In this paper, we prove the first incidence bound for points and conics over prime fields. As applications, we prove new results on expansion of bivariate polynomial images and on certain variations of distinct distances problems. These include new lower bounds on the number of pinned algebraic distances as well as improvements of results of Koh and Sun (2014) and Shparlinski (2006) on the size of the distance set formed by two large subsets of finite dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. We also prove a variant of Beck's theorem for conics.
Let $\A$ be the incidence matrix of lines and points of the classical projective plane $PG(2,q)$ with $q$ odd. With respect to a conic in $PG(2,q)$, the matrix $\A$ is partitioned into 9 submatrices. The rank of each of these submatices over $\Ff_q$, the defining field of $PG(2,q)$, is determined.
We develop the methods used by Rudnev and Wheeler to prove an incidence theorem between arbitrary sets of Möbius transformations and point sets in $\mathbb F_p^2$. We also note some asymmetric incidence results, and give applications of these results to various problems in additive combinatorics and discrete geometry.
We derive a general upper bound for the number of incidences with $k$-dimensional varieties in ${\mathbb R}^d$. The leading term of this new bound generalizes previous bounds for the special cases of $k=1, k=d-1,$ and $k= d/2$, to every $1\le k <d$. We derive lower bounds showing that this leading term is tight in various cases. We derive a bound for incidences with transverse varieties, generalizing a result of Solymosi and Tao. Finally, we derive a bound for incidences with hyperplanes in ${\mathbb C}^d$, which is also tight in some cases. (In both ${\mathbb R}^d$ and ${\mathbb C}^d$, the bo…
Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a conic in the classical projective plane $PG(2,q)$, where $q$ is an odd prime power. With respect to $\mathcal{O}$, the lines of $PG(2,q)$ are classified as passant, tangent, and secant lines, and the points of $PG(2,q)$ are classified as internal, absolute and external points. The incidence matrices between the secant/passant lines and the external/internal points were used in \cite{keith1} to produce several classes of structured low-density parity-check binary codes. In particular, the authors of \cite{keith1} gave conjectured dimension formula for the binary code $\ma…
We prove bounds on the number of incidences between a set of algebraic curves in $\mathbb{C}^2$ and a Cartesian product $A\times B$ with finite sets $A,B\subset \mathbb{C}$. Similar bounds are known under various conditions, but we show that the Cartesian product assumption leads to a simpler proof. This assumption holds in a number of interesting applications, and with our bound these applications can be extended from $\mathbb{R}$ to $\mathbb{C}$. The proof is a new application of the polynomial partitioning technique introduced by Guth and Katz.
We prove new bounds on the number of incidences between points and higher degree algebraic curves. The key ingredient is an improved initial bound, which is valid for all fields. Then we apply the polynomial method to obtain global bounds on $\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{C}$.
Let A be the incidence matrix of passant lines and internal points with respect to a conic in PG(2, q), where q is an odd prime power. In this article, we study both geometric and algebraic properties of the column null space L of A over the finite field of 2 elements. In particular, using methods from both finite geometry and modular presentation theory, we manage to compute the dimension of L, which provides a proof for the conjecture on the dimension of the binary code generated by L.
Let $P = A\times A \subset \mathbb{F}_p \times \mathbb{F}_p$, $p$ a prime. Assume that $P= A\times A$ has $n$ elements, $n<p$. See $P$ as a set of points in the plane over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We show that the pairs of points in $P$ determine $\geq c n^{1 + {1/267}}$ lines, where $c$ is an absolute constant. We derive from this an incidence theorem: the number of incidences between a set of $n$ points and a set of $n$ lines in the projective plane over $\F_p$ ($n<\sqrt{p}$) is bounded by $C n^{{3/2}-{1/10678}}$, where $C$ is an absolute constant.
