Five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons equations are investigated in the framework of an extended Kerr-Schild strategy to search for black holes solutions. The fulfillment of Einstein equations constrains the Chern-Simons coupling constant to a value determined by the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic configuration.
Kerr-Schild formalism is generalized by incorporation of the Kerr Theorem with polynomials of higher degrees in $Y\in CP^1.$ It leads to multisheeted twistor spaces and multiparticle solutions.
Specialising to the case of Kerr-Schild spacetimes, which include the Kerr black hole and gravitational wave solutions, we propose a modification of the Penrose quasi-local energy. The modification relies on the existence of a natural Minkowski background for Kerr-Schild spacetimes. We find that the modified surface integral reduces to a volume integral of the Einstein tensor, which has been proposed previously as an appropriate definition for quasi-local energy for Kerr-Schild backgrounds. Furthermore, in the special case that the Kerr-Schild null vector is normal to the surface of interest, …
Aligned to the Kerr-Schild geometry electromagnetic excitations are investigated, and asymptotically exact solutions are obtained for the low-frequency limit.
We study Kerr-Schild-Kundt class of metrics in generic gravity theories with Maxwell's field. We prove that these metrics linearize and simplify the field equations of generic gravity theories with Maxwell's field.
General properties of Kerr-Schild spacetimes with (A)dS background in arbitrary dimension are studied. It is shown that the geodetic Kerr-Schild vector k is a multiple WAND of the spacetime. Einstein Kerr-Schild spacetimes with non-expanding k are shown to be of Weyl type N, while the expanding spacetimes are of type II or D. It is shown that this class of spacetimes obeys the optical constraint. This allows us to solve Sachs equation, determine r-dependence of boost weight zero components of the Weyl tensor and discuss curvature singularities.
The Kerr-Schild form provides a natural way of realizing the classical double copy that relates exact solutions in general relativity to exact solutions in gauge theory. In this paper, we examine the asymptotic structure of Kerr-Schild form. In Newman-Unti gauge, we find a generic solution space satisfying the Kerr-Schild form in series expansion around null infinity. The news function in the solution space is chiral and can not lead to a mass loss formula. A class of asymptotically flat complex pp-wave solutions in closed form is obtained from the solution space.
The charged and spinning lightlike solutions are obtained in the Kerr-Schild formalism. In particular, one of them may be considered as an ultrarelativistic boost of the Kerr-Newman solution along the direction of angular momentum. The Kerr singular ring disappears, however, there remains a finite parameter $a$ which determines spin by the Kerr relation $J=ma$. By $J=\hbar$, the parameter $a$ is de Broglie wavelength of the corresponding photon. Electromagnetic field is aligned to the Kerr null congruence. Some of the presented solutions contain singular beam pulse (pp-strings) like the consid…
We construct the classical double copy formalism for M-theory. This extends the current state of the art by including the three form potential of eleven dimensional supergravity along with the metric. The key for this extension is to construct a Kerr-Schild type Ansatz for exceptional field theory. This Kerr-Schild Ansatz then allows us to find the solutions of charged objects such as the membrane from a set of single copy fields. The exceptional field theory formalism then automatically produces the IIB Kerr-Schild ansatz allowing the construction of the single copy for the fields of IIB supe…
Using a complex representation of the Debney-Kerr-Schild (DKS) solutions and the Kerr theorem we analyze the boosted Kerr geometries and give the exact and explicit expressions for the metrics, the principal null congruences, the coordinate systems and the location of the singularities for arbitrary value and orientation of the boost with respect to the angular momentum. In the limiting, ultrarelativistic case we obtain light-like solutions possessing diverging and twisting principal null congruences and having, contrary to the known pp-wave limiting solutions, a non-zero value of the total an…
We consider Einstein Born-Infeld theory with a null fluid in Kerr-Schild Geometry. We find accelerated charge solutions of this theory. Our solutions reduce to the Plebanski solution when the acceleration vanishes and to the Bonnor-Vaidya solution as the Born-Infeld parameter b goes to infinity. We also give the explicit form of the energy flux formula due to the acceleration of the charged sources.
We define (non-Einsteinian) universal metrics as the metrics that solve the source-free covariant field equations of generic gravity theories. Here, extending the rather scarce family of universal metrics known in the literature, we show that the Kerr-Schild--Kundt class of metrics are universal. Besides being interesting on their own, these metrics can provide consistent backgrounds for quantum field theory at extremely high energies.
