$ The first goal of this article is to establish the fractional trace type inequalities involving the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension $u(\cdot,\cdot)$ of $f.$ In doing so, firstly, we establish the fractional Sobolev/ logarithmic Sobolev/ Hardy trace inequalities in terms of $\nabla_{(x,t)}u(x,t).$ Then, we prove the fractional anisotropic Sobolev/ logarithmic Sobolev/ Hardy trace inequalities in terms of $ {\partial_{t} u(x,t)}$ or $(-Δ)^{-γ/2}u(x,t)$ only. Moreover, based on an estimate of the Fourier transform of the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension kernel and the sharp affine weighted $L^p$ Sobolev inequality, we prove that the $\dot{H}^{-β/2}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ norm of $f(x)$ can be controlled by the product of the weighted $L^p-$affine energy and the weighted $L^p-$norm of ${\partial_{t} u(x,t)}.$ The second goal of this article is to characterize non-negative measures $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+$ such that the embeddings $$\|u(\cdot,\cdot)\|_{L^{q_0,p_0}_μ(\mathbb{R}^{n+1})}\lesssim \|f\|_{\dotΛ^{p,q}_β(\mathbb{R}^n)}$$ hold for some $p_0$ and $q_0$ depending on $p$ and $q$ which are classified in three different cases: (1). $p=q\in (n/(n+β),1];$ (2) $(p,q)\in (1,n/β)\times (1,\infty);$ (3). $(p,q)\in (1,n/β)\times\{\infty\}.$ For case (1), the embeddings can be characterized in terms of an analytic condition of the variational capacity minimizing function, the iso-capacitary inequality of open balls, and other weak type inequalities. For cases (2) and (3), the embeddings are characterized by the iso-capacitary inequality for fractonal Besov capacity of open sets.
We study the isolated singularities of functions satisfying (E) (--$Δ$) s v$\pm$|v| p--1 v = 0 in $Ω$\{0}, v = 0 in R N \$Ω$, where 0 < s < 1, p > 1 and $Ω$ is a bounded domain containing the origin. We use the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension to R + x R N. We emphasize the obtention of a priori estimates, analyse the set of self-similar solutions via energy methods to characterize the singularities.
Let $P_α f(x,t)$ be the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension of a smooth function $f(x): \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+:=\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,\infty).$ The purpose of this article is twofold. Firstly, we want to characterize a nonnegative measure $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+$ such that $f(x)\rightarrow P_α f(x,t)$ induces bounded embeddings from the Lebesgue spaces $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to the $L^q(\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+,μ).$ On one hand, these embeddings will be characterized by using a newly introduced $L^p-$capacity associated with the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension. In doing so, the mixed …
Recently, Silvestre proved that certain weak solutions of the slightly supercritical surface quasi-geostrophic equation eventually become smooth. To prove this, he employed a De Giorgi type argument originated in the work of Caffarelli and Vasseur. Kiselev and Nazarov proved a variation of the result of Caffarelli and Vasseur by introducing a class of test functions. Motivated by the results of Silvestre, we will modify the class of test functions from the work of Kiselev and Nazarov and use this modified class to show that a solution to the supercritical SQG that is smooth up to a certain tim…
The present paper is the natural evolution of arXiv:1308.3606. For $s>-1$ we compare two natural types of fractional Laplacians $(-Δ)^s$, namely, the "Navier" and the "Dirichlet" ones. As a main tool, we give the "dual" Caffarelli--Silvestre and Stinga--Torrea variational characterizations of these operators for $s\in(-1,0)$.
The technique of Caffarelli and Silvestre, characterizing the fractional Laplacian as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for a function U satisfying an elliptic equation in the upper half space with one extra spatial dimension, is shown to hold for general positive, non-integer orders of the fractional Laplace operator, by showing an equivalence between the H^s norm on the boundary and a suitable higher-order seminorm of U.
We extend results of Caffarelli--Silvestre and Stinga--Torrea regarding a characterization of fractional powers of differential operators via an extension problem. Our results apply to generators of integrated families of operators, in particular to infinitesimal generators of bounded $C_0$ semigroups and operators with purely imaginary symbol. We give integral representations to the extension problem in terms of solutions to the heat equation and the wave equation.
We relate non integer powers ${\mathcal L}^{s}$, $s>0$ of a given (unbounded) positive self-adjoint operator $\mathcal L$ in a real separable Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ with a certain differential operator of order $2\lceil{s}\rceil$, acting on even curves $\mathbb R\to \mathcal H$. This extends the results by Caffarelli--Silvestre and Stinga--Torrea regarding the characterization of fractional powers of differential operators via an extension problem.
We obtain a new general extension theorem in Banach spaces for operators which are not required to be symmetric, and apply it to obtain Harnack estimates and a priori regularity for solutions of fractional powers of several second order differential operators. These include weighted elliptic and subellitptic operators in divergence form (nonnecessarily self-adjoint), and nondivergence form operators with rough coefficients. We utilize the reflection extension technique introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre.
