In this paper, the performance of an underlay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio system is analytically studied. In particular, the secondary transmitter operates in a spatial multiplexing transmission mode, while a zero-forcing (ZF) detector is employed at the secondary receiver. Additionally, the secondary system is interfered by multiple randomly distributed single-antenna primary users (PUs). To enhance the performance of secondary transmission, optimal power allocation is performed at the secondary transmitter with a constraint on the interference temperature (IT) specified by the PUs. The outage probability of the secondary receiver is explicitly derived in an exact closed-form expression. Also, some special cases of practical interest, including co-located PUs and massive MIMO, are discussed. Further, to mitigate instantaneous excessive interference onto PUs caused by the time-average IT, an iterative antenna reduction algorithm is developed for the secondary transmitter and, accordingly, the average number of transmit antennas is analytically computed. Extensive numerical and simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of our analysis.
Today, MIMO has become an indispensable scheme for providing significant spectral efficiency in wireless communication and for future wireless system, recently, it goes to two extremes: massive MIMO and single-RF MIMO. This paper, which is put in the latter, utilizes load-modulated arrays with only reactance loads for single-RF transmission of spatially multiplexed QAM signals. To alleviate the need for iterative processes while considering mutual coupling in the compact antenna, we present a novel design methodology for the loading network, which enables the exact computation of the three rea…
In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) spatially multiplexing (SM) systems, achievable error rate performance is determined by signal detection strategy. The optimal maximum-likelihood detection (MLD) that exhaustively examines all symbol candidates has exponential complexity and may not be applicable in many practical systems. In this paper, we consider a generalized minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection derived from conditional mean estimation, which in principle behaves equivalently to MLD but also includes a linear MMSE detection as a special case. Motivated by this fact, we propose…
Future cellular networks are expected to support new communication paradigms such as machine-type communication (MTC) services along with conventional human-type communication (HTC) services. This requires base stations to serve a large number of devices in relatively short channel coherence intervals, which renders allocation of orthogonal pilot sequences per-device in each cell impractical. Furthermore, the stringent power constraints, place-and-play type connectivity and various data rate requirements of MTC devices make it impossible for the traditional cellular architecture to accommodate…
Recent works on MIMO interference channels have shown that interference alignment can significantly increase the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) of the network. However, most of these works have assumed a fully connected interference graph. In this paper, we investigate how the partial connectivity can be exploited to enhance system performance in MIMO interference networks. We propose a novel interference mitigation scheme which introduces constraints for the signal subspaces of the precoders and decorrelators to mitigate "many" interference nulling constraints at a cost of "little" freed…
This paper compares two important downlink multicell interference mitigation techniques, namely, large-scale (LS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and network MIMO. We consider a cooperative wireless cellular system operating in time-division duplex (TDD) mode, wherein each cooperating cluster includes $B$ base-stations (BSs), each equipped with multiple antennas and scheduling $K$ single-antenna users. In an LS-MIMO system, each BS employs $BM$ antennas not only to serve its scheduled users, but also to null out interference caused to the other users within the cooperating cluster using …
This work encompasses Rate-Splitting (RS), providing significant benefits in multi-user settings in the context of huge degrees of freedom promised by massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). However, the requirement of massive MIMO for cost-efficient implementation makes them more prone to hardware imperfections such as phase noise (PN). As a result, we focus on a realistic broadcast channel with a large number of antennas and hampered by the unavoidable PN. Moreover, we employ the RS transmission strategy, and we show its robustness against PN, since the sum-rate does not saturate at h…
In this paper, superimposed pilots are introduced as an alternative to time-multiplexed pilot and data symbols for mitigating pilot contamination in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose a non-iterative scheme for uplink channel estimation based on superimposed pilots and derive an expression for the uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the output of a matched filter employing this channel estimate. Based on this expression, we observe that power control is essential when superimposed pilots are employed. Moreover, the quality of the channel esti…
