Given a moduli problem posed using Geometric Invariant Theory, one can use Non-Reductive Geometric Invariant Theory to quotient unstable HKKN strata and construct 'moduli spaces of unstable objects', extending the usual moduli classifications. After giving a self-contained account of how to do this, we apply this method to construct moduli spaces for certain unstable coherent sheaves of HN length 2 on a projective scheme, which we call $τ$-stable sheaves. This extends a previous result of Brambila-Paz and Mata-Gutiérrez for rank two vector bundles on a curve.
We establish in this article convergence results of normalized Harder-Narasimhan polygons both in geometric and in arithmetic frameworks by introducing the Harder-Narasimhan filtration indexed by $\mathbb R$ and the associated Borel probability measure.
For any flat family of pure-dimensional coherent sheaves on a family of projective schemes, the Harder-Narasimhan type (in the sense of Gieseker semistability) of its restriction to each fiber is known to vary semicontinuously on the parameter scheme of the family. This defines a stratification of the parameter scheme by locally closed subsets, known as the Harder-Narasimhan stratification. In this note, we show how to endow each Harder-Narasimhan stratum with the structure of a locally closed subscheme of the parameter scheme, which enjoys the universal property that under any base change the…
We give an example of an orthogonal bundle where the Harder-Narasimhan filtration, with respect to Gieseker semistability, of its underlying vector bundle does not correspond to any parabolic reduction of the orthogonal bundle. A similar example is given for the symplectic case.
For any family of principal bundles with a reductive structure group G on a family X/S of smooth projective varieties in characteristic zero, it is known that the parameter scheme S has a set theoretic stratification by locally closed subsets which correspond to the Harder-Narasimhan types of the restriction of the principal bundle to the various fibers of X/S. We show that each of these subsets has in fact the structure of a locally closed subscheme of the parameter scheme S, with the following universal property: Under any base change, the pullback family admits a relative Harder-Narasimhan …
We revisit the Harder-Narasimhan stratification on a minuscule $p$-adic flag variety, by the theory of modifications of $G$-bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve. We compare the Harder-Narasimhan strata with the Newton strata introduced by Caraiani-Scholze. As a consequence, we get further equivalent conditions in terms of $p$-adic Hodge-Tate period domains for fully Hodge-Newton decomposable pairs. Moreover, we generalize these results to arbitrary cocharacters case by considering the associated $B_{dR}^+$-affine Schubert varieties. Applying Hodge-Tate period maps, our constructions give appl…
For every set of parabolic weights, we construct a Harder-Narasimhan stratification for the moduli stack of parabolic vector bundles on a curve. It is based on the notion of parabolic slope, introduced by Mehta and Seshadri. We also prove that the stratification is schematic, that each stratum is complete, and establish an analogue of Behrend's conjecture for parabolic vector bundles. A comparison with recent $Θ$-stratification approaches is discussed.
For a family of principal bundles with a reductive structure group on a family of curves in characteristic zero, it is known that the Harder Narasimhan type of its restriction to each fiber varies semicontinuously over the parameter scheme of the family. This defines a stratification of the parameter scheme by locally closed subsets, known as the Harder-Narasimhan stratification. In this note, we show how to endow each Harder-Narasimhan stratum with the structure of a locally closed subscheme of the parameter scheme, which enjoys the universal property that under any base change the pullback f…
The existence and uniqueness of H-N reduction for the Higgs principal bundles over nonsingular projective variety is shown. We also extend the notion of H-N reduction for (Γ, G)-bundles and ramified G-bundles over a smooth curve.
An unstable torsion free sheaf on a smooth projective variety gives a GIT unstable point in certain Quot scheme. To a GIT unstable point, Kempf associates a "maximally destabilizing" 1-parameter subgroup, and this induces a filtration of the torsion free sheaf. We show that this filtration coincides with the Harder-Narasimhan filtration.
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
We propose a generalization of Quillen's exact category -- arithmetic exact category and we discuss conditions on such categories under which one can establish the notion of Harder-Narasimhan filtrations and Harder-Narsimhan polygons. Furthermore, we show the functoriality of Harder-Narasimhan filtrations (indexed by $\mathbb R$), which can not be stated in the classical setting of Harder and Narasimhan's formalism.