We extend the standard Kerr-Schild solution generating method to higher order scalar tensor theories that are shift-invariant for the scalar field. Certain degeneracy conditions, crucial for the absence of Ostrogradski ghosts, are found to be required for the validity of the Kerr-Schild ansatz while on the other hand, theories with no parity symmetry are excluded from the solution generating method. The extended Kerr-Schild symmetry turns out to be a very useful tool to easily construct black hole solutions from simple seed configurations. In particular, the generating method developed is adap…
In this work we explore the consequences of considering from the very beginning the stationary and axisymmetric properties of the Kerr black hole as one attempts to derive this solution through the Kerr-Schild ansatz. The first consequence is kinematical and is based on a new stationary and axisymmetric version of the Kerr theorem that yields to the precise shear-free and geodesic null congruence of flat spacetime characterizing the Kerr solution. A straightforward advantage of this strategy is that now the parameter $a$ appears naturally as associated to the conserved angular momentum of the …
We consider an extended version of the Kerr theorem incorporated in the Kerr-Schild formalism. It allows one to construct the series of exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations from a holomorphic generating function $F$ of twistor variables. The exact multiparticle Kerr-Schild solutions are obtained from generating function of the form $F=\prod_i^k F_i, $ where $F_i$ are partial generating functions for the spinning particles $ i=1...k$. Gravitational and electromagnetic interaction of the spinning particles occurs via the light-like singular twistor lines. As a result, each spi…
We consider the black hole solutions of five-dimensional gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and an induced gravity term on a 2-brane of codimension-2. Applying the Kerr-Schild method we derive additional solutions which include charge and angular momentum. To improve our understanding of this geometry we study the geodesic structure of such spacetimes.
We demonstrate that the general (A)dS-Kerr-NUT solutions in D dimensions with ([D/2], [(D+1)/2]) signature admit [D/2] linearly-independent, mutually-orthogonal and affinely-parameterised null geodesic congruences. This enables us to write the metrics in a multi-Kerr-Schild form, where the mass and all of the NUT parameters enter the metrics linearly. In the case of D=2n, we also obtain n harmonic 2-forms, which can be viewed as charged (A)dS-Kerr-NUT solution at the linear level of small-charge expansion, for the higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theories. In the BPS limit, these 2-forms re…
We propose an adaptation of the Kerr-Schild method by implementing the correspondence relations (mapping) between Ricci-based Gravity (RBG) and General Relativity (GR). Basically, we generate GR known solutions from a canonical metric with a well-defined form and then obtain the configuration of this solution for the Gravity f(R). The new method allows us to perturb the metric associated with GR with a null geodetic vector, but instead of taking us to a new solution described by Einstein's gravitational sector, it allows us to configure this solution in an RBG.
The Kerr-Schild version of the Schwarzschild metric contains a Minkowski background which provides a definition of a boosted black hole. There are two Kerr-Schild versions corresponding to ingoing or outgoing principle null directions. We show that the two corresponding Minkowski backgrounds and their associated boosts have an unexpected difference. We analyze this difference and discuss the implications in the nonlinear regime for the gravitational memory effect resulting from the ejection of massive particles from an isolated system. We show that the nonlinear effect agrees with the lineariz…
In the present work, the spin-coefficient formalism of Newman and Penrose is used to formulate geometric constraints for the existence of Kerr-Schild groups, i.e. continuous groups of generalized Kerr-Schild transformations. In addition, by characterizing the geometric structure of the deformed Einstein tensor of the generalized Kerr-Schild class, restrictions are imposed on the existence of apparent conservation laws in generic spacetimes, which are defined via considering special Kerr-Schild currents whose associated Kerr-Schild vector fields coincide with timelike Killing vector fields of p…
In a very well-known paper, Virbhadra's research group proved that the Weinberg, Papapetrou, Landau and Lifshitz, and Einstein energy-momentum complexes ``coincide'' for all metrics of Kerr-Schild class. A few years later, Virbhadra clarified that this ``coincidence'' in fact holds for metrics more general than the Kerr-Schild class. In the present paper, this study is extended for the Bergmann-Thomson complex and it is proved that this complex also ``coincides'' with those complexes for a more general than the Kerr-Schild class metric.
We discuss the physical interpretation of stress-energy tensors that source static spherically symmetric Kerr-Schild metrics. We find that the sources of such metrics with no curvature singularities or horizons do not simultaneously satisfy the weak and strong energy conditions. Sensible stress-energy tensors usually satisfy both of them. Under most circumstances these sources are not perfect fluids and contain shear stresses. We show that for these systems the classical double copy associates the electric charge density to the Komar energy density. In addition, we demonstrate that the stress-…
We consider Newman's representation of the Kerr geometry as a complex retarded-time construction generated by a source propagating along a complex world-line. We notice that the complex world-line forms really an open complex string, endpoints of which should have independent dynamics by the string excitations. The adjoined to complex Kerr string twistorial structure is determined by the Kerr theorem, and we obtain that the resulting Kerr's equation describes a quartic in projective twistor $CP^3 ,$ which is known as Calabi-Yau twofold of superstring theory. Along with other remarkable similar…
An historical account of the reasoning that led to the discovery of the Kerr and Kerr-Schild metrics in 1963-1964, and their physical interpretation as rotating black holes, is presented.
