Palu defined the index with respect to a cluster tilting object in a suitable triangulated category, in order to better understand the Caldero-Chapoton map that exhibits the connection between cluster algebras and representation theory. We push this further by proposing an index with respect to a contravariantly finite, rigid subcategory, and we show this index behaves similarly to the classical index.
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a skeletally small triangulated category with split idempotents, which is thus an extriangulated category $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$. Suppose $\mathcal{X}$ is a contravariantly finite, rigid subcategory in $\mathcal{C}$. We define the index $\mathrm{ind}_{\mathcal{X}}(C)$ of an object $C\in\mathcal{C}$ with respect to $\mathcal{X}$ as the $K_{0}$-class $[C]_{\mathcal{X}}$ in Grothendieck group $K_{0}(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{X}},\mathfrak{s}_{\mathcal{X}})$ of the relative extriangulated category $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{X}},\mathfrak{s}_{\mathcal{X}})$. By analogy to the classical case, we give an additivity formula with error term for $\mathrm{ind}_{\mathcal{X}}$ on triangles in $\mathcal{C}$.
In case $\mathcal{X}$ is contained in another suitable subcategory $\mathcal{T}$ of $\mathcal{C}$, there is a surjection $Q\colon K_{0}(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{T}},\mathfrak{s}_{\mathcal{T}}) \twoheadrightarrow K_{0}(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{X}},\mathfrak{s}_{\mathcal{X}})$. Thus, in order to describe $K_{0}(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{X}},\mathfrak{s}_{\mathcal{X}})$, it suffices to determine $K_{0}(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{T}},\mathfrak{s}_{\mathcal{T}})$ and $\operatorname{Ker} Q$. We do this under certain assumptions.
We put cluster tilting in ageneral framework by showing that any quotient of a triangulated category modulo a tilting subcategory (that is, a maximal one-orthogonal subcategory) carries an abelian structure. These abelian quotients turn out to be module categories of Goreisten algebras of dimension at most one.
The stable module category has been realized as a subcategory of the unbounded homotopy category of projective modules by Kato. We construct the triangulated hull of this subcategory inside the homotopy category. This can also be used to characterize self-injective algebras. Moreover, we extend this construction to a subcategory closed under an induced Nakayama functor. Both of these categories are shown to be preserved by stable equivalences of Morita type. As an application, we study the Grothendieck group of this triangulated hull and compare it with the stable Grothendieck group.
We study the maximal rigid subcategories in $2-$CY triangulated categories and their endomorphism algebras. Cluster tilting subcategories are obviously maximal rigid; we prove that the converse is true if the $2-$CY triangulated categories admit a cluster tilting subcategory. As a generalization of a result of [KR], we prove that any maximal rigid subcategory is Gorenstein with Gorenstein dimension at most 1. Similar as cluster tilting subcategory, one can mutate maximal rigid subcategories at any indecomposable object. If two maximal rigid objects are reachable via mutations, then their endom…
This paper introduces the concept of the dimension of a triangulated category with respect to a fixed full subcategory. For the bounded derived category of an abelian category, upper bounds of the dimension with respect to a contravariantly finite subcategory and a resolving subcategory are given. Our methods not only recover some known results on the dimensions of derived categories in the sense of Rouquier, but also apply to various commutative and non-commutative noetherian rings.
We prove that for $d \geq 2$, an algebraic $d$-Calabi-Yau triangulated category endowed with a $d$-cluster tilting subcategory is the stable category of a DG category which is perfectly $(d+1)$-Calabi-Yau and carries a non degenerate $t$-structure whose heart has enough projectives.
