Deep learning (DL) architectures have been successfully used in many applications including wireless systems. However, they have been shown to be susceptible to adversarial attacks. We analyze DL-based models for a regression problem in the context of downlink power allocation in massive multiple-input-multiple-output systems and propose universal adversarial perturbation (UAP)-crafting methods as white-box and black-box attacks. We benchmark the UAP performance of white-box and black-box attacks for the considered application and show that the adversarial success rate can achieve up to 60% and 40%, respectively. The proposed UAP-based attacks make a more practical and realistic approach as compared to classical white-box attacks.
Deep learning (DL) is becoming popular as a new tool for many applications in wireless communication systems. However, for many classification tasks (e.g., modulation classification) it has been shown that DL-based wireless systems are susceptible to adversarial examples; adversarial examples are well-crafted malicious inputs to the neural network (NN) with the objective to cause erroneous outputs. In this paper, we extend this to regression problems and show that adversarial attacks can break DL-based power allocation in the downlink of a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (maMIMO) networ…
In distributed multiple-input multiple-output (D-MIMO) networks, power control is crucial to optimize the spectral efficiencies of users and max-min fairness (MMF) power control is a commonly used strategy as it satisfies uniform quality-of-service to all users. The optimal solution of MMF power control requires high complexity operations and hence deep neural network based artificial intelligence (AI) solutions are proposed to decrease the complexity. Although quite accurate models can be achieved by using AI, these models have some intrinsic vulnerabilities against adversarial attacks where …

This article addresses the fundamental problem of selecting the optimal hardware quality in the Massive MIMO space. In particular, we examine the optimal HWI and ADC bit allocation per BS antenna to maximize the SE. The result…

This work advocates the use of deep learning to perform max-min and max-prod power allocation in the downlink of Massive MIMO networks. More precisely, a deep neural network is trained to learn the map between the positions of user equipments (UEs) and the optimal power allocation policies, and then used to predict the power allocation profiles for a new set of UEs' positions. The use of deep learning significantly improves the complexity-performance trade-off of power allocation, compared to traditional optimization-oriented methods. Particularly, the proposed approach does not require the co…
Large-scale MIMO systems have been considered as one of the possible candidates for the next-generation wireless communication technique, due to their potential to provide significant higher throughput than conventional wireless systems. For such systems, Zero-Forcing (ZF) and Conjugate Beamforming (CB) precoding have been considered as two possible practical spatial multiplexing techniques, and their average achievable sum rates have been derived on the sum power constraint. However, in practice, the transmitting power at a base station is constrained under each antenna. In this case, the opt…
In this paper, energy efficient power allocation for the uplink of a multi-cell massive MIMO system is investigated. We propose an offline solution containing the value iteration and Q-learning algorithms, which can obtain the global optimum power allocation policy. Simulation results show th…
In this paper, we design a resource allocation framework for the delay-sensitive Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) broadcast system with limited feedback. Considering the scarcity and interrelation of the transmit power and feedback bandwidth, it is imperative to optimize the two resources in a joint and efficient manner while meeting the delay-QoS requirement. Based on the effective bandwidth theory, we first obtain a closed-form expression of average violation probability with respect to a given delay requirement as a function of transmit power and codebook size of feedback channel. By minimizing th…
Rate splitting (RS) systems can better deal with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) than conventional approaches. However, this requires an appropriate power allocation that often has a high computational complexity, which might be inadequate for practical and large systems. To this end, adaptive power allocation techniques can provide good performance with low computational cost. This work presents novel robust and adaptive power allocation technique for RS-based multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. In particular, we develop a robust adaptive …

The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power allocation for the relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity. We reveal the condition that the secrecy outage ca…
In this letter, we investigate the energy efficiency (EE) problem in a millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO (mMIMO) system with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Multiple two-user clusters are formulated according to their channel correlation and gain difference. Following this, we propose a hybrid analog/digital precoding scheme for the low radio frequency (RF) chains structure at the base station (BS). On this basis, we formulate a power allocation problem aiming to maximize the EE under users' quality of service (QoS) requirements and per-cluster power constraint. An iterative algorit…
In this paper, we consider the problem of power allocation in MIMO wiretap channel for secrecy in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. Perfect knowledge of the destination channel state information (CSI) and only the statistical knowledge of the eavesdroppers CSI are assumed. We first consider the MIMO wiretap channel with Gaussian input. Using Jensen's inequality, we transform the secrecy rate max-min optimization problem to a single maximization problem. We use generalized singular value decomposition and transform the problem to a concave maximization problem which maximizes the sum secr…