Let $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be a finite field of order $q=p^k$ where $p$ is prime. Let $P$ and $L$ be sets of points and lines respectively in $\mathbb{F}_{q} \times \mathbb{F}_{q}$ with $|P|=|L|=n$. We establish the incidence bound $I(P,L) \leq γn^{3/2 - 1/12838}$, where $γ$ is an absolute constant, so long as $P$ satisfies the conditions of being an `antifield'. We define this to mean that the projection of $P$ onto some coordinate axis has no more than half-dimensional interaction with large subfields of $\mathbb{F}_q$. In addition, we give examples of sets satisfying these conditions in the impor…
We prove a lower bound on the number of ordinary conics determined by a finite point set in $\mathbb{R}^2$. An ordinary conic for a subset $S$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$ is a conic that is determined by five points of $S$, and contains no other points of $S$. Wiseman and Wilson proved the Sylvester-Gallai-type statement that if a finite point set is not contained in a conic, then it determines at least one ordinary conic. We give a simpler proof of their result and then combine it with a result of Green and Tao to prove our main result: If $S$ is not contained in a conic and has at most $c|S|$ points o…
We present a technique for deriving lower bounds for incidences with hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with $d\ge 4$. These bounds apply to a large variety of hypersurfaces, such as hyperplanes, hyperspheres, paraboloids, and hypersurfaces of any degree. Beyond being the first non-trivial lower bounds for various incidence problems, our bounds show that some of the known upper bounds for incidence problems in ${\mathbb R}^d$ are tight up to an extra $\varepsilon$ in the exponent. Specifically, for every $m$, $d\ge 4$, and $\varepsilon>0$ there exist $m$ points and $n$ hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb…
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, let $P \subseteq \mathbb{F}^d$ be a finite set of points, and let $α,β\in \mathbb{F} \setminus \{0\}$. We study the quantity \[|Π_{α, β}| = \{(p,q,r) \in P \times P \times P \mid p \cdot q = α, p \cdot r = β\}.\] We observe a connection between the question of placing an upper bound on $|Π_{α,β}|$ and a well-studied question on the number of incidences betwen points and hyperplanes, and use this connection to prove new and strengthened upper bounds on $|Π_{α,β}|$ in a variety of settings.
We prove a new upper bound for the number of incidences between points and lines in a plane over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$, a problem first considered by Bourgain, Katz and Tao. Specifically, we show that $m$ points and $n$ lines in $\mathbb{F}^2$, with $m^{7/8}<n<m^{8/7}$, determine at most $O(m^{11/15}n^{11/15})$ incidences (where, if $\mathbb{F}$ has positive characteristic $p$, we assume $m^{-2}n^{13}\ll p^{15}$). This improves on the previous best known bound, due to Jones. To obtain our bound, we first prove an optimal point-line incidence bound on Cartesian products, using a reduc…
Let $E \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^2$ be a set in the 2-dimensional vector space over a finite field with $q$ elements. We prove an identity for the second moment of its incidence function and deduce a variety of existing results from the literature, not all naturally associated with lines in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$, in a unified and elementary way.
We prove an incidence theorem for points and curves in the complex plane. Given a set of $m$ points in ${\mathbb R}^2$ and a set of $n$ curves with $k$ degrees of freedom, Pach and Sharir proved that the number of point-curve incidences is $O\big(m^{\frac{k}{2k-1}}n^{\frac{2k-2}{2k-1}}+m+n\big)$. We establish the slightly weaker bound $O_\varepsilon\big(m^{\frac{k}{2k-1}+\varepsilon}n^{\frac{2k-2}{2k-1}}+m+n\big)$ on the number of incidences between $m$ points and $n$ (complex) algebraic curves in ${\mathbb C}^2$ with $k$ degrees of freedom. We combine tools from algebraic geometry and differe…
We prove an incidence theorem for points and planes in the projective space $\mathbb P^3$ over any field $\mathbb F$, whose characteristic $p\neq 2.$ An incidence is viewed as an intersection along a line of a pair of two-planes from two canonical rulings of the Klein quadric. The Klein quadric can be traversed by a generic hyperplane, yielding a line-line incidence problem in a three-quadric, the Klein image of a regular line complex. This hyperplane can be chosen so that at most two lines meet. Hence, one can apply an algebraic theorem of Guth and Katz, with a constraint involving $p$ if $p>…
