An array of ring resonators specifically designed can perform as a topological insulator. We conduct simulations using both Tight-Binding Model (TBM) and Transfer Matrix Method (TMM) to analyze the transport properties of such optical structure, verifying the presence of robust topological edge states which is immune to disorder and defect. We have also made a comparison between these two methods, of which results suggesting that TBM is only applicable under weakly-coupling condition while TMM is more rigorous. Finally we compared the structure with common microring array and coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) to demonstrate that it has desired transmission properties with wide and flat spectral response.
We report on coupling between semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (s-SWNT) photoluminescence and silicon microring resonators. Polyfluorene extracted s-SWNT deposited on such resonators exhibit sharp emission peaks, due to interaction with the cavity modes of the microring resonators. Ring resonators with radius of 5 μm and 10 μm were used, reaching quality factors up to 4000 in emission. These are among the highest values reported for carbon nanotubes coupled with an integrated cavity on silicon platform, which open up the possibility to build s-SWNT based efficient light source on si…
The wavelength selective linear absorption in communication C-band is investigated in CMOS-processed PECVD silicon nitride rings. In the overcoupled region, the linear absorption loss lowers the on-resonance transmission of a ring resonator and increases its overall quality factor. Both the linear absorption and ring quality factor are maximized near 1520 nm. The direct heating by phonon absorption leads to thermal optical bistable switching in PECVD silicon nitride based microring resonators. We calibrate the linear absorption rate in the microring resonator by measuring its transmission line…
The intensity buildup of light inside a lossy microring resonator can be used to enhance the generation of squeezed states via spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). In this work, we model the generation of squeezed light in a microring resonator that is pumped with a Gaussian pulse via a side-coupled channel waveguide. We theoretically determine the optimum pump pulse duration and ring-to-channel coupling constant to minimize the quadrature noise (maximize the squeezing) in the ring for a fixed input pump energy. We derive approximate analytic expressions for the optimal coupling and p…
We demonstrate that linear absorption coefficient (LAC) of a graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide (GSHW) is determined by the optical transmission spectra of a graphene coated symmetrically coupled add-drop silicon microring resonator (SC-ADSMR), of which the value is around 0.23 dB/um. In contrast to the traditional cut-back method, the measured results are not dependent on the coupling efficiency of the fiber tip and the waveguide. Moreover, precision evaluation of graphene coated silicon microring resonator (SMR) is crucial for the optoelectronic devices targeting for compact footprint and low…
A new category of optical microring resonator, which is analogous to the Möbius strip, is proposed. The "Möbius" microring resonator allows the conversion between modes with different polarizations in the ring and light must circulate two cycles to be converted back to the original polarization status, which is similar to a Möbius strip. This topology structure of polarization leads to the free spectral range be half of that corresponds to the cavity round trip. The eigenmodes of this microring are hybridizations of different polarizations and the breaking of the rotation invariance of the rin…
We analyze fast and slow light transmission in a zig-zag microring resonator chain. This novel device permits the operation in both regimes. In the superluminal case, a new ubiquitous light transmission effect is found whereby the input optical pulse is reproduced in an almost simultaneous manner at the various system outputs. When the input carrier is tuned to a different frequency, the system permits to slow down the propagating optical signal. Between these two extreme cases, the relative delay can be tuned within a broad range.
We demonstrate experimentally that stable single longitudinal mode operation can be readily achieved in PT-symmetric arrangements of coupled microring resonators. Whereas any active resonator is in principle capable of displaying single-wavelength operation, selective breaking of PT-symmetry can be utilized to systematically enhance the maximum achievable gain of this mode, even if a large number of competing longitudinal or transverse resonator modes fall within the amplification bandwidth of the inhomogeneously broadened active medium. This concept is robust with respect to fabrication toler…
The influence of Raman scattering and higher order dispersions on solitons and frequency comb generation in silica microring resonators is investigated. The Raman effect introduces a threshold value in the resonator quality factor above which the frequency locked solitons can not exist and, instead, a rich dynamics characterized by generation of self-frequency shift- ing solitons and dispersive waves is observed. A mechanism of broadening of the Cherenkov radiation through Hopf instability of the frequency locked solitons is also reported.