In the context of effective field theory, we consider quantum gravity with minimally coupled massless particles. Fixing the background geometry to be of the Kerr-Schild type, we fully determine the one-loop effective action of the theory whose finite non-local part is induced by the long-distance portion of quantum loops. This is accomplished using the non-local expansion of the heat kernel in addition to a non-linear completion technique through which the effective action is expanded in gravitational curvatures. Via Euclidean methods, we identify a logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Haw…
We determine all infinitesimal transverse deformations of extreme horizons in Einstein-Maxwell theory that preserve axisymmetry. In particular, we show that the general static transverse deformation of the AdS(2) X S(2) near-horizon geometry is a two-parameter family, which contains the known extreme charged, accelerating, static black hole solution held in equilibrium by an external electric or magnetic field (Ernst solution) and a special case of the extreme Kerr-Newman-Melvin solution. More generally, we find a three-parameter family of deformations of the extreme Kerr-Newman horizon, which…
The complete solution of the vacuum Kerr-Schild equations in general relativity is presented, including the space-times with a curved background metric. The corresponding result for a flat background has been obtained by Kerr.
The double copy is a much-studied relationship between scattering amplitudes in gauge and gravity theories, that has subsequently been extended to classical field solutions. In nearly all previous examples, the graviton field is defined around Minkowski space. Recently, it has been suggested that one may set up a double copy for gravitons defined around a non-trivial background. We investigate this idea from the point of view of the classical double copy. First, we use Kerr-Schild spacetimes to construct graviton solutions in curved space, as double copies of gauge fields on non-zero gauge bac…
The complete solution of Einstein's gravitational equations with a vacuum-vacuum Kerr-Schild pencil of metrics $g_{ab}+V l_al_b$ is obtained. Our result generalizes the solution of the Kerr-Schild problem with a flat metric $g_{ab}$ (represented by the Kerr theorem) to the case when $g_{ab}$ is the metric of a curved space-time.
We study in some detail the "extended Kerr-Schild" formulation of general relativity, which decomposes the gauge-independent degrees of freedom of a generic metric into two arbitrary functions and the choice of a flat background tetrad. We recast Einstein's equations and spacetime curvatures in the extended Kerr-Schild form and discuss their properties, illustrated with simple examples.
We consider the D dimensional Einstein Maxwell theory with a null fluid in the Kerr-Schild Geometry. We obtain a complete set of differential conditions that are necessary for finding solutions. We examine the case of vanishing pressure and cosmological constant in detail. For this specific case, we give the metric, the electromagnetic vector potential and the fluid energy density. This is, in fact, the generalization of the well known Bonnor-Vaidya solution to arbitrary D dimensions. We show that due to the acceleration of charged sources, there is an energy flux in $D \ge 4$ dimensions and w…
The Kerr-Schild-Kundt (KSK) metrics are known to be one of the universal metrics in general relativity, which means that they solve the vacuum field equations of any gravity theory constructed from the curvature tensor and its higher-order covariant derivatives. There is yet no complete proof that these metrics are universal in the presence of matter fields such as electromagnetic and/or scalar fields. In order to get some insight into what happens when we extend the "universality theorem" to the case in which the electromagnetic field is present, as a first step, we study the KSK class of met…
Kerr-Schild (KS) geometry is based on a congruence of twistor null lines which forms a holographic space-time determined by the Kerr theorem. We describe in details integration of the non-stationary Debney-Kerr-Schild equations for electromagnetic excitations of black-holes taking into account the consistent back-reaction to metric. The exact KS solutions have the form of singular beam-like pulses supported on twistor null lines of the Kerr congruence. These twistor-beam pulses have very strong back reaction to metric and BH horizon and produce a fluctuating holographic KS geometry which takes…
We construct the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric extension of the generalized Kerr-Schild ansatz in the flux formulation of Double Field Theory. We show that this ansatz is compatible with $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetry as long as it is not written in terms of generalized null vectors. Supersymmetric consistency is obtained through a set of conditions that imply linearity of the generalized gravitino perturbation and unrestricted perturbations of the generalized background dilaton and dilatino. As a final step we parametrize the previous theory in terms of the field content of the low energy…