For a triangulated category T, if C is a cluster-tilting subcategory of T, then the quotient category T\C is an abelian category. Under certain conditions, the converse also holds. This is an very important result of cluster-tilting theory, due to Koenig-Zhu and Beligiannis. Now let B be a suitable extriangulated category, which is a simultaneous generalization of triangulated categories and exact categories. We introduce the notion of pre-cluster tilting subcategory C of B, which is a generalization of cluster tilting subcategory. We show that C is cluster tilting if and only if B/C is abelia…
Let {\cal T} be a triangulated category, {\cal A} a full subcategory of {\cal T} and {\cal X} a functorially finite subcategory of {\cal A}. If {\cal A} has the properties that any {\cal X}-monomorphism of {\cal A} has a cone and any {\cal X}-epimorphism has a cocone. Then the subfactor category {\cal A/[X]} admits a pretriangulated structure in the sense of [BR]. Moreover the above pretriangulated category {\cal A/[X]} with ({\cal X},{\cal X}[1]) = 0 becomes a triangulated category if and only if ({\cal A},{\cal A}) forms an {\cal X}-mutation pair and {\cal A} is closed under extensions.
We study singularity categories through Gorenstein objects in triangulated categories and silting theory. Let $ω$ be a semi-selforthogonal (or presilting) subcategory of a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$. We introduce the notion of $ω$-Gorenstein objects, which is far extended version of Gorenstein projective modules and Gorenstein injective modules in triangulated categories. We prove that the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{G}_ω}$, where $\mathcal{G}_ω$ is the subcategory of all $ω$-Gorenstein objects, is a triangulated category and it is, under some conditions, triangle equivalent …
Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu by extracting the similarities between exact categories and triangulated categories. A notion of mutation of subcategories in an extriangulated category is defined in this article. Let $\cal A$ be an extension closed subcategory of an extriangulated category $\cal C$. Then the quotient category $\cal M:=\cal{A}/\cal{X}$ carries naturally a triangulated structure whenever $(\cal A,\cal A)$ forms an $\cal X$-mutation pair. This result unifies many previous constructions of triangulated quotient categories, and using it gives a classif…
We study abelian localizations of triangulated categories induced by rigid contravariantly finite subcategories, and also triangulated structures on subfactor categories of triangulated categories. In this context we generalize recent results of Buan-Marsh and Iyama-Yoshino. We also extend basic results of Keller-Reiten concerning the Gorenstein and the Calabi-Yau property for categories arising from certain rigid, not necessarily cluster tilting, subcategories, as well as several results of the literature concerning the connections between 2-cluster tilting subcategories of triangulated categ…
We study abelian quotient categories A=T/J, where T is a triangulated category and J is an ideal of T. Under the assumption that the quotient functor is cohomological we show that it is representable and give an explicit description of the functor. We give technical criteria for when a representable functor is a quotient functor, and a criterion for when J gives rise to a cluster-tilting subcategory of T. We show that the quotient functor preserves the AR-structure. As an application we show that if T is a finite 2-Calabi-Yau category, then with very few exceptions J is a cluster-tilting subca…
In a triangulated category T with a pair of triangulated subcategories X and Y, one may consider the subcategory of extensions X*Y. We give conditions for X*Y to be triangulated and use them to provide tools for constructing stable t-structures. In particular, we show how to construct so-called triangles of recollements, that is, triples of stable t-structures of the form (X,Y), (Y,Z), (Z,X). We easily recover some triangles of recollements known from the literature.
We give a sufficient condition for a Verdier quotient $\ct/\cs$ of a triangulated category $\ct$ by a thick subcategory $\cs$ to be realized inside of $\ct$ as an ideal quotient. As applications, we deduce three significant results by Buchweitz, Orlov and Amiot--Guo--Keller.