We construct a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for rank $2$ tensors, where there does not exist any such notion a priori, as coming from a GIT notion of maximal unstability. The filtration associated to the 1-parameter subgroup of Kempf giving the maximal way to destabilize, in the GIT sense, a point in the parameter space of the construction of the moduli space of rank $2$ tensors over a smooth projective complex variety, does not depend on certain integer used in the construction of the moduli space, for large values of the integer. Hence, this filtration is unique and we define the Harder-Nara…
The notion of Harder-Narasimhan filtration was firstly introduced by Harder and Narasimhan in the setting of vector bundles on a non-singular projective curve. Curiously, analogous constructions have been discovered in other branches of mathematics which motivate categorical constructions of Harder-Narasimhan filtration. In this article, we introduce a categorical construction of Harder-Narasimhan filtration via slope function method which does not need the additive condition in degree function. We also give a method to prove the existence and uniqueness theorem of the Harder-Narasimhan filtra…
This Ph.D. thesis studies the relation between the Harder-Narasimhan filtration and a notion of GIT maximal unstability. When constructing a moduli space by using Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT), a notion of GIT stability appears, which is determined by 1-parameter subgroups. This thesis shows a correspondence between the 1-parameter subgroup giving maximal unstability from the GIT point of view and the Harder-Narasimhan filtration for different moduli problems: torsion free coherent sheaves, holomorphic pairs, Higgs sheaves, rank 2 tensors and quiver representations. The article [GSZ] contai…
We build on the recent techniques of Codogni and Patakfalvi, from \cite{Codogni:Patakfalvi:2021}, which were used to establish theorems about semi-positivity of the Chow Mumford line bundles for families of $\K$-semistable Fano varieties. Here we apply the Central Limit Theorem to ascertain the asymptotic probabilistic nature of the vertices of the \emph{Harder and Narasimhan polygons}. As an application of our main result, we use it to establish a filtered vector space analogue of the main technical result of \cite{Codogni:Patakfalvi:2021}. In doing so, we expand upon the slope stability theo…
Unstable holomorphic bundles can be described algebraically by Harder-Narasimhan filtrations. In this note we show how such filtrations correspond to the existence of special metrics defined by Hermitian-Einstein inequalities.
Let $X$ be an elliptic curve over an algebraically closed field. We prove that some exact sub-categories of the category of vector bundles over $X$, defined using Harder-Narasimhan filtrations, have the same K-groups as the whole category.
This paper deals with a question of Fontaine and Rapoport which was posed in math.NT/0204293. There they asked for the determination of the index set of the Harder-Narasimhan vectors of the filtered isocrystals with fixed Newton- and Hodge vector. The aim of this paper is to give an answer to their question.
Let E be a torsion-free sheaf on P2. We give an effective method which uses the Hilbert function of E to construct a weak version of the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of a torsion-free sheaf on P2 subject only to the condition that E be sufficiently general among sheaves with that Hilbert function. This algorithm uses on a generalization of Davis' decomposition lemma to higher rank.
We establish a Harder-Narasimhan formalism for modifications of $G$-bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve. The semi-stable stratum of the associated stratification of the $B_{dR}^+$-Grassmannian coincides with the variant of the weakly admissible locus defined by Viehmann, and its classical points agree with those of the basic Newton stratum. When restricted to minuscule affine Schubert cells, the stratification corresponds to the Harder-Narasimhan stratification of Dat, Orlik and Rapoport. We also study basic geometric properties of the strata, and the relation to the Hodge-Newton decompositi…
Let X be any smooth projective curve defined over a finite field. We show that the characteristic functions of any Harder-Narasimhan strata S_a of Bun_{GL_n}X belongs to the spherical Hall algebra H_X^{sph} of X. We give a geometric analog of the above result: the intersection cohomology sheaf IC(S_a) belongs to the category of simple Eisenstein sheaves over Bun_{GL_n}X.