We propose a max-min multi-cell aware regularized zero-forcing (Max-Min MCA-RZF) precoding and power allocation scheme for downlink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. A general correlated channel model is considered, and the adopted channel state information (CSI) acquisition model includes the effects of estimation errors and pilot contamination. We use results from random matrix theory to derive deterministic equivalents for the proposed Max-Min power allocation in the large system limit which solely depend on statistical CSI, but not on individual channel real…
In this paper, we consider a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication system between a base station equipped with multiple antennas and multiple mobile users each equipped with a single antenna. The uplink scenario is considered. The uplink channels are acquired by the base station through a training phase. Two linear processing schemes are considered, namely maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF). We optimize the training period and optimal training energy under the average and peak power constraint so that an achievable sum rate is maximized.
This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian wiretap channel model, where there exists a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, each equipped with multiple antennas. Perfect secrecy is achieved when the transmitter and the legitimate receiver can communicate at some positive rate, while ensuring that the eavesdropper gets zero bits of information. In this paper, the perfect secrecy capacity of the multiple antenna MIMO wiretap channel is found for aribtrary numbers of antennas under the assumption that the transmitter performs beamforming based on the …
A massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, which utilizes a large number of base station (BS) antennas to serve a set of users, suffers from pilot contamination due to the inter-cell interference (ICI). In this letter, a graph coloring based pilot allocation (GC-PA) scheme is proposed to mitigate pilot contamination for multi-cell massive MIMO systems. Specifically, by exploiting the large-scale characteristics of fading channels, an interference graph is firstly constructed to describe the potential ICI relationship of all users. Then, with the limited pilot resource, the propose…
Massive MIMO is seen as a main enabler for low latency communications, thanks to its high spatial degrees of freedom. The channel hardening and favorable propagation properties of Massive MIMO are particularly important for multiplexing several URLLC devices. However, the actual utility of channel hardening and spatial multiplexing is dependent critically on the accuracy of channel knowledge. When several low latency devices are multiplexed, the cost for acquiring accurate knowledge becomes critical, and it is not evident how many devices can be served with a latency-reliability requirement an…
We propose a location-aware pilot allocation algorithm for a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network with high-mobility users, where the wireless channels are subject to Rician fading. Pilot allocation in massive MIMO is a hard combinatorial problem and depends on the locations of users. As such, it is highly complex to achieve the optimal pilot allocation in real-time for a network with high-mobility users. Against this background, we propose a low-complexity pilot allocation algorithm, which exploits the behavior of line-of-sight (LOS) interference among the users and allocate …
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars offer higher resolution, better target detection, and more accurate target parameter estimation. Due to the sparsity of the targets in space-velocity domain, we can exploit Compressive Sensing (CS) to improve the performance of MIMO radars when the sampling rate is much less than the Nyquist rate. In distributed MIMO radars, block CS methods can be used instead of classical CS ones for more performance improvement, because the received signal in this group of MIMO radars is a block sparse signal in a basis. In this paper, two new methods are propose…
Cell-free Massive MIMO systems consist of a large number of geographically distributed access points (APs) that serve users by coherent joint transmission. Downlink power allocation is important in these systems, to determine which APs should transmit to which users and with what power. If the system is implemented correctly, it can deliver a more uniform user performance than conventional cellular networks. To this end, previous works have shown how to perform system-wide max-min fairness power allocation when using maximum ratio precoding. In this paper, we first generalize this method to ar…
We investigate the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) in downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular systems, where the total number of receive antennas at user equipment (UE) ends in a cell is more than the number of transmit antennas at the base station (BS). We first dynamically group the UE receive antennas into a number of clusters equal to or more than the number of BS transmit antennas. A single beamforming vector is then shared by all the receive antennas in a cluster. We propose a linear beamformin…