We show that the conformally invariant fractional powers of the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group are given in terms of the scattering operator for an extension problem to the Siegel upper halfspace. Remarkably, this extension problem is different from the one studied, among others, by Caffarelli and Silvestre.
In this paper we provide an extension theorem for fractional powers of some pseudo-differential operators $P(D)$. These extensions yields realization of the fractional powers of some pseudo-differential operators in the spirit of Caffarelli and Silvestre \cite{CSilv}. In particular every fractional power of a local pseudo-differential operator can be realized locally. We also give some properties of the relativistic Schrödinger operator $\Dsm$.
In this work we consider an inhomogeneous two-phase obstacle-type problem driven by the fractional Laplacian. In particular, making use of the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension, Almgren and Monneau type monotonicity formulas and blow-up analysis, we provide a classification of the possible vanishing orders, which implies the strong unique continuation property. Moreover, we prove a stratification result for the nodal set, together with estimates on its Hausdorff dimensions, for both the regular and the singular part. The main tools come from geometric measure theory and amount to Whitney's Extens…
In this paper, we consider a Lewy-Stampacchia-type inequality for the fractional Laplacian on a bounded domain in Euclidean space. Using this inequality, we can show the well-posedness of fractional-type anomalous unidirectional diffusion equations. This study is an extension of the work by Akagi-Kimura (2019) for the standard Laplacian. However, there exist several difficulties due to the nonlocal feature of the fractional Laplacian. We overcome those difficulties employing the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension of the fractional Laplacian.
We prove interior Harnack's inequalities for solutions of fractional nonlocal equations. Our examples include fractional powers of divergence form elliptic operators with potentials, operators arising in classical orthogonal expansions and the radial Laplacian. To get the results we use an analytic method based on a generalization of the Caffarelli--Silvestre extension problem, the Harnack's inequality for degenerate Schrödinger operators proved by C. E. Gutiérrez, and a transference method. In this manner we apply local PDE techniques to nonlocal operators. On the way a maximum principle and …
In this note I present some properties of sub-Laplaceans associated with a collection of smooth vector fields satisfying Hörmander's finite rank assumption. One notable aspect of the paper is the development of the fractional powers of sub-Laplaceans as Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps of an extension problem inspired to the famous 2007 work of Caffarelli and Silvestre for the standard Laplacean. A key tool is an extension problem for the fractional heat equation for which I compute the relevant Poisson kernel. I then use the latter to: 1) find the Poisson kernel for the time-independent case; and 2)…
We establish a Liouville-type theorem for a subcritical nonlinear problem, involving a fractional power of the sub-Laplacian in the Heisenberg group. To prove our result we will use the local realization of fractional CR covariant operators, which can be constructed as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of a degenerate elliptic equation in the spirit of Caffarelli and Silvestre, as established in \cite{FGMT}. The main tools in our proof are the CR inversion and the moving plane method, applied to the solution of the lifted problem in the half-space $\mathbb H^n\times \mathbbR^+$.
We study nonlinear elliptic equations for operators corresponding to non-stable Lévy diffusions. We include a sum of fractional Laplacians of different orders. Such operators are infinitesimal generators of non-stable (i.e., non self-similar) Lévy processes. We establish the regularity of solutions, as well as sharp energy estimates. As a consequence, we prove a 1-D symmetry result for monotone solutions to Allen-Cahn type equations with a non-stable Lévy diffusion. These operators may still be realized as local operators using a system of PDEs ---in the spirit of the extension problem of Caff…
This master thesis is based on the paper "Sharp commutator estimates via harmonic extensions" by Lenzmann and Schikorra, in which they proposed a method to prove estimates for commutators involving Riesz transforms, fractional Laplacians and Riesz potentials, see arXiv:1609.08547. These proofs only involve harmonic extensions to the upper half-space and integration by parts next to some elementary transfromations, since the deeper theory is concentrated in a variety of trace characterization results which can be used as a blackbox. In the first half of this thesis, after collecting some elemen…
In this article we study the strong unique continuation property for solutions of higher order (variable coefficient) fractional Schrödinger operators. We deduce the strong unique continuation property in the presence of subcritical and critical Hardy type potentials. In the same setting, we address the unique continuation property from measurable sets of positive Lebesgue measure. As applications we prove the antilocality of the higher order fractional Laplacian and Runge type approximation theorems which have recently been exploited in the context of nonlocal Calderón type problems. As our m…
We study the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{σ/2}$ on the $n$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^n$, $n\geq1$. First, we present a general extension problem that describes \textit{any} fractional power $L^γ$, $γ>0$, where $L$ is a general nonnegative selfadjoint operator defined in an $L^2$-space. This generalizes to all $γ>0$ and to a large class of operators the previous known results by Caffarelli and Silvestre. In particular it applies to the fractional Laplacian on the torus. The extension problem is used to prove interior and boundary Harnack's inequalities for $(-Δ)^{σ/2}$, when $0<σ<2$. We dedu…
In this article we obtain improved versions of Stein-Weiss and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities, involving Besov norms of negative smoothness. As an application of the former, we derive the existence of extremals of the Stein-Weiss inequality in certain cases, some of which are not contained in the celebrated theorem of E. Lieb.
