We demonstrate voltage-tunable thermo-optic bi- and tri-stability in silicon photonic microring resonators with lateral p-i-n junctions and present a technique for characterizing the thermo-optic transient response of integrated optical resonators. Our method for thermo-optic transient response measurement is applicable to any integrated photonics platform and uses standard equipment. Thermo-optic relaxation in encapsulated waveguides is found to be approximately logarithmic in time, consistent with the analytic solution for 2D heat diffusion. We develop a model for thermo-optic microring multi-stability and dynamics which agrees with experiment data over a wide range of operating conditions. Our work highlights the fundamental connection in semiconductor waveguides between active free-carrier removal and thermo-optic heating, a result of particular relevance to Kerr soliton state stability and on-chip frequency comb generation. The devices studied here were fabricated in a CMOS foundry process and as a result our model is useful for design of silicon photonic waveguide devices.
Generation of photon pairs from compact, manufacturable and inexpensive silicon (Si) photonic devices at room temperature may help develop practical applications of quantum photonics. An important characteristic of photon-pair generation is the two-photon joint spectral intensity (JSI), which describes the frequency correlations of the photon pair. In particular, heralded single-photon generation requires uncorrelated photons, rather than the highly anti-correlated photons conventionally obtained under continuous-wave (CW) pumping. Recent attempts to achieve such a factorizable JSI have used s…
We numerically studied the required conditions for achieving a memory operation based on Kerr bistability in the presence of the thermo-optic effect in silicon nitride microring cavity systems. By comparing a side-coupled system and an add-drop system, we found that the latter is needed to realize obtain Kerr bistable operation. In addition, we show the coupling coefficient range in which the memory operation does not suffer from the thermo-optic effect.
On-chip measurement of thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) of samples along with on-chip temperature measurements can be used to compensate for thermal fluctuation induced noise in refractometry using integrated photonic sensors. In this article we demonstrate a device design and describe the method to extract TOCs of liquid samples using resonant wavelength shifts of a silicon microring resonator. The TOCs of three standard fluids; De-ionized water, Ethanol and Isopropanol, were determined using our sensor and show a good agreement with values reported in literature. A mechanism for tracking of on…
Silicon photonics promises to alleviate the bandwidth bottleneck of modern day computing systems. But silicon photonic devices have the fundamental problem of being highly sensitive to ambient temperature fluctuations due to the high thermo-optic (TO) coefficient of silicon. Most of the approaches proposed to date to overcome this problem either require significant power consumption or incorporate materials which are not CMOS-compatible. Here we demonstrate a new class of optical devices which are passively temperature compensated, based on tailoring the optical mode confinement in silicon wav…
We report a tunable optical filter based on phase change material $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ embedded in a silicon microring resonator. The high thermo-optic coefficient of $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ in amorphous phase enables tuning of resonance wavelength in broad range with a very small active volume. The low-loss indium-tin-oxide electrodes are employed to induce Joule heating in $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$-Si active waveguide region. The electrically induced heating in the active region alters the effective refractive index of hybrid microring resulting in a wavelength tuning of 1.04 nm for an applied volta…
We design, fabricate, and experimentally demonstrate a compact thermo-optic gate switch comprising a 3.78 um-long coupled L0-type photonic crystalmicrocavities on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. A nanohole is inserted in the center of each individual L0 photonic crystalmicrocavity. Coupling between identical microcavities gives rise to bonding and anti-bonding states of the coupled photonic molecules. The coupled photonic crystalmicrocavities are numerically simulated and experimentally verified with a 6 nm-wide flat-bottom resonance in its transmission spectrum, which enables wider operatio…
We report measurements of time-frequency entangled photon pairs and heralded single photons at 1550~nm wavelengths generated using a microring resonator pumped optically by a diode laser. Along with a high spectral brightness of pair generation, the conventional metrics used to describe performance, such as Coincidences-to-Accidentals Ratio (CAR), conditional self-correlation [$g^{(2)}(0)$], two-photon energy-time {F}ranson interferometric visibility etc. are shown to reach a high-performance regime not yet achieved by silicon photonics, and attained previously only by crystal, glass and fiber…
The use of the Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) platform has been prominent for realizing CMOS-compatible, high-performance photonic integrated circuits (PICs). But in recent years, the silicon-nitride-on-silicon-dioxide (SiN-on-SiO$_2$) platform has garnered increasing interest as an alternative to the SOI platform for realizing high-performance PICs. This is because of its several beneficial properties over the SOI platform, such as low optical losses, high thermo-optic stability, broader wavelength transparency range, and high tolerance to fabrication-process variations. However, SiN-on-SiO$_2$ b…

All-optical devices are essential for next generation ultrafast, ultralow-power and ultrahigh bandwidth information processing systems. Silicon microring resonators (SiMRR) provide a versatile platform for all-optical switching and CMOS-compatible computing, with added advantages of high Q-factor, tunability, compactness, cascadability and scalability. A detailed theoretical analysis of ultrafast all-optical switching 2 x 2 SiMRRs has been carried out incorporating the effects of two photon absorption induced free-carrier injection and thermo optic effect. The results have been used to design …
Reconfigurability of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has become increasingly important due to the growing demands for electronic-photonic systems on a chip driven by emerging applications, including neuromorphic computing, quantum information, and microwave photonics. Success in these fields usually requires highly scalable photonic switching units as essential building blocks. Current photonic switches, however, mainly rely on materials with weak, volatile thermo-optic or electro-optic modulation effects, resulting in a large footprint and high energy consumption. As a promising alternati…

Integrated quantum photonics, which allows for the development and implementation of chip-scale devices, is recognized as a key enabling technology on the road towards scalable quantum networking schemes. However, many state-of-the-art integrated quantum photonics demonstrations still require the coupling of light to external photodetectors. On-chip silicon single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) provide a viable solution as they can be seamlessly integrated with photonic components, and operated with high efficiencies and low dark counts at temperatures achievable with thermoelectric cooling. …
