Increasing evidence suggests that, similar to their low-mass counterparts, high-mass stars form through a disk-mediated accretion process. At the same time, formation of high-mass stars still necessitates high accretion rates, and hence, high gas densities, which in turn can cause disks to become unstable against gravitational fragmentation. We study the kinematics and fragmentation of the disk around the high-mass star forming region AFGL 2591-VLA 3 which was hypothesized to be fragmenting based on the observations that show multiple outflow directions. We use a new set of high-resolution (0.19 arcsec) IRAM/NOEMA observations at 843 micron towards VLA 3 which allow us to resolve its disk, characterize the fragmentation, and study its kinematics. In addition to the 843 micron continuum emission, our spectral setup targets warm dense gas and outflow tracers such as HCN, HC$_3$N and SO$_2$, as well as vibrationally excited HCN lines. The high resolution continuum and line emission maps reveal multiple fragments with subsolar masses within the inner 1000 AU of VLA 3. Furthermore, the velocity field of the inner disk observed at 843 micron shows a similar behavior to that of the larger scale velocity field studied in the CORE project at 1.37 mm. We present the first observational evidence for disk fragmentation towards AFGL 2591-VLA 3, a source that was thought to be a single high-mass core. While the fragments themselves are low-mass, the rotation of the disk is dominated by the protostar with a mass of 10.3$\pm 1.8~M_{\odot}$. These data also show that NOEMA Band 4 can obtain the highest currently achievable spatial resolution at (sub-)mm wavelengths in observations of strong northern sources.
We present multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) H$_2$O maser observations toward the massive young stellar objects (YSOs) VLA 2 and VLA 3 in the star-forming region AFGL 2591. Through these observations, we have extended the study of the evolution of the masers towards these objects up to a time span of $\sim$ 10 yrs, measuring their radial velocities and proper motions. The H$_2$O masers in VLA 3, the most massive YSO in AFGL 2591 ($\sim$ 30--40~M$_{\odot}$), are grouped within projected distances of $\lesssim$ 40 mas ($\lesssim$ 130 AU) from VLA 3. In contrast to other H$_2$O masers i…
We present multi-wavelength data to investigate the physical properties and fragmentation of AFGL 333- Ridge. A statistical analysis of velocity dispersion indicates that turbulence is the dominant motion in the ridge. However, the linear mass density (1124.0 M/pc) of AFGL 333-Ridge far exceeds its critical value of 406.5 M/pc, suggesting that additional motions are required to prevent the filament radial collapse. Using the getsources algorithm, we identified 14 cores from the Herschel maps, including two protostellar cores and 12 starless cores. All of these starless cores are gravitationall…
[Context] Recent detections of disks around young high-mass stars support the idea of massive star formation through accretion rather than coalescence, but the detailed kinematics in the equatorial region of the disk candidates is not well known, which limits our understanding of the accretion process. [Aims] This paper explores the kinematics of the gas around a young massive star with millimeter-wave interferometry to improve our understanding of the formation of massive stars though accretion. [Methods] We use Plateau de Bure interferometric images to probe the environment of the nearby (~1…
We present high angular resolution observations (0.5"x0.3") carried out with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) toward the AFGL2591 high-mass star forming region. Our SMA images reveal a clear chemical segregation within the AFGL2591 VLA 3 hot core, where different molecular species (Type I, II and III) appear distributed in three concentric shells. This is the first time that such a chemical segregation is ever reported at linear scales <3000 AU within a hot core. While Type I species (H2S and 13CS) peak at the AFGL2591 VLA 3 protostar, Type II molecules (HC3N, OCS, SO and SO2) show a double-peake…
This paper aims to investigate the hypothesis that the embedded luminous star AFGL2591-VLA3 (2.3E5Lsun at 3.33kpc) is forming according to a scaled-up version of a low-mass star formation scenario. We present multi-configuration VLA 3.6cm and 7mm, as well as CARMA C18O and 3mm continuum observations to investigate the morphology and kinematics of the ionized gas, dust, and molecular gas around AFGL2591. We also compare our results to ancillary near-IR images, and model the SED and 2MASS image profiles of AFGL2591 using a dust continuum radiative transfer code. The observed 3.6cm images uncover…