We propose a hierarchical interference mitigation scheme for massive MIMO cellular networks. The MIMO precoder at each base station (BS) is partitioned into an inner precoder and an outer precoder. The inner precoder controls the intra-cell interference and is adaptive to local channel state information (CSI) at each BS (CSIT). The outer precoder controls the inter-cell interference and is adaptive to channel statistics. Such hierarchical precoding structure reduces the number of pilot symbols required for CSI estimation in massive MIMO downlink and is robust to the backhaul latency. We study …
Low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) simplify the design of millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) basestations, but increase vulnerability to jamming attacks. As a remedy, we propose HERMIT (short for Hybrid jammER MITigation), a method that combines a hardware-friendly adaptive analog transform with a corresponding digital equalizer: The analog transform removes most of the jammer's energy prior to data conversion; the digital equalizer suppresses jammer residues while detecting the legitimate transmit data. We provide theoretical r…
Time-division duplex (TDD) based massive MIMO systems rely on the reciprocity of the wireless propagation channels when calculating the downlink precoders based on uplink pilots. However, the effective uplink and downlink channels incorporating the analog radio front-ends of the base station (BS) and user equipments (UEs) exhibit non-reciprocity due to non-identical behavior of the individual transmit and receive chains. When downlink precoder is not aware of such channel non-reciprocity (NRC), system performance can be significantly degraded due to NRC induced interference terms. In this work…
In this paper, we propose two subspace-projection-based precoding schemes, namely, full-projection (FP)- and partial-projection (PP)-based precoding, for a cognitive radio multiple-input multiple-output (CR-MIMO) network to mitigate its interference to a primary time-division-duplexing (TDD) system. The proposed precoding schemes are capable of estimating interference channels between CR and primary networks, and incorporating the interference from the primary to the CR system into CR precoding via a novel sensing approach. Then, the CR performance and resulting interference of the proposed pr…
The Internet of Things (IoT) could enable the development of cloud multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where internet-enabled devices can work as distributed transmission/reception entities. We expect that spatial multiplexing with distributed reception using cloud MIMO would be a key factor of future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we first review practical receivers for distributed reception of spatially multiplexed transmit data where the fusion center relies on quantized received signals conveyed from geographically separated receive nodes. Using the structures of …
Wireless systems must be resilient to jamming attacks. Existing mitigation methods require knowledge of the jammer's transmit characteristics. However, this knowledge may be difficult to acquire, especially for smart jammers that attack only specific instants during transmission in order to evade mitigation. We propose a novel method that mitigates attacks by smart jammers on massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) basestations (BSs). Our approach builds on recent progress in joint channel estimation and data detection (JED) and exploits the fact that a jammer cannot change…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) technology promises unprecedentedly high data rates for next-generation wireless systems. To be practically viable, mmWave massive MU-MIMO basestations (BS) must (i) rely on low-resolution data-conversion and (ii) be robust to jammer interference. This paper considers the problem of mitigating the impact of a permanently transmitting jammer during uplink transmission to a BS equipped with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). To this end, we propose SNIPS, short for Soft-Nulling of Interferers wi…
We present a cognitive prototype that demonstrates a colocated, frequency-division-multiplexed, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar which implements both temporal and spatial sub-Nyquist sampling. The signal is sampled and recovered via the Xampling framework. Cognition is due to the fact that the transmitter adapts its signal spectrum by emitting only those subbands that the receiver samples and processes. Real-time experiments demonstrate sub-Nyquist MIMO recovery of target scenes with 87.5% spatio-temporal bandwidth reduction and signal-to-noise-ratio of -10 dB.
This letter presents a novel detection strategy for Spatially-Multiplexed Generalized Spatial Modulation systems. It is a multi-stage detection that produces a list of candidates of the transmitted signal vector, sorted according to the proximity of the data vector to one of the possible vector subspaces. The quality metric and list-length metric selects the best candidate and manages the list length, respectively. Performance results show that it significantly reduces the performance gap to the optimal maximum likelihood detector, while maintaining significant computational cost reduction.