The aim of the paper is to discuss the relation subgroups of the Grothendieck groups of extriangulated categories and certain other subgroups. It is shown that a locally finite extriangulated category $\C$ has Auslander-Reiten $\E-$triangles and the relations of the Grothendieck group $K_{0}(\C)$ are generated by the Auslander-Rieten $\E-$triangles. A partial converse result is given when restricting to the triangulated categories with a cluster tilting subcategory: in the triangulated category $\C$ with a cluster tilting subcategory, the relations of the Grothendieck group $K_0(\C)$ are gener…
We give a general parametrization of all the recollement data for a triangulated category with a set of generators. From this we deduce a characterization of when a perfectly generated (or aisled) triangulated category is a recollement of triangulated categories generated by a single compact object. Also, we use homological epimorphisms of dg categories to give a complete and explicit description of all the recollement data for (or smashing subcategories of) the derived category of a k-flat dg category. In the final part we give a bijection between smashing subcategories of compactly generated…

We give criteria for subcategories of a compactly generated algebraic triangulated category to be precovering or preenveloping. These criteria are formulated in terms of closure conditions involving products, coproducts, directed homotopy colimits and further conditions involving the notion of purity. In particular, we provide sufficient closure conditions for a subcategory of a compactly generated algebraic triangulated category to be a torsion class. Finally we explore applications of the previous results to the theory of recollements.
For a suitable triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$ with a Serre functor $S$ and a full precovering subcategory $\mathcal{C}$ closed under summands and extensions, an indecomposable object $C$ in $\mathcal{C}$ is called Ext-projective if Ext$^1(C,\mathcal{C})=0$. Then there is no Auslander-Reiten triangle in $\mathcal{C}$ with end term $C$. In this paper, we show that if, for such an object $C$, there is a minimal right almost split morphism $β:B\rightarrow C$ in $\mathcal{C}$, then $C$ appears in something very similar to an Auslander-Reiten triangle in $\mathcal{C}$: an essentially unique tri…
For a tensor triangulated category and any regular cardinal $α$ we study the frame of $α$-localizing tensor ideals and its associated space of points. For a well-generated category and its frame of localizing tensor ideals we provide conditions such that the associated space is obtained by refining the topology of the corresponding space for the triangulated subcategory of $α$-compact objects. This is illustrated by several known examples for $α=\aleph_0$, and new spaces arise for $α>\aleph_0$.
Let C be triangulated category and X a cluster tilting subcategory of C. Koenig and Zhu showed that the quotient category C/X is Gorenstein of Gorenstein dimension at most one. The notion of an extriangulated category was introduced by Nakaoka and Palu as a simultaneous generalization of exact categories and triangulated categories. Now let C be extriangulated category with enough projectives and enough injectives, and X a cluster tilting subcategory of C. In this article, we show that under certain conditions the quotient category C/X is Gorenstein of Gorenstein dimension at most one. As an a…
We call a triangulated category \emph{hereditary} provided that it is equivalent to the bounded derived category of a hereditary abelian category, where the equivalence is required to commute with the translation functors. If the triangulated category is algebraical, we may replace the equivalence by a triangle equivalence. We give two intrinsic characterizations of hereditary triangulated categories using a certain full subcategory and the non-existence of certain paths. We apply them to piecewise hereditary algebras.
The category of modules over the endomorphism algebra of a rigid object in a Hom-finite triangulated category C has been given two different descriptions: On the one hand, as shown by Osamu Iyama and Yuji Yoshino, it is equivalent to an ideal quotient of a subcategory of C. On the other hand, Aslak Buan and Robert Marsh proved that this module category is also equivalent to some localisation of C. In this paper, we give a conceptual interpretation, inspired from homotopical algebra, of this double description. Our main aim, yet to be acheived, is to generalise Buan-Marsh's result to the case o…
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring. As an analogue of the notion of the dimension of a triangulated category defined by Rouquier, the notion of the dimension of a subcategory of finitely generated R-modules is introduced in this paper. We found evidence that certain categories over nice singularities have small dimensions. When R is Cohen-Macaulay, under a mild assumption it is proved that finiteness of the dimension of the full subcategory consisting of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules which are locally free on the punctured spectrum is equivalent to saying that R is an isolated singu…
For an exact category $\mathcal{E}$ with enough projectives and with a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory, we show that the singularity category of $\mathcal{E}$ admits a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory. To do this we introduce cluster tilting subcategories of left triangulated categories, and we show that there is a correspondence between cluster tilting subcategories of $\mathcal{E}$ and $\underline{\mathcal{E}}$. We also deduce that the Gorenstein projectives of $\mathcal{E}$ admit a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory under some assumptions. Finally, we compute the $…
We study smashing subcategories of a triangulated category with coproducts via silting theory. Our main result states that for derived categories of dg modules over a non-positive differential graded ring, every compactly generated localising subcategory is generated by a partial silting object. In particular, every such smashing subcategory admits a silting t-structure.
