We introduce a photonic crystal ring cavity that resembles an internal gear and unites photonic crystal (PhC) and whispering gallery mode (WGM) concepts. This `microgear' photonic crystal ring (MPhCR) is created by applying a periodic modulation to the inside boundary of a microring resonator to open a large bandgap, as in a PhC cavity, while maintaining the ring's circularly symmetric outside boundary and high quality factor ($Q$), as in a WGM cavity. The MPhCR targets a specific WGM to open a large PhC bandgap up to tens of free spectral ranges, compressing the mode spectrum while maintaining the high-$Q$, angular momenta, and waveguide coupling properties of the WGM modes. In particular, near the dielectric band-edge, we observe modes whose group velocity is slowed down by 10 times relative to conventional microring modes while supporting $Q~=~(1.1\pm0.1)\times10^6$. This $Q$ is $\approx$50$\times$ that of the previous record in slow light devices. Using the slow light design as a starting point, we further demonstrate the ability to localize WGMs into photonic crystal defect (dPhC) modes for the first time, enabling a more than 10$\times$ reduction of mode volume compared to conventional WGMs while maintaining high-$Q$ up to (5.6$\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^5$. Importantly, this additional dPhC localization is achievable without requiring detailed electromagnetic design. Moreover, controlling their frequencies and waveguide coupling is straightforward in the MPhCR, thanks to its WGM heritage. By using a PhC to strongly modify fundamental properties of WGMs, such as group velocity and localization, the MPhCR provides an exciting platform for a broad range of photonics applications, including sensing/metrology, nonlinear optics, and cavity quantum electrodynamics.
An array of ring resonators specifically designed can perform as a topological insulator. We conduct simulations using both Tight-Binding Model (TBM) and Transfer Matrix Method (TMM) to analyze the transport properties of such optical structure, verifying the presence of robust topological edge states which is immune to disorder and defect. We have also made a comparison between these two methods, of which results suggesting that TBM is only applicable under weakly-coupling condition while TMM is more rigorous. Finally we compared the structure with common microring array and coupled resonator…
Hopf insulators are topological insulators whose topological behavior arises from the nontrivial mapping from a 3D sphere to a 2D sphere, known as the Hopf map. The Hopf map, typically encountered in the study of spinor and skyrmion systems, is classified topologically by an integer invariant called the Hopf index. Here we show that due to the periodic circulation of light inside each microring, a 2D lattice of microring resonators can emulate an $N$-band photonic Hopf insulator with nontrivial Hopf index. In particular, we show by numerical computation and direct analytical proof that the $N$…
Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in circularly symmetric optical microresonators exhibit integer quantized angular momentum numbers due to the boundary condition imposed by the geometry. Here, we show that incorporating a photonic crystal pattern in an integrated microring can result in WGMs with fractional optical angular momentum. By choosing the photonic crystal periodicity to open a photonic bandgap with a band-edge momentum lying between that of two WGMs of the unperturbed ring, we observe hybridized WGMs with half-integer quantized angular momentum numbers ($m \in \mathbb{Z}$ + 1/2). Silicon photonics promises to alleviate the bandwidth bottleneck of modern day computing systems. But silicon photonic devices have the fundamental problem of being highly sensitive to ambient temperature fluctuations due to the high thermo-optic (TO) coefficient of silicon. Most of the approaches proposed to date to overcome this problem either require significant power consumption or incorporate materials which are not CMOS-compatible. Here we demonstrate a new class of optical devices which are passively temperature compensated, based on tailoring the optical mode confinement in silicon wav…
Silicon nitride (SiN) photonics platform has attributes of ultra-low linear and nonlinear propagation losses and CMOS-compatible fabrication process, promising large-scale multifunctional photonic circuits. However, the centrosymmetric nature of SiN inhibits second-order nonlinear optical responses in its photonics platform, which is desirable for developing efficient nonlinear active devices. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency second-order nonlinear processes in SiN photonics platform by integrating a few-layer GaSe flake on a SiN microring resonator. With the pump of microwatts continuous-…