A novel transmission protocol is conceived for a multi-user, multi-relay, multiple-input--multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (MIMO-OFDMA) cellular network based on joint transmit and receive beamforming. More specifically, the network's MIMO channels are mathematically decomposed into several effective multiple-input--single-output (MISO) channels, which are spatially multiplexed for transmission. For the sake of improving the attainable capacity, these MISO channels are grouped using a pair of novel grouping algorithms, which are then evaluated in terms of their per…
In this paper, we consider delay-optimal MIMO precoder and power allocation design for a MIMO Link in wireless fading channels. There are $L$ data streams spatially multiplexed onto the MIMO link with heterogeneous packet arrivals and delay requirements. The transmitter is assumed to have knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) as well as the joint queue state information (QSI) of the $L$ buffers. Using $L$-dimensional Markov Decision Process (MDP), we obtain optimal precoding and power allocation policies for general delay regime, which consists of an online solution and an offline s…
In this work we propose novel decision feedback (DF) detection algorithms with error propagation mitigation capabilities for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing systems based on multiple processing branches. The novel strategies for detection exploit different patterns, orderings and constraints for the design of the feedforward and feedback filters. We present constrained minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) filters designed with constraints on the shape and magnitude of the feedback filters for the multi-branch MIMO receivers and show that the proposed MMSE design does not requ…
Previous studies in the literature for video transmission over wireless communication systems focused on combating the effects of additive channel noise and fading channels without taking the impairments in the physical layer such as phase noise (PHN) into account. Oscillator phase noise impairs the performance of multi-input multi-output- orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems in providing high data rates for video applications and may lead to decoding failure. In this paper, we propose a light field (LF) video transmission system in wireless channels, and analyze join…
Sharing radar spectrum with communication systems is an emerging area of research. Deploying commercial wireless communication services in radar bands give wireless operators the much needed additional spectrum to meet the growing bandwidth demands. However, to enable spectrum sharing between these two fundamentally different systems interference concerns must be addressed. In order to assess interference concerns we design a three-dimensional (3D) channel model between radar and cellular base stations (BSs) in which the radar uses a two-dimensional (2D) antenna array and the BS uses a one-dim…
Mobility and blockage are two critical challenges in wireless transmission over millimeter-wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) bands. In this paper, we investigate network massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission for mmWave/THz downlink in the presence of mobility and blockage. Considering the mmWave/THz propagation characteristics, we first propose to apply per-beam synchronization for network massive MIMO to mitigate the channel Doppler and delay dispersion effects. Accordingly, we establish a transmission model. We then investigate network massive MIMO downlink transmission …
Massive MIMO is seen as a main enabler for low latency communications, thanks to its high spatial degrees of freedom. The channel hardening and favorable propagation properties of Massive MIMO are particularly important for multiplexing several URLLC devices. However, the actual utility of channel hardening and spatial multiplexing is dependent critically on the accuracy of channel knowledge. When several low latency devices are multiplexed, the cost for acquiring accurate knowledge becomes critical, and it is not evident how many devices can be served with a latency-reliability requirement an…
Multi-antenna (MIMO) processing is a promising solution to the problem of jammer mitigation. Existing methods mitigate the jammer based on an estimate of its subspace (or receive statistics) acquired through a dedicated training phase. This strategy has two main drawbacks: (i) it reduces the communication rate since no data can be transmitted during the training phase and (ii) it can be evaded by smart or multi-antenna jammers that are quiet during the training phase or that dynamically change their subspace through time-varying beamforming. To address these drawbacks, we propose joint jammer …
Beamforming is an essential technology in the 5G massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MMIMO) communications, which are subject to many impairments due to the nature of wireless transmission channel, i.e. the air. The inter-cell interference (ICI) is one of the main impairments faced by 5G communications due to frequency-reuse technologies. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL) assisted full dynamic beamforming for ICI mitigation in 5G downlink. The proposed algorithm is a joint of beamforming and full dynamic Q-learning technology to minimize the ICI, and results in a low-…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication is a promising technology for increasing spectral efficiency in wireless networks. Two of the main challenges massive MIMO systems face are degraded channel estimation accuracy due to pilot contamination and increase in computational load and hardware complexity due to the massive amount of antennas. In this paper, we focus on the problem of channel estimation in massive MIMO systems, while addressing these two challenges: We jointly design the pilot sequences to mitigate the effect of pilot contamination and propose an analog combine…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) promises unprecedented data rates for next-generation wireless systems. To be practically viable, mmWave massive MU-MIMO basestations (BSs) must rely on low-resolution data converters which leaves them vulnerable to jammer interference. This paper proposes beam-slicing, a method that mitigates the impact of a permanently transmitting jammer during uplink transmission for BSs equipped with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Beam-slicing is a localized analog spatial transform that focuses the j…