We introduce the notion of mutation of $n$-cluster tilting subcategories in a triangulated category with Auslander-Reiten-Serre duality. Using this idea, we are able to obtain the complete classifications of rigid Cohen-Macaulay modules over certain Veronese subrings.
Let $k$ be a field and $\mathcal{C}$ a $k$-linear, Hom-finite triangulated category with split idempotents. In this paper, we show that under suitable circumstances, the Grothendieck group of $\mathcal{C}$, denoted $K_0(\mathcal{C})$, can be expressed as a quotient of the split Grothendieck group of a higher-cluster tilting subcategory of $\mathcal{C}$. Assume that $n\geq 2$ is an even integer, $\mathcal{C}$ is $n$-Calabi Yau and has an $n$-cluster tilting subcategory $\mathcal{T}$. Then, for every indecomposable $M$ in $\mathcal{T}$, there is an Auslander-Reiten $(n+2)$-angle in $\mathcal{T}$…
We show that the relative Auslander-Buchweitz context on a triangulated category $\T$ coincides with the notion of co-$t$-structure on certain triangulated subcategory of $\T$ (see Theorem \ref{M2}). In the Krull-Schmidt case, we stablish a bijective correspondence between co-$t$-structures and cosuspended, precovering subcategories (see Theorem \ref{correspond}). We also give a characterization of bounded co-$t$-structures in terms of relative homological algebra. The relationship between silting classes and co-$t$-structures is also studied. We prove that a silting class $ω$ induces a bounde…
Let T be a locally finite triangulated category with an autoequivalence F such that the orbit category T/F is triangulated. We show that if X is an m-cluster tilting subcategory, then the image of X in T/F is an m-cluster tilting subcategory if and only if X is F-perodic. We show that for path-algebras of Dynking quivers δone may study the periodic properties of n-cluster tilting objects in the n-cluster category Cn(kδ) to obtain information on periodicity of the preimage as n-cluster tilting subcategories of Db(kδ). Finally we classify the periodic properties of all 2-cluster tilting objects …
We give a complete classification of (co)torsion pairs in finite $2$-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories with maximal rigid objects which are not cluster tilting. These finite $2$-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories are divided into two main classes: one denoted by $\mathcal{A}_{n,t}$ called of type $A$, and the other denoted by $D_{n,t}$ called of type $D$. By using the geometric model of cluster categories of type $A, $ or type $D$, we give a geometric description of (co)torsion pairs in $\mathcal{A}_{n,t}$ or $D_{n,t}$ respectively, via defining the periodic Ptolemy diagrams. This allows to c…
Let B be an extriangulated category with enough projectives and enough injectives. Let C be a fully rigid subcategory of B which admits a twin cotorsion pair ((C,K),(K,D)). The quotient category B/K is abelian, we assume that it is hereditary and has finite length. In this article, we study the relation between support tilting subcategories of B/K and maximal relative rigid subcategories of B. More precisely, we show that the image of any cluster tilting subcategory of B is support tilting in B/K and any support tilting subcategory in B/K can be lifted to a unique relative maximal rigid subcat…
In this survey we explain the results of the recent article arXiv:1806.06471. Following a 1973 article by Lawvere one can define metrics on categories, and following Kelly's 1982 book one can complete a category with respect to its metric. We specialize these general constructions to triangulated categories, and restrict our attention to "good metrics". And the remarkable new theorem is that, when we start with a triangulated category $\mathcal S$ with a good metric, its completion $\mathfrak{L}(\mathcal{S})$ contains an interesting subcategory $\mathfrak{S}(\mathcal{S})$ which is always trian…
In this paper, we study the conjecture II.1.9 of Cluster structures for 2-Calabi-Yau categories and unipotent groups, which said that any maximal rigid object without loops or 2-cycles in its quiver is a cluster tilting object in a connected Hom-finite triangulated 2-CY category C. We obtain some conditions equivalent to the conjecture, and using them we proved the conjecture.