We develop a Harder-Narasimhan theory for Kisin modules generalizing a similar theory for finite flat group schemes due to Fargues. We prove the tensor product theorem, i.e., that the tensor product of semi-stable objects is again semi-stable. We then apply the tensor product theorem to the study of Kisin varieties for arbitrary connected reductive groups.
Methods of Harder and Narasimhan from the theory of moduli of vector bundles are applied to moduli of quiver representations. Using the Hall algebra approach to quantum groups, an analog of the Harder-Narasimhan recursion is constructed inside the quantized enveloping algebra of a Kac-Moody algebra. This leads to a canonical orthogonal system, the HN system, in this algebra. Using a resolution of the recursion, an explicit formula for the HN system is given. As an application, explicit formulas for Betti numbers of the cohomology of quiver moduli are derived, generalizing several results on th…
We study a collection of stability conditions (in the sense of Schmitt) for complexes of sheaves over a smooth complex projective variety indexed by a positive rational parameter. We show that the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of a complex for small values of this parameter encodes the Harder-Narasimhan filtrations of the cohomology sheaves of this complex. Finally we relate a stratification into locally closed subschemes of a parameter space for complexes associated to these stability parameters with the stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types.
We prove that the Harder-Narasimhan filtration for an unstable finite dimensional representation of a finite quiver coincides with the filtration associated to the 1-parameter subgroup of Kempf, which gives maximal unstability in the sense of Geometric Invariant Theory for the corresponding point in the parameter space where these objects are parametrized in the construction of the moduli space.
This survey intends to present the basic notions of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) through its paradigmatic application in the construction of the moduli space of holomorphic vector bundles. Special attention is paid to the notion of stability from different points of view and to the concept of maximal unstability, represented by the Harder-Narasimhan filtration and, from which, correspondences with the GIT picture and results derived from stratifications on the moduli space are discussed.
Let $G$ be a split reductive group over a field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic, chosen suitably. Let $X\to S$ be a smooth projective morphism of locally noetherian $k$-schemes, with geometrically connected fibers. We show that for each Harder-Narasimhan type $τ$ for principal $G$-bundles, all pairs consisting of a principal $G$-bundle on a fiber of $X\to S$ together with a given canonical reduction of HN-type $τ$ form an algebraic stack $Bun_{X/S}^τ(G)$ over $S$. The forgetful $1$-morphism $Bun_{X/S}^τ(G) \to Bun_{X/S}(G)$ to the algebraic stack of all principal $G$-bundles on fibers of $X\to…
We use Drinfeld's relative compactifications and the Tannakian viewpoint on principal bundles to construct the Harder-Narasimhan stratification of the moduli stack Bun_G of G-bundles on an algebraic curve in arbitrary characteristic, generalizing the stratification for G=GL_n due to Harder and Narasimhan to the case of an arbitrary reductive group G. To establish the stratification on the set-theoretic level, we exploit a Tannakian interpretation of the Bruhat decomposition and give a new and purely geometric proof of the existence and uniqueness of the canonical reduction in arbitrary charact…
Inspired by Katz-Mazur theorem on crystalline cohomology and by Eskin-Kontsevich-Zorich's numerical experiments, we conjecture that the polygon of Lyapunov spectrum lies above (or on) the Harder-Narasimhan polygon of the Hodge bundle over any Teichmüller curve. We also discuss the connections between the two polygons and the integral of eigenvalues of the curvature of the Hodge bundle by using Atiyah-Bott, Forni and Möller's works. We obtain several applications to Teichmüller dynamics conditional to the conjecture.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, and $V$ be a vector bundle over $X$. It is well known that if $X$ is a curve and $V$ is not strongly semistable, then some Frobenius pullback $(F^t)^*V$ is a direct sum of strongly semistable bundles. A natural question to ask is whether this still holds in higher dimension. Indranil Biswas, Yogish I. Holla, A.J. Parameswaran, and S. Subramanian showed that there is always a counterexample to this over any algebraically closed field of positive characteristic which is uncountable. However, we will produce …