Microring resonators, as a fundamental building block of photonic integrated circuits, have been well developed into numerous functional devices, whose performances are strongly determined by microring's resonance lineshapes. We propose a compact structure to reliably realize Lorentzian, Fano, and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance lineshapes in a microring. By simply inserting two air-holes in the side-coupled waveguide of a microring, a Fabry-Perot (FP) resonance is involved to couple with microring's resonant modes, showing Lorentzian, Fano, and EIT lineshapes over one…
In order to overcome the challenge of obtaining high modulation depth due to weak graphene-light interaction, a graphene-on-silicon nitride (SiNx) microring resonator based on graphene's gate-tunable optical conductivity is proposed and studied. Geometrical parameters of graphene-on-SiNx waveguide are systematically analyzed and optimized, yielding a loss tunability of 0.04 dB/μm and an effective index variation of 0.0022. We explicitly study the interaction between graphene and a 40-μm-radius microring resonator, where electro-absorptive and electro-refractive modulation are both taken into a…
Aluminum nitride has been shown to possess both strong Kerr nonlinearity and electro-optic Pockels effect. By combining these two effects, here we demonstrate on-chip reversible on/off switching of the optical frequency comb generated by an aluminum nitride microring resonator. We optimize the design of gating electrodes and the underneath resonator structure to effectively apply electric field without increasing the optical loss. The switching of the comb is monitored by measuring one of the frequency comb peaks while varying the electric field. The controlled comb electro-optic response is i…
We discuss the analytical temporal response of a microring resonator excited through a bus waveguide by an optical rectangular pulse. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations illustrate the analytical solution and help in understanding the meaning of the different coupling regimes. In addition, we show that the temporal dynamics allows determing the coupling regime while the commonly used spectral characterization in the stationary regime does not. We also take advantage of the simulation to highlight the phase shift between the input and the output signals in the different coupling re…
Single mode lasing is experimentally demonstrated in a transversely multi-moded InP-based semiconductor microring arrangement. In this system, mode discrimination is attained by judiciously utilizing the exceptional points in a parity-time (PT) symmetric double microring configuration. The proposed scheme is versatile, robust to small fabrication errors, and enables the device to operate in a stable manner considerably above threshold while maintaining spatial and spectral purity. The results presented here pave the way towards a new class of chip-scale semiconductor lasers that utilize gain/l…
Two microring resonators, one with gain and one with loss, coupled to each other and to a bus waveguide, create an effective non-Hermitian potential for light propagating in the waveguide. Due to geometry, coupling for each microring resonator yields two counter-propagating modes with equal frequencies. We show that such a system enables implementation of many types of scattering peculiarities, which are either the second or fourth order. The spectral singularities separate parameter regions where the spectrum is either pure real or else comprises complex eigenvalues; hence, they represent the…
Thin-film lithium niobate is an attractive integrated photonics platform due to its low optical loss and favorable optical nonlinear and electro-optic properties. However, in applications such as second harmonic generation, frequency comb generation, and microwave-to-optics conversion, the device performance is strongly impeded by the photorefractive effect inherent in thin-films. In this paper, we show that the dielectric cladding on lithium niobate microring resonator has a significant influence on the photorefractive effect. By removing the dielectric cladding layer, the photorefractive eff…
We report single plasmon generation with a self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dot embedded in a plasmonic microring resonator. The plasmonic cavity based on a GaAs microring is defined on an atomically-smooth silver surface. We fabricated this structure with the help of transfer printing, which enables the pick-and-place assembly of the complicated, heterogeneous three dimensional stack. We show that a high-order surface-plasmon-polariton transverse mode mediates efficient coupling between the InAs/GaAs quantum dots and the plasmonic cavity, paving the way for developing plasmonic quantum light …
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has been demonstrated in silicon waveguides in recent years. However, due to the weak interaction between photons and acoustic phonons in these waveguides, long interaction length is typically necessary. Here, we experimentally show that forward stimulated Brillouin scattering in a short interaction length of a 20 um radius silicon microring resonator could give 1.2 dB peak gain at only 10mW coupled pump power. The experimental results demonstrate that both optical and acoustic modes can have efficient interaction in a short interaction length. The observe…