We present Very Large Array (VLA) high resolution observations of the NH3(1,1) and NH3(2,2) molecular transitions towards the high mass star forming region AFGL 437. Our aim was to investigate if the poorly collimated CO molecular outflow previously detected in the region is the result of a projection effect, with no intrinsic bipolarity, as suggested by Gomez et al. We complemented our observations with radio continuum archived data from the VLA at 2 and 3.6 cm, and with unpublished public data at 450 μm taken with Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope…
We have studied the dust density, temperature and velocity distributions of the archetypal massive young stellar object (MYSO) AFGL 2591. Given its high luminosity ($L=2 \times 10^5$ L$_\odot$) and distance ($d=3.3$ kpc), AFGL 2591 has one of the highest $\sqrt{L}/d$ ratio, giving better resolved dust emission than any other MYSO. As such, this paper provides a template on how to use resolved multi-wavelength data and radiative transfer to obtain a well-constrained 2-D axi-symmetric analytic rotating infall model. We show for the first time that the resolved dust continuum emission from Hersch…
We present a detailed observational and modeling study of the hot core VLA 3 in the high-mass star-forming region AFGL 2591, which is a target region of the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) large program CORE. Using NOEMA observations at 1.37 mm with an angular resolution of ~0."42 (1 400 au at 3.33 kpc), we derived the physical and chemical structure of the source. We modeled the observed molecular abundances with the chemical evolution code MUSCLE (MUlti Stage ChemicaL codE). Results. With the kinetic temperature tracers CH3CN and H2CO we observe a temperature distribution with a p…
We present high-resolution (30 mas or 130 au at 4.2 kpc) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations at 1.2 mm of the disc around the forming O-type star AFGL 4176 mm1. The disc (AFGL 4176 mm1-main) has a radius of ~1000 au and contains significant structure, most notably a spiral arm on its redshifted side. We fitted the observed spiral with logarithmic and Archimedean spiral models. We find that both models can describe its structure, but the Archimedean spiral with a varying pitch angle fits its morphology marginally better. As well as signatures of rotation across the disc, w…
Most bipolar outflows are associated with individual young stellar objects and have small opening angles. Here we report the discovery of an extremely wide-angle ($\sim$180$\arcdeg$) bipolar outflow ("EWBO") in a cluster forming region AFGL 5142 from low-velocity emission of the HCN (3-2) and HCO$^{+}$ (3-2) lines. This bipolar outflow is along a north-west to south-east direction with a line-of-sight flow velocity of about 3 km~s$^{-1}$ and is spatially connected to the high-velocity jet-like outflows. It seems to be a collection of low-velocity material entrained by the high-velocity outflow…
We present observations of three Class 0/I protostars (L1157-mm, CB230 IRS1, and L1165-SMM1) using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and observations of two (L1165-SMM1 and CB230 IRS1) with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA). The VLA observations were taken at wavelengths of $λ= 7.3$ mm, 1.4 cm, 3.3 cm, 4.0 cm, and 6.5 cm with a best resolution of $\sim$0\farcs06 (18 AU) at 7.3 mm. The L1165-SMM1 CARMA observations were taken at $λ= 1.3$ mm with a best resolution of $\sim0\farcs3$ (100 AU), and the CB230 IRS1 observations were taken at $λ= 3.4$ mm with…
We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) $λ=$ 0.88 and 1.3 mm broad band observations, and the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations in $\rm{NH_3}$ $(J,K) = (1,1)$ up to $(5,5)$, $\rm{H_2O}$ and $\rm{CH_3OH}$ maser lines toward the two most massive molecular clumps in infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G11.11-0.12. Sensitive high-resolution images reveal hierarchical fragmentation in dense molecular gas from the $\sim 1$ pc clump scale down to $\sim 0.01$ pc condensation scale. At each scale, the mass of the fragments is orders of magnitude larger than the Jeans mass. This is common to all four IRDC …