This paper studies the effectiveness of relaying for interference mitigation in an interference-limited communication scenario. We are motivated by the observation that in a cellular network, a relay node placed at the cell edge observes a combination of intended signal and inter-cell interference that is correlated with the received signal at a nearby destination, so a relaying link can effectively allow the antennas at the relay and at the destination to be pooled together for both signal enhancement and interference mitigation. We model this scenario by a MIMO Gaussian relay channel with a …
Spectrum sharing between radars and cellular systems is an emerging area of research. In this paper, we model channel between a seaborne MIMO radar and MIMO cellular system. We model a 2D channel to capture the azimuth aspect of the spectrum sharing scenario. Our channel modeling methodology allows MIMO radar to place accurate nulls in the azimuth location of base stations (BS), thus, protecting them from harmful radar interference. We use a projection based approach, where radar waveform is projected onto null space of channel, for mitigating radar interference to BSs. This is also known as a…
We analyze the performance of massive MIMO systems with $N$-antenna users. The benefit is that $N$ streams can be multiplexed per user, at the price of increasing the channel estimation overhead linearly with $N$. Uplink and downlink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derived for any $N$, and these are achievable using estimated channels and per-user-basis MMSE-SIC detectors. Large-system approximations of the SEs are obtained. This analysis shows that MMSE-SIC has similar asymptotic SE as linear MMSE detectors, indicating that the SE increase from having multi-antenna users can be harve…
Sharing global channel information at base stations (BSs) is commonly assumed for downlink multi-cell precoding. In the context of massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems where each BS is equipped with a large number of antennas, sharing instant fading channel coefficients consumes a large amount of resource. To consider practically implementable methods, we study in this paper interference reduction based on precoding using the large-scale fading coefficients that depend on the path-loss model and are independent of a specific antenna. We focus on the downlink multi-cell precoding des…
Interference alignment (IA) has recently emerged as a promising interference mitigation technique for interference networks. In this letter, we focus on the IA non-iterative transceiver design problem in a multiple-input-multiple-output interfering broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC), and observed that there is previously unexploited flexibility in different permutations of user ordering. By choosing a good user ordering for a pre-determined IA inter-channel-interference allocation, an improved transceiver design can be accomplished. In order to achieve a more practical performance-complexity tradeof…
In this paper, we consider the problem of preamble design in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing offset quadrature amplitude modulation based filter bank multicarrier (OQAM/FBMC) and propose a preamble optimization method for the frequency division multiplexing (FDM)-structured preamble. Specifically, we formulate an optimization problem to determine the frequency division multiplexed preambles, where the objective is to minimize the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimation, subject to the constraint on the transmit energy. For two transmit antennas, we find the re…
This chapter presents joint interference suppression and power allocation algorithms for DS-CDMA and MIMO networks with multiple hops and amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols. A scheme for joint allocation of power levels across the relays and linear interference suppression is proposed. We also consider another strategy for joint interference suppression and relay selection that maximizes the diversity available in the system. Simulations show that the proposed cross-layer optimization algorithms obtain significant gains in capacity and performance over existing schemes.
We consider efficient communications over the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiway distributed relay channel (MDRC) with full data exchange, where each user, equipped with multiple antennas, broadcasts its message to all the other users via the help of a number of distributive relays. We propose a physical-layer network coding (PNC) based scheme involving linear precoding for channel alignment nested lattice coding for PNC, and lattice-based precoding for interference mitigation, We show that, with the proposed scheme, distributed relaying achieves the same sum-rate as cooperative re…
The main focus and contribution of this paper is a novel network-MIMO TDD architecture that achieves spectral efficiencies comparable with "Massive MIMO", with one order of magnitude fewer antennas per active user per cell. The proposed architecture is based on a family of network-MIMO schemes defined by small clusters of cooperating base stations, zero-forcing multiuser MIMO precoding with suitable inter-cluster interference constraints, uplink pilot signals reuse across cells, and frequency reuse. The key idea consists of partitioning the users population into geographically determined "bins…
In this paper, we present a novel framework that can be used to study the capacity and power scaling properties of linear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) $d\times d$ antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks. In particular, we model these networks as random dynamical systems (RDS) and calculate their $d$ Lyapunov exponents. Our analysis can be applied to systems with any per-hop channel fading distribution, although in this contribution we focus on Rayleigh fading. Our main results are twofold: 1) the total transmit power at the $n$th node will follow a deterministic trajectory thr…

High area-efficiency is achieved via algorithmic and architec…