Microring resonators made from silicon are becoming a popular microscale device format for generating photon pairs at telecommunications wavelengths at room temperature. In compact devices with a footprint less than $5\times 10^{-4}$ mm$^2$, we demonstrate pair generation using only a few microwatts of average pump power. We discuss the role played by important parameters such as the loss, group-velocity dispersion and the ring-waveguide coupling coefficient in finding the optimum operating point for silicon microring pair generation. Silicon photonics can be fabricated using deep ultraviolet …
We generate photon pairs in a-Si:H microrings using a CW pump, and find the Kerr coefficient of a-Si:H to be $3.73 \pm 0.25 \times 10^{-17}m^2/W$. By measuring the Q factor with coupled power we find that the loss in the a-Si:H micro-rings scales linearly with power, and therefore cannot originate from two photon absorption. Theoretically comparing a-Si:H and c-Si micro-ring pair sources, we show that the high Kerr coefficient of this sample of a-Si:H is best utilized for microrings with Q factors below $10^3$, but that for higher Q factor devices the photon pair rate is greatly suppressed due…
A path within the parameter space of detuning and pump power is demonstrated in order to obtain a single cavity soliton (CS) with certainty in SiN microring resonators in the anomalous dispersion regime. Once the single CS state is reached, it is possible to continue a path to compress it, broadening the corresponding single free spectral range (FSR) Kerr frequency comb. The first step to achieve this goal is to identify the stable regions in the parameter space via numerical simulations of the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE). Later, using this identification, we define a path from the stable m…
We demonstrate voltage-tunable thermo-optic bi- and tri-stability in silicon photonic microring resonators with lateral p-i-n junctions and present a technique for characterizing the thermo-optic transient response of integrated optical resonators. Our method for thermo-optic transient response measurement is applicable to any integrated photonics platform and uses standard equipment. Thermo-optic relaxation in encapsulated waveguides is found to be approximately logarithmic in time, consistent with the analytic solution for 2D heat diffusion. We develop a model for thermo-optic microring mult…
We report on four-wave mixing in a silicon microring resonator using a self-pumping scheme instead of an external laser. The ring resonator is inserted in an external-loop cavity with a fibered semiconductor amplifier as a source of gain. The silicon microring acts as a filter and we observe lasing in one of the microring's resonances. We study correlations between signal and idler generated beams using a Joint Spectral Density experiment.
We demonstrate lasing in arrays of microring resonators with underlying para-Fermi symmetry. The properties of the algebra allow the analytic prediction of propagation constants and normal modes of an array of passive resonators that show the optical analogue of a zero-energy mode that is its own chiral pair. The rest of the normal modes in the linear model form chiral pairs that are evenly distributed around the pseudo zero-energy mode. We use this information to construct a class-B laser model where even and odd sites are driven with different strength in a pattern following para-Fermi algeb…
On-chip frequency comb generations enable compact broadband sources for spectroscopic sensing and precision spectroscopy. Recent microcomb studies focus on infrared spectral regime and have difficulty in accessing visible regime. Here, we demonstrate comb-like visible frequency line generation through second, third harmonic, and sum frequency conversion of a Kerr comb within a high Q aluminum nitride microring resonator pumped by a single telecom laser. The strong power enhancement, in conjunction with the unique combination of Pockels and Kerr optical nonlinearity of aluminum nitride, leads t…

Graphene opens up for novel optoelectronic applications thanks to its high carrier mobility, ultra-large absorption bandwidth, and extremely fast material response. In particular, the opportunity to control optoelectronic properties through tuning of Fermi level enables electro-optical modulation, optical-optical switching, and other optoelectronics applications. However, achieving a high modulation depth remains a challenge because of the modest graphene-light interaction in the graphene-silicon devices, typically, utilizing only a monolayer or few layers of graphene. Here, we comprehensively…
We demonstrate an ultralow loss monolithic integrated lithium niobate photonic platform consisting of dry-etched subwavelength waveguides. We show microring resonators with a quality factor of 10$^7$ and waveguides with propagation loss as low as 2.7 dB/m.