Commonplace at every evolutionary stage, Multiple Protostellar Systems (MPSs) are thought to be formed through fragmentation, but it is unclear when and how. The youngest MPSs, which have not yet undergone much evolution, provide important constraints to this question. It is then of interest to disentangle early stage MPSs. In this letter we present the results of our work on VLA1623 using our observations and archival data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Our continuum and line observations trace VLA1623's components, outflow and envelope, revealing unexpected characteristics. We construct…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of multiple protostar systems in the Perseus molecular cloud previously detected by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We observed 17 close ($<$600~AU separation) multiple systems at 1.3~mm in continuum and five molecular lines (i.e., \twco, \cateo, \thco, H$_2$CO, SO) to characterize the circum-multiple environments in which these systems are forming. We detect at least one component in the continuum for the 17 multiple systems. In three systems, one companion is not detected, and for two systems the companion…
We present a multiplicity study of all known protostars (94) in the Perseus molecular cloud from a Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) survey at Ka-band (8 mm and 1 cm) and C-band (4 cm and 6.6 cm). The observed sample has a bolometric luminosity range between 0.1 L$_{\odot}$ and $\sim$33 L$_{\odot}$, with a median of 0.7 L$_{\odot}$. This multiplicity study is based on the Ka-band data, having a best resolution of $\sim$0.065" (15 AU) and separations out to $\sim$43" (10000 AU) can be probed. The overall multiplicity fraction (MF) is found to be of 0.40$\pm$0.06 and the companion star fract…
We characterize protostellar multiplicity in the Orion molecular clouds using ALMA 0.87~mm and VLA 9~mm continuum surveys toward 328 protostars. These observations are sensitive to projected spatial separations as small as $\sim$20~au, and we consider source separations up to 10$^4$~au as potential companions. The overall multiplicity fraction (MF) and companion fraction (CF) for the Orion protostars are 0.30$\pm$0.03 and 0.44$\pm$0.03, respectively, considering separations from 20 to 10$^4$~au. The MFs and CFs are corrected for potential contamination by unassociated young stars using a proba…
We report systematic mapping observations of the NH$_{3}$ (1,1) and (2,2) inversion lines towards 62 high-mass star-forming regions using VLA in its D and DnC array configurations. The VLA images cover a spatial dynamic range from 40$"$ to 3$"$, allowing us to trace gas kinematics from $\sim$1 pc scales to $\lesssim$0.1 pc scales. Based on the NH$_3$ morphology and the infrared nebulosity on 1\,pc scales, we categorize three sub-classes in the sample: filaments, hot cores, and NH$_3$ dispersed sources. The ubiquitous gas filaments found on 1 pc scales have a typical width of $\sim$0.1\,pc and …
We present subarcsecond 1.3 mm continuum ALMA observations towards the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 South (OMC-1S) region, down to a spatial resolution of 74 AU, which reveal a total of 31 continuum sources. We also present subarcsecond 7 mm continuum VLA observations of the same region, which allow to further study fragmentation down to a spatial resolution of 40 AU. By applying a Mean Surface Density of Companions method we find a characteristic spatial scale at ~560 AU, and we use this spatial scale to define the boundary of 19 `cores' in OMC-1S as groupings of millimeter sources. We find an add…
Recent observations of young stellar systems with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) are helping to cement the idea that close companion stars form via fragmentation of a gravitationally unstable disk around a protostar early in the star formation process. As the disk grows in mass, it eventually becomes gravitationally unstable and fragments, forming one or more new protostars in orbit with the first at mean separations of 100 astronomical units (AU) or even less. Here we report direct numerical calculations down to scales as …
We present a new high-resolution study of pre-protocluster regions in tracers exclusively probing the coldest and dense gas (NH_2D). The data are used to constrain the chemical, thermal, kinematic, and physical conditions (i.e., densities) in G29.96e and G35.20w. NH_3, NH_2D, and continuum emission were mapped using the VLA, and PdBI. In particular, NH_2D is a unique tracer of cold, precluster gas at high densities, while NH_3 traces both the cold and warm gas of modest-to-high densities. In G29.96e, Spitzer images reveal two massive filaments, one of them in extinction (infrared dark cloud). …