We establish a Liouville type theorem for the fractional Lane-Emden system: \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\begin{array}{l@{\quad }l} (-Δ)^αu=v^q&{\rm in}\,\,\R^N,\\ (-Δ)^αv=u^p&{\rm in}\,\,\R^N, \end{array} \right. \end{eqnarray*} where $ α\in(0,1) $, $ N>2α$ and $ p,q $ are positive real numbers and in an appropriate new range. To prove our result we will use the local realization of fractional Laplacian, which can be constructed as Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of a degenerate elliptic equation in the spirit of Caffarelli and Silvestre \cite{CS}. Our proof is based on a monotonicity argument for …
The Branson-Gover operators are conformally invariant differential operators of even degree acting on differential forms. They can be interpolated by a holomorphic family of conformally invariant integral operators called fractional Branson-Gover operators. For Euclidean spaces we show that the fractional Branson-Gover operators can be obtained as Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators of certain conformally invariant boundary value problems, generalizing the work of Caffarelli-Silvestre for the fractional Laplacians to differential forms. The relevant boundary value problems are studied in detail and…
We study one-sided nonlocal equations of the form $$\int_{x_0}^\infty\frac{u(x)-u(x_0)}{(x-x_0)^{1+α}} dx=f(x_0),$$ on the real line. Notice that to compute this nonlocal operator of order $0<α<1$ at a point $x_0$ we need to know the values of $u(x)$ to the right of $x_0$, that is, for $x\geq x_0$. We show that the operator above corresponds to a fractional power of a one-sided first order derivative. Maximum principles and a characterization with an extension problem in the spirit of Caffarelli--Silvestre and Stinga--Torrea are proved. It is also shown that these fractional equations can be s…
We introduce three representation formulas for the fractional $p$-Laplace operator in the whole range of parameters $0<s<1$ and $1<p<\infty$. Note that for $p\ne 2$ this a nonlinear operator. The first representation is based on a splitting procedure that combines a renormalized nonlinearity with the linear heat semigroup. The second adapts the nonlinearity to the Caffarelli-Silvestre linear extension technique. The third one is the corresponding nonlinear version of the Balakrishnan formula. We also discuss the correct choice of the constant of the fractional $p$-Laplace operator in order to …
We describe a new interpretation of the fractional GJMS operators as generalized Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators associated to weighted GJMS operators on naturally associated smooth metric measure spaces. This gives a geometric interpretation of the Caffarelli--Silvestre extension for $(-Δ)^γ$ when $γ\in(0,1)$, and both a geometric interpretation and a curved analogue of the higher order extension found by R. Yang for $(-Δ)^γ$ when $γ>1$. We give three applications of this correspondence. First, we exhibit some energy identities for the fractional GJMS operators in terms of energies in the comp…
We identify a class of non-local integro-differential operators $K$ in $\mathbb{R}$ with Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps in the half-plane $\mathbb{R} \times (0, \infty)$ for appropriate elliptic operators $L$. More precisely, we prove a bijective correspondence between Lévy operators $K$ with non-local kernels of the form $ν(y - x)$, where $ν(x)$ and $ν(-x)$ are completely monotone functions on $(0, \infty)$, and elliptic operators $L = a(y) \partial_{xx} + 2 b(y) \partial_{x y} + \partial_{yy}$. This extends a number of previous results in the area, where symmetric operators have been studied: the…
In this article, we present a solution to the problem: "Which type of linear operators can be realized by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with the operator $-Δ-a(z)\frac{\partial^{2}}{\partial z^2}$ on an extension problem?", which was raised in the pioneering work [Comm. Par.Diff. Equ. 32 (2007)] by Caffarelli and Silvestre. In fact, we even go a step further by replacing the negative Laplace operator $-Δ$ on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ by an $m$-accretive operator $A$ on a general Banach space $X$ and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator by the Dirichlet-to-Wentzell operator. We establish uni…
We introduce a definition of the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s(\cdot)}$ with spatially variable order $s:Ω\to [0,1]$ and study the solvability of the associated Poisson problem on a bounded domain $Ω$. The initial motivation arises from the extension results of Caffarelli and Silvestre, and Stinga and Torrea; however the analytical tools and approaches developed here are new. For instance, in some cases we allow the variable order $s(\cdot)$ to attain the values $0$ and $1$ leading to a framework on weighted Sobolev spaces with non-Muckenhoupt weights. Initially, and under minimal assumptions,…