We define the Grothendieck group of an $n$-exangulated category. For $n$ odd, we show that this group shares many properties with the Grothendieck group of an exact or a triangulated category. In particular, we classify dense complete subcategories of an $n$-exangulated category with an $n$-(co)generator in terms of subgroups of the Grothendieck group. This unifies and extends results of Thomason, Bergh--Thaule, Matsui and Zhu--Zhuang for triangulated, $(n+2)$-angulated, exact and extriangulated categories, respectively. We also introduce the notion of an $n$-exangulated subcategory and prove …
We show that the category of finite-dimensional modules over the endomorphism algebra of a rigid object in a Hom-finite triangulated category is equivalent to the Gabriel-Zisman localisation of the category with respect to a certain class of maps. This generalises the 2-Calabi-Yau tilting theorem of Keller-Reiten, in which the module category is obtained as a factor category, to the rigid case.
Let $\mathcal{T}$ be a Krull-Schmidt, Hom-finite triangulated category with suspension functor $[1]$. Let $R$ be a basic rigid object, $Γ$ the endomorphism algebra of $R$, and $\operatorname{\mathsf{pr}}(R)\subseteq \mathcal{T}$ the subcategory of objects finitely presented by $R$. We investigate the relative rigid objects, \ie $R[1]$-rigid objects of $\mathcal{T}$. Our main results show that the $R[1]$-rigid objects in $\operatorname{\mathsf{pr}}(R)$ are in bijection with $τ$-rigid $Γ$-modules, and the maximal $R[1]$-rigid objects with respect to $\operatorname{\mathsf{pr}}(R)$ are in bijecti…
As a generalization of acyclic 2-Calabi-Yau categories, we consider 2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory; we study their cluster-tilting subcategories and the cluster combinatorics that they encode. We show that such categories have a cluster structure. Triangulated 2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory are closely related to representations of certain semi-hereditary categories, more specifically to representations of thread quivers. Thread quivers are a tool to classify and study certain semi-hereditary categories using both quiver…
It is shown that the silting reduction $\ct/\thick\cp$ of a triangulated category $\ct$ with respect to a presilting subcategory $\cp$ can be realized as a certain subfactor category of $\ct$, and that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of (pre)silting subcategories of $\ct$ containing $\cp$ and the set of (pre)silting subcategories of $\ct/\thick\cp$. This is analogous to a result for Calabi-Yau reduction. This result is applied to show that Amiot-Guo-Keller's construction of $d$-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories with $d$-cluster-tilting objects takes silting reduction to C…
We study the projective dimensions of the restriction of functors Hom(-,X) to a contravariantly finite rigid subcategory T of a triangulated category C. We show that the projective dimension of Hom(-,X)|T is at most one if and only if there are no non-zero morphisms between objects in T[1] factoring through X, when the object X belongs to a suitable subcategory of C. As a consequence, we obtain a characterisation of the objects of infinite projective dimension in the category of finitely presented contravariant functors on a cluster-tilting subcategory of C.