Light trapping and radiation process from linear reciprocal photonic resonators is one of the fundamental processes in optical science and engineering. Recently, the concept of coherent virtual absorption (CVA) of light was introduced and investigated for planar and cylindrical optical structures. The key feature of CVA is that by engineering the time-dependence of the excitation waveform, one can temporarily store all the input energy into the optical structure without any leakage. Here we further explore this novel concept in integrated photonic setups made of microring resonators. By using …
Silicon photonics promises to alleviate the bandwidth bottleneck of modern day computing systems. But silicon photonic devices have the fundamental problem of being highly sensitive to ambient temperature fluctuations due to the high thermo-optic (TO) coefficient of silicon. Most of the approaches proposed to date to overcome this problem either require significant power consumption or incorporate materials which are not CMOS-compatible. Here we demonstrate a new class of optical devices which are passively temperature compensated, based on tailoring the optical mode confinement in silicon wav…
Generation of photon pairs from compact, manufacturable and inexpensive silicon (Si) photonic devices at room temperature may help develop practical applications of quantum photonics. An important characteristic of photon-pair generation is the two-photon joint spectral intensity (JSI), which describes the frequency correlations of the photon pair. In particular, heralded single-photon generation requires uncorrelated photons, rather than the highly anti-correlated photons conventionally obtained under continuous-wave (CW) pumping. Recent attempts to achieve such a factorizable JSI have used s…
We demonstrate that n-doped resistive heaters in silicon waveguides show photoconductive effects with high responsivities. These photoconductive heaters, integrated into microring resonator (MRR)-based filters, were used to automatically tune and stabilize the filter's resonance wavelength to the input laser's wavelength. This is achieved without requiring dedicated defect implantations, additional material depositions, dedicated photodetectors, or optical power tap-outs. Automatic wavelength stabilization of first-order MRR and second-order series-coupled MRR filters is experimentally demonst…
Microring resonators are critical photonic components used in filtering, sensing and nonlinear applications. To date, the development of high performance microring resonators in LNOI has been limited by the sidewall angle, roughness and etch depth of fabricated rib waveguides. We present large free spectral range microring resonators patterned via electron beam lithography in high-index contrast $Z$-cut LNOI. Our microring resonators achieve an FSR greater than 5 nm for ring radius of 30 $μ$m and a large 3 dB resonance bandwidth. We demonstrate 3 pm/V electro-optic tuning of a 70 $μ$m-radius r…
We utilize cross-phase modulation to observe all-optical switching in microring resonators fabricated with hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). Using 2.7-ps pulses from a mode-locked fiber laser in the telecom C-band, we observe optical switching of a cw telecom-band probe with full-width at half-maximum switching times of 14.8 ps, using approximately 720 fJ of energy deposited in the microring. In comparison with telecom-band optical switching in undoped crystalline silicon microrings, a-Si:H exhibits substantially higher switching speeds due to reduced impact of free-carrier processes.
We report a circuit cavity optomechanical system in which a nanomechanical resonator is adiabatically embedded inside an optical ring resonator with ultralow transition loss. The nanomechanical device forms part of the top layer of a horizontal silicon slot ring resonator, which enables dispersive coupling to the dielectric substrate via a tapered nanogap. Our measurements show nearly uncompromised optical quality factors (Q) after the release of the mechanical beam.
The temporal dynamics of integrated silicon resonators has been modeled using a set of equations coupling the internal energy, the temperature and the free carrier population. Owing to its simplicity, Newton's law of cooling is the traditional choice for describing the thermal evolution of such systems. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally prove that this can be inadequate in monolithic planar devices, leading to inaccurate predictions. A new equation, that we train to reproduce the correct temperature behaviour, is introduced to fix the discrepancies with the experimental results…
We describe a new approach for on-chip optical non-reciprocity which makes use of strong optomechanical interaction in microring resonators. By optically pumping the ring resonator in one direction, the optomechanical coupling is only enhanced in that direction, and consequently, the system exhibits a non-reciprocal response. For different configurations, this system can function either as an optical isolator or a coherent non-reciprocal phase shifter. We show that the operation of such a device on the level of single-photon could be achieved with existing technology.
