Emission substructures in gas and dust are common in protoplanetary disks. Such substructures can be linked to planet formation or planets themselves. We explore the observed gas substructures in AS 209 using thermochemical modeling with RAC2D and high-spatial resolution data from the Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales(MAPS) program. The observations of C$^{18}$O J=2-1 emission exhibit a strong depression at 88 au overlapping with the positions of multiple gaps in millimeter dust continuum emission. We find that the observed CO column density is consistent with either gas surface-density perturbations or chemical processing, while C$_2$H column density traces changes in the C/O ratio rather than the H$_2$ gas surface density. However, the presence of a massive planet (> 0.2 M$_{Jup}$) would be required to account for this level of gas depression, which conflicts with constraints set by the dust emission and the pressure profile measured by gas kinematics. Based on our models, we infer that a local decrease of CO abundance is required to explain the observed structure in CO, dominating over a possible gap-carving planet present and its effect on the H$_2$ surface density. This paper is part of the MAPS special issue of the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series.

The ALMA Survey of Gas Evolution of PROtoplanetary Disks (AGE-PRO): VIII. The impact of external photoevaporation on disk masses and radii in Upper Scorpius
We present molecular line observations of 13CO and C18O J=3-2, CN N = 3 - 2, and CS J=7-6 lines in the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya at a high spatial resolution of ~9 au (angular resolution of 0.15''), using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. A possible gas gap is found in the deprojected radial intensity profile of the integrated C18O line around a disk radius of ~58 au, slightly beyond the location of the au-scale dust clump at ~52 au, which resembles predictions from hydrodynamic simulations of planet-disk interaction. In addition, we construct models for the physical an…
Context. Multi-wavelength observations are indispensable in studying disk geometry and dust evolution processes in protoplanetary disks. Aims. We aimed to construct a 3-dimensional model of HD 163296 capable of reproducing simultaneously new observations of the disk surface in scattered light with the SPHERE instrument and thermal emission continuum observations of the disk midplane with ALMA. We want to determine why the SED of HD 163296 is intermediary between the otherwise well-separated group I and group II Herbig stars. Methods. The disk was modelled using the Monte Carlo radiative transf…
The 1.33 mm survey of protoplanetary discs in the Taurus molecular cloud found annular gaps and rings to be common in extended sources (>~55 au), when their 1D visibility distributions were fit parametrically. We first demonstrate the advantages and limitations of nonparametric visibility fits for data at the survey's 0.12" resolution. Then we use the nonparametric model in Frankenstein ('frank') to identify new substructure in three compact and seven extended sources. Among the new features we identify three trends: a higher occurrence rate of substructure in the survey's compact discs than p…
CO is widely used as a tracer of molecular gas. However, there is now mounting evidence that gas phase carbon is depleted in the disk around TW Hya. Previous efforts to quantify this depletion have been hampered by uncertainties regarding the radial thermal structure in the disk. Here we present resolved ALMA observations of 13CO 3-2, C18O 3-2, 13CO 6-5, and C18O 6-5 emission in TW Hya, which allow us to derive radial gas temperature and gas surface density profiles, as well as map the CO abundance as a function of radius. These observations provide a measurement of the surface CO snowline at …
We present a new velocity-resolved survey of 2.9 $μ$m spectra of hot H$_2$O and OH gas emission from protoplanetary disks, obtained with CRIRES at the VLT ($Δv \sim$ 3 km s$^{-1}$). With the addition of archival Spitzer-IRS spectra, this is the most comprehensive spectral dataset of water vapor emission from disks ever assembled. We provide line fluxes at 2.9-33 $μ$m that probe from disk radii of $\sim0.05$ au out to the region across the water snow line. With a combined dataset for 55 disks, we find a new correlation between H$_2$O line fluxes and the radius of CO gas emission as measured in …
We present new constraints on gas-phase C, N, and O abundances in the molecular layer of the IM Lup protoplanetary disk. Building on previous physical and chemical modeling of this disk, we use new ALMA observations of C$_2$H to constrain the C/O ratio in the molecular layer to be $\sim0.8$, i.e., higher than the solar value of $\sim0.54$. We use archival ALMA observations of HCN and H$^{13}$CN to show that no depletion of N is required (assuming an interstellar abundance of $7.5\times10^{-5}$ per H). These results suggest that an appreciable fraction of O is sequestered in water ice in large …
We present a detailed analysis of the high-angular resolution (0.''037, corresponding to 5 au) observations of the 1.25 mm continuum and $^{12}$CO $2-1$ emission from the disk around the T Tauri star AS 209. AS 209 hosts one of the most unusual disks from the DSHARP sample, the first high angular resolution ALMA survey of disks (Andrews et al. 2018), as nearly all of the emission can be explained with concentric Gaussian rings. In particular, the dust emission consists of a series of narrow and closely spaced rings in the inner $\sim$60 au, two well-separated bright rings in the outer disk, ce…