We consider a full-duplex decode-and-forward system, where the wirelessly powered relay employs the time-switching protocol to receive power from the source and then transmit information to the destination. It is assumed that the relay node is equipped with two sets of antennas to enable full-duplex communications. Three different interference mitigation schemes are studied, namely, 1) optimal 2) zero-forcing and 3) maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission. We develop new outage probability expressions to investigate delay-constrained transmission throughput of these schemes. Our ana…
In this paper, we investigate the system performance of a multi-cell multi-user (MU) hybrid millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network. Due to the reuse of pilot symbols among different cells, the performance of channel estimation is expected to be degraded by pilot contamination, which is considered as a fundamental performance bottleneck of conventional multicell MU massive MIMO networks. To analyze the impact of pilot contamination to the system performance, we first derive the closed-form approximation of the normalized mean squared error (MS…
Providing consistently high wireless capacity is becoming increasingly important to support the applications required by future digital enterprises. In this paper, we propose Eigen-direction-aware ZF (EDA-ZF) with partial coordination among base stations (BSs) and distributed interference suppression as a practical approach to achieve this objective. We compare our solution with Zero Forcing (ZF), entailing neither BS coordination or inter-cell interference mitigation, and Network MIMO (NeMIMO), where full BS coordination enables centralized inter-cell interference management. We also evaluate…
This paper considers the so-called MIMO interference channel. This situation has relevance in applications such as multi-cell coordination in cellular networks as well as spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks among others. We address the design of precoding (i.e. beamforming) vectors at each sender with the aim of striking a compromise between beamforming gain at the intended receiver (Egoism) and the mitigation of interference created towards other receivers (Altruism). Combining egoistic and altruistic beamforming has been shown previously to be instrumental to optimizing the rates in…
Analog beamforming greatly reduces the implementation cost of massive antenna transceivers by using only one up/down-conversion chain. However, it incurs a large pilot overhead when used with conventional channel estimation (CE) techniques. This is because these CE techniques involve digital processing, requiring the up/down-conversion chain to be time-multiplexed across the antenna dimensions. This paper introduces a novel CE technique, called continuous analog channel estimation (CACE), that avoids digital processing, enables analog beamforming at the receiver and additionally provides resil…
We present a novel iterative detection and decoding scheme for the uplink of large-scale multiuser multiple-antenna systems. In order to reduce the receiver's energy consumption and computational complexity, 1-bit analog-to-digital converters are used in the front-end. The performance loss due to the 1-bit quantization can be mitigated by using large-scale antenna arrays. We propose a linear low-resolution-aware minimum mean square error detector for soft multiuser interference mitigation. Moreover, short block length low-density parity-check codes are considered for avoiding high latency. In …
Millimeter wave (mm-wave) and massive MIMO have been proposed for next generation wireless systems. However, there are many open problems for the implementation of those technologies. In particular, beamforming is necessary in mm-wave systems in order to counter high propagation losses. However, conventional beamsteering is not always appropriate in rich scattering multipath channels with frequency selective fading, such as those found in indoor environments. In this context, time-reversal (TR) is considered a promising beamforming technique for such mm-wave massive MIMO systems. In this paper…
A massive MIMO system entails a large number of base station antennas M serving a much smaller number of users. This leads to large gains in spectral and energy efficiency compared with other technologies. As the number of antennas M grows, the performance of such systems gets limited by pilot contamination interference. Large Scale Fading Precoding/Postcoding (LSFP) was proposed in literature for mitigation of pilot contamination. It was shown recently that in channels without spatial correlation (uncorrelated base station antennas) LSFP leads to large spectral-efficiency gains. Also, recentl…
Interference limits performance in wireless networks, and cooperation among receivers or transmitters can help mitigate interference by forming distributed MIMO systems. Earlier work shows how limited receiver cooperation helps mitigate interference. The scenario with transmitter cooperation, however, is more difficult to tackle. In this paper we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing transmitters to make progress towards this direction. We characterize the capacity region to within 6.5 bits/s/Hz, regardless of channel parameters. Based on the constant-to-optimality…
We first conceive a novel transmission protocol for a multi-relay multiple-input--multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (MIMO-OFDMA) cellular network based on joint transmit and receive beamforming. We then address the associated network-wide spectral efficiency (SE) and energy spectral efficiency (ESE) optimization problems. More specifically, the network's MIMO channels are mathematically decomposed into several effective multiple-input--single-output (MISO) channels, which are essentially spatially multiplexed for transmission. Hence, these effective MISO channels ar…
We address receiver (RX) signal processing in MIMO systems under in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, which causes cross-talk of mirror-subcarriers in OFDM systems. We extend the typically reported single-user studies to uplink OFDMA-based multiuser MIMO, with simultaneous user multiplexing in frequency and spatial domains. We also incorporate multiple external interferers, for modeling challenging conditions in heterogeneous networks. In the signal processing developments, we exploit the augmented subcarrier processing, which processes each subcarrier jointly with its counterpart at the image…