Silting and Calabi-Yau reductions are important process in representation theory to construct new triangulated categories from given one, which are similar to Verdier quotient. In this paper, first we introduce a new reduction process of triangulated category, which is analogous to the silting (Calabi-Yau) reduction. For a triangulated category $\cal T$ with a pre-simple-minded collection (=pre-SMC) $\cal R$, we construct a new triangulated category $\cal U$ such that the SMCs in $\cal U$ bijectively correspond to those in $\cal T$ containing $\cal R$. Secondly, we give an analogue of Buchweit…
The original definition of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky has been categorified and generalised in several ways over the course of the past 20 years, giving rise to cluster theory. This study lead to Iyama and Yang's generalised cluster categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ coming from $n$-Calabi-Yau triples $(\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{T}^{fd}, \mathcal{M})$. In this paper, we use some classic tools of homological algebra to give a deeper understanding of such categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$. Let $k$ be a field, $n\geq 3$ an integer and $\mathcal{T}$ a $k$-linear triangulat…
For a Calabi-Yau triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ of Calabi-Yau dimension $d$ with a $d-$cluster tilting subcategory $\mathcal{T}$, it is proved that the decomposition of $\mathcal{C}$ is determined by the special decomposition of $\mathcal{T}$, namely, $\mathcal{C}=\oplus_{i\in I}\mathcal{C}_i$, where $\mathcal{C}_i, i\in I$ are triangulated subcategories, if and only if $\mathcal{T}=\oplus_{i\in I}\mathcal{T}_i,$ where $\mathcal{T}_i, i\in I$ are subcategories with $Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{T}_i[t],\mathcal{T}_j)=0, \forall 1\leq t\leq d-2$ and $i\not= j.$ This induces that the Gabriel …
In the setting of compactly generated triangulated categories, we show that the heart of a (co)silting t-structure is a Grothendieck category if and only if the (co)silting object satisfies a purity assumption. Moreover, in the cosilting case the previous conditions are related to the coaisle of the t-structure being a definable subcategory. If we further assume our triangulated category to be algebraic, it follows that the heart of any nondegenerate compactly generated t-structure is a Grothendieck category.
Let C be a triangulated category with a Serre functor S and X a non-zero contravariantly finite rigid subcategory of C. Then X is cluster tilting if and only if the quotient category C/X is abelian and S(X)=X[2]. As an application, this result generalizes work by Beligiannis.
Let $\mathscr{C}$ be a 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category, and let $\mathscr{T}$ be a cluster tilting subcategory of $\mathscr{C}$. An important result from Dehy and Keller tells us that a rigid object $c \in \mathscr{C}$ is uniquely defined by its index with respect to $\mathscr{T}$. The notion of triangulated categories extends to the notion of $(d+2)$-angulated categories. Thanks to a paper by Oppermann and Thomas, we now have a definition for cluster tilting subcategories in higher dimensions. This paper proves that under a technical assumption, an indecomposable object in a $(d+2)$-angula…
We prove that some subquotient categories of one-sided triangulated categories are abelian. This unifies a result by Iyama-Yoshino in the case of triangulated categories and a result by Demonet-Liu in the case of exact categories.
If $k$ is a field, $A$ a finite dimensional $k$-algebra, then the simple $A$-modules form a simple minded collection in the derived category $\operatorname{D}^b( \operatorname{mod} A )$. Their extension closure is $\operatorname{mod} A$; in particular, it is abelian. This situation is emulated by a general simple minded collection $\mathcal{S}$ in a suitable triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, the extension closure $\langle \mathcal{S} \rangle$ is abelian, and there is a tilting theory for such abelian subcategories of $\mathcal{C}$. These statements follow from $\langle \mathc…
If two cluster-tilting objects of an acyclic cluster category are related by a mutation, then their endomorphism algebras are nearly-Morita equivalent [Buan-Marsh-Reiten], i.e. their module categories are equivalent "up to a simple module". This result has been generalised by D. Yang, using a result of P-G. Plamondon, to any simple mutation of maximal rigid objects in a 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated category. In this paper, we investigate the more general case of any mutation of a (non-necessarily maximal) rigid object in a triangulated category with a Serre functor. In that setup, the endomorphi…
