We consider the problem of interaction-aware motion planning for automated vehicles in general traffic situations. We model the interaction between the controlled vehicle and surrounding road users using a generalized potential game, in which each road user is assumed to minimize a common cost function subject to shared (collision avoidance) constraints. We propose a quadratic penalty method to deal with the shared constraints and solve the resulting optimal control problem online using an Augmented Lagrangian method based on PANOC. Secondly, we present a simple methodology for learning preferences and constraints of other road users online, based on observed behavior. Through extensive simulations in a highway merging scenario, we demonstrate the practical efficacy of the overall approach as well as the benefits of the proposed online learning scheme.
We propose a Stochastic MPC (SMPC) approach for autonomous driving which incorporates multi-modal, interaction-aware predictions of surrounding vehicles. For each mode, vehicle motion predictions are obtained by a control model described using a basis of fixed features with unknown weights. The proposed SMPC formulation finds optimal controls which serves two purposes: 1) reducing conservatism of the SMPC by optimizing over parameterized control laws and 2) prediction and estimation of feature weights used in interaction-aware modeling using Kalman filtering. The proposed approach is demonstra…
Sequential and terminal constraint feasibility of the model predictive control (MPC) play important roles in ensuring MPC control continuity. This study thus investigates these two properties theoretically using an MPC model for vehicle platooning and eco-driving strategy at signalized intersections. This study is served as a supplement material for our paper coming soon.
In this paper, we propose a novel model predictive control (MPC) framework for output tracking that deals with partially unknown constraints. The MPC scheme optimizes over a learning and a backup trajectory. The learning trajectory aims to explore unknown and potentially unsafe areas, if and only if this might lead to a potential performance improvement. On the contrary, the backup trajectory lies in the known space, and is intended to ensure safety and convergence. The cost function for the learning trajectory is divided into a tracking and an offset cost, while the cost function for the back…
Lane changing and lane merging remains a challenging task for autonomous driving, due to the strong interaction between the controlled vehicle and the uncertain behavior of the surrounding traffic participants. The interaction induces a dependence of the vehicles' states on the (stochastic) dynamics of the surrounding vehicles, increasing the difficulty of predicting future trajectories. Furthermore, the small relative distances cause traditional robust approaches to become overly conservative, necessitating control methods that are explicitly aware of inter-vehicle interaction. Towards these …
A two-phase model predictive controller (MPC) is proposed for underactuated surface vessel operation in confined environments. For general driving maneuvers (phase one) the ship's geometry is not considered explicitly while in more restricted areas (stage two) which occur, e.g., in mooring maneuvers, the ship's geometry is approximated to ensure collision avoidance. To remove the dynamical constraint in the problem setup, the differential flatness of the fully actuated system is exploited and the flat outputs are parameterized using B-spline functions. Underactuated behavior is retained by mea…

Vehicle platooning has been shown to be quite fruitful in the transportation industry to enhance fuel economy, road throughput, and driving comfort. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is widely used in literature for platoon control to achieve certain objectives, such as safely reducing the distance among consecutive vehicles while following the leader vehicle. In this paper, we propose a Distributed Nonlinear MPC (DNMPC), based upon an existing approach, to control a heterogeneous dynamic platoon with unidirectional topologies, handling possible cut-in/cut-out maneuvers. The introduced method add…
This paper presents a new approach to solve linear and nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) problems that requires small memory footprint and throughput and is particularly suitable when the model and/or controller parameters change at runtime. Typically MPC requires two phases: 1) construct an optimization problem based on the given MPC parameters (prediction model, tuning weights, prediction horizon, and constraints), which results in a quadratic or nonlinear programming problem, and then 2) call an optimization algorithm to solve the resulting problem. In the proposed approach the probl…
In this paper, model predictive control (MPC) strategies are proposed for dead-beat control of linear systems with and without state and control constraints. In unconstrained MPC, deadbeat performance can be guaranteed by setting the control horizon to the system dimension, and adding an terminal equality constraint. It is proved that the unconstrained deadbeat MPC is equivalent to linear deadbeat control. The proposed constrained deadbeat MPC is designed by setting the control horizon equal to the system dimension and penalizing only the terminal cost. The recursive feasibility and deadbeat p…