Given positive integers $k\leq d$ and a finite field $\mathbb{F}$, a set $S\subset\mathbb{F}^{d}$ is $(k,c)$-subspace evasive if every $k$-dimensional affine subspace contains at most $c$ elements of $S$. By a simple averaging argument, the maximum size of a $(k,c)$-subspace evasive set is at most $c |\mathbb{F}|^{d-k}$. When $k$ and $d$ are fixed, and $c$ is sufficiently large, the matching lower bound $Ω(|\mathbb{F}|^{d-k})$ is proved by Dvir and Lovett. We provide an alternative proof of this result using the random algebraic method. We also prove sharp upper bounds on the size of $(k,c)$-e…
We use elementary methods to prove an incidence theorem for points and spheres in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. As an application, we show that any point set of $P\subset \mathbb{F}_q^2$ with $|P|\geq 5q$ determines a positive proportion of all circles. The latter result is an analogue of Beck's Theorem for circles which is optimal up to multiplicative constants.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of $q$ elements where $q$ is a large odd prime power and $Q =a_1 x_1^{c_1}+...+a_dx_d^{c_d}\in \mathbb{F}_q[x_1,...,x_d]$, where $2\le c_i\le N$, $\gcd(c_i,q)=1$, and $a_i\in \mathbb{F}_q$ for all $1\le i\le d$. A $Q$-sphere is a set of the form $\lbrace x\in \mathbb{F}_q^d | Q(x-b)=r\rbrace$, where $b\in \mathbb{F}_q^d, r\in \mathbb{F}_q$. We prove bounds on the number of incidences between a point set $\mathcal{P}$ and a $Q$-sphere set $\mathcal{S}$, denoted by $I(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{S})$, as the following. $$| I(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{S})-\frac{|\mathcal{…
A point $x \in \mathbb{F}^n$ is a joint formed by a finite collection $\mathfrak{L}$ of lines in $\mathbb{F}^n$ if there exist at least $n$ lines in $\mathfrak{L}$ through $x$ that span $\mathbb{F}^n$. It is known that there are $\lesssim_n |\mathfrak{L}|^{\frac{n}{n-1}}$ joints formed by $\mathfrak{L}$. We say that a point $x \in \mathbb{F}^n$ is a multijoint formed by the finite collections $\mathfrak{L}_1,\ldots,\mathfrak{L}_n$ of lines in $\mathbb{F}^n$ if there exist at least $n$ lines through $x$, one from each collection, spanning $\mathbb{F}^n$. We show that there are $\lesssim_n (|\ma…
We study the $δ$-discretized Szemerédi-Trotter theorem and Furstenberg set problem. We prove sharp estimates for both two problems assuming tubes satisfy some spacing condition. For both two problems, we construct sharp examples that have many common features.
A regular linear line complex is a three-parameter set of lines in space, whose Plücker vectors lie in a hyperplane, which is not tangent to the Klein quadric. Our main result is a bound $O(n^{1/2}m^{3/4} + m+n)$ for the number of incidences between $n$ lines in a complex and $m$ points in $\mathbb F^3$, where $\mathbb F$ is a field, and $n\leq char(\mathbb F)^{4/3}$ in positive characteristic. Zahl has recently observed that bichromatic pairwise incidences of lines coming from two distinct line complexes account for the nonzero single distance problem for a set of $n$ points in $\mathbb F^3$.…
Given $m$ points and $n$ hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, if there are many incidences, we expect to find a big cluster $K_{r,s}$ in their incidence graph. Apfelbaum and Sharir found lower and upper bounds for the largest size of $rs$, which only match in three dimensions. In this paper we close the gap in four and five dimensions, up to some logarithmic factors.
In this paper, we prove a new point-sphere incidence bound in vector spaces over finite fields. More precisely, let $P$ be a set of points and $S$ be a set of spheres in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$. Suppose that $|P|, |S|\le N$, we prove that the number of incidences between $P$ and $S$ satisfies \[I(P, S)\le N^2q^{-1}+q^{\frac{d-1}{2}}N,\] under some conditions on $d, q$, and radii. This improves the known upper bound $N^2q^{-1}+q^{\frac{d}{2}}N$ in the literature. As an application, we show that for $A\subset \mathbb{F}_q$ with $q^{1/2}\ll |A|\ll q^{\frac{d^2+1}{2d^2}}$, one has \[\max \left\lbrace |A+…
Let $q$ be a power of a prime and $\mathbb{F}_q$ the finite field consisting of $q$ elements. We prove explicit upper bounds on the number of incidences between lines and Cartesian products in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$. We also use our results on point-line incidences to give new sum-product type estimates concerning sums of reciprocals.