We investigate the optimal power allocation and optimal precoding for a cluster of two BSs which cooperate to jointly maximize the achievable rate for two users connecting to each BS in a MCP framework. This framework is modeled by a virtual network MIMO channel due to the framework of full cooperation. In particular, due to sharing the CSI and data between the two BSs over the backhaul link. We provide a generalized fixed point equation of the optimal precoder in the asymptotic regimes of the low- and high-snr. In this paper, we investigate the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We propose a novel user-assisted (UA) simultaneous diagonalization (SD) based MIMO-NOMA scheme that achieves SD of the MIMO channels of both users through a combination of precoder design and low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users, thereby considerably lowering the overall decoding complexity compared to joint decoding. The achievable ergodic user rates of the proposed scheme are analyzed for Rayleigh fading channe…
This paper investigates the downlink of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that include a single cell Base Station (BS) equipped with large number of antennas serving multiple users. As the number of RF chains is getting large, the system model considered in this paper assumes a non negligible circuit power consumption. Hence, the aim of this work is to find the optimal balance between the power consumed by the RF chains and the transmitted power. First, assuming an equal power allocation among users, the optimal number of RF chains to be activated is analytically found. The…

In this paper, we consider the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. The proposed precoding scheme is based on simultaneous triangularization and decomposes the MIMO-NOMA channels of the two users into multiple single-input single-output NOMA channels, assuming low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users. In contrast to the precoding schemes based on simultaneous diagonalization (SD), the proposed scheme avoids inverting the MIMO channels of the users, thereby enhancing the ergodic …

In a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) setup, where one side of the link comprises a linear antenna array, data can be transmitted over the direction of incident rays. Channel capacity for this setup is studied in this paper. We define two different setups; one when the energy is constant and equal over all rays, and one when available energy is evenly distributed over rays. For the latter, we show that there is an upper bound for channel capacity, regardless of the number of rays and antennas. Also, we have compared this setup with the legacy single-input single-output (SISO) AWGN channel.
In this paper, we consider the problem of joint user scheduling and dynamic pilot allocation in a Time-Division Duplex (TDD) based Massive MIMO network under varying traffic condition. One of the main problems with Massive MIMO systems is that the number of available orthogonal pilot signals is limited, and the dynamic allocation of these signals to different users is crucially needed to utilize the full benefit of these systems. In addition, pilot signals are radio resource control (RRC) configured in practice, and hence the frequent reconfiguration causes high signaling overhead and is costl…

Remarkable research activities and major advances have been occurred over the past decade in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. Several transmission technologies and precoding techniques have been developed in order to exploit the spatial dimension so that simultaneous transmission of independent data streams reuse the same radio resources. The achievable performance of such techniques heavily depends on the channel characteristics of the selected users, the amount of channel knowledge, and how efficiently interference is mitigated. In systems where the total number of…

The focus of this work is on the optimization of the allocation of the CSI feedback subject to a constraint on the total sharing through the backhaul network. Building upon the Wyner model, we derive a new approach to allocate the CSI feedback while making effici…

In this paper, energy efficient power allocation for downlink massive MIMO systems is investigated. A constrained non-convex optimization problem is formulated to maximize the energy efficiency (EE), which takes into account the quality of service (QoS) requirements. By exploiting the properties of fractional programming and the lower bound of the user data rate, the non-convex optimization problem is transformed into a convex optimization problem. The Lagrangian dual function method is utilized to convert the constrained convex problem into an unconstrained convex one. Due to the multi-variab…
In this paper, we derive a closed-form expression for the combiner of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) receiver equipped with a minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) estimator. We propose using variable-bit-resolution analog-to- digital converters (ADC) across radio frequency (RF) paths. The combiner designed is a function of the quantization errors across each RF path. Using very low bit resolution ADCs (1-2bits) is a popular approach with massive MIMO receiver architectures to mitigate large power demands. We show that for certain channel conditions, adopting unequal bit resolution ADCs (e…
Tradeoff in diversity, multiplexing, and delay in multihop MIMO relay networks with ARQ is studied, where the random delay is caused by queueing and ARQ retransmission. This leads to an optimal ARQ allocation problem with per-hop delay or end-to-end delay constraint. The optimal ARQ allocation has to trade off between the ARQ error that the receiver fails to decode in the allocated maximum ARQ rounds and the packet loss due to queueing delay. These two probability of errors are characterized using the diversity-multiplexing-delay tradeoff (DMDT) (without queueing) and the tail probability of r…