We present the first high-resolution sub-mm survey of both dust and gas for a large population of protoplanetary disks. Characterizing fundamental properties of protoplanetary disks on a statistical level is critical to understanding how disks evolve into the diverse exoplanet population. We use ALMA to survey 89 protoplanetary disks around stars with $M_{\ast}>0.1~M_{\odot}$ in the young (1--3~Myr), nearby (150--200~pc) Lupus complex. Our observations cover the 890~$μ$m continuum and the $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O 3--2 lines. We use the sub-mm continuum to constrain $M_{\rm dust}$ to a few Marti…
PDS 70b is the most robustly detected young planet imaged in the gap of a transition disk so far, found at a separation of ~195 mas (~22 au) from its host star and at a position angle of about 155 deg. This system is therefore a unique laboratory to characterize the properties of young planetary systems at the stage of their formation. We aim to trace direct and indirect imprints of PDS 70b on the gas and dust emission of the circumstellar disk in order to study the properties of this ~5 Myr young planetary system. We obtained ALMA band 7 observations of PDS 70 in dust continuum and $^{12}CO$ …
The combination of high resolution and sensitivity offered by ALMA is revolutionizing our understanding of protoplanetary discs, as their bulk gas and dust distributions can be studied independently. In this paper we present resolved ALMA observations of the continuum emission ($λ=1.3$ mm) and CO isotopologues ($^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O $J=2-1$) integrated intensity from the disc around the nearby ($d = 162$ pc), intermediate mass ($M_{\star}=1.67\,M_{\odot}$) pre-main-sequence star CQ Tau. The data show an inner depression in continuum, and in both $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O emission. We e…
The C/O-ratio as traced with C$_2$H emission in protoplanetary disks is fundamental for constraining the formation mechanisms of exoplanets and our understanding of volatile depletion in disks, but current C$_2$H observations show an apparent bimodal distribution which is not well understood, indicating that the C/O distribution is not described by a simple radial dependence. The transport of icy pebbles has been suggested to alter the local elemental abundances in protoplanetary disks, through settling, drift and trapping in pressure bumps resulting in a depletion of volatiles in the surface …
The widespread rings and gaps seen in the dust continuum in protoplanetary disks are sometimes accompanied by similar substructures seen in molecular line emission. One example is the outer gap at 100 au in AS 209, which shows that the H$_{13}$CO$^+$ and C$_{18}$O emission intensities decrease along with the continuum in the gap, while the DCO$^+$ emission increases inside the gap. We aim to study the behavior of DCO$^+$/H$_{13}$CO$^+$ and DCO$^+$/HCO$^+$ ratios in protoplanetary disk gaps assuming the two scenarios: the gas depletion follows the dust depletion and only the dust is depleted. W…
Understanding the temperature structure of protoplanetary disks is key to interpreting observations, predicting the physical and chemical evolution of the disk, and modeling planet formation processes. In this study, we constrain the two-dimensional thermal structure of the disk around Herbig Ae star HD 163296. Using the thermo-chemical code RAC2D, we derive a thermal structure that reproduces spatially resolved ALMA observations (~0.12 arcsec (13 au) - 0.25 arcsec (26 au)) of CO J = 2-1, 13CO J = 1-0, 2-1, C18O J = 1-0, 2-1, and C17O J = 1-0, the HD J = 1-0 flux upper limit, the spectral ener…
We investigate the dust and gas distribution in the disk around HD 142527 based on ALMA observations of dust continuum, 13CO(3-2), and C18O(3-2) emission. The disk shows strong azimuthal asymmetry in the dust continuum emission, while gas emission is more symmetric. In this paper, we investigate how gas and dust are distributed in the dust-bright northern part of the disk and in the dust-faint southern part. We construct two axisymmetric disk models. One reproduces the radial profiles of the continuum and the velocity moments 0 and 1 of CO lines in the north and the other reproduces those in t…
Pre-stellar cores represent the initial conditions in the process of star and planet formation. Their low temperatures ($<$10 K) allow the formation of thick icy dust mantles, which will be partially preserved in the future protoplanetary disks, ultimately affecting the chemical composition of planetary systems. Previous observations have shown that carbon- and oxygen-bearing species, in particular CO, are heavily depleted in pre-stellar cores due to the efficient molecular freeze-out onto the surface of cold dust grains. However, N-bearing species such as NH$_3$ and, in particular, its deuter…
The volatile composition of a planet is determined by the inventory of gas and ice in the parent disk. The volatile chemistry in the disk is expected to evolve over time, though this evolution is poorly constrained observationally. We present ALMA observations of C18O, C2H, and the isotopologues H13CN, HC15N, and DCN towards five Class 0/I disk candidates. Combined with a sample of fourteen Class II disks presented in Bergner et al. (2019b), this data set offers a view of volatile chemical evolution over the disk lifetime. Our estimates of C18O abundances are consistent with a rapid depletion …
We report ALMA Cycle 2 observations of 230 GHz (1.3 mm) dust continuum emission, and $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O J = 2-1 line emission, from the Upper Scorpius transitional disk [PZ99] J160421.7-213028, with an angular resolution of ~0".25 (35 AU). Armed with these data and existing H-band scattered light observations, we measure the size and depth of the disk's central cavity, and the sharpness of its outer edge, in three components: sub-$μ$m-sized "small" dust traced by scattered light, millimeter-sized "big" dust traced by the millimeter continuum, and gas traced by line emission. B…