We analyze the field equations of Lovelock gravity for the Kerr-Schild metric ansatz, $g_{ab}=\bar g_{ab} +λk_ak_b$, with background metric $\bar g_{ab}$, background null vector $k^a$ and free parameter $λ$. Focusing initially on the Gauss-Bonnet case, we find a simple extension of the Einstein gravity results only in theories having a unique constant curvature vacuum. The field equations then reduce to a single equation at order $λ^2$. More general Gauss-Bonnet theories having two distinct vacua yield a pair of equations, at orders $λ$ and $λ^2$ that are not obviously compatible. Our results …
We study extended Kerr-Schild (xKS) spacetimes, i.e. an extension of the Kerr-Schild (KS) ansatz where, in addition to the null KS vector, a spacelike vector field appears in the metric. In contrast to the KS case, we obtain only a necessary condition under which the KS vector is geodetic. However, it is shown that this condition becomes sufficient if we appropriately restrict the geometry of the null KS and spacelike vector. It turns out that xKS spacetimes with a geodetic KS vector are of Weyl type I and the KS vector has the same optical properties in the full and background spacetimes. In …
We develop the "generalized Gordon ansatz" for the ghost-free versions of both massive and bimetric gravity, an ansatz which is general enough to include almost all spacetimes commonly considered to be physically interesting, and restricted enough to greatly simplify calculations. The ansatz allows explicit calculation of the matrix square root gamma = sqrt{g^{-1} f} appearing as a central feature of the ghost-free analysis. In particular, this ansatz automatically allows us to write the effective stress-energy tensor as that corresponding to a perfect fluid. A qualitatively similar "generaliz…

We show that the Kerr-Schild ansatz can be extended from the metric to the tetrad, and then to teleparallel gravity where curvature vanishes but torsion does not. We derive the equations of motion for the Kerr-Schild null vector, and describe the solution for a rotating black hole in this framework. It is shown that the solution depends on the chosen tetrad in a non-trivial way if the spin connection is fixed to be the one of the flat background spacetime. We show furthermore that any Kerr-Schild solution with a flat background is also a solution of $f(\mathcal{T})$ gravity.
We discuss the generalization of the Kerr-Schild (KS) formalism for general relativity and double field theory (DFT) to the heterotic DFT and supergravity. We first introduce a heterotic KS ansatz by introducing a pair of null O(d,d+G) generalized tangent vectors. The pair of null vectors are represented by a pair of d-dimensional vector fields, and one of the vector fields is not a null vector. This implies that the null property of the usual KS formalism, which plays a crucial role in linearizing the field equations, can be partially relaxed in a consistent way. We show that the equations of…
We will show that the Nariai metric, i.e. the static spherically symmetric vacuum spacetime with a cosmological constant, admits a conformally Kerr-Schild spacetime representation. We find the vacuum solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for the Nariai metric using the Horsky-Mitskievich generating conjecture.
Kerr-Schild metrics have been introduced as a linear superposition of the flat spacetime metric and a squared null vector field, say $\boldsymbol{k}$, multiplied by some scalar function, say $H$. The basic assumption which led to Kerr solution was that $\boldsymbol{k}$ be both geodesic and shearfree. This condition is relaxed here and Kerr-Schild ansatz is revised by treating Kerr-Schild metrics as {\it exact linear perturbations} of Minkowski spacetime. The scalar function $H$ is taken as the perturbing function, so that Einstein's field equations are solved order by order in powers of $H$. I…
Exact Kerr-Schild (KS) solutions for electromagnetic excitations of black-holes, have the form of singular beams supported on twistor lines of the KS geometry. These beams have a very strong back-reaction on the metric and horizon and create a fluctuating KS geometry occupying an intermediate position between the classical and quantum gravities. We consider the Kerr theorem, which determines the twistor structure of the KS geometry and the corresponding holographic prequantum space-time adapted to subsequent quantum treatment.
As is well-known, Kerr-Schild metrics linearize the Einstein tensor. We shall see here that they also simplify the Gauss-Bonnet tensor, which turns out to be only quadratic in the arbitrary Kerr-Schild function f when the seed metric is maximally symmetric. This property allows us to give a simple analytical expression for its trace, when the seed metric is a five dimensional maximally symmetric spacetime in spheroidal coordinates with arbitrary parameters a and b. We also write in a (fairly) simple form the full Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet tensor (with a cosmological term) when the seed metric is f…
Algebraically special fields with no gravitational radiation are described. Kerr-Schild fields, which include as a concrete case the Kinnersley photon rocket, form an important subclass of them.
The Kerr-Schild pencil of metrics $\tilde g_{ab}=g_{ab}+V l_al_b$, with $g_{ab}$ and $\tilde g_{ab}$ satisfying the vacuum Einstein equations, is investigated in the case when the null vector $l$ has vanishing twist. This class of Kerr-Schild metrics contains two solutions: the Kasner metric and a metric wich can be obtained from the Kasner metric by a complex coordinate transformation. Both are limiting cases of the Kóta-Perjés metrics. The base space-time is a pp-wave.