Let $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be a finite field of order $q$, where $q$ is an odd prime power. A quadratic subspace $(W,Q)$ of $(\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n},x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+\cdots+x_{n}^{2})$ is called dot$_{k}$-subspace if $Q$ is isometrically isomorphic to $x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+\cdots+x_{k}^{2}$. In this paper, we obtain bounds for the number of incidences $I(\mathcal{K},\mathcal{H})$ between a collection $\mathcal{K}$ of dot$_{k}$-subspaces and a collection $\mathcal{H}$ of dot$_{h}$-subspaces when $h \geq 4k-4$, which is given by \[\left | I(\mathcal{K},\mathcal{H})-\frac{|\mathcal{K}||\mathcal{H}|}{q^{k…
It is shown that the number of distinct types of three-point hinges, defined by a real plane set of $n$ points is $\gg n^2\log^{-3} n$, where a hinge is identified by fixing two pair-wise distances in a point triple. This is achieved via strengthening (modulo a $\log n$ factor) of the Guth-Katz estimate for the number of pair-wise intersections of lines in $\mathbb R^3$, arising in the context of the plane Erd\H os distinct distance problem, to a second moment incidence estimate. This relies, in particular, on the generalisation of the Guth-Katz incidence bound by Solomon and Sharir.
We use methods from spectral graph theory to obtain bounds on the number of incidences between $k$-planes and $h$-planes in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$ which generalize a recent result given by Bennett, Iosevich, and Pakianathan (2014). More precisely, we prove that the number of incidences between a set $\mathcal{P}$ of $k$-planes and a set $\mathcal{H}$ of $h$-planes with $h\ge 2k+1$, which is denoted by $I(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{H})$, satisfies \[\left\vert I(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{H})-\frac{|\mathcal{P}||\mathcal{H}|}{q^{(d-h)(k+1)}}\right\vert \lesssim q^{\frac{(d-h)h+k(2h-d-k+1)}{2}}\sqrt{|\mathcal{P}|…
It is shown that $n$ points and $e$ lines in the complex Euclidean plane ${\mathbb C}^2$ determine $O(n^{2/3}e^{2/3}+n+e)$ point-line incidences. This bound is the best possible, and it generalizes the celebrated theorem by Szemerédi and Trotter about point-line incidences in the real Euclidean plane ${\mathbb R}^2$.
Let $\mathcal{V}=\bigsqcup_{i=0}^n\mathcal{V}_i$ be the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the graded Gorenstein algebra defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has $\mathcal{V}$ as a $\mathbb{Q}$ basis. Let $F$ be the Macaulay dual generator for $\mathcal{A}$. We compute explicitly the Hessian determinant $|\frac{\partial ^2F}{\partial X_i \partial X_j}|$ evaluated at the point $X_1 = X_2 = \cdots = X_N=1$ and relate it to the determinant of the incidence matrix between $\mathcal{V}_1$ and $\mathcal{V}_{n-1}$. Our exp…
We study a wide spectrum of incidence problems involving points and curves or points and surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$. The current (and in fact the only viable) approach to such problems, pioneered by Guth and Katz [2010,2015], requires a variety of tools from algebraic geometry, most notably (i) the polynomial partitioning technique, and (ii) the study of algebraic surfaces that are ruled by lines or, in more recent studies [Guth-Zahl 2016], by algebraic curves of some constant degree. By exploiting and refining these tools, we obtain new and improved bounds for numerous incidence problems in $\…
We show that $m$ points and $n$ smooth algebraic surfaces of bounded degree in $\mathbb{R}^3$ satisfying suitable nondegeneracy conditions can have at most $O(m^{\frac{2k}{3k-1}}n^{\frac{3k-3}{3k-1}}+m+n)$ incidences, provided that any collection of $k$ points have at most O(1) surfaces passing through all of them, for some $k\geq 3$. In the case where the surfaces are spheres and no three spheres meet in a common circle, this implies there are $O((mn)^{3/4} + m +n)$ point-sphere incidences. This is a slight improvement over the previous bound of $O((mn)^{3/4} β(m,n)+ m +n)$ for $β(m,n)$ an (e…

We continue our study and classification of structures on the Fano plane ${\cal F}$ and its dual ${\cal F}^\ast$ involved in the construction of octonions and the Lie algebra $\mathfrak g_2 (\mathbb F)$ over a field $\mathbb F$. These are a "composition factor": ${\cal F}\times {\cal F} \to\{-1, 1\}$, inducing an octonion multiplication, and a function $δ^\ast : Aut({\cal F}) \times {\cal F}^\ast \to \{-1, 1\}$ such that $g \in Aut({\cal F})$ can be lifted to an automorphism of the octonions iff $δ^\ast(g, \cdot)$ is the Radon transform of a function on ${\cal F}$. We lift the action of $Aut({…