We analyze fast and slow light transmission in a zig-zag microring resonator chain. This novel device permits the operation in both regimes. In the superluminal case, a new ubiquitous light transmission effect is found whereby the input optical pulse is reproduced in an almost simultaneous manner at the various system outputs. When the input carrier is tuned to a different frequency, the system permits to slow down the propagating optical signal. Between these two extreme cases, the relative delay can be tuned within a broad range.
A new category of optical microring resonator, which is analogous to the Möbius strip, is proposed. The "Möbius" microring resonator allows the conversion between modes with different polarizations in the ring and light must circulate two cycles to be converted back to the original polarization status, which is similar to a Möbius strip. This topology structure of polarization leads to the free spectral range be half of that corresponds to the cavity round trip. The eigenmodes of this microring are hybridizations of different polarizations and the breaking of the rotation invariance of the rin…
In this paper, a new design of optical delay line based on coupled ring resonators in photonic crystals is proposed and analyzed by means of numerical simulation in CST Microwave Studio. The performance of the proposed photonic crystal ring resonator (PhCRR) based coupled resonant optical waveguide (CROW) is compared to: point-defect cavity based coupled cavity waveguides (CCW) in photonic crystal. microring resonator (MRR) based CROW. The suggested design addresses compactness issues of the MRR CROW while offering normalized delay values better than CCW and comparable to MRR CROW. The PhCRR C…
We demonstrate voltage-tunable thermo-optic bi- and tri-stability in silicon photonic microring resonators with lateral p-i-n junctions and present a technique for characterizing the thermo-optic transient response of integrated optical resonators. Our method for thermo-optic transient response measurement is applicable to any integrated photonics platform and uses standard equipment. Thermo-optic relaxation in encapsulated waveguides is found to be approximately logarithmic in time, consistent with the analytic solution for 2D heat diffusion. We develop a model for thermo-optic microring mult…
We report a circuit cavity optomechanical system in which a nanomechanical resonator is adiabatically embedded inside an optical ring resonator with ultralow transition loss. The nanomechanical device forms part of the top layer of a horizontal silicon slot ring resonator, which enables dispersive coupling to the dielectric substrate via a tapered nanogap. Our measurements show nearly uncompromised optical quality factors (Q) after the release of the mechanical beam.
We report a tunable optical filter based on phase change material $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ embedded in a silicon microring resonator. The high thermo-optic coefficient of $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ in amorphous phase enables tuning of resonance wavelength in broad range with a very small active volume. The low-loss indium-tin-oxide electrodes are employed to induce Joule heating in $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$-Si active waveguide region. The electrically induced heating in the active region alters the effective refractive index of hybrid microring resulting in a wavelength tuning of 1.04 nm for an applied volta…
On-chip measurement of thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) of samples along with on-chip temperature measurements can be used to compensate for thermal fluctuation induced noise in refractometry using integrated photonic sensors. In this article we demonstrate a device design and describe the method to extract TOCs of liquid samples using resonant wavelength shifts of a silicon microring resonator. The TOCs of three standard fluids; De-ionized water, Ethanol and Isopropanol, were determined using our sensor and show a good agreement with values reported in literature. A mechanism for tracking of on…
Thin-film lithium niobate is an attractive integrated photonics platform due to its low optical loss and favorable optical nonlinear and electro-optic properties. However, in applications such as second harmonic generation, frequency comb generation, and microwave-to-optics conversion, the device performance is strongly impeded by the photorefractive effect inherent in thin-films. In this paper, we show that the dielectric cladding on lithium niobate microring resonator has a significant influence on the photorefractive effect. By removing the dielectric cladding layer, the photorefractive eff…
Continuous wave optical parametric oscillation (OPO) provides a flexible approach for accessing mid-infrared wavelengths between 2 $μ$m to 5 $μ$m, but has not yet been integrated into silicon nanophotonics. Typically, Kerr OPO uses a single transverse mode family for pump, signal, and idler modes, and relies on a delicate balance to achieve normal (but close-to-zero) dispersion near the pump and the requisite higher-order dispersion needed for phase- and frequency-matching. Within integrated photonics platforms, this approach results in two major problems. First, the dispersion is very sensiti…

Micro-/nanocavities that combine high quality factor ($Q$) and small mode volume ($V$) have been used to enhance light-matter interactions for cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED). Whispering gallery mode (WGM) geometries such as microdisks and microrings support high-$Q$ and are design- and fabrication-friendly, but $V$ is often limited to tens of cubic wavelengths to avoid WGM radiation. The stronger modal confinement provided by either one-dimensional or two-dimensional photonic crystal defect geometries can yield sub-cubic-wavelength $V$, yet the requirements on precise design and dimensi…

Automatic resonance alignment tuning is performed in high-order series coupled microring filters using a feedback system. By inputting only a reference wavelength, a filter is tuned such that passband ripples are dramatically reduced compared to the initial detuned state and the passband becomes centered at the reference. The method is tested on 5th order microring filters fabricated in a standard silicon photonics foundry process. Repeatable tuning is demonstrated for filters on multiple dies from the wafer and for arbitrary reference wavelengths within the free spectral range of the microrin…