We give a generalisation of the theory of optimal destabilizing 1-parameter subgroups to non-algebraic complex geometry. Consider a holomorphic action $G\times F\to F$ of a complex reductive Lie group $G$ on a finite dimensional (possibly non-compact) Kähler manifold $F$. Using a Hilbert type criterion for the (semi)stability of symplectic actions, we associate to any non semistable point $f\in F$ a unique optimal destabilizing vector in $\g$ and then a naturally defined point $f_0$ which is semistable for the action of a certain reductive subgroup of $G$ on a submanifold of $F$. We get a natu…
We study the relationship between two stratifications on parameter spaces for coherent sheaves and for quiver representations: a stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types and a stratification arising from the geometric invariant theory construction of the associated moduli spaces of semistable objects. For quiver representations, both stratifications coincide, but this is not quite true for sheaves. We explain why the stratifications on various Quot schemes do not coincide and see that the correct parameter space to compare such stratifications is the stack of coherent sheaves. Then we relate …
Suppose that $X$ is a smooth projective variety and that $C$ is a general member of a family of free rational curves on $X$. We prove several statements showing that the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $T_{X}|_{C}$ is approximately the same as the restriction of the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $T_{X}$ with respect to the class of $C$. When $X$ is a Fano variety, we prove that the set of all restricted tangent bundles for general free rational curves is controlled by a finite set of data. We then apply our work to analyze Peyre's "freeness" formulation of Manin's Conjecture in the setting o…
In this text we develop some aspects of Harder-Narasimhan theory, slopes, semistability and canonical filtration, in the setting of combinatorial lattices. Of noticeable importance is the Harder-Narasimhan structure associated to a Galois connection between two lattices. It applies, in particular, to matroids. We then specialize this to linear codes. This could be done from at least three different approaches: using the sphere-packing analogy, or the geometric view, or the Galois connection construction just introduced. A remarkable fact is that these all lead to the same notion of semistabili…
A well known result of Miyaoka asserts that a complex projective manifold is uniruled if its cotangent bundle restricted to a general complete intersection curve is not nef. Using the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the tangent bundle, it can moreover be shown that the choice of such a curve gives rise to a rationally connected foliation of the manifold. In this note we show that, conversely, a movable curve can be found so that the maximal rationally connected fibration of the manifold may be recovered as a term of the associated Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the tangent bundle.
Let $\Bbbk$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let $\mathrm{Sch}/\Bbbk$ denote the category of schemes of finite type over $\Bbbk$. Let $B$ be a connected projective scheme over $\Bbbk$ and let $\mathcal L$ be an ample line bundle on $B$. Let $τ$ be a Harder-Narasimhan type of length 2, and let $δ\in\mathbb N$. We say a pure sheaf $\mathcal E$ on $B$ is $(τ,δ)$-stable if its Harder-Narasimhan filtration $0=\mathcal E_{\leq 0}\subsetneq\mathcal E_{\leq 1}\subsetneq\mathcal E_{\leq 2}=\mathcal E$ is non-splitting, of type $τ$, with stable subquotients, and $δ=\dim_\Bbbk\mat…
Motivated by constructing moduli spaces of unstable objects, we use new ideas in non-reductive GIT to construct quotients by parabolic group actions. For moduli problems with semistable moduli spaces constructed by reductive GIT, we consider associated instability (or HKKN) stratifications, which are often closed related to Harder-Narasimhan stratifications, and construct quotients of the unstable strata under various stabiliser assumptions by further developing ideas of non-reductive GIT. Our approach is to construct parabolic quotients in stages, in order for the required stabiliser assumpti…
Starting from our work on Harder-Narasimhan filtrations of finite flat group schemes over a $p$-adic field, we developp a theory of Harder-Narasimhan filtrations for $p$-divisible groups. We apply this to the study of the geometry of period morphisms for Rapoport-Zink spaces and to the $p$-adic geometry of Shimura varieties. We define and study in particular some fundamental domains for the action of Hecke correspondences.
We extend previous results on boundedness of sets of coherent sheaves on a compact Kähler manifold to the relative and not necessarily smooth case. This enlarged context allows us to prove properness properties of the relative Douady space as well as results related to semistability of sheaves such as the existence of relative Harder-Narasimhan filtrations.