The method of Direct Digital Drive is applied to a microring resonator. The microring resonator is thus controlled by a segmented set of electrodes each of which is driven by binary (digital) signal. Digital linearization is performed with the aid of digital memory lookup table. The method is applied to a single microring modulator to provide an M-bit digital-toanalog converter (DAC), which may also be viewed as an M-level pulse amplitude modulator (M-PAM). It is shown, by means of simulation, that a 4-bit DAC can achieve an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 3.74bits. Applying the same method…
In this paper, a new design of optical delay line based on coupled ring resonators in photonic crystals is proposed and analyzed by means of numerical simulation in CST Microwave Studio. The performance of the proposed photonic crystal ring resonator (PhCRR) based coupled resonant optical waveguide (CROW) is compared to: point-defect cavity based coupled cavity waveguides (CCW) in photonic crystal. microring resonator (MRR) based CROW. The suggested design addresses compactness issues of the MRR CROW while offering normalized delay values better than CCW and comparable to MRR CROW. The PhCRR C…
We develop a general Hamiltonian treatement of spontaneous four-wave mixing in a microring resonator side-coupled to a channel waveguide. The effect of scattering losses in the ring is included, as well as parasitic nonlinear effects including self- and cross-phase modulation. A procedure for computing the output of such a system for arbitrary parameters and pump states is presented. For the limit of weak pumping an expression for the joint spectral intensity of generated photon pairs, as well as the singles-to-coincidences ratio, is derived.
Circularly polarized light plays a key role in many applications including spectroscopy, microscopy, and control of atomic systems. Particularly in the latter, high polarization purity is often required. Integrated technologies for atomic control are progressing rapidly, but while integrated photonics can generate fields with pure linear polarization, integrated generation of highly pure circular polarization states has not been addressed. Here, we show that waveguide microring resonators, perturbed with azimuthal gratings and thereby emitting beams carrying optical orbital angular momentum, c…
We propose and analyze an on-chip all-optical dynamical tuning scheme for coupled nonlinear resonators employing a single control beam injected in parallel with a signal beam. We show that nonlinear Kerr response can be used to dynamically switch the spectral properties between "dark-state" and electromagnetically-induced transparency configurations. Such scheme can be realized in integrated optical applications for pulse trapping and delaying.

Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in circularly symmetric optical microresonators exhibit integer quantized angular momentum numbers due to the boundary condition imposed by the geometry. Here, we show that incorporating a photonic crystal pattern in an integrated microring can result in WGMs with fractional optical angular momentum. By choosing the photonic crystal periodicity to open a photonic bandgap with a band-edge momentum lying between that of two WGMs of the unperturbed ring, we observe hybridized WGMs with half-integer quantized angular momentum numbers ($m \in \mathbb{Z}$ + 1/2). We report a tunable optical filter based on phase change material $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ embedded in a silicon microring resonator. The high thermo-optic coefficient of $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ in amorphous phase enables tuning of resonance wavelength in broad range with a very small active volume. The low-loss indium-tin-oxide electrodes are employed to induce Joule heating in $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$-Si active waveguide region. The electrically induced heating in the active region alters the effective refractive index of hybrid microring resulting in a wavelength tuning of 1.04 nm for an applied volta…
Defect centers are promising candidates for waveguide-integrated silicon light sources. We demonstrate microresonator- and waveguide-coupled photoluminescence from silicon W~centers. Microphotoluminescence measurements indicate wavelengths on-resonance with resonator modes are preferentially coupled to an adjacent waveguide. Quality factors of at least 5,300 are measured, and free spectral ranges closely match expectation. The W~center phonon sideband can be used as a spectral diagnostic for a broader range waveguide-based devices on cryogenic silicon photonic platforms.
Hopf insulators are topological insulators whose topological behavior arises from the nontrivial mapping from a 3D sphere to a 2D sphere, known as the Hopf map. The Hopf map, typically encountered in the study of spinor and skyrmion systems, is classified topologically by an integer invariant called the Hopf index. Here we show that due to the periodic circulation of light inside each microring, a 2D lattice of microring resonators can emulate an $N$-band photonic Hopf insulator with nontrivial Hopf index. In particular, we show by numerical computation and direct analytical proof that the $N$…