Generation of photon pairs from compact, manufacturable and inexpensive silicon (Si) photonic devices at room temperature may help develop practical applications of quantum photonics. An important characteristic of photon-pair generation is the two-photon joint spectral intensity (JSI), which describes the frequency correlations of the photon pair. In particular, heralded single-photon generation requires uncorrelated photons, rather than the highly anti-correlated photons conventionally obtained under continuous-wave (CW) pumping. Recent attempts to achieve such a factorizable JSI have used s…
Optical isolators, while commonplace in bulk- and fiber-optic systems, remain a key missing component in integrated photonic systems. Isolation using magneto-optic effects has been difficult to implement due to fabrication restraints, motivating use of other non-reciprocal effects such as temporal modulation. We demonstrate a non-reciprocal modulator comprising a pair of microring modulators and a microring phase shifter in an active silicon photonic process which, in combination with standard frequency filters, facilitates isolation. Isolation up to 13 dB is measured with a 3 dB bandwidth of …
Light trapping and radiation process from linear reciprocal photonic resonators is one of the fundamental processes in optical science and engineering. Recently, the concept of coherent virtual absorption (CVA) of light was introduced and investigated for planar and cylindrical optical structures. The key feature of CVA is that by engineering the time-dependence of the excitation waveform, one can temporarily store all the input energy into the optical structure without any leakage. Here we further explore this novel concept in integrated photonic setups made of microring resonators. By using …
Deep neural networks (DNN) consist of layers of neurons interconnected by synaptic weights. A high bit-precision in weights is generally required to guarantee high accuracy in many applications. Minimizing error accumulation between layers is also essential when building large-scale networks. Recent demonstrations of photonic neural networks are limited in bit-precision due to crosstalk and the high sensitivity of optical components (e.g., resonators). Here, we experimentally demonstrate a record-high precision of 9 bits with a dithering control scheme for photonic synapses. We then numericall…
We demonstrate an ultralow loss monolithic integrated lithium niobate photonic platform consisting of dry-etched subwavelength waveguides. We show microring resonators with a quality factor of 10$^7$ and waveguides with propagation loss as low as 2.7 dB/m.
Circularly polarized light plays a key role in many applications including spectroscopy, microscopy, and control of atomic systems. Particularly in the latter, high polarization purity is often required. Integrated technologies for atomic control are progressing rapidly, but while integrated photonics can generate fields with pure linear polarization, integrated generation of highly pure circular polarization states has not been addressed. Here, we show that waveguide microring resonators, perturbed with azimuthal gratings and thereby emitting beams carrying optical orbital angular momentum, c…
High complexity, dense integrated nanophotonic circuits possessing strong nonlinearities are desirable for a breadth of applications in classical and quantum optics. In this work, we study natural phase matching via modal engineering in lithium niobate (LN) waveguides and microring resonators on chip for second harmonic generation (SHG). By carefully engineering the geometry dispersion, we observe a $26\%~W^{-1}cm^{-2}$ normalized efficiency for SHG in a waveguide with submicron transverse mode confinement. With similar cross-sectional dimensions, we demonstrate phase matched SHG in a microrin…
We describe the design and fabrication of a scalable atom-light photonic interface based on a silicon nitride microring resonator on a transparent silicon dioxide-nitride multi-layer membrane. This new photonic platform is fully compatible with freespace cold atom laser cooling, stable trapping, and sorting at around $100~$nm from the microring surface, permitting the formation of an organized, strongly interacting atom-photonic hybrid lattice. We demonstrate small radius ($R\sim$16$μ$m) microring and racetrack resonators with a high quality factor $Q=3.2\times 10^5$, projecting a single atom …
Lithium niobate (LN), dubbed by many as the silicon of photonics, has recently risen to the forefront of chip-scale nonlinear optics research since its demonstration as an ultralow-loss integrated photonics platform. Due to its significant quadratic nonlinearity ($χ^{(2)}$), LN inspires many important applications such as second-harmonic generation (SHG), spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and optical parametric oscillation. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency SHG in dual-resonant, periodically poled z-cut LN microrings, where quasi-phase matching is realized by field-assisted domain eng…

Ultra-high-Q resonators are fundamentally important to optics and microwave photonics. Up to now, it is still very challenging to boost the Q factor while maintaining a compact size for a resonator. Herein, we proposed and demonstrated an ultra-high-Q silicon-nitride (Si3N4) racetrack resonator with uniform multi-mode Si3N4 photonic waveguides. It consists of two multi-mode straight waveguides connected by two multi-mode waveguide bends (MWBs). In particular, the MWBs are based on modified Euler curves, and a multi-mode straight waveguide directional coupler is used for the fundamental mode co…
Development of low-loss photonic components in the ultraviolet (UV) band will open new prospects for classical and quantum optics. Compared with other integrated platforms, aluminum nitride (AlN) is particularly attractive as it features an enormous bandgap of ~6.2 eV and intrinsic chi(2) and chi(3) susceptibilities. In this work, we demonstrate a record quality factor of 2.1 x 105 (optical loss ~ 8 dB/cm) at 390 nm based on single-crystalline AlN microrings. The low-loss AlN UV waveguide represents a significant milestone toward UV photonic integrated circuits as it features full compatibilit…
Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) have been widely used for decades as tunable, narrow linewidth, and coherent light sources for reaching long wavelengths and are attractive for applications such as quantum random number generation and Ising machines. To date, waveguide-based OPOs have suffered from relatively high thresholds on the order of hundreds of milliwatts. With the advance in integrated photonic techniques demonstrated by high-efficiency second harmonic generation in aluminum nitride (AlN) photonic microring resonators, highly compact and nanophotonic implementation of parametric …
The group-theoretic content of photonic coupled microrings resonance phenomena is shown, in particular, an interesting emergence of pseudo-unitary group. The application to the resonance condition in a tri-microring configuration is solved exactly. A practical application of this work will be in the resonance frequency tuning based on the coupling coefficient, in particular, the Mach-Zehnder interferometer approach was analyzed for the coupling modulation.

Our device also allows us to observe difference-frequency generation in the telecom band. Our work demonstrates the great potential of the lithium niobate integrated platform for nonlinear wavelength conversion with high efficiencies.