The present work aims at studying the dense gas of the molecular cloud LDN 1287 (L1287), which harbors a double FU Ori system, an energetic molecular outflow and a still-forming cluster of deeply embedded low-mass, young stellar objects, showing a high level of fragmentation. We present optical Halpha and [SII], and VLA NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) observations with an angular resolution of ~3.5''. The observed NH$_3$ spectra have been analyzed with the HfS tool, fitting simultaneously three different velocity components. The NH$_3$ emission from L1287 comes from four different structures: a core as…
Context. ALMA observations at 1.4 mm and 0.2'' (750au) angular resolution of the Main core in the high-mass star forming region G31.41+0.31 have revealed a puzzling scenario: on the one hand, the continuum emission looks very homogeneous and the core appears to undergo solid-body rotation, suggesting a monolithic core stabilized by the magnetic field; on the other hand, rotation and infall speed up toward the core center, where two massive embedded free-free continuum sources have been detected, pointing to an unstable core having undergone fragmentation. Aims. To establish whether the Main co…
We present the results of ALMA observations toward the low-mass Class-0 binary system, VLA 1623Aab in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O(2--1) lines. Our $^{12}$CO ($J$=2--1) data reveal that the VLA 1623 outflow consists of twin spatially overlapped outflows/jets. The redshifted northwestern jet exhibits the three cycles of wiggle with a spatial period of 1360$\pm$10 au, corresponding to a time period of 180 yr. The wiggle-like structure is also found in the position-velocity (PV) diagram, showing an amplitude in velocity of about 0.9 km s$^{-1}$. Both the pe…
Context: Rotationally supported disks are critical in the star formation process. The questions of when do they form and what factors influence or hinder their formation have been studied but are largely unanswered. Observations of early stage YSOs are needed to probe disk formation. Aims: VLA1623 is a triple non-coeval protostellar system, with a weak magnetic field perpendicular to the outflow, whose Class 0 component, VLA1623A, shows a disk-like structure in continuum with signatures of rotation in line emission. We aim to determine whether this structure is in part or in whole a rotational…
As part of a systematic study that we are performing with the aim to increase the observational evidence of triggered star formation in the surroundings of HII regions, we analyze the ISM around the HII region G35.673-00.847, a poorly studied source. Using data from large-scale surveys: Two Micron All Sky Survey, Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE), MIPSGAL, Galactic Ring Survey (GRS), VLA Galactic Plane Survey (VGPS), and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) we performed a multiwavelength study of G35.673-00.847 and its surroundings. The mid IR emission, shows that G35.67…
Infrared-dark clouds (IRDCs) are believed to be the birthplaces of rich clusters and thus contain the earliest phases of high-mass star formation. We use the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and Very Large Array (VLA) maps of ammonia (NH3) in six IRDCs to measure their column density and temperature structure (Paper 1), and here, we investigate the kinematic structure and energy content. We find that IRDCs overall display organized velocity fields, with only localized disruptions due to embedded star formation. The local effects seen in NH3 emission are not high velocity outflows but rather moderate…
The first long-baseline ALMA campaign resolved the disk around the young star HL Tau into a number of axisymmetric bright and dark rings. Despite the very young age of HL Tau these structures have been interpreted as signatures for the presence of (proto)planets. The ALMA images triggered numerous theoretical studies based on disk-planet interactions, magnetically driven disk structures, and grain evolution. Of special interest are the inner parts of disks, where terrestrial planets are expected to form. However, the emission from these regions in HL Tau turned out to be optically thick at all…
We have mapped at small spatial scales the temperature and the velocity field in the protocluster associated with IRAS 05345+3157, which contains both intermediate-/high-mass protostellar candidates and starless condensations, and is thus an excellent location to investigate the role of massive protostars on protocluster evolution. We observed the ammonia (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions with the VLA. Ammonia is the best thermometer for dense and cold gas, and the observed transitions have critical densities able to trace the kinematics of the intracluster gaseous medium. The ammonia emis…
